North Dakota State AD/FCS Playoff Committee Chair Matt Larsen joins Inforum’s Dom Izzo to talk about the selection committee process and says in his opinion, “if all things are equal, head-to-head should win out” when seeding teams but adds: “I would say it's not absolute that a head-to-head means that team should be in the bracket or ranked ahead. It really depends on what the rest of it looks like. You can have a team that loses to somebody but then has beaten three top 10 teams. How do you value those out. So it really depends. To say we're going to look at one thing in isolation is hard, but I would say if all things are equal to me, then head-to-head has to matter.” There’s also variability when it comes to the importance of conference championships, as Larsen points out that “not every conference championship is created equal. When you look at the strength of leagues across FCS, it's very different. So, to say if you had a conference championship in one league that they should be ranked higher than somebody who maybe came in second or third in another league, it really comes down to all the things we talked about: metrics, strength of schedule, head-to-heads, quality wins, all of those things. So I don't know if that's something we actually look at really hard other than the fact that if they win a conference championship they're automatically into the bracket.” More from Larsen. (link)

Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua talks to Sportico’s Anthony Crupi about the impact of past glory amid stark industry change as the Fighting Irish head into tomorrow’s kick with undefeated Army West Point: “We absolutely have to keep our foot on the gas and be as strategic and progressive as we possibly can be to stay competitive. And I’ll tell you what I particularly love about this game is that it’s this great collision of both of those worlds. We’re going to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Four Horsemen game, we’re going to go to one of the great sports settings in the world in Yankee Stadium, so we have all the hallmarks of the great traditions of football. But in the here and now, this game is unbelievably important.” On playing in Yankee Stadium: “In many ways, New York is just kind of a home environment for us 365 days a year. As unbelievable as it is to come to Notre Dame and experience the game as a fan, we want to bring a home-game environment to as many of these wonderful cities and their great sports stages as we can.” (link)

UC Santa Barbara AD Kelly Barsky is optimistic the Gauchos can succeed in the midst of all the changes in college athletics: “I’ve heard lots of concerns about amateurism, concerns where college athletics is going. We have to evolve, change, and grow with the times. [But] we still have an opportunity with student-athletes to be tethered to academics.” In addition to academic support, Barsky notes UCSB athletes receive “high-caliber coaching, sports medicine support, life skills support, even financial management support. … Just because there’s NIL and an opportunity to share revenue does not take away from those skills that are learned from being in a college campus.” Barsky goes on to say UCSB is “positioned being a non-football school to support our programs and be competitive. We have to be strategic, thoughtful, and intentional. Baseball is a great example. The ability to play 56 games in four months and have a significant regional footprint is a strength for us. The ability to recruit on the West Coast…so that they can play here and families can see them. Those things are benefits.” (link)

Northern Illinois AD Sean Frazier pens a letter to fans about the impact of the House settlement and explains that “from my perspective, NIL and the collectives are not going away. Similarly, the transfer portal and the ability of student-athletes to move from school-to-school is here to stay. We are seeing regular adjustments to the portal windows. … My hope is that the portal can be a tool that both student-athletes and programs are able to use to their advantage. However, there are many examples of student-athletes not finding a landing place after they have entered the portal. It is extremely important as practitioners for us to help them navigate this complex process. I am on a number of committees and boards that realize that the main focus for student-athletes is to graduate/have access to higher education and use athletics as a tool of education. … In fact, much of our internal discussion on the topics listed above revolves around generating the revenue needed to support our #MissionPossible. We will continue to manage our resources efficiently and effectively while providing the best possible student-athlete experience.” (link)

The Coloradoan’s Sady Swanson & Kevin Lytle report Denver-based U.S. District Court Judge S. Kato Crews heard attorney arguments yesterday morning from both the Mountain West & the Women’s Volleyball student-athletes suing the league on Title IX grounds. Per the article: “Crews said he will take their arguments under advisement and issue a written ruling at a later date, according to online court records.” (link)

More from Priority Sports agent Rick Smith, who joined Tulane Sports Law Director Gabe Feldman to take a look inside college coaches’ contracts, the trends in college coaching, where the money is and where it’s going. On the difference between negotiating contracts with college athletic departments vs. pro teams, Smith says pro teams have a contract negotiator who negotiates contracts for a living. For colleges, that duty almost always falls on the ADs, who don’t necessarily specialize in contract negotiation and have several more people to report to. Therefore, “you’ll see a coach announced in college and his contract for six months. It’s crazy what goes on.” Regarding with-cause termination clauses, Smith says there are often one or two catch-all components that are “undefineable.” He recounts one instance in which a school wanted to let a coach go under such a provision because the coach had a $17M buyout. “Everybody knew what they were trying to do. They were trying to get us to settle. … Most coaches don’t have the funds to be able to fight that to the end. My guy did.” The coach won the arbitration suit and received 100 cents on the dollar but legal fees wound up costing $1.5M. Lots more. (link)

Nevada held an invitation-only “Nevada Football Summit” earlier this week to welcome around 85 of the Wolf Pack’s biggest supporters with AD Stephanie Rempe and Football HC Jeff Choate detailing why the school is launching a $50M investment into the football program over the next decade. Nevada will take its $10M payment due from Mountain West realignment as a down payment on the goal, which, coupled with a $2M donation already received, leaves $38M to raise in the next 10 years. The $5M annual investment would go toward increasing coaching salaries ($1.5M-$2M per year); football operational needs ($1M-$1.5M); and NIL/revenue sharing for player recruitment and retention ($2M). Rempe: “I believe we're at the point where we have to go all in. There's a reason that we didn't get invited to the Pac-2. We have not invested in football in the last 15 years, and we need to do that. We have to do it. We really are at a point where we've got a president that has a vision and he's going to be here for several more years. We've got the right football coach. Now is the time to do it.” Choate: “I'm here to make Nevada win again. We're not asking you to do this for us. We're asking you to do this with us.” (link)

Texas State is finalizing a new seven-year deal for Football Head Coach GJ Kinne that will make him the highest-paid coach in the Sun Belt at an average of $2M per year. (link)

LSU five-star quarterback commitment Bryce Underwood has decommitted from the Tigers and committed to Michigan instead, just 30 minutes from his high school. The Advocate’s Koki Riley and Wilson Alexander: “LSU offered Underwood an NIL deal worth around $1.5 million annually, sources familiar with the deal told The Advocate. That figure would have made Underwood the highest-paid player on the team. Michigan, on the other hand, offered Underwood around $10 million in NIL deals spread across several seasons, according to a CBS Sports report from early November.” (link)

Texas Tech leaders are asking Governor Greg Abbott to allow state universities to temporarily ignore a law that prohibits them from paying student-athletes directly. TTU Board of Regents Chair Mark Griffin and regent Cody Campbell explain in a letter that states without such a law will be able to strike deals with student-athletes who decide where to go in November and December. “As a result, TTU and other Texas universities are severely limited in their ability to recruit student athletes, and Texas universities are likely to lose recruits to universities in states that do not have these restrictions.” Griffin and Campbell add that they expect state legislators will change the law in the upcoming legislative session but until that happens they say they need the governor to step in. The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner writes on the 28 Big 12 Men’s Basketball and Football games that will move to TBS or TNT from ESPN+ starting next season: “This isn’t about 2025-30, folks. It’s about 2031 and beyond. The arrangement positions the Big 12 for greater success when it negotiates a new media rights contract at the turn of the decade. The conference’s current arrangement with Fox and ESPN expires in the summer of 2031. Because media negotiations typically begin 12-18 months before the start of the next contract term, the Big 12 will head to market at the turn of the decade after its content has aired on TNT and TBS for five competition years. The Big 12 will have established relationships with Warner Bros. Discovery executives and proof of performance for its inventory — all of which could facilitate negotiations for commissioner Brett Yormark. The more competition for media rights, the higher the asking price. By airing games on TNT and TBS in advance, Yormark hopes to increase the likelihood that Warner Bros. Discovery bids on Big 12 media rights in 2030.” (link)

+ Wichita State is changing the name of its baseball stadium to Eck Stadium, Home of Tyler Field at Gene Stephenson Park in honor of longtime HC Gene Stephenson. Shockers AD Kevin Saal: "We are grateful to the Kansas Board of Regents for their support of this important honor. Fordham officially introduced Charles Guthrie as its new AD, and in his opening remarks, Guthrie said he’s “committed to bringing strategy, passion and strong work ethic to achieve exceptional results. I look forward to immersing myself in the Fordham and Greater New York communities. We will build around excitement – excitement around our program that is felt by Fordham faculty, students and alumni here in New York and around the globe. We are ready to innovate and take full advantage of the new landscape of college athletics and what it can mean for the university. … Working in college athletics feels like a moving target and some like to say you're building a plane and trying to fly it at the same time. For me, that's where I feel like I'm at my best – always learning, always looking out at how we can take advantage of the bar being raised. The key to success in this scenario may seem obvious, but it's not always easy. Now is the time to be front-foot forward to ensure Fordham is well-positioned for the next iteration of college athletics. I know this as long as we remain student-centered…we will succeed here at Fordham.” (link)

Hawaii President David Lassner speaks publicly for the first time since parting ways with AD Craig Angelos and reiterates the dismissal was due to performance. Lassner acknowledges Angelos’ achievements during his tenure but points to private performance reviews as the basis for his decision. Lassner agrees the timing of Angelos’ dismissal is “awkward” but says he didn’t believe it would be prudent to take this action while the presidential search is underway. “It would have become a major distraction and might have overwhelmed that absolutely critical search. At the same time I did not believe that I could or should leave the next president to solve a problem that I believe existed, particularly when it was a result of my own decision.” Lassner goes on to refute what he calls “outright lies,” including “accusations of a coup by individuals in the department or my rewarding my friends.” More from Lassner. Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez joins the Now It’s Legal podcast with Athletes.org Co-Founder Jim Cavale and says the league has been in discussions about how it will approach revenue-sharing. “I would start by saying all the Mountain West schools are in. They’re going to be participating in some way. What that means yet we don't know. And we've been exploring minimums, facilitation through the conference office, but frankly there are just right now so many unknowns about what that means, how dollars will count and flow toward the cap. We are not a named defendant, so we're really not in the room right now as they are hammering out the details and what the settlement actually means when the rubber hits the road. But we're ready and have been doing the background. I don't know that we have any decisions that we’d announce at this point.” Nevarez believes it’s important for student-athletes from each sport to be represented in a representative government structure. Currently at the conference level, student-athletes are represented by one player from each school, and Nevarez explains: “If you're talking about a basketball issue, you might not have any basketball players in the room. And each student-athlete, if they've not been prepped to go ask their basketball colleagues on their campus, are trying to bring their own perspective and not really representing that sport.” In discussing the possibility of having all of FBS work together in a centralized manner, Nevarez points out that the opportunity for increased revenue across the board is there but points out a similar system used to be in place in which the centralized media rights were handled by the NCAA. “And there was a lawsuit and we lost that lawsuit and the media rights had to trickle out to the conferences. So, the more consolidation we have, the higher our antitrust risk is, which is one of the things I think they're working at the highest levels to try to solve because this fracturing…makes the entire system inefficient.” Full podcast. Ohio State will add 91 scholarships following the House settlement’s implementation, according to Buckeyes AD Ross Bjork, who writes in an open letter to fans: “We firmly believe this new investment will allow our programs to continue to compete for and win championships and keep excellence at the forefront of our mission.” Bjork also notes OSU is committed to maintaining and supporting scholarships for 36 sports. “We will also continue to work diligently to further reduce operating expenses while uncovering many of the new revenue sources that fit Ohio State traditional values. We are committed to being extremely innovative and creative amid these changes to the collegiate sports model. During these times of immense change, we have an opportunity to show the world what it means to be a Buckeye and lead the way into the future.” (link)

The Athletic’s Matt Baker reports Florida State AD Michael Alford today reiterated to the FSU Board of Trustees that with the House settlement soon putting a rev-share cap on things, he thinks facilities, coaches and culture will be more important. “Context: FSU is doing a lot of facilities upgrades, including a major stadium renovation and the construction of a football operations center. Concrete and steel work being done now on that.” Also from Baker: “[Alford] says the GM will generally be negotiating for the school. There will be a capologist and checks and balances. Looking at multi-year contract possibilities. Multiyear contracts would help curtail the transfer portal, FSU's AD says. There'd be a buyout clause if Player X left early. I'm finding this conversation interesting. Evaluation will be even more important, FSU's AD says. If you miss on a first-round pick (or in this case, a 5-star ATH), that counts against your cap. How many times can you afford to miss with a cap?” (link)

Wake Forest AD John Currie outlines the Deacs’ three-pronged approach to the House settlement: “First, like any of you when faced with new expenses in your home or business, we have been drilling down on careful examination and tough decisions about expense reductions and reallocations of existing resources, while still protecting our ability to provide a World Class Student-Athlete Experience. Second, with the support and encouragement from leadership donors, we will once again call on additional investments from all of Demon Deacon Nation, in the form of Deacon Club gifts, ticket purchases, and sport-specific fundraising. And, continued institutional investments in Wake Forest Athletics both solidifies the foundation and amplifies the importance of competitive and academic success. Thanks to President Wente and the Board, we have the confidence to charge forward with this ambitious plan, as some of our competition vacillates and falters.” (link)

Georgia Tech officials are discussing an increase in student fees, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Chad Bishop, who reports that “starting in the 2026 fiscal year, the current fee of $127 per semester would increase by $25. The early stages of that proposal for the increase were presented Wednesday to Tech’s Mandatory Student Fee Allocation committee, which consists of four undergraduate students, four graduate students, two faculty members and two members of the administration.” (link)

Learfield has launched EDGE, a marketing agency that will “deliver customized digital marketing strategies to help brands engage consumers, increase purchase consideration, and drive revenue.” Digital industry veteran Scott Meldrum has been appointed EVP of Digital Solutions to oversee the agency and Learfield’s digital strategy. President/CEO Cole Gahagan: “The genesis of Edge was this demand that our brand partners have come to us and said, ‘Can you help me with my programmatic, my performance marketing?’ The other genesis of this was as ‘Fanbase’ was growing. We heard more and more from the campus side of our school relationships saying, ‘Can you help us build our university's brand, reach more prospective students, more parents through performance marketing.’ ... The combination of those two things have, to a very large measure, led to us launching Edge.” (link, link)

Fundraising Developments…
+ North Carolina's Rams Club announces two new excellence initiatives in The Carolina Athletics Excellence Fund and the Carolina Athletics Excellence Endowment. The Carolina Athletics Excellence Fund “seeks to provide flexible funding in support of Tar Heel student-athletes through gifts that are unrestricted in use and immediately available, allowing Carolina to respond swiftly to current challenges as well as to seize emerging opportunities. The Carolina Athletics Excellence Endowment takes a longer-term approach with gifts being invested to produce an annual yield that will be used to meet any scholarship needs beyond what The Rams Club's Scholarship Endowment Trust provides – and to meet the variety of funding challenges and opportunities Carolina Athletics will face in the years to come.” Rams Club Executive Director John Montgomery: “It's essential that we answer the challenges with adaptable solutions. Carolina is – and always has been – focused on excellence and the complete student-athlete experience. This dynamic environment holds a lot of uncertainty, but also promise. We're excited to work with our supporters to help meet the current needs of our programs and ensure a long and successful future for Carolina Athletics and Tar Heel student-athletes." (link)
+ Boise State has received an anonymous $1M donation to support the Enhancement Fund for women’s basketball. Broncos AD Jeramiah Dickey: "We continue to see growth in donor and fan support around our women's sports programs, and this gift further shows how much Bronco Nation values women's basketball. We are so thankful that these anonymous donors believe in our What's Next mentality as we compete for and win championships in women's basketball and graduate amazing Bronco student-athletes." (link)
+ Bowling Green announces the Campaign for Our Future to support enhancements to Steller Field, home of the Falcons’ baseball team. Planned upgrades include the installation of a new synthetic turf playing surface and perimeter fencing. The estimated cost of the first phase of this project is $2.3M and the goal is to meet fundraising benchmarks to start the project after the 2025 baseball season. Alumnus and BGSU Board of Trustees member Paul J. Hooker has agreed to match gifts up to $500K between now and January 31, 2025, to support the endeavor. Falcons AD Derek van der Merwe: "This project has been a critical mission to our baseball team, supporters, alumni, and fans the last couple of years. BGSU Baseball Head Coach Kyle Hallock has taken steps to comprehensively improve all aspects of our program and to position it for success. This project is another critical step in helping this program to thrive in intercollegiate baseball." (link)

Legal Matters…
+ Penn State won its trademark infringement lawsuit against Vintage Brand, and Sportico’s Michael McCann explains: “Penn State proved that Vintage Brand, which sells vintage T-shirts, throwback hats, retro tees, socks, magnets, koozies, mugs, cutting boards and similar products associated with sports teams, infringed PSU’s trademarks by selling products bearing the school’s imagery without permission. The jury awarded Penn State $28K in damages, but the verdict’s real value is in a judicial finding that infringement occurred. That finding upholds a longstanding relationship between trademark law and college sports merchandise.” (link)
+ Federal authorities are investigating whether former Temple men's basketball student-athlete Hysier Miller bet on his own games and manipulated the outcome of games he played in, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel and David Purdum, who note Miller’s dismissal from Virginia Tech was due to federal investigation and NCAA inquiry. Asked for comment on the allegations, Miller’s attorney replied: “Hysier Miller has overcome more adversity in his 22 years than most people face in their lifetime. He will meet and overcome whatever obstacles lay ahead." Temple Director of Communications Steve Orbanek says the school is "aware of the deeply concerning allegations of sports wagering last season,” adding the school has not "received any requests for information" from state or federal law enforcement but "will cooperate fully should we be contacted."
