Miami (FL) AD Dan Radakovich takes to X ahead of tonight’s College Football Playoff rankings reveal and writes: “Sensational [CFP]-worthy season for [the Hurricanes football team] – 10-2 and No. 1 in scoring and total offense; 11th in FPI; 7 wins vs. P4 teams and 3-0 vs. teams in top 30 of strength ranking; 6-2 record vs. bowl-eligible teams – 4-2 on the road; 2 losses by combined 9 points.” (link)

Former AT&T Chairman/Oklahoma alumnus Randall Stephenson will take on an advisory role to help OU with its approach to the House settlement. Sooners AD Joe Castiglione in an email to donors and season ticket holders explains Stephenson “will help guide us into restructuring our budget for this new world of college sports and into developing a football structure with elements similar to professional sports teams. This includes building out a more expansive General Manager function and developing a dynamic model that will allow OU Football to become a national gold-standard around talent acquisition, portal management, and player development. College athletics remains unique, but adaptations that draw upon the professional model are necessary to compete at the highest level. As part of Randall’s work, he also will make recommendations for funding player compensation and offer insights into pioneering governance models and athletics structures that will set up OU Athletics for success far into the future.” Stephenson will not be compensated for his work. Wisconsin plans to keep its scholarship limit at 85 football student-athletes and maintain its walk-on tradition next season, according to Badgers HC Luke Fickell, who says: “I think we’re kind of in that same mold” as the SEC’s approach. “I don’t know that the Big Ten is going to be much different. I know that there’s still some flexibility. By saying 85 [scholarships], you still have a lot of flexibility with the revenue sharing, so it’ll be interesting to see how things work.” By setting aside NIL funds for traditional walk-ons instead of maxing out scholarships, UW can build depth with players who may not contribute right away but could develop into contributors over time, and Fickell sees these walk-ons as crucial to Wisconsin’s identity. He adds: “There’s going to be a lot of flexibility. But I think that the idea of sticking with some hard cap number of scholarships is probably where we’ll be, and it’s a good thing for us because I still think it allows you to have some of those walk-on guys that are the core and crux of your program." Badgernotes’ Dillon Graff adds that this approach “goes beyond just finding diamonds in the rough – it’s about strengthening relationships with Wisconsin’s high school coaches and creating a sense of unity across the state, which you could argue Fickell's staff hasn't excelled at. Building a program with strong local roots could help foster more long-term stability and buy-in, which are invaluable in an era where the transfer portal has made rosters increasingly transient.” (link)

Maryland has received an $18M gift from alumnus & NBA marketing innovator Stephen Schanwald, who is providing $10M to Maryland Athletics in support of the department’s top priorities and $8M to the Robert H. Smith School of Business to endow its Sports Management Program. In recognition of his generosity, the program as well as the XFINITY Center Pavilion and Football Practice Fields at Jones-Hill House will be named in his honor. Additionally, the Stephen M. Schanwald-Russ Potts External Operations Suite in the XFINITY Center will honor Schanwald and his former mentor at UMD. (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown takes a look at the future of non-profit NIL collectives after Sportico’s Daniel Libit reported the BPS Foundation will shutter by the end of the year. Brown notes the recent IRS memo indicating the agency would scrutinize such collectives may largely be rendered moot if collective operations move in-house, at which point the donations may be tax-deductible. “Occasionally, lawmakers of both major parties have raised questions about what revenue should be considered ‘unrelated business taxable income,’ or UBIT, in college athletics. But with Republicans controlling both the House and the Senate next year, and with Republican Donald Trump taking over the presidency in 2025, [James Moore & Co. Partner Katie] Davis told me she doesn’t expect the federal government to seriously take a whack at removing the tax-exempt status of any athletic departments, (although she did note that some future MMR deals that involve both university and athlete IP could trigger an UBIT classification).” Brown adds: “one of the few regulatory bodies slower than the NCAA…is the IRS. And by the time they finally understood what was happening, the business and everything else changed. If those audits finally come, the organizations they investigate may very well have already closed up shop. The whole thing could be moot. Or, at the very least, someone else’s problem.” (link)

The Nashville Sports Council has submitted a bid to host the FCS National Championship games in 2026 and 2027. The council partnered with Vanderbilt and the Ohio Valley Conference in putting together the bid, which included proposing both championship games be played at Vanderbilt's newly renovated FirstBank Stadium. Nashville Sports Council President/CEO Scott Ramsey: "We have our fingers crossed. We're hopeful in the next couple of weeks they will make a decision and hopefully it's Nashville and we can kind of get rolling and start working on it. I believe they want to decide on the next city as soon as possible. … The new renovations at FirstBank will obviously be complete for next year and I think we've got a really good shot at filling it. [The FCS] has been selling out in Frisco with the exception of COVID the last 13 years in a row. The new total capacity at FirstBank will be somewhere in the low 30,000s including the new club seats and south end zone. We think it's the right size to hopefully increase attendance and provide a new destination for those fans." (link)

The inaugural Players Era Festival debuted to rave reviews from coaches and The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman & Samuel Lance, who call the tournament a “superb event.” Creighton HC Greg McDermott agrees, saying: “I’ve been doing this for 36 years and I’d never have expected this is the first year of an event. It was really well done.” Alabama HC Nate Oats adds: “I thought it was pretty damn good. I think it’s the best event out there right now. Everything was great.” Oregon HC Dana Altman’s only issue was the two-day layoff, but he praised the accommodations at the MGM, the food, and the quality of the referees. Normally, Goodman points out, the teams have to pay for travel and food. But everything was taken care of by the Players Era. EverWonder’s Ian Orefice tells Goodman that “we’re going to basically break even this year. And then when all the money is deposited on December 5, the conversations between us and the teams will be fundamentally different.” Next year, former And1 founder Seth Berger says the tentative plan is to have games on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, with somewhere between 16 and 20 teams in the field. The tournament will remain with the MGM Grand Garden Arena and add Michelob Ultra Arena along with a third (possibly T-Mobile Arena). The winning team will get an additional million dollars. Berger: “This isn’t just about one event. We’re trying to make the Players Era the biggest brand so we can play the players even more. We’re looking at down the road having a huge impact in the sport.” Goodman also believes that “this thing could become a premiere MTE event for college basketball.” (link, link)

The 88K-square foot facility features a fully covered 120-yard field with turf that replicates the playing surface at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Athletic’s Grace Raynor catches up with several college football staffers and recruits to discuss the emotional toll flipping one’s commitment has on all involved and notes that according to the 247Sports database, there have been 504 decommitments and counting in the 2025 cycle. One Big Ten staffer tells Raynor: “It’s so interesting because when you flip a kid, it’s super exciting. But when you lose a kid, it’s devastating. You build that relationship and you know their birthdays and you know what’s going on in their life — (if) they have prom coming up or homecoming or whatever it may be, and ‘Oh, he took his girlfriend out on a date’ or ‘It’s his girlfriend’s birthday.’ You invest so much time that when they flip, it’s almost like a breakup. It’s so disheartening.” For Boston College commit Sterling Sanders, playing Power 4 football came with a price. He had committed to Georgia Southern after developing a close relationship with Georgia Southern HC Clay Helton and Director of On-Campus Recruiting Alexis Villareal. He tells Raynor: “I really loved Georgia Southern. Georgia Southern did everything for me. It was very hard to flip. I was like, ‘OK, let me make this big decision. I have to put my big boy pants on.'” Still, most flips come with some warning, particularly when the prospect visits another school after already committing. The Big Ten staffer: “[A recruit will] tell his position coach at the school that he’s committed to, ‘Hey, I just want to take an OV here just to check it out.’ A trip for my mom, Coach. A trip for my mom.’ And then it comes down the line, and that’s where they end up going. Very rare is it a flip that you don’t know about. Flips you don’t know about tend to happen literally within the 24 hours of signing day and someone’s offered more [NIL money].” More. (link)

Tulsa QB Cooper Legas and the family of linebacker Myles Jackson are looking for NIL answers following the departure of Football HC Kevin Wilson. Despite promises, both say they’ve received no money, and Jackson’s mother, Veronica, explains: “We are looking for a resolution. It’s a letdown now that the coach has been let go, no one can give us answers. … They’re just passing the ball. And I think it’s just trying to be thrown under the rug.” Legas adds: “Honestly, we’ve been scraping by with what my wife’s been making. So I came here expecting to have, honestly, a decent amount of extra money and be able to save and be able to go home with a decent sum of money to start out in the real world, but just been living off what my wife’s been making as a receptionist.” TU says in a statement to 2 News Oklahoma that it is unaware of any promises of NIL payments made by the former head football coach to student-athletes completing their eligibility. Wilson, meanwhile, tells 2 News: “We had no money – zero. We couldn’t give money we didn’t have.” (link)

Alabama AD Greg Byrne took to X to point out the Crimson Tide are No. 2 in the country in opponents’ winning percentage, No. 4 in ESPN’s FPI, No. 4 in ESPN’s Efficiency Ratings, No. 10 in Strength of Record, No. 17 in Strength of Schedule and have three wins against teams currently ranked in the College Football Playoff Top 25. He adds: “Recognize there’s lots of chatter out there about [two- vs. three-loss] teams; however, that is just one factor. When you look at the [College Football Playoff] Principles for its Selection Committee, the first bullet point on the list of considerations is strength of schedule. Not all schedules and conferences are created equal. We’ve worked diligently to add more challenging non-conference home-and-homes, which is good for college football, not to mention the week-in and week-out of the SEC and it being the toughest in the country.” (link)

UIC AD Andrea Williams talks about how her career stops at places like the Utah Jazz, Big Ten and the College Football Playoff have prepared her for her new role leading the Flames: “I tell people all the time I've had a very charmed career and I've been a part of a lot of blue chip brands if you will. I've had a lot of great people in my life that really said allow people to spread their wings. Allow people the space to be creative, to be their authentic selves and be more of a guide, be more of a sounding board and you don't have to lead with an iron fist. Trust your people to work hard, to do the job that you set them up to do and give them the resources to be successful. So I really am hands-off because I want to be a great leader and provide vision, mission, expectations and goals but then let our team, let our coaches, let our athletes go out there and do the work they signed up to do.” Williams also emphasizes the need to be flexible as the industry continues to change. “I think I’m excited mostly around the NIL space because this gives more opportunity than ever to our student-athletes to be able to leverage their name, image and likeness and they should have that opportunity.” (link)

The American announces USAA as the presenting partner of the conference’s football championship game. Commissioner Tim Pernetti: “USAA’s mission, people and standing as a national leader are consistent with our DNA as a conference. USAA is a broadly recognized brand in the financial services sector and fits perfectly with the national platform that our championship game provides. Their steadfast support of military members and their families truly aligns with the mission and values of our conference membership. This is just the start of a partnership with limitless potential.” (link)

North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham says he’d like to have a new Football HC in place “within a week. That would certainly be my expectation, we get it done by this time next week, we should be done. But that could slide forwards or backwards, but that would be my hope." Cunningham explains there is currently an advisory group “that’s helping us kind of sift through candidates,” adding: “We've had a tremendous response of people across the country, of agents calling us, coaches, people calling on behalf of other people that are in the industry. A number of different search firms are wanting to be engaged. … But all the coaches we're talking to right now are playing, and so they're continuing to be in championship games or in the playoffs. So it'll probably take a week or so. I always like to do these things in about 24 to 48 hours, but just can't do that right now, given where we are in the season.” Once the list is narrowed to 10 or 12, Cunningham explains: “We’ll do Zoom interviews, then we'll do in-person interviews, and then we'll make a selection, so it allows us to interview some more people more quickly, and then narrow it down. Coaches will not talk to a committee of 12. But you want 10 or 12 people, because there's a lot of stakeholders at a university that should have input to the direction that you're headed. So we have 10 or 12 that will be the advisors, get us to narrow down to a group (of candidates) that we can interview by Zoom. That'll be a smaller group, and then an even smaller group will go on the road and actually meet with certain folks individually." As for what he’s looking for in candidates, Cunningham notes fit is important and adds: “My preference has always been [to] hire somebody that's done it, hire a head coach, either sitting head coach, or somebody that has done it. And then I think the last three or four hires I've made, I didn't do that. So I recognize that's where I start, but I don't always end up there.” More. (link, link)

Purdue AD Mike Bobinski on the timeline for hiring a new Football HC: "Our goal is moving forward in the most effective, efficient and expeditious way possible, to restore Purdue football to the level of success that we all expect, aspire to, and know that we're capable of. We want to make sure that we're deliberate and we identify and focus on the very best candidate going forward. My guess is that that would take a week, 10 days, something like that.” Bobinski on how NIL has impacted and will continue to impact the program: "The last two years, actually, last two and a half to three years with the NIL world, the way it evolved, was very different, and honestly, that world did not advantage Purdue. That was a challenge for us for a variety of reasons. Our folks don't necessarily respond warmly to the way NIL has evolved in the recent past, but that's going to change as we move forward, and I think that will bring the world back to us in a very positive way. There will be a very well-resourced position who will participate fully in the revenue share situation. That is a commitment that Purdue has made, and we intend to provide our coaches, obviously we're talking about football today, with a very much a level playing field, with people that they're competing against from a revenue share perspective. So that will be very positive.” (link, link)

D1Baseball’s Joe Healy examines how Oregon State built its 2025 baseball schedule as an independent, and Beavers HC Mitch Canham explains: “At first it’s like, well, okay, here’s some options on conferences, and I said ‘To be honest with you, I’d rather go this route right now’ because it’s different and it’s difficult, but at the same time, the opportunity of what Oregon State stands for—being blue collar, hard working—I think if anyone can navigate that space, I bet on us.” After agreeing to opening-season tournaments in Arizona and Texas, OSU’s real test was how it would build out its slate once conference seasons began. Healy explains the “schedule-building process wasn’t without speed bumps. Some coaches were reluctant to play a tough series in their conference bye week, while others are in strong enough conferences that they didn’t see the need to add the Beavers to their slate to bolster a potential postseason resume. But generally speaking, Canham was impressed by the number of coaches who went out of their way to offer assistance, whether it was coaches who were willing to give him an early peek at their conference’s schedule so he could figure out where every team’s bye weeks landed or offering to bring OSU into the fold for weekends that were already scheduled. Canham: “There were a handful of schools that said, ‘Hey, if you can’t find anything, jump in with us and the other opponent’ in certain weeks, and I found, especially here on the West Coast, there was a handful of folks that really take care of one another and want to see baseball continue to do the right thing.” As far as keeping the roster together amid the uncertainty, Canham says he “pulled everybody up [during the season] and said, ‘Hey, here’s the schedule as we have it right now, I know that we’re in the middle of the season and at the end of the season there’s a draft and the portal and all this other stuff, but you’re always going to get a very transparent conversation from us, and if you guys want to leave based on the games that we’re playing or whatever, then that’s your decision, but I’m going to give you the information now.’ He adds: “I’d rather give them the truth as I know it, and then we can talk about it together.” More. Pittsburgh Men’s Basketball HC Jeff Capel joins the Field of 68 podcast to discuss roster construction, physical and mental health issues, being on the hot seat and how his outlook has changed over the last few years. Capel opens up about his dismissal from Oklahoma and says: “I didn't want that to be kind of like my last thing as a head coach. I got fired, which was one of my biggest fears when I got the job at VCU at 27. And I got fired under some controversy about an NCAA allegation. It’s 2024 now, so it's been 14 years I’ll tell you now because the statute of limitations are gone and I don't even know that crap even matters anymore, but I didn’t know anything about it. Even when I was there, when that was going on, I was trying to figure out – for me, like my reputation, my name is on the line and so when I got this job I really wanted to have success just to show myself I could still do it.” Capel also reveals he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, which graduated into Crohn’s disease, and suffered a serious health scare in 2012. “I almost died. It was touch-and-go. They had to revive me from what I’ve been told.” At the end of his fourth season at Pitt, Capel recalls hearing the boos and “Fire Capel” chants from fans “ and I remember that season before games I would be back in my little section and I was just having these bad stomach cramps. I would be dry-heaving.” After that season, Capel began seeing a therapist and has since adopted the mindset of doing the best he can and making peace with where the chips fall. “I know we prepare. I don’t cheat the game. I don't cheat our program. I don't cheat our guys. I'm done, Jeff, with worrying about what other people think. I made a conscious effort at the beginning of Year Five – and I remember people got mad at me, maybe you did – I'm not going to do any media stuff that I don't have to do because I want to focus on my team.” Lots more.
