Oregon remains atop the College Football Playoff rankings followed by Ohio State, Texas, Penn State, Notre Dame, Miami (FL), Georgia, Tennessee, SMU, Indiana, Boise State and Clemson in the top 12. Alabama, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Arizona State are the next quartet. The rest: Tulane, Iowa State, BYU, Texas A&M, Missouri, UNLV, Illinois, Kansas State and Colorado. (link)

Michigan AD/College Football Playoff Selection Committee Chair Warde Manuel fielded questions from the media after the rankings release and said this when asked about how Boise State’s close win over Wyoming impacted their evaluation: “Well, they won, and we value winning. We value how the teams play, and in the end, the scoreboard matters. What they have done, the only loss they have, as you know, is a very close three-point loss at Oregon at the beginning of the year, and they've run the table since then. … We think highly of Boise State and will continue to watch them. We have some people on the committee that played at Wyoming when they were coaches, and they really say it's a tough environment to play in. Obviously Wyoming gave Boise State a great game, but Boise State won.” Asked why Alabama was the top three-loss team, Manuel explained: “Because of their win over Georgia. They won against Missouri. They've beat South Carolina and they won at LSU in dominant fashion. When you put those four wins against Mississippi and what they did, they had the win against Georgia and the win at South Carolina, but they had a tough loss to Florida; lost to LSU in overtime.” CFP Executive Director Rich Clark also fielded questions, including one about how contentious the room gets during discussions, about which he said: “It's not one of these rooms where people are afraid to speak their minds if they think differently about how teams are playing. There are moments when there's a lot of debate in the room and people are expressing different perspectives, and that is the great thing about what we do. That gets us to a point where we can really figure that we have done everything we can do and made all the arguments and done the votes in a way that we get what we believe are the best 25 teams in the country.” More Q&A. Freshly minted Villanova AD Eric Roedl during yesterday’s introductory press conference called Men’s Basketball HC Kyle Neptune and Women’s Basketball HC Denise Dillon “outstanding people, great leaders for these programs,” adding: “I look forward to partnering with them.” The Inquirer’s Mike Sielski consequently notes that Roedl “gave no indication of how long he would be inclined to allow such a partnership to last, though. … What Roedl has now is a passionate booster base with deep pockets and a men’s basketball program that less than three years ago was the best in the Big East and has been declining in quality and relevance ever since. Men’s basketball is the athletic department’s revenue-driver. It’s an inextricable part of the university’s brand. That reality means that Roedl’s most meaningful experience, the period of his life that best prepared him for this job, wasn’t the four years he spent at Villanova as an undergraduate and a member of the tennis team. It was his 13 years at Oregon, at a bigger institution that better exemplifies the increasingly transactional nature of college athletics.” With respect to what he wants from head coaches, Roedl explained: “I think that connectivity piece is more important than ever with the transfer portal and mental-health pressures and outside challenges. … The coaches who can connect are the ones who are going to be successful.” Sielski: “If Neptune is connecting with his players in that way, it’s not apparent in the Wildcats’ performance on the court, and it hasn’t been apparent, really, since he took over.” (link)

Georgia Tech has sent a poll to students asking for feedback on a potential increase in student athletics fees. The poll asks which program they are enrolled in, if they are in favor of an athletics fee increase from $127 to $152 per semester for full-time in-person students and if they are in favor of an athletics fee increase from $127 to $152 per semester for online students. Ohio Representative Brian Stewart (R-Ashville) during an NIL hearing this week wondered aloud whether Ohio State could get back its vacated wins from 2010. "Reggie Bush has got his Heisman back. Penn State sued the NCAA. They got all of their 111 wins back in just three years, by the way. So if we are going to expand the law here again, to help Ohio State attract new student-athletes, isn't it time for the NCAA to restore those wins and records and for Ohio State to maybe be a little more active in that process?” Buckeyes AD Ross Bjork, who was at the hearing in support of HB 660 – which states public and private universities cannot keep student-athletes from earning NIL money – responded: “That's a new conversation for me being new here. Those rule violations would not be violations in today's model. How does that get recognized? I'm not sure, but moving forward a new governance model based on just resources should be applied and we are working on it." (link)

Oregon State AD Scott Barnes says of Football HC Trent Bray’s first season: “Given what he took on here and the momentum that’s been generated, I like where our future is going.” Barnes noted Bray was faced with a “total, total rebuild,” adding: “Would we all liked to have been in a bowl game, and can we still be? That would have been great. But in the context of a rebuild with a new coach and where we sit, and you think about how invested these players have been, and the fight and resilience that comes from the top…all in all, it’s working out.” Barnes declined to specify how much NIL funding the Beavers need to sustain a competitive football program but noted: “We have a read on what it will take, and that has to do with trends, what we saw this past year, and where we’re headed. We’re not completely there, and we’re out raising money for it. But it’s possible.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner reiterates his position that Thanksgiving Eve is the “greatest untapped terrain available for the conferences and their media partners, with an audience desperate for football and nothing available.” Wilner contends the Big 12 and Pac-12 should fill the vacuum, and Gridiron Founder/President Dave Brown tells him: “It could be the right opportunity for somebody and a way to separate themselves from other conferences. … The only thing going on the night before Thanksgiving is the NBA (and the NHL).” Wilner acknowledges there are obstacles to hosting such games, including the campus environment, the preparation time (namely, teams couldn’t play Saturday-Wednesday) and rest for conference championships. As for the time between games, Brown points out that “this year and next year, there are two byes. In 2026, there’s only one, but they might have Week 0 games green-lighted by then.” Wilner also notes: “In a world where Stanford-Wake Forest, Utah-UCF and USC-Rutgers are conference games, university presidents and athletic directors have proven they will accept any inconvenience for the sake of every last dime. Thanksgiving Eve offers the best, and perhaps only chance to claim new ground on the media landscape. By 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday, the football world is ready. The NFL is dark. The logistics are challenging but surmountable.” (link)

Georgetown Men’s Basketball HC Ed Cooley says he used a “poor choice of words” when talking about Hoyas student-athlete Jayden Epps’ YoY defensive improvement. Cooley said of Epps, who attended Illinois last season: "His development defensively, it's almost like it's a new player. … I'm pretty sure that'll make national news when I say that, but I never said the school it was.” Cooley later explained on social media that “my comment today was said in jest with one of my players, but I admit it was a poor choice of words. I have the utmost respect for the University of Illinois, its men's basketball program, coaches and players." Asked about Cooley’s remarks, Illini HC Brad Underwood said: "That's not even worth a waste of my time on. I don't know what he was referencing that about, and Jayden had a productive freshman year here. But I'm not going to get into all that. I'll let our fans and everybody else have some fun, which I'm sure they probably are." (link)

Notre Dame Assoc. AD/Creative Director Emma Schneider shares how the Fighting Irish created branding for its football matchup against Army at Yankee Stadium last weekend. “The story of the game was the 100 year anniversary of Notre Dame vs. Army at the Polo Grounds in 1924 – right across the river from current Yankee Stadium. That game inspired the famous Four Horsemen article by Grantland Rice, and one of College Football’s most iconic photos. The logo centers on the reimagined four horsemen, dynamically leaping into Yankee Stadium. There are a number of easter eggs in the mark, including the shape of the original Polo Grounds. … In the leadup to the game, we took advantage of the opportunity to highlight four current Notre Dame football players (a new generation of ‘four horsemen’) with graphics inside and out of the Sheraton Hotel Times Square – honoring 1924 but with a modern energy. And last but certainly not least, we got the opportunity to work with the amazing Tracie Ching to illustrate a one-of-a-kind screen-printed game poster of the Four Horsemen. Her incredible work featured throughout the event.” Photos inside. (link)

The company is now expecting FY24 same-store sales to grow between 3.6% and 4.2%, up from a previous range of 2.5% to 3.5% and ahead of the 3.4% growth that Wall Street analysts had expected. Dick’s reported net income for the three-month period that ended Nov. 2 of $228M, or $2.75 per share, compared with $201M, or $2.39 per share, a year earlier. Villanova held an introductory press conference with new AD Eric Roedl today, who said in his remarks: “We have 24 sports, and we want each program to know that they are valued, supported and positioned for success. Meeting this objective is going to require that we match resources with our expectations and I know that our Nova Nation is up for this challenge. Men’s and women's basketball are a critically important part of our DNA at Villanova, and we will continue to innovate and strategically invest in these programs to ensure we maintain our hard-earned place among the nation's elite. Winning in basketball is important to our university and to our community.” In speaking directly to Wildcat student-athletes, Roedl said: “I can recall my time at Villanova as a student-athlete. As you can tell, that was a long time ago, but it was a transformational experience for me and ultimately was a big part of why I pursued a career in college athletics. You are a talented and special group, and our work is all about supporting you as you work toward realizing your fullest potential. Life as a student athlete in today's environment can be incredibly rewarding as well as extremely challenging, and I know that you all know that. We will work tirelessly on your behalf and will be fully committed to developing and positioning you for success.” Full press conference. (link)

Clemson AD Graham Neff in a letter to IPTAY members explains the Tigers plan to add 150 new scholarships and share the full $20.5M in revenue with student-athletes pursuant to the House settlement. “In order to effectively manage this process, we are establishing a centralized ‘Front Office’ to oversee contract details, compliance, and allocation strategy. As we build out our staff for this new unit, we have retained expertise with professional sports backgrounds and negotiation skillsets. We are excited about the potential of regulated commercial [NIL] opportunities for our student-athletes. We have created an in-house agency by partnering with Everett Sports Marketing (ESM) to provide expert guidance to our staff and student-athletes, and to connect our students with businesses seeking brand ambassadors. This partnership, along with the previously announced Clemson Ventures, will empower our student-athletes to maximize their NIL potential. The settlement’s call for new oversight of legitimate “fair market value” deals is a necessary piece of the future state.” Neff also notes all contributions to the 110 Society made between July 1, 2024 and June 30, 2025 will be eligible to earn IPTAY Priority Points and announces that an anonymous donor has pledged an initial $3M contribution to “emphasize the IPTAY and 110 Society points program.” More from Neff. Teamworks has acquired NIL operations company Basepath, and “The best of Basepath’s products will be incorporated into Teamworks’ suite of products, including General Manager, Influencer, and Wallet.” Teamworks Founder/CEO Zach Maurides: “Conferences and Athletic Departments are quickly transforming their operations and hiring new roles to make roster and compensation decisions they’ve never had to make. The union of Teamworks and Basepath means they'll have an enterprise-grade platform, developed by the most trusted names in NIL tech, to help them confidently build their best team and manage payments. […] Often, technology is a market disruptor. But in the case of collegiate athletics today, ever-changing legislation has been the driver. Technology has the opportunity to be a stabilizing force. We believe we have a responsibility to help our industry mature, inject a degree of certainty, and arm people with the technology that helps them serve the student-athlete.” Basepath Co-Founder/CEO Thomas Thomas Jr.: “Athletic Departments have to evolve quickly – but the technology must innovate even faster to stay ahead of the curve. By joining Teamworks, we’re positioned to build category-defining products to power the next era of collegiate athletics.” (link)
|
More from Maurides: “Over the last few years, Basepath was a company that we kept hearing from our customers was doing great work. Where we’d traditionally focused on the school side of NIL, they had really focused on building solutions for collectives. So they were working on the other half of the equation. … My view is that [NIL] is a forever problem that is very complex [for schools]. We are betting on the continued professionalization of college athletic departments and the way that they operate.” As such, the company hopes to provide more services to schools to keep pace with the changes, and Maurides notes: “When we acquired INFLCR it had a tiny percentage of the market; today we have nearly 75% of DI institutions leveraging the product. And why is that? It’s not because of what we had in 2020, it’s what we built quarter-by-quarter in 2021 and 2022. 70% of our Influencer product today was built post-acquisition, and we’re going to take the exact same approach here.” (link)

More on the Mountain West’s response to the Pac-12’s poaching fee lawsuit from Sportico’s Michael McCann, who points out the MWC contends the “scheduling agreement enabled the Pac-12 to meet the FBS requirement that conferences have at least eight teams. As the MWC tells it, the agreement empowered the Pac-12 to (1) merge with the MWC; (2) offer membership to some but not all MWC schools; or (3) dissolve the Pac-12 altogether. The Pac-12 ‘chose’ the second option but, as MWC puts it, ‘now complains that the fees it unconditionally guaranteed to pay the MWC for damaging the integrity of the MWC by cherry-picking select MWC schools violate the law.’ Another alleged defect in the Pac-12’s complaint is that it does not clarify how consumers in the relevant market are harmed. The MWC says the Pac-12’s complaint confusingly references member schools as being from the West Coast while other times describing the schools as untethered to geography.” Furthermore, the MWC points out the scheduling agreement doesn’t bar the Pac-12 from recruiting “the over 100 schools outside the MWC for potential Pac-12 membership.” This point underscores the scheduling agreement as limited in scope to two conferences and of limited impact on the broader market for big time college football. Conference USA will partner with Rev Entertainment to explore a valuation of the league’s naming rights, SBJ’s Ben Portnoy reports, adding that C-USA Associate Commissioner/CRO Drew Maulsby will “likely serve as point man for the league regarding the partnership.” One league source tells Portnoy: “We're being disingenuous if we don't try to explore every opportunity to increase revenue for all of our institutions, including our conference. Looking at something like this would certainly be unique, because you've got the traditional way of identifying conferences. But, ultimately, conferences are just names, right?” A second league source adds: “You go where the revenue is. Whether it's looking at private equity or logos on the field, there were a lot of things probably 20 years ago that they didn't think would be monetized that are now. Maybe things are just happening a little more rapidly, but this is one of them.” (link)

Over the last six seasons – his second campaign in Chapel Hill – he has coached our team to six bowl berths, including an Orange Bowl, while mentoring 18 NFL draft picks. He and his wife Sally have done an outstanding job supporting the Carolina community, including raising funds for UNC Children's Hospital while hosting other popular events such as the Ladies Day Clinic. Both also have been terrific in leading our program during some incredibly tough stretches, including the tragic passing of wide receiver Tylee Craft this season. … We thank Coach Brown for his dedication to Carolina, and wish him, Sally and their family all the best." Money Matters…
+ Barstool President Dave Portnoy details his role in helping Michigan flip QB commit Bryce Underwood, explaining that he got a call from “the Michigan football team. They said, ‘Hey, there’s this donor who wants to talk to you. I said that I’m doing this [landing Underwood] by myself, and I don’t need to talk to anybody. And they said, ‘Please, this woman is a big fan of Barstool and you; she’d love to talk to you. Her name is Jolin. … They said her husband is a guy by the name of Larry Ellison, you ever heard of him? I said Larry Ellison? The, like, number two richest guy on the planet? Yeah, I’ll take that phone call.” In a subsequent Zoom with the two, Jolin Ellison said she “never wanted to live [the Brady Hoke] era again. I can’t stomach waking up on a Saturday knowing we’re not the best team on the field. Jolin said on that first call, ‘I needed somebody from Michigan to step up and show they cared as much as I did. And then it was like the mega powers united.'” Portnoy goes on to say he indicated to Jolin Ellison that he was initially uneasy receiving all the credit for Underwood’s flip, to which Ellison responded: “I don’t need the credit. I need the national championships.” More from Portnoy. (link)

We will continue to work with our institutions on event management policies at all Big 12 venues.” (link)
+ Kent State is partnering with The Blue and Gold Collective to enhance NIL opportunities. The partnership is facilitated in part by Family & Children Services, which will provide student-athletes the opportunity to “attend and promote F&CS initiatives.” Golden Flashes AD Randale Richmond: "Adding the Blue and Gold Collective to our sponsorship portfolio is yet another exciting opportunity for Kent State Athletics. In the changing landscape of collegiate athletics, it's essential for the growth of our programs to have sponsorship partners like the Blue and Gold Collective to aid all Kent State student-athletes with the opportunity to leverage, promote, and maximize their personal brand. This partnership aligns with our mission to graduate student-athletes, boldly prepared for life after sport, and win championships.” (link)
