RMAC Commissioner Chris Graham chats with D2.ticker’s Anthony Grassi about potential changes around DII, football and regionalization on which, Graham believes in the value of regionalization as a core tenant in DII and as a cost-containment measure, while also noting the RMAC would have interest in discussing and pursuing a more national bracket once selections are made within the region. “If it's in the best interest of our budgets, particularly during these times, then I'm supportive of tweaking it. I'm supportive of looking at ways to make it more competitive. I still think the selections need to come regionally.” Asked about the division’s triennial budget process: “I know that there are many of us that feel that that's something that we should look at again. It makes a lot of sense because just to have some rhyme and reason to what we're spending, why we're spending and doing it responsibly is not a bad thing. But we believe there are some cases where we can make exceptions and we know that that's got to be done within the governance structure in a way that respects the governance structure, but hopefully gets taken care of so we can be more proactive instead reactive in these cases.” On broad changes in the division, Graham emphasizes the value of the democratic governance process given the varying nature of institutions, adding: “I think our league is very interested in ensuring that no matter the structure and no matter what it is we're trying to accomplish in the future we want to see Division II grow west of the Mississippi. There are certain sports like men's and women's lacrosse we want to see continue to grow. We're still very interested in maintaining men's and women swimming and we're thankful for the associate members we have there. I think the DII Think Tank did a really nice job. [...] I think there'll be a lot of discussion about whether we can be more bold and whether we can be more progressive because everything is changing in front of us. I know the purpose of the think tank was to to discern whether or not we are in a position to properly react to what's going to be handed to us through the courts, through Congress and from our Division I brethren and what we should be positioned to present to our membership in order to make sure that Division II is as strong as it possibly can be.” More on developing leaders and advocating for others on BOSCA. As the post-House world slowly comes into focus, Kelleigh Irwin Fagan, partner at Church Church Hittle and Antrim, tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “Any time you’re making payments to a student-athlete that has some affiliation with your school, how much can it get into the employment question? How much can you control, through payments, their activities without crossing that line? Maybe you can’t do that much without crossing that line, but all of these issues are so intertwined. Pulling one lever in one direction may impact something else on the employment side.” Smith College economist Andrew Zimbalist earlier this year noted that if Dartmouth men’s basketball student-athletes “are declared to be employees and they’re eligible to unionize, what it means is that every private school in the country will also qualify to unionize. That means Division II schools; it means Division III schools; it means my school, Smith College, because the basketball players at Dartmouth basically have the same existence as a DIII school.” Meanwhile, Athletes.org Co-Founder Brandon Copeland says: “Being an employee gives athletes certain protections and rights that they don’t have today, and that’s the minimum, that’s the standard, that’s the floor. I also think that, listening to our advisers and our legal counsel, there are certain things that being an employee would detract from the current college athlete experience. For some athletes, some of the revenue-generating ones, it would be probably perfect. It would operate much like it does at the pro level. For other athletes, it may end up hurting them in the long run.” (link)

N4A has rolled out its new strategic plan, which is expected to provide a roadmap for the organization through 2029. We will strengthen our voice and influence with institutional leaders, conferences, and national organizations, ensuring that the perspectives of N4A and its members are integral to shaping the future of intercollegiate athletics.”; and, 4) Internal Operations (“To sustain our mission, we will invest in the infrastructure and processes that enable N4A to operate effectively. NCAA Director of Inclusion Niya Blair Hackworth and Institute For Sport & Social Justice VP for Strategic Partnerships and Development Whitney Tarver sit down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to discuss their organizations’ efforts to develop the structures for a safer, more equitable world via leadership development and education. Tarver dives into the Institute’s founding, including its role in the globalization of sport and justice and its goal to engage, empower and support constituents, while Hackworth shares insight into the development of programming for NCAA student-athletes, coaches and administrators. Both Tarver and Hackworth agree that conversations about equity, justice, diversity and empowerment are essential for today’s leaders. Hackworth: “It’s really hard to measure DEI in terms of success because it’s really a long-term game. So, we think about success as not only how many people we can get to our programs or initiatives or touchpoints that we have, but how we’re able to change mindsets.” Tarver explains that in addition to education, “leadership is also the primary focus of a lot of what we do. So everything is kind of tied into leadership and tied into personal accountability because, like I said, that change that we want to see has to start with the individual has to start with me.
