“I think there's two ways to grow your identity, your image, your reputation. You can do a lot of marketing, identity type work, promotional type things, which we're trying to do, and you can win. So I think that's the realization that we need to do both well to continue to help our conference move forward, and we're certainly going to try to do both well, and I think we're positioned to do that.” That’s UMAC Commissioner Corey Borchardt on WIsconsin-Superior’s Eye of the Swarm podcast as he touches on the state of the league and more. The league’s biggest challenge is membership stability, especially given the challenges Northland has experienced in the last year. Further: “I think there's a member or two in almost every conference that health-wise is maybe struggling more, so we're not unique in that way compared to conferences around us. […] I think the Midwest is actually positioned maybe a little bit more favorably than some other parts of the country on [the enrollment cliff]. We made a decision as a conference, now almost 20 years ago, to go Division III because of the solid number of Division III institutions in this area and the health of those institutions and the strong presence of Division III and I don't think that's really changed.” Borchardt believes the UMAC’s new strategic plan will be fully approved by next fall and have it in front of members as early as this spring. The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel has approved experimental rules in baseball to permit the expanded use of technology in conference games for the 2025 season. Specifically, teams “can use electronic equipment (tablets) to access analytic information and scouting information in the dugout during conference games in 2025. Teams can also collect in-game swing data with the use of bat sensor technology. However, data on pitch location and swings will not be accessible during games.The NCAA Baseball Rules Committee recommended the experimental rules because collegiate baseball programs are routinely using bat sensor technology, in which data collection devices can be attached or embedded into the knob of bats, during practice to track motion data for player development. However, in the absence of in-game data, the player development opportunities are incomplete. Player swings will change with the task and the environment, and capturing the in-game data can be measured to compare with practice data to provide the most value in player development efforts.” (link)
