Alabama AD Greg Byrne took to X to point out the Crimson Tide are No. 2 in the country in opponents’ winning percentage, No. 4 in ESPN’s FPI, No. 4 in ESPN’s Efficiency Ratings, No. 10 in Strength of Record, No. 17 in Strength of Schedule and have three wins against teams currently ranked in the College Football Playoff Top 25. He adds: “Recognize there’s lots of chatter out there about [two- vs. three-loss] teams; however, that is just one factor. When you look at the [College Football Playoff] Principles for its Selection Committee, the first bullet point on the list of considerations is strength of schedule. Not all schedules and conferences are created equal. We’ve worked diligently to add more challenging non-conference home-and-homes, which is good for college football, not to mention the week-in and week-out of the SEC and it being the toughest in the country.” (link)

UIC AD Andrea Williams talks about how her career stops at places like the Utah Jazz, Big Ten and the College Football Playoff have prepared her for her new role leading the Flames: “I tell people all the time I've had a very charmed career and I've been a part of a lot of blue chip brands if you will. I've had a lot of great people in my life that really said allow people to spread their wings. Allow people the space to be creative, to be their authentic selves and be more of a guide, be more of a sounding board and you don't have to lead with an iron fist. Trust your people to work hard, to do the job that you set them up to do and give them the resources to be successful. So I really am hands-off because I want to be a great leader and provide vision, mission, expectations and goals but then let our team, let our coaches, let our athletes go out there and do the work they signed up to do.” Williams also emphasizes the need to be flexible as the industry continues to change. “I think I’m excited mostly around the NIL space because this gives more opportunity than ever to our student-athletes to be able to leverage their name, image and likeness and they should have that opportunity.” (link)

The American announces USAA as the presenting partner of the conference’s football championship game. Commissioner Tim Pernetti: “USAA’s mission, people and standing as a national leader are consistent with our DNA as a conference. USAA is a broadly recognized brand in the financial services sector and fits perfectly with the national platform that our championship game provides. Their steadfast support of military members and their families truly aligns with the mission and values of our conference membership. This is just the start of a partnership with limitless potential.” (link)

North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham says he’d like to have a new Football HC in place “within a week. That would certainly be my expectation, we get it done by this time next week, we should be done. But that could slide forwards or backwards, but that would be my hope." Cunningham explains there is currently an advisory group “that’s helping us kind of sift through candidates,” adding: “We've had a tremendous response of people across the country, of agents calling us, coaches, people calling on behalf of other people that are in the industry. A number of different search firms are wanting to be engaged. … But all the coaches we're talking to right now are playing, and so they're continuing to be in championship games or in the playoffs. So it'll probably take a week or so. I always like to do these things in about 24 to 48 hours, but just can't do that right now, given where we are in the season.” Once the list is narrowed to 10 or 12, Cunningham explains: “We’ll do Zoom interviews, then we'll do in-person interviews, and then we'll make a selection, so it allows us to interview some more people more quickly, and then narrow it down. Coaches will not talk to a committee of 12. But you want 10 or 12 people, because there's a lot of stakeholders at a university that should have input to the direction that you're headed. So we have 10 or 12 that will be the advisors, get us to narrow down to a group (of candidates) that we can interview by Zoom. That'll be a smaller group, and then an even smaller group will go on the road and actually meet with certain folks individually." As for what he’s looking for in candidates, Cunningham notes fit is important and adds: “My preference has always been [to] hire somebody that's done it, hire a head coach, either sitting head coach, or somebody that has done it. And then I think the last three or four hires I've made, I didn't do that. So I recognize that's where I start, but I don't always end up there.” More. (link, link)

Purdue AD Mike Bobinski on the timeline for hiring a new Football HC: "Our goal is moving forward in the most effective, efficient and expeditious way possible, to restore Purdue football to the level of success that we all expect, aspire to, and know that we're capable of. We want to make sure that we're deliberate and we identify and focus on the very best candidate going forward. My guess is that that would take a week, 10 days, something like that.” Bobinski on how NIL has impacted and will continue to impact the program: "The last two years, actually, last two and a half to three years with the NIL world, the way it evolved, was very different, and honestly, that world did not advantage Purdue. That was a challenge for us for a variety of reasons. Our folks don't necessarily respond warmly to the way NIL has evolved in the recent past, but that's going to change as we move forward, and I think that will bring the world back to us in a very positive way. There will be a very well-resourced position who will participate fully in the revenue share situation. That is a commitment that Purdue has made, and we intend to provide our coaches, obviously we're talking about football today, with a very much a level playing field, with people that they're competing against from a revenue share perspective. So that will be very positive.” (link, link)

D1Baseball’s Joe Healy examines how Oregon State built its 2025 baseball schedule as an independent, and Beavers HC Mitch Canham explains: “At first it’s like, well, okay, here’s some options on conferences, and I said ‘To be honest with you, I’d rather go this route right now’ because it’s different and it’s difficult, but at the same time, the opportunity of what Oregon State stands for—being blue collar, hard working—I think if anyone can navigate that space, I bet on us.” After agreeing to opening-season tournaments in Arizona and Texas, OSU’s real test was how it would build out its slate once conference seasons began. Healy explains the “schedule-building process wasn’t without speed bumps. Some coaches were reluctant to play a tough series in their conference bye week, while others are in strong enough conferences that they didn’t see the need to add the Beavers to their slate to bolster a potential postseason resume. But generally speaking, Canham was impressed by the number of coaches who went out of their way to offer assistance, whether it was coaches who were willing to give him an early peek at their conference’s schedule so he could figure out where every team’s bye weeks landed or offering to bring OSU into the fold for weekends that were already scheduled. Canham: “There were a handful of schools that said, ‘Hey, if you can’t find anything, jump in with us and the other opponent’ in certain weeks, and I found, especially here on the West Coast, there was a handful of folks that really take care of one another and want to see baseball continue to do the right thing.” As far as keeping the roster together amid the uncertainty, Canham says he “pulled everybody up [during the season] and said, ‘Hey, here’s the schedule as we have it right now, I know that we’re in the middle of the season and at the end of the season there’s a draft and the portal and all this other stuff, but you’re always going to get a very transparent conversation from us, and if you guys want to leave based on the games that we’re playing or whatever, then that’s your decision, but I’m going to give you the information now.’ He adds: “I’d rather give them the truth as I know it, and then we can talk about it together.” More. Pittsburgh Men’s Basketball HC Jeff Capel joins the Field of 68 podcast to discuss roster construction, physical and mental health issues, being on the hot seat and how his outlook has changed over the last few years. Capel opens up about his dismissal from Oklahoma and says: “I didn't want that to be kind of like my last thing as a head coach. I got fired, which was one of my biggest fears when I got the job at VCU at 27. And I got fired under some controversy about an NCAA allegation. It’s 2024 now, so it's been 14 years I’ll tell you now because the statute of limitations are gone and I don't even know that crap even matters anymore, but I didn’t know anything about it. Even when I was there, when that was going on, I was trying to figure out – for me, like my reputation, my name is on the line and so when I got this job I really wanted to have success just to show myself I could still do it.” Capel also reveals he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, which graduated into Crohn’s disease, and suffered a serious health scare in 2012. “I almost died. It was touch-and-go. They had to revive me from what I’ve been told.” At the end of his fourth season at Pitt, Capel recalls hearing the boos and “Fire Capel” chants from fans “ and I remember that season before games I would be back in my little section and I was just having these bad stomach cramps. I would be dry-heaving.” After that season, Capel began seeing a therapist and has since adopted the mindset of doing the best he can and making peace with where the chips fall. “I know we prepare. I don’t cheat the game. I don't cheat our program. I don't cheat our guys. I'm done, Jeff, with worrying about what other people think. I made a conscious effort at the beginning of Year Five – and I remember people got mad at me, maybe you did – I'm not going to do any media stuff that I don't have to do because I want to focus on my team.” Lots more. ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips weighs in on the College Football Playoff Selection Committee’s handling of conference championship games: “If, after tomorrow night, if you’re inside of that top 12 or so and you’re projected to be in [the bracket], it would be very alarming to be moved out because you played an extra game while everyone else is sitting home. So, I take [CFP officials] at face value. … It’s not only for the ACC. It’s for the other conferences – you cannot and should not be penalized for having to play a 13th game after a very long season. So, we’ll see how that plays out, but I’m very confident that the committee is going to stand by what they’ve told us.” (link)

After several postgame dustups of varying degrees over the weekend, several college football stakeholders are calling for uniform policies to stop flag-planting. ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, for example, says: “We have to collectively come together. We can do things independently as conferences, but we need to all come together, and our approach must be aggressive. This is unacceptable.” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey adds: “There shouldn’t be flag-planting. Go win the game and go to the locker room. “If you want to plant a flag, you play ‘capture the flag’ or you join the military or you fly to the moon.” Former Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield, one of the sport’s most notorious flag-planters, is against any regulation to ban the practice and said after leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday: “Let the boys play. I’ll say this: OU-Texas does it every time they play. It’s not anything special. You take your ‘L’ and you move on. I’ll leave it at that.” More. (link)

Meanwhile, the ACC has issued fines and public reprimands to North Carolina and NC State for the actions of both teams following Saturday’s matchup. The league has also issued fines and public reprimands to Virginia and Virginia Tech for a pregame altercation between student-athletes of both programs. From the league: “The unsportsmanlike behavior that was displayed is unacceptable and tarnishes the passionate on-field play between these institutions.” (link)

The Rose Bowl and Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation have unveiled a capital campaign to support a roughly $80M renovation to prepare the 102-year-old stadium for the 2028 Olympics and UCLA’s future in the Big Ten. The Rose Bowl has roughly $35M of the project already covered, according to SBJ’s Bret McCormick, who adds: “While some of the Gensler-designed work has already been completed, including the creation of a new eight-row UCLA student section behind the opposing team’s bench, major portions remain. Those include a south end zone field level premium club -- the first field-level premium at the historic stadium -- and eventually a complete redo of the east and west seating stands that would take 27-inch seating treads up to between 31 and 33 inches, reducing capacity from roughly 89,000 down to approximately 72,000.” (link)

CBS’ Matt Norlander takes a look at the future of the Maui Invitational as the industry continues to change and Lahaina continues to rebuild from the devastating wildfires of 2023. KemperSports EVP/Managing Director Tom Valdiserri tells Norlander the sentiment among locals was clear: even though the area was still healing, they wanted the tournament back. "It tells the world Maui is open and alive and ready. The mayor's been phenomenal. The state has been phenomenal. … Hotel properties have been operating roughly 50% through the year. We're here now, they're about 90% and we're in the shoulder season…what that really means is people are getting back to work earlier than they normally would, because we're here. They need more restaurants, need more servers and bartenders, and hotels need more house cleaners and all that kind of stuff.” Meanwhile, Norlander notes there’s a chance this year’s field “is the last great Maui bracket ever. There is a catch to the glamour and prestige of a Maui invite: Schools lose a lot of money for the opportunity to play on a huge stage in a small gym. Sources that played both in this year's tournament and have played in previous versions all said the price is easily north of $400K, with some schools putting the cost well above $450K when taking charter flights into account.” MTEs with an NIL-focused model like the Players Era could instead become the norm, but Valdiserri is skeptical of the Players Era model. “I have a really strong idea of the two sponsors who are on the floor and what they paid. And right now, we have a good idea, based on the pricing of their tickets and the fans that we're seeing…and so I don't see it. I don't see $8M. … Nobody can predict the future. I get where some things are heading. I also see some events that pop up really quickly, and then they realize, holy cow, that's just not working. And you know, we're in it for the long haul." Lots more. (link)

The BPS Foundation, the nonprofit partner organization to NIL collective operator Blueprint Sports, has written to supporters of at least one of its collective partners that it will close by year’s end, according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit, who reports that in a “special message to our unique donors,” Andrew Beisel, executive director of BPS Foundation, wrote that its decision to dissolve was due to the “unpredictable and ever-increasing risks associated with NIL nonprofit operations.” Beisel revealed that the foundation has received letters of inquiry from the federal government, in addition to notices from multiple state attorneys general, and that the organization’s legal counsel had determined there was “no path forward” for it to continue. BPS Foundation’s remaining funds will be transferred to the partner-school’s athletic department and any donations made after November 30 would be returned. Also from Libit: “Beisel noted that nonprofit NIL organizations for Alabama (Walk of Champions) and Notre Dame (FUND), had recently announced their plans to shutter, a ‘warning sign we simply cannot ignore.’ In an email Sunday night, Beisel declined to comment about the memo or his organization’s future.” (link)

Hustle 3 will drop December 7, featuring her favorite colors – baby blue and lavender purple – as a way to celebrate her final season of college basketball at UConn, and she says: “There are so many details that make this shoe special to me. This is the perfect colorway for me: I love baby blue and lavender, and the Radial Knit makes me feel fly. My favorite detail is the message from my dad, and the tribute to both of my homes is so meaningful for my first Player Edition model.” (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy explores Allstate’s continued investment in college sports as well as its focus on expanding beyond football and notes that one “lingering carrot” involves whether the company has any interest in participating in league naming rights. Asked about a potential partnership with the Big 12, Allstate EVP/Chief Marketing, Customer and Communications Officer Elizabeth Brady tells Portnoy: “We certainly do not want to comment on any rumors that are flying around. Rumors are rumors. What we’ve been focusing on is just making sure that we can touch all programs, touch all athletes, and focus on our strategy.” While the company declined to provide specific investment levels and KPIs in college sports to Portnoy, he notes that “an SBJ analysis of iSpot.tv data showed Allstate spent less on advertising during national linear TV sports programming over the past year ($220.4M) than State Farm ($335M), Progressive ($379M) and Geico ($485.6M). However, 26% of Allstate’s overall TV sports spend was dedicated to college programming — almost double that of the next closest competitor (Geico).” Portnoy goes on to point out that “Brady alluded to the company reevaluating where to invest its marketing dollars in recent years, be it professional leagues, college sports or otherwise. That discussion continuously circled back to the collegiate space — and a desire to emphasize non-revenue sports.” Brady explains further: “There’s a lot of things flying around right now, and obviously, it’s important for us to make sure that we’re partnering across all schools, all conferences, to support the collective total of college athletes. We feel like that’s a role we can play as a big brand. We can help support the schools and help them achieve what they need to achieve to keep these programs going.” (link)

Sticking to the theme, NACDA agrees to a multiyear partnership with Allstate to “increase and enhance the community impact of collegiate student-athletes from all sports and levels of competition.” As part of the agreement, Allstate will be the presenting partner of the newly created Allstate NACDA Good Works Team, which honors student-athletes who demonstrate levels of volunteerism and civic engagement that are above and beyond their success and achievements in the classroom and competition. Ohio State AD/NACDA President Ross Bjork: “NACDA's new partnership with Allstate and the creation of the Good Works Team provides another avenue for our Association to highlight the inspiring and impressive things that are happening in college athletics during a time of transition in our industry. Student-athletes on campuses of all sizes across the country are making a difference in their communities and it is important that their stories are told on a national stage.” (link)
