The Albuquerque Journal’s Geoff Grammer updates on the AD search at New Mexico, indicates a selection could be announced “in the coming days” after UNM President Garnett Stokes held a round of interviews in Denver on Wednesday. Grammer reports Lobos Interim AD David Williams is still in the mix. Parker Executive Search will be paid $60K for its work assisting with the search. (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown is told by multiple sources that Hawaii President David Lassner “did not originally want to hire [outgoing Rainbow Warriors AD Craig] Angelos for the role at all in 2023, preferring the university hire current Associate Athletics Director [for Internal Operations/SWA] Lois Manin instead. But after a national search, other members of the search committee overruled Lassner, and the job went to Angelos. One industry source told me that Angelos was aware there may be plans to remove him at the earliest possible opportunity (and replaced with Manin) as early as his first month on the job. And lo and behold, right before Lassner retires from his role as UH president, Angelos is let go.” (Lassner has since denied these claims, and Manin has said she will not pursue the permanent post). Brown also explains there may have been tension that arose due to Angelos not being from Hawaii. “I’m told many existing UH athletic department employees were not fans of how the department was run over the last 16 months. I do not have any reason to believe that Angelos was abusive or unprofessional in any way, but I can also understand why somebody who had worked somewhere and done things a certain type of way for many years might not appreciate an ‘outsider’ coming in and pushing for significant changes.” While Brown acknowledges he could be wrong, he notes: “Typically, if a university president needs to fire a senior executive over performance related issues, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to the executive…there’d be a paper trail, the executive would know something might be coming, etc.” More. On the much-debated topic of kick times this season, Penn State AD Pat Kraft says: “To be very honest, we signed up for this.” Nebraska AD Troy Dannen adds: “This has been a question for the last 20 years. We as institutions decided that the television revenue was important. And we gave up the ability to place games where maybe it would be most convenient for us. To say we want the revenue, but we (also) want the ability to place these games where they’re optimal from a broadcast standpoint, I think it would be a little disingenuous.” Fox’s data finds that games like Ohio State at Penn State boast ratings about a third higher at noon, and Fox Sports President of Insights and Analytics Mike Mulvihill says: “There’s a belief that prime time is somehow inherently better, but that’s not really matched up by the analysis.” More from The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman and Scott Dochterman. (link)

The Washington Post’s Ben Strauss acknowledges Ohio State fans’ pushback on the number of noon games the Buckeyes have played this year is “probably” an overreaction but notes: “Ohio State’s early-bird schedule is, in part, a quirk of this particular season. … And it’s a testament to the uniqueness of the Big Ten’s TV deal, which is unlike any in the history of sports TV.” Strauss explains that Fox owns the first three picks of the draft [with ESPN and NBC as part of the league’s media rights contracts] each year and landed the date for the Ohio-State Michigan game first. It avoided the West Coast schools…that joined the Big Ten this season because they don’t play 9 AM local games. Fox has selected an Ohio State game with a top pick four times; other games have fallen to the noon slot after other networks made picks.” Former Fox Sports President Bob Thompson tells Strauss: “Fox is going to put their best chance at a rating in that window. They’re doing what’s in their rights in that contract.” Other factors also contribute, including the league’s overall reticence to playing night games and Michigan and Ohio State being able to veto any night games. Strauss: “NBC has expressed its frustrations to numerous stakeholders around the conference, according to people with knowledge of the conversations, suggesting that the network did not understand the full extent of the prime-time restrictions. The network has argued that it was informed of the full night game veto rights (and they were expanded from the Big Ten’s previous agreements) only after the term sheets for the deals were agreed to and announced, according to multiple people familiar with the deals.” Lots more. A hearing in former Florida football commit Jaden Rashada’s lawsuit against Gators HC Billy Napier, former UF staffer Marcus Castro-Walker and booster Hugh Hathcock has been scheduled for early December. U.S. District Court Judge Casey Rodgers will hear oral arguments for the multiple motions to dismiss on December 18, in Pensacola, Florida. (link)

Nebraska Football HC Matt Rhule predicts the upcoming transfer portal window will be chaotic due to the new roster limits. “The portal’s already flooded. … Just think about 20-30 guys from every school having to go into the portal and the effect it’s going to have on FCS and Division II and NAIA and Division III.” Rhule adds that there will be players on Nebraska’s team who “love this place and this’ll be the last time they put their pads on to be a Husker, and all settled in a courtroom somewhere. It’s a shame.” (link)

Utah Football HC Kyle Whittingham talks about how NIL and the transfer portal have forced him to change the way he builds rosters: “No excuses, but that was our formula: recruit, develop and manage. And with the turnover and with the way the portal is now, that system is – I don't want to say it's a dinosaur – but it is very hard to continue to have work. That also plays into you’ve got to take a hard look at your schemes because your schemes better be plug-and-play. You can’t have a scheme that’s so complicated and so in-depth that it takes a guy two or three years to learn it because you don’t have that time anymore. … You collect all the talent you can in the offseason and hope it gels and has chemistry and they better be able to assimilate the offensive and defensive schemes.” Whittingham also remarked that it’s “going to be a heavy shopping season for us in the portal” and explained the program has already established an NIL budget. “It will be a big bump in how much Utah will be paying to players.” (link, link)

Kentucky Football HC Mark Stoops remarks that when it comes to NIL “some institutions are built differently than others if you don’t have to fundraise, you know what I mean, if the resources are there. I think the only thing that really has been new, or extremely challenging, has been for myself raising all the money for NIL – relatively by myself and with [GM/Special Asst. to the HC] Eddie Gran doing that. And that’s really not something I signed up for, being a fundraiser. I’d like to spend my time with my players and developing them and being around them and having strong relationships with them. I think that’s just the one area. But again, I don’t want to make too much of that because it is what it is, and we’re figuring it out. And I’m completely excited about the future and getting these problems solved.” (link)

Washington State football student-athlete David Gusta says coaches or collective representatives who tamper with players have done so with him directly via their personal Instagram accounts. “Which is highly illegal, right? So, basically I’ll go up to Coach and I’ll be like, ‘Coach, check this out.” He also says coaches have reached out to his mom, including one who “started spamming [her] phone.” Gusta adds that on one call he told the representatives from a school he wasn’t interested in transferring and the person talked to him as if he knew him. “I’m like, ‘I don’t know you, you don’t know anything I’ve been through, you don’t know what kind of person I am, you don’t know what kind of scheme I’d fit, all you care about is the 10% you get for signing this player to that school.” (link)

The Players Era Festival is set to announce a presenting sponsorship lineup of Eli Lilly, MGM Resorts, and Starbucks, per SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, who reports each brand will have on-court logos and activations throughout the week around the tournament. EverWonder Studio CEO Ian Orefice declined to reveal financial details or terms of the deals, but tells Portnoy: “Our intention is certainly to be together for a long, long time.” Orefice adds: “When we set out to create Players Era, it was really about building a new, equitable future for college basketball and delivering for the fans. So, for us, beyond the financial commitment, it was aligning with brands that also value the future of college basketball with Players Era and how we're trying to build it.” (link); More from Players Era CEO Seth Berger: “We have $9 million in NIL opportunities outside of competition for this year’s festival, and with five top-25 teams, undefeated programs, and some of the most exciting players in the country, we’re going to deliver an unrivaled showcase for college basketball.” Sportico’s Daniel Libit also notes Players Era “recently hired former NCAA official Jeremy McCool as its VP of institutional relations, and Matthew Dooley, of grassroots basketball company Hoop Group, as VP of operations and marketing.” (link)

Former San José State football student-athlete Jeff Garcia is establishing the "Jeff Garcia Endowment for Football Student-Athletes,” which will provide scholarships, mentorship programs, and resources to enhance the overall experience of Spartans football student-athletes. Garcia: “Helping student-athletes achieve their goals has always been a passion of mine. I know firsthand the dedication and hard work required to excel in academics and athletics. This endowment is my way of giving back to the program that shaped my career and helping future generations thrive.” (link)

Houston AD Eddie Nuñez met with the UH Board of Regents this week and indicated the Cougars are in the “final stages” of completing a new multimedia rights deal that’s “going to be a huge increase to our budget in many, many ways besides just dollars and cents.” Since September 1, Nuñez explained the Cougars have received over 40 major gifts, including some that were in the works before his arrival. “Getting them to the finish line was huge. We've done some really monumental things for the department.” Nuñez specifically highlighted a $10M gift from Cemo Family Foundation for a football ops center and partnership with Chevron. As part of a budget restructure, Nuñez informed regents that he has held off filling a couple of positions, and “those salary savings are also budget savings. As much as we know we need to fill those positions, at this point I want to make sure we do what's best for our department.” Nuñez went on to show a chart indicating Houston has the smallest budget in Big 12 at just above $80M for FY23 and said: “Smallest budget and largest subsidy, that's the challenge we face here,” UH president Renu Khator said: “It's not that the university has not supported athletics, actually it has supported more than any university in the country, Division I, II or III; however, we have the smallest budget. This is the time we have to figure out how we do business and leverage our great city of Houston and the businesses around it.” Also from Nuñez: The “Houston Blue” merchandise rollout has brought $545K in retail value; all retailers have placed re-orders for more. Arkansas State AD Jeff Purinton pens a letter to fans about industry changes and House, noting “we have no plans to reduce the number of sports we currently offer. In fact, we want to be in a position to offer more.” On House implications: “Depending on how much support we receive from local industries and the community, this could result in substantial new streams of revenue that will allow A-State Athletics to remain competitive with other Sun Belt teams. […] We will actively fundraise to create new scholarships for student-athletes and hope to raise sufficient funding to support those new scholarships.” Purinton goes on to note ASU is undergoing a full budget evaluation to identify areas of savings or new revenue and will explore playing surface sponsorships. “While these initiatives are steps in the right direction, they won't be enough. In addition to taking a proactive approach and implementing our own strategies, we will continue to monitor the national landscape to determine best practices and other potential options for the future. The long-term success of A-State Athletics will require the continued backing of everyone who proudly supports our student-athletes.” (link)

D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers reports “The 'A4' Conferences have agreed on a general framework for the 34-man roster declaration. It could differ for some other sports. Conferences will have the right to make the declaration an earlier date, so more decisions coming. The expectation is that instituting 'Fall Roster Limits' will be discussed and more by the ABCA soon. For instance, you could see the roster limit on the first day of fall workouts be 40 (and no more), and then 34 by December 1.” Rogers adds: “Ultimately, a December 1 drop dead date on the 34-man roster is just entirely too late for the student athlete. Really curious to see which leagues move that date up internally. Some prominent coaches actually wanted the 34-man roster set at the start of the fall.” (link)

U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) responds to pushback over his proposal to punish players who break NIL contracts, telling Sportico’s Daniel Libit that “everyone should have skin in the game.” Libit points out that Tuberville “in 2012 became a textbook example of the historically one-sided expectations of loyalty when it comes to college athletes and athletic departments’ existing employees. Tuberville was having dinner with some [Texas Tech] recruits at the time when he was announced as the next coach at Cincinnati. Reportedly, Tuberville left the recruits mid-meal and did not return. Asked about his employment history in coaching, Tuberville said: “Here’s the deal: I think coaches should be held accountable. … But, you know, if you can get an AD or a president or a school to give you just a one-way contract – where, if they fire you, you get paid, but if you leave, you don’t have to pay anything – I mean, you’ve, you’ve hit the jackpot. But that’s what’s happening with colleges. I mean, these kids are coming in, they’re not getting a contract, but they’re getting promised a certain amount of money. And then, you know, there’s no consequences if they get up and leave.” Tuberville added that despite the many public examples of college coaches jumping ship midway through their contract term, with seemingly no repercussion, buyouts in employment agreements do often serve as a deterrent. “There were times that people would call me and say, ‘Coach, what’s your buyout? Five million? Well, we can’t afford that.’ Then they’re going down the road. So there is some repercussion. It is not just the ones you see that work out. There are many, many more that don’t work out.” (link)

A dozen states are asking the North Carolina Supreme Court to dismiss the ACC’s lawsuit against Florida State because FSU never agreed to be sued outside of Florida. The states include Florida, South Carolina, Kentucky, Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Utah. The Athletic’s Matt Baker: “This week’s argument centers on sovereign immunity. That’s the concept that generally shields state entities (like public schools) from being sued in other states. The ACC contends Florida State and Clemson waived that right by joining and remaining in the conference, which is based in North Carolina. If the ACC is correct, its lawsuits against Florida State and Clemson can proceed in the conference’s home courts in North Carolina — courts that, so far, have made favorable rulings for the league.” (link)

Expansion of the College Football Playoff has amplified frustration with the rankings rather than tone it down, according to CBS’ Dennis Dodd, who notes tripling the size of the field only means there are that many more teams who could potentially feel snubbed. Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark, for instance, is a “little puzzled” by the current rankings in which BYU is behind SMU despite beating the Mustangs earlier this season. “If the metrics are all about strength of schedule and body of work and head-to-head, I don't see some of the consistencies that should be. BYU being below a team they beat earlier in the year, on the road, with identical records is a little surprising to me. … Having Colorado No. 16 when they've won seven of eight. In this new world of the transfer portal, those preseason polls don't mean much because of the turnover and roster management. You don't know what you really have until you get a few weeks into the season ... It's certainly playing out at Colorado. It's certainly playing out with Arizona State and their momentum." Meanwhile, Dodd “was able to obtain exclusively a portion of the strength of schedule information used by the committee. The Big 12 is tied with the SEC for most wins against teams with records above .500 with 36 each. That information comes from SportsSource analytics, an industry-leading firm out of Atlanta and favored by the CFP.” More from Dodd. (link)

The SWAC is investigating if Jackson State has access to Arkansas Pine Bluff practice film prior to their matchup earlier this month. UAPB HC Alonzo Hampton found out a former walk-on’s account had accessed the film from an IP address in Clinton, Miss., nearby Jackson State, after being told of such happenings by a player. That former walk-on, who is no longer with the team, told ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura that he did not release anything to JSU. Bonagura adding: “The player reaffirmed to ESPN that he did not share his credentials with anyone at Jackson State but said he had shared that information with teammates at UAPB in the past and that there was a loose culture around sharing login information within the team. […] It's unclear why UAPB had not removed his access after he was no longer on the team. A source familiar with the video-sharing software cautioned against using the IP address as some kind of proof that the film was accessed near Jackson, as various measures can be used to alter the location of an IP address. The software has a security feature that would have allowed UAPB to limit access for each account to specific devices, but it was not used.” (link)

NCAA Rules…
+ The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel has approved experimental rules in baseball to permit the expanded use of technology in conference games for the 2025 season. Specifically, teams “can use electronic equipment (tablets) to access analytic information and scouting information in the dugout during conference games in 2025. Teams can also collect in-game swing data with the use of bat sensor technology. However, data on pitch location and swings will not be accessible during games. The NCAA Baseball Rules Committee recommended the experimental rules because collegiate baseball programs are routinely using bat sensor technology, in which data collection devices can be attached or embedded into the knob of bats, during practice to track motion data for player development. However, in the absence of in-game data, the player development opportunities are incomplete. Player swings will change with the task and the environment, and capturing the in-game data can be measured to compare with practice data to provide the most value in player development efforts.” (link)
