Freshly minted Portland State AD Matt Billings’ new contract runs through June 2029 and will pay him $220K annually, according to CollegeAD. Billings can also earn $10K for every $1M in cash contributions received to support the department. Should he terminate the contract he must provide 30 days’ notice and would owe PSU $40K. If Portland State parts ways with Billings without cause before November 14, 2026, it would owe Billings 36 months of base pay. That figure drops to 24 months if Billings is let go between that date and November 14, 2027, and 12 months thereafter. (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger takes an in-depth look at how the 12-team College Football Playoff came about and how it’s impacted this season. Former CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock tells him: “It’s so beautiful what the 12 has done. The real beauty is the value it places on conference championships. We’re seeing that. The premium it places on conference championships…it’s magic.” Dellenger notes that entering the final week of the regular season, roughly 25 teams remain alive for the playoff, and 22 matchups this week, including several rivalry games, will impact the postseason race. “The 12-team format has made games that were completely irrelevant in the four-team system significantly impactful to a 12-team field. There’s 6-5 West Virginia at 7-4 Texas Tech, which could affect Big 12 tiebreakers; and a game featuring, of all teams, six-loss Oregon State, which can spoil Boise State’s playoff hopes; and don’t forget about three-win Nevada’s mission to ruin rival UNLV’s shot at a conference title and a potential playoff spot.” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey subsequently remarks: “I felt like those who said, ‘Well, if you expand, you’ll negatively impact the regular season!’ They missed two things. The four-team playoff already did that. When someone lost once and certainly twice, they were out. And secondly, by adding teams, you bring a lot more people into the conversation in the month of November. We have results that confirm that thesis.” Lots more from Dellenger, including former Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick’s recollection of agreeing to limit first-round byes to conference champions “and they all looked at me like I was crazy. I thought, ‘I’m going to get the s*** beat out of me back home.” Did he? “Oh yeah.” (link)

Nevada plans to invest $50M into its football program over the next 10 years, and Wolf Pack AD Stephanie Rempe explains the rationale: “If our football team is successful, it elevates our university. When you elevate your university, you grow enrollment, you grow prestige, you grow awareness, people come to that school and that impacts the workforce. And the workforce is what companies want to come to a community where there is an R1 Carnegie Research Institution, there's a Division I football program, a community that's a college town that brings businesses here and elevates a community. … We know that in order to do all those things, football has to win. You can't talk about those things when football's not winning.” In a recent meeting with donors, Rempe says her team “showed the data, and it showed how we're at the bottom of the league for competitive investment, for ticket prices, for season-ticket sales, all of those things. I think they understand that we need to do that. I think most people if you have any time with Coach Choate, you understand he has a vision and he's going to work his tail off and he's building something pretty special. And so I think there's a desire to support that." Facilities-wise, Rempe says the Wolf Pack is “at the point where we have an incredibly efficient but very well designed indoor facility that we believe we can get the indoor and both intramural fields – Wolf Pack Park and John Sala Field – all of that done for $25M.” More from Rempe. The ACC will expand its partnership with Elevate, according to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, who reports the “revamped strategy between the league and firm is expected to center on group sales for ticketed ACC Championships such as football, men's and women's basketball, baseball and gymnastics. Elevate also has plans to hire a sales team based at the ACC’s Charlotte headquarters. It's expected that group will be headed by Roy Tewell, Elevate's VP of Sales and Service.” (link)

A vocal group of Mississippi State supporters are calling for the Bulldogs to return to the interlocking MSU logo on the helmets, and Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel explains that “in the past, no one inside an athletic department would pay much attention, especially since the group is made up of everyday fans, neither massive nor monied. An athletic director could hear the suggestions/complaints and, if they chose, just ignore it.” To Wetzel, the situation symbolizes a bigger question in the NIL era: “Does a fan get more of a say if, rather than donating to a new locker room that might take years to complete, you now give a more ‘active dollar’ that pays the quarterback?” MSU fan and interlocking logo supporter Isaac Sparks tells Wetzel: “It’s throwing a bone to the people you are asking to donate to NIL so you can buy the players. It’s more expensive than ever to be a fan.” Bulldogs AD Zac Selmon met with Sparks for 45 minutes recently to discuss the topic, and Wetzel points out that “that alone was something that might not have occurred in the past.” Selmon tells Wetzel: “I came up on the fundraising side, so I’ve always been about personal relationships and listening to people. I’ll always filter that with how it aligns with the long-term goals of the athletic department and our values as a whole. Isaac has great passion for Mississippi State. His research was really good. I think we both left there thinking we are on the same team.” Wetzel concludes: “Selmon and modern athletic directors want that. In the end, someone has to make a decision, but in the relentless battle for money, you need everyone pulling the rope. The so-called little guy can matter as much as the millionaire.” (link)

Clemson Football HC Dabo Swinney is confident the Tigers will be able to compete with anyone post-House, saying: "Ain't nobody gonna have more money than Clemson. Nobody. For the first time ever. So that'll be good." Swinney also noted that making IPTAY Priority Points available for fans who donate to the 110 Society collective is a crucial step moving forward. "It's critical to create this partnership to where you can get the points, you can get the credit because it's the only way we're gonna be able to compete between now and July. … The NIL's gonna be different in July. It's gonna have to meet the standard. Right now, there's no standard." As far as how the football team will distribute revenue among players, Swinney says it’s unclear whether it’s more prudent to jump from 85 to 105 full scholarships because it might be best to have revenue-sharing deals with fewer athletes and offer bigger slices to each. He adds: “When I say nobody is going to have more money than Clemson, it's because of the commitment of our administration." (link)

Armed with a “major increase in support” from donors, Northwestern will be “very aggressive” with NIL offers in the transfer portal next month, according to Wildcat Report’s Louie Vaccher, who writes: “Northwestern has a two-step plan to quickly become competitive in the Big Ten. The program is prepared to first ‘do everything we can’ to retain the top talent already on the roster with NIL packages and prevent them from transferring out. Then, they will target and go after several key players in the portal with ‘very competitive’ NIL offers. … Why the sudden change? Not only has the program experienced a significant increase in its available NIL dollars, but they have also streamlined the admissions process to enable prospective transfers to get admitted by the start of winter quarter classes, on Jan. 6. That, in and of itself, is a major breakthrough to help the Wildcats be more active and competitive in the portal.” (link)

Oregon remains atop the College Football Playoff rankings followed by Ohio State, Texas, Penn State, Notre Dame, Miami (FL), Georgia, Tennessee, SMU, Indiana, Boise State and Clemson in the top 12. Alabama, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Arizona State are the next quartet. The rest: Tulane, Iowa State, BYU, Texas A&M, Missouri, UNLV, Illinois, Kansas State and Colorado. (link)

Michigan AD/College Football Playoff Selection Committee Chair Warde Manuel fielded questions from the media after the rankings release and said this when asked about how Boise State’s close win over Wyoming impacted their evaluation: “Well, they won, and we value winning. We value how the teams play, and in the end, the scoreboard matters. What they have done, the only loss they have, as you know, is a very close three-point loss at Oregon at the beginning of the year, and they've run the table since then. … We think highly of Boise State and will continue to watch them. We have some people on the committee that played at Wyoming when they were coaches, and they really say it's a tough environment to play in. Obviously Wyoming gave Boise State a great game, but Boise State won.” Asked why Alabama was the top three-loss team, Manuel explained: “Because of their win over Georgia. They won against Missouri. They've beat South Carolina and they won at LSU in dominant fashion. When you put those four wins against Mississippi and what they did, they had the win against Georgia and the win at South Carolina, but they had a tough loss to Florida; lost to LSU in overtime.” CFP Executive Director Rich Clark also fielded questions, including one about how contentious the room gets during discussions, about which he said: “It's not one of these rooms where people are afraid to speak their minds if they think differently about how teams are playing. There are moments when there's a lot of debate in the room and people are expressing different perspectives, and that is the great thing about what we do. That gets us to a point where we can really figure that we have done everything we can do and made all the arguments and done the votes in a way that we get what we believe are the best 25 teams in the country.” More Q&A. Freshly minted Villanova AD Eric Roedl during yesterday’s introductory press conference called Men’s Basketball HC Kyle Neptune and Women’s Basketball HC Denise Dillon “outstanding people, great leaders for these programs,” adding: “I look forward to partnering with them.” The Inquirer’s Mike Sielski consequently notes that Roedl “gave no indication of how long he would be inclined to allow such a partnership to last, though. … What Roedl has now is a passionate booster base with deep pockets and a men’s basketball program that less than three years ago was the best in the Big East and has been declining in quality and relevance ever since. Men’s basketball is the athletic department’s revenue-driver. It’s an inextricable part of the university’s brand. That reality means that Roedl’s most meaningful experience, the period of his life that best prepared him for this job, wasn’t the four years he spent at Villanova as an undergraduate and a member of the tennis team. It was his 13 years at Oregon, at a bigger institution that better exemplifies the increasingly transactional nature of college athletics.” With respect to what he wants from head coaches, Roedl explained: “I think that connectivity piece is more important than ever with the transfer portal and mental-health pressures and outside challenges. … The coaches who can connect are the ones who are going to be successful.” Sielski: “If Neptune is connecting with his players in that way, it’s not apparent in the Wildcats’ performance on the court, and it hasn’t been apparent, really, since he took over.” (link)

Georgia Tech has sent a poll to students asking for feedback on a potential increase in student athletics fees. The poll asks which program they are enrolled in, if they are in favor of an athletics fee increase from $127 to $152 per semester for full-time in-person students and if they are in favor of an athletics fee increase from $127 to $152 per semester for online students. Ohio Representative Brian Stewart (R-Ashville) during an NIL hearing this week wondered aloud whether Ohio State could get back its vacated wins from 2010. "Reggie Bush has got his Heisman back. Penn State sued the NCAA. They got all of their 111 wins back in just three years, by the way. So if we are going to expand the law here again, to help Ohio State attract new student-athletes, isn't it time for the NCAA to restore those wins and records and for Ohio State to maybe be a little more active in that process?” Buckeyes AD Ross Bjork, who was at the hearing in support of HB 660 – which states public and private universities cannot keep student-athletes from earning NIL money – responded: “That's a new conversation for me being new here. Those rule violations would not be violations in today's model. How does that get recognized? I'm not sure, but moving forward a new governance model based on just resources should be applied and we are working on it." (link)

Oregon State AD Scott Barnes says of Football HC Trent Bray’s first season: “Given what he took on here and the momentum that’s been generated, I like where our future is going.” Barnes noted Bray was faced with a “total, total rebuild,” adding: “Would we all liked to have been in a bowl game, and can we still be? That would have been great. But in the context of a rebuild with a new coach and where we sit, and you think about how invested these players have been, and the fight and resilience that comes from the top…all in all, it’s working out.” Barnes declined to specify how much NIL funding the Beavers need to sustain a competitive football program but noted: “We have a read on what it will take, and that has to do with trends, what we saw this past year, and where we’re headed. We’re not completely there, and we’re out raising money for it. But it’s possible.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner reiterates his position that Thanksgiving Eve is the “greatest untapped terrain available for the conferences and their media partners, with an audience desperate for football and nothing available.” Wilner contends the Big 12 and Pac-12 should fill the vacuum, and Gridiron Founder/President Dave Brown tells him: “It could be the right opportunity for somebody and a way to separate themselves from other conferences. … The only thing going on the night before Thanksgiving is the NBA (and the NHL).” Wilner acknowledges there are obstacles to hosting such games, including the campus environment, the preparation time (namely, teams couldn’t play Saturday-Wednesday) and rest for conference championships. As for the time between games, Brown points out that “this year and next year, there are two byes. In 2026, there’s only one, but they might have Week 0 games green-lighted by then.” Wilner also notes: “In a world where Stanford-Wake Forest, Utah-UCF and USC-Rutgers are conference games, university presidents and athletic directors have proven they will accept any inconvenience for the sake of every last dime. Thanksgiving Eve offers the best, and perhaps only chance to claim new ground on the media landscape. By 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday, the football world is ready. The NFL is dark. The logistics are challenging but surmountable.” (link)

Georgetown Men’s Basketball HC Ed Cooley says he used a “poor choice of words” when talking about Hoyas student-athlete Jayden Epps’ YoY defensive improvement. Cooley said of Epps, who attended Illinois last season: "His development defensively, it's almost like it's a new player. … I'm pretty sure that'll make national news when I say that, but I never said the school it was.” Cooley later explained on social media that “my comment today was said in jest with one of my players, but I admit it was a poor choice of words. I have the utmost respect for the University of Illinois, its men's basketball program, coaches and players." Asked about Cooley’s remarks, Illini HC Brad Underwood said: "That's not even worth a waste of my time on. I don't know what he was referencing that about, and Jayden had a productive freshman year here. But I'm not going to get into all that. I'll let our fans and everybody else have some fun, which I'm sure they probably are." (link)

Notre Dame Assoc. AD/Creative Director Emma Schneider shares how the Fighting Irish created branding for its football matchup against Army at Yankee Stadium last weekend. “The story of the game was the 100 year anniversary of Notre Dame vs. Army at the Polo Grounds in 1924 – right across the river from current Yankee Stadium. That game inspired the famous Four Horsemen article by Grantland Rice, and one of College Football’s most iconic photos. The logo centers on the reimagined four horsemen, dynamically leaping into Yankee Stadium. There are a number of easter eggs in the mark, including the shape of the original Polo Grounds. … In the leadup to the game, we took advantage of the opportunity to highlight four current Notre Dame football players (a new generation of ‘four horsemen’) with graphics inside and out of the Sheraton Hotel Times Square – honoring 1924 but with a modern energy. And last but certainly not least, we got the opportunity to work with the amazing Tracie Ching to illustrate a one-of-a-kind screen-printed game poster of the Four Horsemen. Her incredible work featured throughout the event.” Photos inside. (link)

Dick’s reported net income for the three-month period that ended Nov. 2 of $228M, or $2.75 per share, compared with $201M, or $2.39 per share, a year earlier.
