Nebraska-Kearney AD Marc Bauer sits down to discuss the state of Loper athletics. On UNK’s Volleyball program, which is having another successful season: “What's so special about our program? One, a lot of our young women are from Nebraska, which makes it really exciting. Two, there's a huge draw. People love coming to volleyball games. There's so much excitement following the young women and they do a great job marketing and so forth. But probably one of the main reasons for a lot of our student-athletes to come to unique is our head coach, Rick Squiers. There's just a presence about coach Coach Squiers that even when games are tough and they're down to the nitty gritty and there's just this calmness about him that he brings to the team - been there, done that. 25 straight years and postseason competition, which is just absolutely amazing because we are in a conference that quite frankly, week in and week out, there are no easy games. Coaches and student-athletes at other institutions do not like playing at UNK and the Health and Sports Center. We like to call it the Health and Sports Center magic. There's just something about it.” On the multi-million dollar, 10K square-foot wrestling facility: “This wrestling facility, quite frankly, like the Health and Sports Center, is probably one of the nicest facilities in Division II. Even, I would say probably nicer than some Division I programs. It's all inclusive. Everything they need is right there in that facility. They've got an athletic training facility. They've got locker rooms. They've got their offices. And so when you walk in the front door, it's got that wow factor. Especially when it comes to recruiting young men for the wrestling program, I think it's something that they can take a lot of pride in as well.” Bauer’s vision for the Lopers: “I want people to understand who we are and where we're going to, and that is to envision an exemplary Division II experience for all of our student athletes, with the intent that they have lifelong success. That's really our goal here at UNK. We want all of our student athletes to be able to experience the Division II experience here at UNK and be able to look back and say, “I would do that all over again,” no matter what they accomplish.” (link)

Clark Atlanta AD Jerel Drew chats with CAU Connect about the growth of the department and credits the new culture and energy to “simply having a little faith, having a little patience, trust in the process, and knowing that every day you have an opportunity to wake up and walk into the door and be surrounded by the wonderful people. […] The secret really is just have dedication, have a love for what you do, and make sure that the people around you, you let them know that you support them and we're in this together.” On the Panthers’ successes: “It's having a focus, having a goal, the ambition to ensure that we are going to be successful in everything that we do, from an athletic perspective, wins, our campaigning, we're going to set a tone in conference. I think that was one of the things when I actually stepped in and from some of our conference calls meeting some of the other ADs, you could really see some of the just tones, as I would say, when they refer to Clark Atlanta University. I'm a very quiet and humble person, but I also am a determined person. I always love the quote, ‘sometimes you have to be the lion so that you can be the lamb that you truly are.’ And I reiterate to our student-athletes, sometimes you have to be the panther so you can be the lamb that you truly are at the end of the day, meaning we've got to be aggressive. And for me, I think the attitude of our student-athletes is that they know they're good enough. Not only are they good enough, they're better. We're going to continue to push that mindset, but more importantly, push that spirit to our student-athletes and our coaches at the head of our programs to let them know that we will not tolerate anything less than a championship mindset and a championship culture in everything we do, from our classroom to our personal life to going into the dorms, anything that they do, from their social experiences, from everything we want to make sure that they get the complete experience to be in the student athlete with a championship mindset.” (link)

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel has approved experimental rules in baseball to permit the expanded use of technology in conference games for the 2025 season. Specifically, teams “can use electronic equipment (tablets) to access analytic information and scouting information in the dugout during conference games in 2025. Teams can also collect in-game swing data with the use of bat sensor technology. However, data on pitch location and swings will not be accessible during games.The NCAA Baseball Rules Committee recommended the experimental rules because collegiate baseball programs are routinely using bat sensor technology, in which data collection devices can be attached or embedded into the knob of bats, during practice to track motion data for player development. However, in the absence of in-game data, the player development opportunities are incomplete. Player swings will change with the task and the environment, and capturing the in-game data can be measured to compare with practice data to provide the most value in player development efforts.” (link)

HBCU enrollment is recovering from the pandemic at a “faster rate than much of the rest of higher education,” according to the Washington Post’s Danielle Douglas-Gabriel, who notes some HBCUs have reported as much as a 30% increase in this year’s freshman class compared with prior years. HBCU leaders attribute the gains largely to years of strategic planning that are now paying off. For instance, Livingstone President Anthony Davis helped raise the school’s freshman retention rate from 50% to 78% by connecting students with academic support centers and engaging them before they could consider leaving. Davis: “Our strategy is working. We’ve been looking at how we recruit and retain students, being very intentional and we’ve seen great results." United Negro College Fund Frederick D. Patterson Research Institute Asst. VP Nadrea R. Njoku adds: “All of our HBCUs are thinking critically about their business models and how they create different streams of revenue and target different populations. … They are in the public eye and taking the opportunity to tell their story." Meanwhile, opinions are mixed on whether the Supreme Court decision ending race-conscious admissions is a driving force behind the enrollment growth, as Douglas-Gabriel points out that applications did increase nearly 30% this year for the 39 HBCUs that use the Common App, including Howard (DI) and North Carolina A&T (DI), but “those schools have reported steady growth for several years.” Benedict VP for Enrollment Management Yohannis A. Job says the SCOTUS decision “has given HBCUs an opportunity to really tell our story and highlight ourselves as an institution of choice. It has allowed young people to ask the question: Is this the place where I will be celebrated…where my identity will not just be a diversity checkbox?” More. (link)
