Minnesota student-athletes have reported more than 500 NIL deals to the university dating back to the fall of 2021, with roughly an even split between men's and women's athletics, according to KARE’s Danny Spewak. While many of the financial details are redacted, Spewak reports Gopher athletes have reported at least $450K. “The single largest reported deal belonged to a football player, who made $25K from an autograph session last fall. A men's basketball player also reported $20K monthly NIL payments for ‘making live appearances at various events, signing autographs, and making social media posts.’” While supportive of student-athletes earning NIL money, Gophers AD Mark Coyle would like to see more structure within the system. “There's not an athletic program in the country that wouldn't say they want some sort of guidelines and regulation. I think you see at some institutions, I'm not sure it's true NIL. You hear the term, 'pay-for-play,' where they're recruiting kids on NIL deals. Are those deals real? Are they false?" Coyle also says of the House settlement: "There's not an athletic program across the country that isn't stressed right now financially. We're working closely with [President Rebecca Cunningham] and our board of regents to identify revenue sources as we move forward, and it's going to fall on us. Our board has made it very clear, let's have a balanced budget. We've been able to do that each year with the exception of the COVID year. So, again, departments are going to have to find that revenue, they're going to have to work with their campus partners to generate that revenue, but no doubt, there's pressure on every athletic program." KHON2 Sports’ Rob DeMello has one source who says the recently announced deal between Hawaii & Nike via BSN Sports is at risk due to the unexpected exit of UH AD Craig Angelos & another source who indicates the deal is still on track. In a statement from the university: “President Lassner has reached out to assure our prospective partners that the change in Athletic Department leadership changes nothing about the University of Hawaiʻi's interest in the relationship and that we look forward to completing the good work that Director Angelos started.” (link, link)

Monetary fines for rushing the field are clearly doing very little to keep students & fans in the stands after big wins, but rushing before the game is actually over is another challenge to tackle (no pun intended). Yesterday’s bizarre finish at Arizona State (over BYU), as well as Oklahoma’s big win (over Alabama) highlighted the risks involved. (link, link, link)

N4A has rolled out its new strategic plan, which is expected to provide a roadmap for the organization through 2029. Four key priorities: 1) Student-Athlete Support and Success (“At the core of N4A is our commitment to student-athletes. We will enhance programs and initiatives that empower them to excel academically, athletically, and personally, ensuring their success on and off the field.”); 2) Member Engagement (“We are dedicated to fostering professional growth and collaboration among our members. We will strengthen our voice and influence with institutional leaders, conferences, and national organizations, ensuring that the perspectives of N4A and its members are integral to shaping the future of intercollegiate athletics.”; and, 4) Internal Operations (“To sustain our mission, we will invest in the infrastructure and processes that enable N4A to operate effectively. Coaches Corner powered by D1.relocation…
+ USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz breaks down the biggest paydays for football coaches from this week’s games. Iowa State HC Matt Campbell took home $250K for the Cyclones’ ninth regular season win; for the same feat, Arizona State HC Kenny Dillingham snags $200K; Nebraska HC Matt Rhule will get $150K for the Huskers bowl appearance; Florida’s sixth win of the season gives HC Billy Napier a $100K bonus; Georgia clinched a spot in the SEC Championship game, giving HC Kirby Smart a $100K bonus; Arkansas HC Sam Pittman gets $100K for the Razorbacks becoming bowl eligible; Cal HC Justin Wilcox totalled $90K on the day from a variety of bonuses; Boise State HC Spencer Danielson gets $55K with the Broncos clinching a spot in the Mountain West Conference Championship; several others in the $25K-$50K range. In the world of extensions, Kansas State HC Chris Klieman gets an automatic one-year extension that takes him through 2032. The additional year is worth $6.5M with at least $3.75M guaranteed; and Illinois HC Bret Bielema added a $7.4M year to his deal, all guaranteed. (link)
+ Arizona State Football OC Marcus Arroyo and DC Brian Ward agreed to three-year extensions that make them the highest-paid coordinators in school history. While the amounts are not yet public, Sun Devil Source says the salaries will top all Big 12 peers, a group currently led by Utah OC Andy Ludwig’s $1.85M salary this year. (link)
+ Sportico lists the highest-paid coaches – both pro and college – in 2024, and while the top 10 is made up of NFL and NBA coaches, “11 through 50 is dominated by college coaches, including 21 from NCAA football and two in basketball (Kansas’ Bill Self, UConn’s Dan Hurley). Georgia’s Kirby Smart ranks 11th overall with an AAV of $13M, followed by Clemson’s Dabo Swinney ($11.5M) and USC’s Lincoln Riley ($11M). A trio of coaches received pay raises in 2024 that were tied to the retirement of [Nick] Saban at Alabama after six national championships there. Steve Sarkisian ($10.64M) and Mike Norvell ($10.52M) were both considered Saban successors but stayed at Texas and Florida State under enriched contracts. … [Alabama HC Kalen] DeBoer’s eight-year, $87M contract has an AAV of $10.875M and is 90% guaranteed if he is fired without cause. Jedd Fisch replaced DeBoer at Washington under a contract with a $7.75 AAV after three years at Arizona, where the team’s win total climbed from one to 10.” Also from Sportico’s Kurt Badenhausen: “The college coaching carousal—and bigger contracts with high-profile openings—previously played out in 2021 when USC, LSU and Florida were hiring. Riley ($11M), Brian Kelly ($10M) and Billy Napier ($7.4M) nabbed those jobs, respectively, and a slew of coaches received raises at their current schools, including Ole Miss’ Lane Kiffin ($9M), Kentucky’s Mark Stoops ($9M) and Penn State’s James Franklin ($8.5M). At the start of the 2021 college season, there were three coaches making at least $8M a year and 15 months later, it had increased to 14.” At $20M per year, Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid tops all coaches. NCAA Director of Inclusion Niya Blair Hackworth and Institute For Sport & Social Justice VP for Strategic Partnerships and Development Whitney Tarver sit down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to discuss their organizations’ efforts to develop the structures for a safer, more equitable world via leadership development and education. Tarver dives into the Institute’s founding, including its role in the globalization of sport and justice and its goal to engage, empower and support constituents, while Hackworth shares insight into the development of programming for NCAA student-athletes, coaches and administrators. Both Tarver and Hackworth agree that conversations about equity, justice, diversity and empowerment are essential for today’s leaders. Hackworth: “It’s really hard to measure DEI in terms of success because it’s really a long-term game. So, we think about success as not only how many people we can get to our programs or initiatives or touchpoints that we have, but how we’re able to change mindsets.” Tarver explains that in addition to education, “leadership is also the primary focus of a lot of what we do. So everything is kind of tied into leadership and tied into personal accountability because, like I said, that change that we want to see has to start with the individual has to start with me. So, training and education, I think, is what most folks will know us for.” More on ADU. (link)

The 10 zip codes that purchased the most Texas football season tickets all reside within 20 miles of Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, according to the Austin American-Statesman’s David Eckert, who notes that “zip codes that correspond to Austin accounted for at least 6,851 season ticket holders. Because the university's public records declined to provide statistics for zip codes with fewer than five season ticket holders, this data set includes roughly 25% of Texas' 68,000-plus total season ticket sales. There are more than 2,500 zip codes in Texas. Less than 500 of them purchased enough season tickets for them to be included in this data set. Season tickets reserved for Texas students are also excluded from this sample.” Houston is the next largest city with 1,531 season-ticket accounts, while 1,006 season-ticket holders reside in Dallas. The Big D is followed by San Antonio (812). Outside the state, the “zip code best represented inside Royal-Memorial Stadium on fall Saturdays is 33155, which corresponds to Miami-Dade County in Florida and is home to 22 Longhorns season ticket holders. The 21146 zip code in Anne Arundel County, Md., ranks second with 14, followed by 90035 in Los Angeles with 13 and Davis' Birmingham, Ala., zip code, with 12.” (link)

JohnWallStreet submits that the same challenges facing cable will come for broadcast networks next, and Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes says: “Everybody talks about ESPN and their challenges, nobody talks about those same headwinds in the context of the broadcast networks; despite all the sports content moving there.” This is largely the case because most people associate broadcast with free or over-the-air. Crakes adds: “It is the reason why the station groups were able to get away with saying teams moving from regional sports networks to local broadcast affiliates would be able to reach everybody in the market.” JWS: “But the reality is that most broadcast television viewing comes from inside the pay TV bundle (think: 80% or more), even with retransmission fees now pushing $30/mo. and consumers able to get the channels for free with an antenna, and broadcast and cable television channels make money in similar ways. The headwinds impacting the pay TV channel economics will eventually influence OTA stations in the same way–unless the broadcast networks can find a way to keep retransmission fee prices rising.” At some point, Crakes contends the decline of pay TV will erode the model’s retransmission fee returns. “The NBA’s recently signed deal could end up being an inflection point. As the revenue-compressing realties of pay TV’s decline continue to progress over the next several years, driving potentially large mergers and acquisitions within media distribution, the result could be less competitors bidding for less content at an elite level moving forward. That’s how you right-size the system’s cost increases from the buyer perspective.” (link)

The Albuquerque Journal’s Geoff Grammer updates on the AD search at New Mexico, indicates a selection could be announced “in the coming days” after UNM President Garnett Stokes held a round of interviews in Denver on Wednesday. Grammer reports Lobos Interim AD David Williams is still in the mix. Parker Executive Search will be paid $60K for its work assisting with the search. (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown is told by multiple sources that Hawaii President David Lassner “did not originally want to hire [outgoing Rainbow Warriors AD Craig] Angelos for the role at all in 2023, preferring the university hire current Associate Athletics Director [for Internal Operations/SWA] Lois Manin instead. But after a national search, other members of the search committee overruled Lassner, and the job went to Angelos. One industry source told me that Angelos was aware there may be plans to remove him at the earliest possible opportunity (and replaced with Manin) as early as his first month on the job. And lo and behold, right before Lassner retires from his role as UH president, Angelos is let go.” (Lassner has since denied these claims, and Manin has said she will not pursue the permanent post). Brown also explains there may have been tension that arose due to Angelos not being from Hawaii. “I’m told many existing UH athletic department employees were not fans of how the department was run over the last 16 months. I do not have any reason to believe that Angelos was abusive or unprofessional in any way, but I can also understand why somebody who had worked somewhere and done things a certain type of way for many years might not appreciate an ‘outsider’ coming in and pushing for significant changes.” While Brown acknowledges he could be wrong, he notes: “Typically, if a university president needs to fire a senior executive over performance related issues, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to the executive…there’d be a paper trail, the executive would know something might be coming, etc.” More. On the much-debated topic of kick times this season, Penn State AD Pat Kraft says: “To be very honest, we signed up for this.” Nebraska AD Troy Dannen adds: “This has been a question for the last 20 years. We as institutions decided that the television revenue was important. And we gave up the ability to place games where maybe it would be most convenient for us. To say we want the revenue, but we (also) want the ability to place these games where they’re optimal from a broadcast standpoint, I think it would be a little disingenuous.” Fox’s data finds that games like Ohio State at Penn State boast ratings about a third higher at noon, and Fox Sports President of Insights and Analytics Mike Mulvihill says: “There’s a belief that prime time is somehow inherently better, but that’s not really matched up by the analysis.” More from The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman and Scott Dochterman. (link)

The Washington Post’s Ben Strauss acknowledges Ohio State fans’ pushback on the number of noon games the Buckeyes have played this year is “probably” an overreaction but notes: “Ohio State’s early-bird schedule is, in part, a quirk of this particular season. … And it’s a testament to the uniqueness of the Big Ten’s TV deal, which is unlike any in the history of sports TV.” Strauss explains that Fox owns the first three picks of the draft [with ESPN and NBC as part of the league’s media rights contracts] each year and landed the date for the Ohio-State Michigan game first. It avoided the West Coast schools…that joined the Big Ten this season because they don’t play 9 AM local games. Fox has selected an Ohio State game with a top pick four times; other games have fallen to the noon slot after other networks made picks.” Former Fox Sports President Bob Thompson tells Strauss: “Fox is going to put their best chance at a rating in that window. They’re doing what’s in their rights in that contract.” Other factors also contribute, including the league’s overall reticence to playing night games and Michigan and Ohio State being able to veto any night games. Strauss: “NBC has expressed its frustrations to numerous stakeholders around the conference, according to people with knowledge of the conversations, suggesting that the network did not understand the full extent of the prime-time restrictions. The network has argued that it was informed of the full night game veto rights (and they were expanded from the Big Ten’s previous agreements) only after the term sheets for the deals were agreed to and announced, according to multiple people familiar with the deals.” Lots more. A hearing in former Florida football commit Jaden Rashada’s lawsuit against Gators HC Billy Napier, former UF staffer Marcus Castro-Walker and booster Hugh Hathcock has been scheduled for early December. U.S. District Court Judge Casey Rodgers will hear oral arguments for the multiple motions to dismiss on December 18, in Pensacola, Florida. (link)

Nebraska Football HC Matt Rhule predicts the upcoming transfer portal window will be chaotic due to the new roster limits. “The portal’s already flooded. … Just think about 20-30 guys from every school having to go into the portal and the effect it’s going to have on FCS and Division II and NAIA and Division III.” Rhule adds that there will be players on Nebraska’s team who “love this place and this’ll be the last time they put their pads on to be a Husker, and all settled in a courtroom somewhere. It’s a shame.” (link)

Utah Football HC Kyle Whittingham talks about how NIL and the transfer portal have forced him to change the way he builds rosters: “No excuses, but that was our formula: recruit, develop and manage. And with the turnover and with the way the portal is now, that system is – I don't want to say it's a dinosaur – but it is very hard to continue to have work. That also plays into you’ve got to take a hard look at your schemes because your schemes better be plug-and-play. You can’t have a scheme that’s so complicated and so in-depth that it takes a guy two or three years to learn it because you don’t have that time anymore. … You collect all the talent you can in the offseason and hope it gels and has chemistry and they better be able to assimilate the offensive and defensive schemes.” Whittingham also remarked that it’s “going to be a heavy shopping season for us in the portal” and explained the program has already established an NIL budget. “It will be a big bump in how much Utah will be paying to players.” (link, link)

Kentucky Football HC Mark Stoops remarks that when it comes to NIL “some institutions are built differently than others if you don’t have to fundraise, you know what I mean, if the resources are there. I think the only thing that really has been new, or extremely challenging, has been for myself raising all the money for NIL – relatively by myself and with [GM/Special Asst. to the HC] Eddie Gran doing that. And that’s really not something I signed up for, being a fundraiser. I’d like to spend my time with my players and developing them and being around them and having strong relationships with them. I think that’s just the one area. But again, I don’t want to make too much of that because it is what it is, and we’re figuring it out. And I’m completely excited about the future and getting these problems solved.” (link)

Washington State football student-athlete David Gusta says coaches or collective representatives who tamper with players have done so with him directly via their personal Instagram accounts. “Which is highly illegal, right? So, basically I’ll go up to Coach and I’ll be like, ‘Coach, check this out.” He also says coaches have reached out to his mom, including one who “started spamming [her] phone.” Gusta adds that on one call he told the representatives from a school he wasn’t interested in transferring and the person talked to him as if he knew him. “I’m like, ‘I don’t know you, you don’t know anything I’ve been through, you don’t know what kind of person I am, you don’t know what kind of scheme I’d fit, all you care about is the 10% you get for signing this player to that school.” (link)

The Players Era Festival is set to announce a presenting sponsorship lineup of Eli Lilly, MGM Resorts, and Starbucks, per SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, who reports each brand will have on-court logos and activations throughout the week around the tournament. EverWonder Studio CEO Ian Orefice declined to reveal financial details or terms of the deals, but tells Portnoy: “Our intention is certainly to be together for a long, long time.” Orefice adds: “When we set out to create Players Era, it was really about building a new, equitable future for college basketball and delivering for the fans. So, for us, beyond the financial commitment, it was aligning with brands that also value the future of college basketball with Players Era and how we're trying to build it.” (link); More from Players Era CEO Seth Berger: “We have $9 million in NIL opportunities outside of competition for this year’s festival, and with five top-25 teams, undefeated programs, and some of the most exciting players in the country, we’re going to deliver an unrivaled showcase for college basketball.” Sportico’s Daniel Libit also notes Players Era “recently hired former NCAA official Jeremy McCool as its VP of institutional relations, and Matthew Dooley, of grassroots basketball company Hoop Group, as VP of operations and marketing.” (link)

Former San José State football student-athlete Jeff Garcia is establishing the "Jeff Garcia Endowment for Football Student-Athletes,” which will provide scholarships, mentorship programs, and resources to enhance the overall experience of Spartans football student-athletes. Garcia: “Helping student-athletes achieve their goals has always been a passion of mine. I know firsthand the dedication and hard work required to excel in academics and athletics. This endowment is my way of giving back to the program that shaped my career and helping future generations thrive.” (link)
