WGLT continues its reporting on the departure of Illinois State AD Brennan, notes the contract extension Brennan inked last summer required “him to pay ISU back 25% of his annual salary if he resigned prior to June 2027.” While the buyout was presumably in connection to a situation where Brennan took another job within the industry, when asked if the recent developments would still necessitate the payment the university responded, “As Kyle’s resignation is effective April 30, the details of his separation are still being worked out at this time.” (link)

The Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Graney on possible hiccups for UNLV in its potential pursuit for Power 5 inclusion: “Perception versus reality. This isn’t 40 years go when talking how the school should be defined academically. It has made more-than-favorable strides. Has a law school and dental school and medical school. A research institute. One of the country’s best hospitality schools. But it also ranks 146th in public universities by U.S. News and World Report, perhaps too low for some of the highbrow presidents across the Pac-12.” Comparing the Rebels to San Diego State, Graney: “The market continues to grow. As 40th nationally, it has around 870,000 television households. It would be the smallest in the Pac-12 today, right after Salt Lake City (1.1 million). For comparison, San Diego has 1.13 million and Dallas-Fort Worth (where a reported Pac-12 target of Southern Methodist resides) 2.96 million. But the Aztecs also exist in the coveted Southern California market, which will not have Pac-12 team after the impending departure of USC and UCLA to the Big Ten.” (link)

South Carolina AVP of Institutional Relations and Public Affairs Stensland to TheBigSpur message board: “Since several of you have asked, I wanted to share a brief update on the stadium project RFI we issued in February: Following our issuance of the RFI, the university received inquiries from more than two dozen companies, and we received written responses from several development groups with experience executing major multi-phase projects. State procurement regulations prevent us from sharing additional details at this time, including names of respondents, but we are extremely pleased with the responses and the opportunities that lie ahead. Our goal remains to explore a comprehensive land use agreement that will allow for improvements to Williams-Brice Stadium while paving the way for the development of more than 800 acres near the stadium and other areas near campus. We are now focused on refining a scope of work and adding definition to the project. We will provide updates as the project progresses.” (link)

Special moment at the Virginia spring FB game as tailback Hollins, who survived a gunshot wound to his stomach in the November shooting attack that killed three Cavaliers, got the first touch Saturday to a standing ovation. Hollins last month: “I could have left, I could have transferred, but I think of that as sweeping things under the rug and not handling the situation as best as I could. The best place for me to move forward -- not move on, but move forward -- is in Charlottesville with the people who shared that experience with me. No one across the country feels the way we feel here in the facility. No one in the country knows how I feel about the situation besides the people here in this facility, and I got an uneasy feeling when I thought about leaving. I'm glad I stayed because the support is what I need right now to get through." (link)

Florida State Softball student-athlete Mudge OpEds for the Tampa Bay Times about her experience with NIL and speaking in front of Congress on the topic. Mudge lauds the positives and appreciates the guidance the Seminoles’ compliance department provided, but adds: “But even with support available to help athletes navigate NIL, there are still problems with how NIL works holistically. Different states have different laws on what they allow athletes or schools to do, and some states have no NIL laws at all. This can make things complicated for current athletes, and it also gives some athletes and schools advantages over competitors at schools in other states. Not to mention these discrepancies between schools can become a factor for recruiting and other ways when players are choosing which school to attend. I hope that through my testimony in Congress, and the testimony of many of the others on the panel, Congress will be motivated to set uniform guidelines that give every student-athlete the same resources and information to help them work through their NIL opportunities and keep every school playing by the same standards.” (link)

More insights from industry leaders on what new Big Ten Commissioner Petitti brings to the table. CBS Sports President McManus: “Don't be surprised if Tony comes up with new events, new approaches, new schedules, just as he did when he joined me in 1997. He's going to dive into this. Nobody will ever outwork him or have more of a commitment.” Longtime industry headliner Neinas: “Obviously, [the Big Ten's] biggest investment is television, and he knows it better than any of the other commissioners.” Notable sports media consultant Bevilacqua: “He's got a lot of operating experience. He really knows marketing. He'll be fixated on stuff like that, I'm sure. … They need people in the whole industry thinking a little bit differently than has been the last 20-30 years. It's now time to rearchitect how all this works.” (link)

Connect/MB Sports’ Banker talks with mental skills advisor Santore, commonly known as Coach Dar, about mental fitness and the “crisis of comfort” among college student-athletes. Santore goes deep, including on how coaches can develop student-athletes’ resiliency, the impact of social media, the importance of coping skills and lots more. Santore on the growth of on-demand student-athlete help & a plethora of tech solutions: “...if we do not allow them to learn certain life skills along the way, then how have we really served the student-athlete not just for sport, but for life. We haven’t. So, we want them to be able to have the ability and the responsibility to be able to handle things and learn aspects of life, learn how to cope with it. If you can find something that helps you with efficiency, great, but you still have to learn the life skills like how to manage your time, how to be effective, how to prioritize, how to make smart choices, various things that you have to learn so that you could handle life.” The full Q&A, with lots more advice on building resiliency, is now available on Connect. Arkansas Governor Huckabee Sanders recently signed into law a bill that requires parental consent and third-party verification for minors to open social media accounts, and the Arkansas Advocate’s Parker examines how this will impact prospective student-athletes. Arkansas Athlete Connection’s Jenkins, whose website serves as a booking agent for athletes in the state, calls the legislation a step backwards. “Recruiters used to come to campuses to get a feel for a player. Then recruiters started using social media, following players and following coaches to get to know a player. Without social media exposure, that lack of exposure, our students won’t get the attention that student-athletes in other states will.” (link)
