The NCAA Women’s Volleyball Tournament field is set with Pittsburgh, Nebraska, Penn State & Louisville as the top seeds. Play begins on Friday & culminates with the Final Four in Louisville later this month. Last four in were NC State, San Diego State, UTEP & Washington. First four out were Arizona, Rice, San Diego & Pepperdine. Marquette Executive Assoc. AD for Compliance, Marketing & Sales Danielle Josetti was the selection committee chair: “The first four teams out, they had some great resumes, some great wins, but when compared to the teams that made it in there were some losses in the 100 or 200 range, strength of schedule that was 200 or above or high KPIs. Collectively, those are things that are part of that nitty gritty that kept them out. [...] The most lengthy conversation was about that 4-5 seed. We talked in great detail all three days because you want to get that right. Getting to potentially host two weekends in a row is significant.” Lots more from Josetti. (link, link, link)

Former Texas A&M Football standout Johnny Manziel with Athletes.org co-Founder Jim Cavale on the Now It’s Legal podcast: “Right now what you see around college football is a lot of players having the power to make some changes and having the voices on the platforms that we didn’t necessarily have years ago. Looking back on it, it would have been a situation where higher ups would have suppressed opinions on some things, but look around college football now, players have a lot more say and a lot more power for standing up for what is right. [...] It’ll probably take some time [for players to have a full voice]. You still have ADs & head honchos around college athletics who are running the show like they have been for a long time, so it’s still going to take some time for guys to get comfortable getting together talking and voicing their opinions in the best possible manner they can.” (link)

Temple has hired Sam Houston State Football HC K.C. Keeler for the same role in Philadelphia. Owls AD Arthur Johnson: “Coach Keeler has a track record of evaluating, recruiting, and developing student-athletes into championship-level young men. His leadership, experience, and the culture he establishes within programs are exactly what Temple football needs as we look to return to prominence in the competitive college football landscape.” Looks like Keeler’s buyout is $1.3M. Kennesaw State turns to Jacksonville Jaguars running backs coach & former North Carolina Central HC Jerry Mack to lead its football program. Kennesaw AD Milton Overton: “Coach Mack's values and professional qualifications align with the strategic direction of our football program. He has 20 years of coaching experience at all levels, has shown a longstanding ability to connect with players, and owns a relentless recruiting mindset. Coach Mack has proven experience running up-tempo and productive offensive schemes.” (link)

“Our full focus right now is on the College Football Playoff and making a strong run. We have a ton to play for. We have a great team made up of talented players and great young men. Coach Day does a great job leading our program. He's our coach. … There's a ton of stability across the board within the program. We're always in the top five under his leadership. We're right there. We have great fan support, great donor support. There's going to be plenty of time to dissect what happened in the rivalry game the last couple years. But right now, we have to keep the main thing the main thing, and that's focus on the values of the program, focus on why we lead the young men, focus on the mission and the playoff.” That’s Ohio State AD Ross Bjork in his support of football HC Ryan Day. (link)

Arizona AD Desireé Reed-Francois says Football HC Brent Brennan will return despite an “disappointing and unacceptable” first season at the helm. “Coach Brennan deserves a fair chance to be successful. So, yes, he is coming back next year. Our fans are not happy with how the season went, and neither are we. That goes for our student-athletes. That goes for Coach Brennan and his staff and everyone that is a part of this football program. Our standard is to build teams that consistently compete for championships. We didn't meet the standard. But I am proud of the fact that our student-athletes stayed together, and that bodes well for the future. Ultimately, we are judged by wins and losses. There are no moral victories, and we are going to get this right by providing the necessary support for Coach Brennan and the program.” (link)

Louisiana Tech AD Ryan Ivey also voices support for his football boss. “After careful consideration, we are looking forward to Sonny Cumbie‘s return as our head football coach for the 2025 season. Our Bulldogs made progress during the season, our defense ranks in the top 3 in the conference in every major defensive statistical category and top 15 nationally in total defense, eight games were determined by a single score, and we saw a group of student-athletes who never quit and showed us the meaning of grit, resiliency and perseverance.” Ivey does note that there will be a review of “several programmatic operations.” (link)

BYU recently claimed both the men’s and women’s cross country titles and Men’s HC Ed Eyestone and Women’s HC Diljeet Taylor used at least one similar tactic on that mid-to-high 30 degree morning in Verona, Wisconsin… olive oil. Taylor: “We’ve done it every year if it’s cold. It’s a trick. You don’t see a lot of people doing it.” Eyestone: “I used it as an athlete many times. I won the N.C.A.A title 40 years ago wearing some brown gardening gloves and bare arms and shorts. That was a much worse day. I used olive oil. I would guess we were the only ones using it.” BYU coaches applied the oil to the runners’ legs, backs and arms five minutes before the start, just as the sweats were coming off. Taylor notes that it insulates your skin, thus protecting your body from losing heat and offers wind protection. (link)

The Big Ten has determined that actions of both Michigan and Ohio State football teams following their matchup on Saturday violated the league’s sportsmanship policy and has fined each program $100K. (link)

In the wake of Disney’s expanded Monday Night Football simulcasts, NFL Chief Media Officer Brian Rolapp says there is an open door at the league for all ideas to increase the distribution of games. “It should be no mystery to anybody or our partners that we're looking for ideas on reach. And Disney really leaned in on this one, and we say that to all our partners: If you've got the ideas, let's do 'em. Let's look at it. And they've been great partners in that regard.” Rolapp’s remarks came at the SBJ Media Innovators conference, where he also explained the league is “not worried” about Netflix’s ability to handle large concurrent viewership. “We've worked a ton with Netflix getting ready for this. I think there's a reason they did the [Mike Tyson-Jake Paul] fight when they did the fight.” Additionally, Rolapp says conversations around selling off part of NFL Media have picked up recently but did not comment on reports that doing so could come in concert with the Paramount-Skydance merger. “We've probably had more conversations in the last two months than we've had in the last 10 [months]. So I think we will continue to be patient and when we see it, we'll know it.” (link)

Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek on reports that have connected him to the AD opening at South Carolina: “I have no intention of going to South Carolina, that’s all social media speculation I believe due to my ties to that area from my time at Coastal Carolina and growing up in Charlotte.” (link); GamecockCentral’s Chris Clark also points to Georgia Tech AD J Batt as in the mix at South Carolina. Clark adds: “Nobody has an offer at this point from the administration.” (link); For those who are interested in leading the Gamecocks, the D1.dossier for the position is available. (link)

Yesterday’s football season finale weekend was marred by a number of fights to the point of pepper spray being used to calm the situation after Michigan’s win over Ohio State. The Athletic staff breaks down all the disagreements including those between Alabama & Auburn, BYU & Houston, NC State & North Carolina, Florida & Florida State, as well as Arizona & Arizona State. Here’s guessing planting flags at midfield will be forbidden - or carry a heavy fine - before we kick next season. (link)
|
Speaking of fines, Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard believes the Cyclones will avoid one from the Big 12 despite their fans rushing the field after last night’s victory over Kansas State: “We don’t get fined in the Big 12 for fans rushing the field. You get fined if you don’t have a protocol and a plan and I stayed up in the press box to watch from up high. We followed our protocol, we followed our plan. We got K-State off the field, so I don’t anticipate we will be fined. But, it was awesome to see our fans celebrating like they did.” (link)

Former Colorado State AD Jack Graham gives “all the credit in the worth” to his successor, current Iowa Deputy AD for Strategic Initiatives & COO Joe Parker, for the hire of Football HC Jay Norvell in Fort Collins after the Rams completed an 8-4 (6-1) season. Graham also added: “Jay needs two things. He needs money and he needs talent. For him to get that talent, he’s got to have money. At the end of the day, his job is to find ways to pay for players — that’s what college football has become. If you’re going to compete at the Power 4 conference level, you’ve got to have a pool of roughly $3.5 million (in NIL money), and to legitimately compete, you’ve got to be at $5 million. You don’t have to be at $20 million. You can attract a lot of talent with less money than that … but without it, CSU football is never going to compete at a Power 4 level. It’s just that simple.” (link)

North Dakota Football HC Bubba Schweigert will step down after 11 seasons at the helm and transition to Senior Assoc. AD for Engagement and Mentorship. Per the release: “In his new role, Schweigert will focus on fostering strong relationships with student-athletes, staff, alumni, and the community. He will also work closely with various departments within the university to develop and implement programs that support the growth of student-athletes, coaches and staff.” (link)

North Carolina Board of Trustees Chair John Preyer comments on the handling of Football HC Mack Brown’s exit while Tar Heels AD Bubba Cunningham was in Hawaii for the Maui Invitational: “I have no doubt Coach Brown would have done whatever the university would have wanted him to do at the end of the season. And for some reason, that I do not understand, the athletic director would not allow that to happen and instead fired him from halfway around the world. And I think that is shameful. [...] I was angry and I thought that is not how you treat a Hall of Fame coach that is the winningest coach at Carolina. And you damn sure don’t do it from halfway around the world.” (link)

A slew of bonuses, as detailed by USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz: Arizona State HC Kenny Dillingham had the biggest pay day, hauling in $695K ($300K for 10 regular season wins and $395K for a spot in the Big 12 Championship game); With a 12-0 record, Oregon’s Dan Lanning picks up $200K bonus and is assured at least $150K more for the Ducks’ likely College Football Playoff berth. That brings Lanning’s total to $650K on the season, plus an automatic one-year contract extension worth $9.4M, all guaranteed.; For the Cyclones spot in the Big 12 Championship game, Iowa State HC Matt Campbell picks up $250K and another $250K for a 10th win on the season.; Indiana’s Curt Cignetti gets $250K for the Hoosiers tied-for-second-place finish in the Big Ten.; Texas HC Steve Sarkisian adds $150K to his pot for making the SEC Championship game.; So, too, does Coastal Carolina’s Tim Beck for a sixth win.; Western Kentucky’s Tyson Helton gets $100K ($50K for CUSA title game spot and another $50K for guaranteed winning season).; Texas Tech’s Joey McGuire is also in the $100K club for the Red Raiders reaching eight wins.; Louisiana HC Michael Desormeaux picks up automatic one-year contract extension with Ragin Cajuns reaching 10 wins. The added year takes him through 2027 and pays at least $772,800 with just over $430K guaranteed.; Also of note, Penn State “said coach James Franklin's bonus package was revised on Friday to address 12-team CFP and made no details available. Under prior setup, Franklin was due $250,000 bonus for team playing in B1G title game.” (link)

Big West Asst. Commissioner for Compliance & Student-Athlete Engagement Angie Allen sits down with Connect's Steph Garcia Cichosz to share insight into her recent move from the Missouri Valley Conference to the Big West. Allen describes her preparation for the application and interview process, her strategies for bridging the gap between paper resume and in-person interview, and how she's acclimated to the culture of a new organization. Allen also dives into her trajectory in college athletics, which started as the daughter of a DI football coach before she became a student-athlete who discovered that administration was her calling. In preparing to interview for her current role, Allen explains she reached out to her network to gain any insights she could about working at the Big West and for Commissioner Dan Butterly. She also explains it was important to understand going in whether she would be a good culture fit. Also important was “making sure what I’m bringing to the table is what the Big West needs and wants and then making sure that I can excel on whatever those promises are.” Once she arrived at the Big West office, Allen says she reached out to people individually to learn more about their roles and how she could best help them. “So just being honest and transparent with whatever those conversations looked like, but also making sure I offer a helping hand. ‘Let me know if I can ever help you in any of these things.’ Just to be able to build a relationship and make sure there's open lines of communication so when we're not in the office as much, people still feel like my virtual door is open.” Check out the full Q&A on Connect. JohnWallStreet examines the opportunities and challenges associated with the convergence of the primary and secondary ticket markets, and one BI exec tells him that MLB teams recognize that “fans are agnostic to where they get their tickets and have started making pricing decisions for both the primary market, which they obviously control in full, and large portions of the secondary market, which is a mix of the organization and other sellers.” JWS subsequently notes: “While the blending of ticketing markets is enabling teams to maximize gate receipts, it is also contributing to a potentially troublesome trend across sports: loyal fans are getting priced out.” While there is “nothing inherently wrong with dynamic pricing,” JWS explains the “conversation begins to become more complicated once the postseason rolls around and if/when those same organizations use the functionality to gouge their most passionate fans on playoff tickets – as the record setting [MLB] teams did.” The BI exec: “Because at the end of the day, that's all this really is. You're in the postseason, can the organization maximize profitability amongst an emotionally irrational customer base? It’s not all that different from charging people $50 for a pack of hand sanitizer during a pandemic.” One potential solution, according to JWS, is for sports properties to offer more pre-sales (think: fan must attend X number of games during the regular season to purchase postseason tickets) and make seats acquired via that process non-transferable. They won’t make as much money in the short-term. But the strategic pivot will help to ensure their most loyal fans remain under the tent for the long-haul.” More. (link)
