ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips weighs in on the College Football Playoff Selection Committee’s handling of conference championship games: “If, after tomorrow night, if you’re inside of that top 12 or so and you’re projected to be in [the bracket], it would be very alarming to be moved out because you played an extra game while everyone else is sitting home. So, I take [CFP officials] at face value. … It’s not only for the ACC. It’s for the other conferences – you cannot and should not be penalized for having to play a 13th game after a very long season. So, we’ll see how that plays out, but I’m very confident that the committee is going to stand by what they’ve told us.” (link)

After several postgame dustups of varying degrees over the weekend, several college football stakeholders are calling for uniform policies to stop flag-planting. ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, for example, says: “We have to collectively come together. We can do things independently as conferences, but we need to all come together, and our approach must be aggressive. This is unacceptable.” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey adds: “There shouldn’t be flag-planting. Go win the game and go to the locker room. “If you want to plant a flag, you play ‘capture the flag’ or you join the military or you fly to the moon.” Former Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield, one of the sport’s most notorious flag-planters, is against any regulation to ban the practice and said after leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday: “Let the boys play. I’ll say this: OU-Texas does it every time they play. It’s not anything special. You take your ‘L’ and you move on. I’ll leave it at that.” More. (link)

Meanwhile, the ACC has issued fines and public reprimands to North Carolina and NC State for the actions of both teams following Saturday’s matchup. The league has also issued fines and public reprimands to Virginia and Virginia Tech for a pregame altercation between student-athletes of both programs. From the league: “The unsportsmanlike behavior that was displayed is unacceptable and tarnishes the passionate on-field play between these institutions.” (link)

The Rose Bowl and Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation have unveiled a capital campaign to support a roughly $80M renovation to prepare the 102-year-old stadium for the 2028 Olympics and UCLA’s future in the Big Ten. The Rose Bowl has roughly $35M of the project already covered, according to SBJ’s Bret McCormick, who adds: “While some of the Gensler-designed work has already been completed, including the creation of a new eight-row UCLA student section behind the opposing team’s bench, major portions remain. Those include a south end zone field level premium club -- the first field-level premium at the historic stadium -- and eventually a complete redo of the east and west seating stands that would take 27-inch seating treads up to between 31 and 33 inches, reducing capacity from roughly 89,000 down to approximately 72,000.” (link)

CBS’ Matt Norlander takes a look at the future of the Maui Invitational as the industry continues to change and Lahaina continues to rebuild from the devastating wildfires of 2023. KemperSports EVP/Managing Director Tom Valdiserri tells Norlander the sentiment among locals was clear: even though the area was still healing, they wanted the tournament back. "It tells the world Maui is open and alive and ready. The mayor's been phenomenal. The state has been phenomenal. … Hotel properties have been operating roughly 50% through the year. We're here now, they're about 90% and we're in the shoulder season…what that really means is people are getting back to work earlier than they normally would, because we're here. They need more restaurants, need more servers and bartenders, and hotels need more house cleaners and all that kind of stuff.” Meanwhile, Norlander notes there’s a chance this year’s field “is the last great Maui bracket ever. There is a catch to the glamour and prestige of a Maui invite: Schools lose a lot of money for the opportunity to play on a huge stage in a small gym. Sources that played both in this year's tournament and have played in previous versions all said the price is easily north of $400K, with some schools putting the cost well above $450K when taking charter flights into account.” MTEs with an NIL-focused model like the Players Era could instead become the norm, but Valdiserri is skeptical of the Players Era model. “I have a really strong idea of the two sponsors who are on the floor and what they paid. And right now, we have a good idea, based on the pricing of their tickets and the fans that we're seeing…and so I don't see it. I don't see $8M. … Nobody can predict the future. I get where some things are heading. I also see some events that pop up really quickly, and then they realize, holy cow, that's just not working. And you know, we're in it for the long haul." Lots more. (link)

The BPS Foundation, the nonprofit partner organization to NIL collective operator Blueprint Sports, has written to supporters of at least one of its collective partners that it will close by year’s end, according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit, who reports that in a “special message to our unique donors,” Andrew Beisel, executive director of BPS Foundation, wrote that its decision to dissolve was due to the “unpredictable and ever-increasing risks associated with NIL nonprofit operations.” Beisel revealed that the foundation has received letters of inquiry from the federal government, in addition to notices from multiple state attorneys general, and that the organization’s legal counsel had determined there was “no path forward” for it to continue. BPS Foundation’s remaining funds will be transferred to the partner-school’s athletic department and any donations made after November 30 would be returned. Also from Libit: “Beisel noted that nonprofit NIL organizations for Alabama (Walk of Champions) and Notre Dame (FUND), had recently announced their plans to shutter, a ‘warning sign we simply cannot ignore.’ In an email Sunday night, Beisel declined to comment about the memo or his organization’s future.” (link)

Connecticut women’s basketball student-athlete Paige Bueckers is Nike’s first NIL athlete to design and launch a Nike Player Edition basketball sneaker. Bueckers’ Nike G.T. Hustle 3 will drop December 7, featuring her favorite colors – baby blue and lavender purple – as a way to celebrate her final season of college basketball at UConn, and she says: “There are so many details that make this shoe special to me. This is the perfect colorway for me: I love baby blue and lavender, and the Radial Knit makes me feel fly. My favorite detail is the message from my dad, and the tribute to both of my homes is so meaningful for my first Player Edition model.” (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy explores Allstate’s continued investment in college sports as well as its focus on expanding beyond football and notes that one “lingering carrot” involves whether the company has any interest in participating in league naming rights. Asked about a potential partnership with the Big 12, Allstate EVP/Chief Marketing, Customer and Communications Officer Elizabeth Brady tells Portnoy: “We certainly do not want to comment on any rumors that are flying around. Rumors are rumors. What we’ve been focusing on is just making sure that we can touch all programs, touch all athletes, and focus on our strategy.” While the company declined to provide specific investment levels and KPIs in college sports to Portnoy, he notes that “an SBJ analysis of iSpot.tv data showed Allstate spent less on advertising during national linear TV sports programming over the past year ($220.4M) than State Farm ($335M), Progressive ($379M) and Geico ($485.6M). However, 26% of Allstate’s overall TV sports spend was dedicated to college programming — almost double that of the next closest competitor (Geico).” Portnoy goes on to point out that “Brady alluded to the company reevaluating where to invest its marketing dollars in recent years, be it professional leagues, college sports or otherwise. That discussion continuously circled back to the collegiate space — and a desire to emphasize non-revenue sports.” Brady explains further: “There’s a lot of things flying around right now, and obviously, it’s important for us to make sure that we’re partnering across all schools, all conferences, to support the collective total of college athletes. We feel like that’s a role we can play as a big brand. We can help support the schools and help them achieve what they need to achieve to keep these programs going.” (link)

Sticking to the theme, NACDA agrees to a multiyear partnership with Allstate to “increase and enhance the community impact of collegiate student-athletes from all sports and levels of competition.” As part of the agreement, Allstate will be the presenting partner of the newly created Allstate NACDA Good Works Team, which honors student-athletes who demonstrate levels of volunteerism and civic engagement that are above and beyond their success and achievements in the classroom and competition. Ohio State AD/NACDA President Ross Bjork: “NACDA's new partnership with Allstate and the creation of the Good Works Team provides another avenue for our Association to highlight the inspiring and impressive things that are happening in college athletics during a time of transition in our industry. Student-athletes on campuses of all sizes across the country are making a difference in their communities and it is important that their stories are told on a national stage.” (link)

The NCAA Women’s Volleyball Tournament field is set with Pittsburgh, Nebraska, Penn State & Louisville as the top seeds. Play begins on Friday & culminates with the Final Four in Louisville later this month. Last four in were NC State, San Diego State, UTEP & Washington. First four out were Arizona, Rice, San Diego & Pepperdine. Marquette Executive Assoc. AD for Compliance, Marketing & Sales Danielle Josetti was the selection committee chair: “The first four teams out, they had some great resumes, some great wins, but when compared to the teams that made it in there were some losses in the 100 or 200 range, strength of schedule that was 200 or above or high KPIs. Collectively, those are things that are part of that nitty gritty that kept them out. [...] The most lengthy conversation was about that 4-5 seed. We talked in great detail all three days because you want to get that right. Getting to potentially host two weekends in a row is significant.” Lots more from Josetti. (link, link, link)

Former Texas A&M Football standout Johnny Manziel with Athletes.org co-Founder Jim Cavale on the Now It’s Legal podcast: “Right now what you see around college football is a lot of players having the power to make some changes and having the voices on the platforms that we didn’t necessarily have years ago. Looking back on it, it would have been a situation where higher ups would have suppressed opinions on some things, but look around college football now, players have a lot more say and a lot more power for standing up for what is right. [...] It’ll probably take some time [for players to have a full voice]. You still have ADs & head honchos around college athletics who are running the show like they have been for a long time, so it’s still going to take some time for guys to get comfortable getting together talking and voicing their opinions in the best possible manner they can.” (link)

Temple has hired Sam Houston State Football HC K.C. Keeler for the same role in Philadelphia. Owls AD Arthur Johnson: “Coach Keeler has a track record of evaluating, recruiting, and developing student-athletes into championship-level young men. His leadership, experience, and the culture he establishes within programs are exactly what Temple football needs as we look to return to prominence in the competitive college football landscape.” Looks like Keeler’s buyout is $1.3M. (link, link)

Kennesaw State turns to Jacksonville Jaguars running backs coach & former North Carolina Central HC Jerry Mack to lead its football program. Kennesaw AD Milton Overton: “Coach Mack's values and professional qualifications align with the strategic direction of our football program. He has 20 years of coaching experience at all levels, has shown a longstanding ability to connect with players, and owns a relentless recruiting mindset. Coach Mack has proven experience running up-tempo and productive offensive schemes.” (link)

“Our full focus right now is on the College Football Playoff and making a strong run. We have a ton to play for. We have a great team made up of talented players and great young men. Coach Day does a great job leading our program. He's our coach. … There's a ton of stability across the board within the program. We're always in the top five under his leadership. We're right there. We have great fan support, great donor support. There's going to be plenty of time to dissect what happened in the rivalry game the last couple years. But right now, we have to keep the main thing the main thing, and that's focus on the values of the program, focus on why we lead the young men, focus on the mission and the playoff.” That’s Ohio State AD Ross Bjork in his support of football HC Ryan Day. (link)
|
Arizona AD Desireé Reed-Francois says Football HC Brent Brennan will return despite an “disappointing and unacceptable” first season at the helm. “Coach Brennan deserves a fair chance to be successful. So, yes, he is coming back next year. Our fans are not happy with how the season went, and neither are we. That goes for our student-athletes. That goes for Coach Brennan and his staff and everyone that is a part of this football program. Our standard is to build teams that consistently compete for championships. We didn't meet the standard. But I am proud of the fact that our student-athletes stayed together, and that bodes well for the future. Ultimately, we are judged by wins and losses. There are no moral victories, and we are going to get this right by providing the necessary support for Coach Brennan and the program.” (link)
|
Louisiana Tech AD Ryan Ivey also voices support for his football boss. “After careful consideration, we are looking forward to Sonny Cumbie‘s return as our head football coach for the 2025 season. Our Bulldogs made progress during the season, our defense ranks in the top 3 in the conference in every major defensive statistical category and top 15 nationally in total defense, eight games were determined by a single score, and we saw a group of student-athletes who never quit and showed us the meaning of grit, resiliency and perseverance.” Ivey does note that there will be a review of “several programmatic operations.” (link)

BYU recently claimed both the men’s and women’s cross country titles and Men’s HC Ed Eyestone and Women’s HC Diljeet Taylor used at least one similar tactic on that mid-to-high 30 degree morning in Verona, Wisconsin… olive oil. Taylor: “We’ve done it every year if it’s cold. It’s a trick. You don’t see a lot of people doing it.” Eyestone: “I used it as an athlete many times. I won the N.C.A.A title 40 years ago wearing some brown gardening gloves and bare arms and shorts. That was a much worse day. I used olive oil. I would guess we were the only ones using it.” BYU coaches applied the oil to the runners’ legs, backs and arms five minutes before the start, just as the sweats were coming off. Taylor notes that it insulates your skin, thus protecting your body from losing heat and offers wind protection. (link)

The Big Ten has determined that actions of both Michigan and Ohio State football teams following their matchup on Saturday violated the league’s sportsmanship policy and has fined each program $100K. (link)

In the wake of Disney’s expanded Monday Night Football simulcasts, NFL Chief Media Officer Brian Rolapp says there is an open door at the league for all ideas to increase the distribution of games. “It should be no mystery to anybody or our partners that we're looking for ideas on reach. And Disney really leaned in on this one, and we say that to all our partners: If you've got the ideas, let's do 'em. Let's look at it. And they've been great partners in that regard.” Rolapp’s remarks came at the SBJ Media Innovators conference, where he also explained the league is “not worried” about Netflix’s ability to handle large concurrent viewership. “We've worked a ton with Netflix getting ready for this. I think there's a reason they did the [Mike Tyson-Jake Paul] fight when they did the fight.” Additionally, Rolapp says conversations around selling off part of NFL Media have picked up recently but did not comment on reports that doing so could come in concert with the Paramount-Skydance merger. “We've probably had more conversations in the last two months than we've had in the last 10 [months]. So I think we will continue to be patient and when we see it, we'll know it.” (link)
