In the first year of a two-year pilot program, individual tennis championships occurred in the fall rather than the spring season. Competition wrapped up yesterday with Michael Zheng of Columbia and Dasha Vidmanova of Georgia capturing the men's and women's singles championship, respectively. TCU's Pedro Vives Marcos and Lui Maxted earned the men's doubles championship while Virginia's Elaine Chervinsky and Melodie Collard won women's doubles. Team championships will take place in the spring. (link)

The FCS Playoff field is set. The top 16 seeded teams are Montana State, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, South Dakota, UC Davis, Incarnate Word, Mercer, Idaho, Richmond, Rhode Island, Villanova, Illinois State, Tarleton State, Montana, Abilene Christian and New Hampshire. Full bracket. (link); Stats Perform’s Craig Haley notes the line between the last four in and first four out was clearer than usual this year. The last four in included Eastern Kentucky, Northern Arizona and UT Martin, which finished with records of 8-4, and Tennessee State, which finished 9-3. The last four out included Chattanooga, SE Louisiana, and Southern Utah, which finished with 7-5 records, and Stony Brook, which finished 8-4. (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher sits down with Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould to discuss a number of topics, including the media rights negotiations. Gould “declined to put a firm timeline” on the negotiations, but Canzano notes that “industry insiders tell me a reasonable target for an announcement would be sometime around basketball’s March Madness. Gould wants to manage expectations, but I didn’t hear anything on Saturday that shifted that estimate.” The league’s next expansion move will be driven by feedback from media partners, per Gould, who adds: “I don’t think we need to get all the way to the end of the media-rights process” before expanding. The process so far is in the “introductory stage” with the “who’s bidding?” stage not far off. Gould: “We’re not just looking for whoever is willing to pay the most dollars for our rights. We’re looking for partnership. We need a media partner who wants to be part of our growth and what we’re doing to recreate the Pac-12.” As for whether the league will indeed sell football and basketball rights separately, Canzano writes: “I got the impression from Gould that the conference will shop the rights, at least initially, as a bundle. That could change if a media partner expresses an appetite for a basketball-only offering.” Also from Canzano: “Remove Sacramento State from the expansion board, despite the geography. Gould lives in Northern California, within an hour of the school. She knows the campus well and admires its recent ambition, but I didn’t get the impression that the Pac-12 has an interest in adding an FCS school.” Lots more. (link)

Missouri AD Laird Veatch joins the Mizzou Storytellers podcast with Tigers Director of Letterwinner Engagement Loretta Jones and Assoc. AD for Strategic Communications Dave Matter to talk about MU’s “Will to Win” gameplan to address the major changes coming to college athletics. He also shares insights on closing Mizzou’s revenue gap in the SEC and discusses plans to modernize the fundraising model. Jones points out Mizzou’s revenue is third from the bottom in the SEC and $35M below the league average, and Veatch explains that underscores the need to be aggressive. “The reality is our university is helping us bridge that gap, and that is not a sustainable model long-term, so we have to do what is necessary and can't really expect to take the next step and really to win those championships unless we're at least on a similarly resourced playing field.” Mizzou’s ticket/donation average cost is less than half of the SEC average, and Veatch notes it’s been 12 years since the Tigers have increased ticket prices. “And if you look at the cumulative impact of inflation over that period, that means our potential buying power associated with what we can generate from football is about 40% less than what it was 12 years ago. So, it has a cumulative effect that's really dramatic and we're just going to have to find a way to start to eat into that.” In addition to further monetizing venues through concerts and events and securing more corporate sponsorships, Veatch acknowledges the Tigers will be asking more of fans moving forward. “That is a reality. As we’ve talked about, we’re going to be significantly increasing football prices. That’s going to be something that we really need to push forward. … We need to modernize our fundraising approach so that it really motivates and recognizes philanthropic giving beyond those seat purchases and it also really helps recognize and motivate long-term, lifetime-type giving and recognizes those that have been true leaders for us. And at the same time simplifies our process.” Full podcast. (link)

Appalachian State AD Doug Gillin discusses several topics on the David Glenn Show, including how the athletic department responded in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The football team, for instance, had to cancel its September 28 matchup with Liberty, and Gillin credits Mountaineers Deputy AD/CFO Jonathan Reeder for approaching him over the summer and recommending the department add disaster insurance. “And while I was a little skeptical spending the money, we did it and certainly thankful that we did. When you look at a football game here, it's significant. It’s multiple millions of dollars of revenue that are lost when we don't play football here, so we're going through that process right now with the insurance company and thankful that we had it and looking forward to hopefully being able to recuperate as much as possible from a lost-revenue standpoint.” In regards to the House settlement, Gillin says it’s about “how can we continue to be competitive but stay in our lane? We can’t spend money we don’t have. So for us it's going to be continuing to find different revenue streams as we can, but also continuing to be judicious with how we spend our money. What I'm talking to all of our coaches about is… within the framework of your budget, can you do some things differently to allow for increased scholarships? Baseball scholarships, as an example, [are] going from 11.6 to 34. We can’t do that, we can’t make that jump, but could we be something better than 11.6 if we readjusted our money?” Full interview. The NCAA on Friday filed a 37-page opposition to an injunction filed by Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia in which it argues Pavia “hasn’t established the requisite necessity for a preliminary injunction,” per Sportico’s Michael McCann, who adds: “The association says he knew of the challenged rules years ago and could have contested them at that time but instead waited until the second half of the 2024-25 season to bring a case. ‘The law does not allow him to manufacture an emergency by waiting to sue,’ the NCAA charges. … The NCAA also contends that Pavia hasn’t established he’s at risk of irreparable harm, a crucial factor for obtaining an injunction. Irreparable harm ordinarily means a kind of harm that money damages can’t remedy.” In fact, the NCAA argues that Pavia’s “desire to continue earning compensation for his NIL” would constitute an injury money could remedy should Pavia be denied an injunction. As such, if Pavia later proves in a trial that he should have been eligible for 2025-26, his lost NIL deals could be calculated and the NCAA could remunerate Pavia for what he would have earned. McCann: “In forthcoming court filings, expect Pavia to counter the NCAA’s use of [former OTE players Matt and Ryan Bewley] and [North Carolina women’s tennis student-athlete Reese Brantmeier]. Pavia could argue Bewley is inapplicable since while the Bewley brothers were paid to play in OTE, there is no comparable point for Pavia. He has not played in a quasi-professional league and, by all accounts, has complied with NIL and other NCAA rules. As to Brantmeier, it concerns prize money restrictions for athletes in individual sports (tennis, golf, fencing, equestrian etc.), not a football player’s continued access to NIL deals.” (link)

Dan Furman, president of the Louisville-focused 502 Circle, explains that “we’re over a $10M collective,” and credits the fans for coming through. “I’m going to be the first to tell you this is really expensive to do. We’re a startup. We are trying to figure it out…we’re trying to build out processes and find ways to keep being competitive and build what we’re doing. It is not easy, by any stretch and there are a lot of people putting a lot of sacrifices forward to try and figure this out.” (link)

Front Office Sports’ Alex Schiffer examines how Santa Clara’s decision to cut football in the ‘90s impacts the women’s soccer NIL infrastructure. Broncos HC Jerry Smith, who was six years into his now-38-year tenure at the time, predicted it would be a problem, telling reporters at the time: “My job just got a lot harder.” The program did not immediately suffer and has, in fact, won two national titles since 2020 and remains a perennial contender. But the way the program recruits has changed, as Smith explains: “We kind of stay away from a five-star kid. Because I think I can win without them. And I’m going to lose out to a Power 4 conference. They’re going to outbid you on NIL. There’s such a low return on that kid for Santa Clara that we really don’t spend time recruiting them.” Smith has yet to offer NIL money to a high school recruit yet, but it’s on the list of calls he knows he’ll be making in the near future. He remains close with both alumna/long time USWNT stalwart Julie Ertz and alumnus/NBA hall of famer Steve Nash but has not asked them for money but says: “It’s coming. I haven’t called Julie. But it’s coming. It’s a big wave that’s coming.” Smith also tells Schiffer there’s a correlation between the athletes he loses to NIL and the schools they choose: those with football programs that can easily outbid them. He says most of those players are landing five-figure deals. But the problem isn’t the money as much as those schools’ ability to spread it further down the roster. Looking ahead, Smith says: “I think Santa Clara is a place where we can last longer if there’s going to continue to be chaos. What’s happening with the money that’s being spent by the Power 4, it’s only a matter of time before the rest of us won’t be able to keep up.” (link)

Minnesota student-athletes have reported more than 500 NIL deals to the university dating back to the fall of 2021, with roughly an even split between men's and women's athletics, according to KARE’s Danny Spewak. While many of the financial details are redacted, Spewak reports Gopher athletes have reported at least $450K. “The single largest reported deal belonged to a football player, who made $25K from an autograph session last fall. A men's basketball player also reported $20K monthly NIL payments for ‘making live appearances at various events, signing autographs, and making social media posts.’” While supportive of student-athletes earning NIL money, Gophers AD Mark Coyle would like to see more structure within the system. “There's not an athletic program in the country that wouldn't say they want some sort of guidelines and regulation. I think you see at some institutions, I'm not sure it's true NIL. You hear the term, 'pay-for-play,' where they're recruiting kids on NIL deals. Are those deals real? Are they false?" Coyle also says of the House settlement: "There's not an athletic program across the country that isn't stressed right now financially. We're working closely with [President Rebecca Cunningham] and our board of regents to identify revenue sources as we move forward, and it's going to fall on us. Our board has made it very clear, let's have a balanced budget. We've been able to do that each year with the exception of the COVID year. So, again, departments are going to have to find that revenue, they're going to have to work with their campus partners to generate that revenue, but no doubt, there's pressure on every athletic program." KHON2 Sports’ Rob DeMello has one source who says the recently announced deal between Hawaii & Nike via BSN Sports is at risk due to the unexpected exit of UH AD Craig Angelos & another source who indicates the deal is still on track. Monetary fines for rushing the field are clearly doing very little to keep students & fans in the stands after big wins, but rushing before the game is actually over is another challenge to tackle (no pun intended). Yesterday’s bizarre finish at Arizona State (over BYU), as well as Oklahoma’s big win (over Alabama) highlighted the risks involved. (link, link, link)

+ USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz breaks down the biggest paydays for football coaches from this week’s games. Iowa State HC Matt Campbell took home $250K for the Cyclones’ ninth regular season win; for the same feat, Arizona State HC Kenny Dillingham snags $200K; Nebraska HC Matt Rhule will get $150K for the Huskers bowl appearance; Florida’s sixth win of the season gives HC Billy Napier a $100K bonus; Georgia clinched a spot in the SEC Championship game, giving HC Kirby Smart a $100K bonus; Arkansas HC Sam Pittman gets $100K for the Razorbacks becoming bowl eligible; Cal HC Justin Wilcox totalled $90K on the day from a variety of bonuses; Boise State HC Spencer Danielson gets $55K with the Broncos clinching a spot in the Mountain West Conference Championship; several others in the $25K-$50K range. In the world of extensions, Kansas State HC Chris Klieman gets an automatic one-year extension that takes him through 2032. The additional year is worth $6.5M with at least $3.75M guaranteed; and Illinois HC Bret Bielema added a $7.4M year to his deal, all guaranteed. (link)
+ Arizona State Football OC Marcus Arroyo and DC Brian Ward agreed to three-year extensions that make them the highest-paid coordinators in school history. While the amounts are not yet public, Sun Devil Source says the salaries will top all Big 12 peers, a group currently led by Utah OC Andy Ludwig’s $1.85M salary this year. (link)
+ Sportico lists the highest-paid coaches – both pro and college – in 2024, and while the top 10 is made up of NFL and NBA coaches, “11 through 50 is dominated by college coaches, including 21 from NCAA football and two in basketball (Kansas’ Bill Self, UConn’s Dan Hurley). Georgia’s Kirby Smart ranks 11th overall with an AAV of $13M, followed by Clemson’s Dabo Swinney ($11.5M) and USC’s Lincoln Riley ($11M). A trio of coaches received pay raises in 2024 that were tied to the retirement of [Nick] Saban at Alabama after six national championships there. Steve Sarkisian ($10.64M) and Mike Norvell ($10.52M) were both considered Saban successors but stayed at Texas and Florida State under enriched contracts. … [Alabama HC Kalen] DeBoer’s eight-year, $87M contract has an AAV of $10.875M and is 90% guaranteed if he is fired without cause. Jedd Fisch replaced DeBoer at Washington under a contract with a $7.75 AAV after three years at Arizona, where the team’s win total climbed from one to 10.” Also from Sportico’s Kurt Badenhausen: “The college coaching carousal—and bigger contracts with high-profile openings—previously played out in 2021 when USC, LSU and Florida were hiring. Riley ($11M), Brian Kelly ($10M) and Billy Napier ($7.4M) nabbed those jobs, respectively, and a slew of coaches received raises at their current schools, including Ole Miss’ Lane Kiffin ($9M), Kentucky’s Mark Stoops ($9M) and Penn State’s James Franklin ($8.5M). At the start of the 2021 college season, there were three coaches making at least $8M a year and 15 months later, it had increased to 14.” At $20M per year, Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid tops all coaches. NCAA Director of Inclusion Niya Blair Hackworth and Institute For Sport & Social Justice VP for Strategic Partnerships and Development Whitney Tarver sit down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to discuss their organizations’ efforts to develop the structures for a safer, more equitable world via leadership development and education. Tarver dives into the Institute’s founding, including its role in the globalization of sport and justice and its goal to engage, empower and support constituents, while Hackworth shares insight into the development of programming for NCAA student-athletes, coaches and administrators. Both Tarver and Hackworth agree that conversations about equity, justice, diversity and empowerment are essential for today’s leaders. Hackworth: “It’s really hard to measure DEI in terms of success because it’s really a long-term game. So, we think about success as not only how many people we can get to our programs or initiatives or touchpoints that we have, but how we’re able to change mindsets.” Tarver explains that in addition to education, “leadership is also the primary focus of a lot of what we do. So everything is kind of tied into leadership and tied into personal accountability because, like I said, that change that we want to see has to start with the individual has to start with me. So, training and education, I think, is what most folks will know us for.” More on ADU. (link)

The 10 zip codes that purchased the most Texas football season tickets all reside within 20 miles of Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, according to the Austin American-Statesman’s David Eckert, who notes that “zip codes that correspond to Austin accounted for at least 6,851 season ticket holders. Because the university's public records declined to provide statistics for zip codes with fewer than five season ticket holders, this data set includes roughly 25% of Texas' 68,000-plus total season ticket sales. There are more than 2,500 zip codes in Texas. Less than 500 of them purchased enough season tickets for them to be included in this data set. Season tickets reserved for Texas students are also excluded from this sample.” Houston is the next largest city with 1,531 season-ticket accounts, while 1,006 season-ticket holders reside in Dallas. The Big D is followed by San Antonio (812). Outside the state, the “zip code best represented inside Royal-Memorial Stadium on fall Saturdays is 33155, which corresponds to Miami-Dade County in Florida and is home to 22 Longhorns season ticket holders. The 21146 zip code in Anne Arundel County, Md., ranks second with 14, followed by 90035 in Los Angeles with 13 and Davis' Birmingham, Ala., zip code, with 12.” (link)

JohnWallStreet submits that the same challenges facing cable will come for broadcast networks next, and Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes says: “Everybody talks about ESPN and their challenges, nobody talks about those same headwinds in the context of the broadcast networks; despite all the sports content moving there.” This is largely the case because most people associate broadcast with free or over-the-air. Crakes adds: “It is the reason why the station groups were able to get away with saying teams moving from regional sports networks to local broadcast affiliates would be able to reach everybody in the market.” JWS: “But the reality is that most broadcast television viewing comes from inside the pay TV bundle (think: 80% or more), even with retransmission fees now pushing $30/mo. and consumers able to get the channels for free with an antenna, and broadcast and cable television channels make money in similar ways. The headwinds impacting the pay TV channel economics will eventually influence OTA stations in the same way–unless the broadcast networks can find a way to keep retransmission fee prices rising.” At some point, Crakes contends the decline of pay TV will erode the model’s retransmission fee returns. “The NBA’s recently signed deal could end up being an inflection point. As the revenue-compressing realties of pay TV’s decline continue to progress over the next several years, driving potentially large mergers and acquisitions within media distribution, the result could be less competitors bidding for less content at an elite level moving forward. That’s how you right-size the system’s cost increases from the buyer perspective.” (link)
