Oregon tops this week’s College Football Playoff rankings followed by Texas, Penn State, Notre Dame, Georgia, Ohio State, Tennessee, SMU, Indiana, Boise State, Alabama and Miami (FL) in the top 12. Full ranking. (link)

Michigan AD/CFP Selection Committee Chair Warde Manuel was asked how the committee will evaluate SMU relative to Alabama should the Mustangs lose the ACC Championship and says it depends on the exact outcome and how the game is played. It also depends on the results of other championship games and “how they performed as we ranked the teams this week, so we're not going to give – I get it. Some people think we should give them a boost if they beat a team who wins, but again, on the flipside, they don't want it to take away credit or demote them because the team lost in the championship, that kind of thing.” On whether teams could be bumped out of the top 12 for losing conference championship games, Manuel explains that “if you take, for example, Tennessee is ahead of SMU, Indiana is behind SMU; Tennessee will not drop below Indiana at any point. Neither team is playing. But SMU could move up, depending on how we evaluate the game. They could stay where they are or they could move down depending on the outcome of the game. … There's not another datapoint [for Indiana and Tennessee] because they're not playing in the championship games. So we don't have anything else to add to the evaluation of those teams, so we can't move them above or below each other.” Manuel also reiterated a message he’s delivered over the past several weeks: namely, that the committee deals in results, not projections. In regards to how that impacts SMU and Clemson he explains: “We just try to stay in the present and not look to the future as we evaluate what each team has done during the season, and we look forward to watching Clemson and SMU play on the field, and then we'll evaluate both teams once that game is done.” Full teleconference Q&A. Reactions from college football leaders abound, including this from ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips: “We are certainly pleased that SMU moved up in the rankings and that the Committee continued to recognize the Mustangs’ incredible season, which should unequivocally earn them a playoff spot, regardless of this weekend’s outcome. With that said, we are also incredibly shocked and disappointed that Miami dropped six spots to No. 12. Miami has more wins and fewer losses than the team directly ahead of them and a dominant victory over an SEC team whose late-season surge includes a win over No. 13 Ole Miss. Moreover, with two losses by a combined nine points – to a ranked Syracuse team and a Georgia Tech team that just took No. 5 Georgia to eight overtimes – Miami absolutely deserves better from the Committee. As we look ahead to the final rankings, we hope the Committee will reconsider and put a deserving Miami in the field. We will continue to look forward to this weekend, when Clemson and SMU have an opportunity to earn an ACC championship and represent the conference in the CFP.” (link)

Speaking of Miami, Hurricanes AD Dan Radakovich took to X to write: “Really?? What put Bama over the top of Miami for the last spot in is that Miami went 1-2 in their last 3 games (by an average of 4.5 pts, to a ranked Syracuse and (Georgia Tech) team that just took (Georgia) to 8OT). Bama went 2-1 (to 5-7 Auburn, destroyed by (Oklahoma), and beat FCS Mercer).” (link)

Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard and SMU AD Rick Hart also voiced their differences of opinion with one another. Pollard: “Disappointing that strength of schedule clearly does not matter for SMU, Indiana and Boise State. Message is clear – win as many games as possible regardless of who you play. Time to rethink non-conference scheduling. Very different standards than the basketball committee.” Hart responds: “Jamie, respect you but bad take. ISU had [North Dakota], Iowa, Arkansas St. [in the non-conference]. SMU had Nevada, HCU, TCU, BYU. (And scrambled due to Vandy dropping us.) SMU 1 of 2 to win all conf. games, 1 of 3 with 9 P4 wins, trailed a TOTAL of 6+ mins. last 9 games. I could go on… Stay off my lawn! [laughing tears emoji].” Pollard replies back: “Rick, beat Clemson Saturday and I will respect your ranking. Until then you did not play Clemson, Miami, Georgia Tech or Syracuse AND lost to BYU at home. Looks like your lawn may be artificial. [winking tongue out emoji].” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that a “portion of Big 12 and ACC presidents gathered Tuesday in Dallas for presentations from two entities, each proposing new models for college football: Len Perna-led College Sports Tomorrow & SMASH Capital’s Project Rudy. No Big Ten & SEC presidents attended, nor did Notre Dame. The presentations stretched at least an hour each, included detailed slides of the models and featured question-and-answer segments. No decisions were made and conversations are expected to continue.” (link)

Lehigh hopes to have its AD position filled by Christmas, New Year’s at the latest, according to CollegeAD, which is told by a source it’s “not gonna be a huge pool.” Despite not being on the search committee President Joseph Helble will be “intimately involved” in the process. CollegeAD also reports the pool of candidates could be put together by the end of the week. (link) The D1.dossier for the opening in Bethlehem is available. (link)

Temple AD Arthur Johnson confirms the process of hiring Football HC K.C. Keller was different than with his previous hire of Stan Drayton. “This was on me. Last time I had a committee. It took a whole lot more time. … This time I think I’ve been here long enough to answer questions. Also, I spent 15 years in rooms with head football coaches, two of them are in the Hall of Fame. I understand what it looks like. I know what it looks like. And I understand Temple better as well, so it was easier to maneuver and go on my own this time.” Hiring an experienced coach this time around was important, as Johnson explains: “If you understand the nuts and bolts of it to start with, it’s probably easier to adjust to everything else that’s happening, if you’ve got a core and a foundation.” Johnson also clarifies his comments about the Owls being late to build an NIL operation. “When I said late to the process, remember I came in here after it had already started. We had a great infrastructure in place and we were building on that infrastructure. I didn't have those relationships, and that’s as honest as I can be about it. But, at the same time, I’ve supported it from the start, I’ve been open about it, and I’ve made sure, if people have asked, I’ve directed them to go support it.” (link)

More from James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis as she tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy the concern expressed in the IRS’ memo earlier this week involved the “fact that there were donors that were contributing a lot of money and taking a tax write-off as a charitable contribution just to pay athletes. That really is the crux of the issue and what got them on the radar.” Davis also points out the “IRS takes a while to catch up,” so “even though some of these collectives might start winding down, or things might be shifting away from the collective over to the university, that doesn't still forgive the collective for what maybe they've done in the past. They can still be audited. ... What the penalty would be if something found was wrong, if they're already winding down, it's probably not a big deal, because they're already winding down, but there could still be something that can come from that.” (link)

Miami (FL) AD Dan Radakovich takes to X ahead of tonight’s College Football Playoff rankings reveal and writes: “Sensational [CFP]-worthy season for [the Hurricanes football team] – 10-2 and No. 1 in scoring and total offense; 11th in FPI; 7 wins vs. P4 teams and 3-0 vs. teams in top 30 of strength ranking; 6-2 record vs. bowl-eligible teams – 4-2 on the road; 2 losses by combined 9 points.” (link)

Former AT&T Chairman/Oklahoma alumnus Randall Stephenson will take on an advisory role to help OU with its approach to the House settlement. Sooners AD Joe Castiglione in an email to donors and season ticket holders explains Stephenson “will help guide us into restructuring our budget for this new world of college sports and into developing a football structure with elements similar to professional sports teams. This includes building out a more expansive General Manager function and developing a dynamic model that will allow OU Football to become a national gold-standard around talent acquisition, portal management, and player development. College athletics remains unique, but adaptations that draw upon the professional model are necessary to compete at the highest level. As part of Randall’s work, he also will make recommendations for funding player compensation and offer insights into pioneering governance models and athletics structures that will set up OU Athletics for success far into the future.” Stephenson will not be compensated for his work. Wisconsin plans to keep its scholarship limit at 85 football student-athletes and maintain its walk-on tradition next season, according to Badgers HC Luke Fickell, who says: “I think we’re kind of in that same mold” as the SEC’s approach. “I don’t know that the Big Ten is going to be much different. I know that there’s still some flexibility. By saying 85 [scholarships], you still have a lot of flexibility with the revenue sharing, so it’ll be interesting to see how things work.” By setting aside NIL funds for traditional walk-ons instead of maxing out scholarships, UW can build depth with players who may not contribute right away but could develop into contributors over time, and Fickell sees these walk-ons as crucial to Wisconsin’s identity. He adds: “There’s going to be a lot of flexibility. But I think that the idea of sticking with some hard cap number of scholarships is probably where we’ll be, and it’s a good thing for us because I still think it allows you to have some of those walk-on guys that are the core and crux of your program." Badgernotes’ Dillon Graff adds that this approach “goes beyond just finding diamonds in the rough – it’s about strengthening relationships with Wisconsin’s high school coaches and creating a sense of unity across the state, which you could argue Fickell's staff hasn't excelled at. Building a program with strong local roots could help foster more long-term stability and buy-in, which are invaluable in an era where the transfer portal has made rosters increasingly transient.” (link)

Maryland has received an $18M gift from alumnus & NBA marketing innovator Stephen Schanwald, who is providing $10M to Maryland Athletics in support of the department’s top priorities and $8M to the Robert H. Smith School of Business to endow its Sports Management Program. In recognition of his generosity, the program as well as the XFINITY Center Pavilion and Football Practice Fields at Jones-Hill House will be named in his honor. Additionally, the Stephen M. Schanwald-Russ Potts External Operations Suite in the XFINITY Center will honor Schanwald and his former mentor at UMD. (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown takes a look at the future of non-profit NIL collectives after Sportico’s Daniel Libit reported the BPS Foundation will shutter by the end of the year. Brown notes the recent IRS memo indicating the agency would scrutinize such collectives may largely be rendered moot if collective operations move in-house, at which point the donations may be tax-deductible. “Occasionally, lawmakers of both major parties have raised questions about what revenue should be considered ‘unrelated business taxable income,’ or UBIT, in college athletics. But with Republicans controlling both the House and the Senate next year, and with Republican Donald Trump taking over the presidency in 2025, [James Moore & Co. Partner Katie] Davis told me she doesn’t expect the federal government to seriously take a whack at removing the tax-exempt status of any athletic departments, (although she did note that some future MMR deals that involve both university and athlete IP could trigger an UBIT classification).” Brown adds: “one of the few regulatory bodies slower than the NCAA…is the IRS. And by the time they finally understood what was happening, the business and everything else changed. If those audits finally come, the organizations they investigate may very well have already closed up shop. The whole thing could be moot. Or, at the very least, someone else’s problem.” (link)

The Nashville Sports Council has submitted a bid to host the FCS National Championship games in 2026 and 2027. The council partnered with Vanderbilt and the Ohio Valley Conference in putting together the bid, which included proposing both championship games be played at Vanderbilt's newly renovated FirstBank Stadium. Nashville Sports Council President/CEO Scott Ramsey: "We have our fingers crossed. We're hopeful in the next couple of weeks they will make a decision and hopefully it's Nashville and we can kind of get rolling and start working on it. I believe they want to decide on the next city as soon as possible. … The new renovations at FirstBank will obviously be complete for next year and I think we've got a really good shot at filling it. [The FCS] has been selling out in Frisco with the exception of COVID the last 13 years in a row. The new total capacity at FirstBank will be somewhere in the low 30,000s including the new club seats and south end zone. We think it's the right size to hopefully increase attendance and provide a new destination for those fans." (link)

The inaugural Players Era Festival debuted to rave reviews from coaches and The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman & Samuel Lance, who call the tournament a “superb event.” Creighton HC Greg McDermott agrees, saying: “I’ve been doing this for 36 years and I’d never have expected this is the first year of an event. It was really well done.” Alabama HC Nate Oats adds: “I thought it was pretty damn good. I think it’s the best event out there right now. Everything was great.” Oregon HC Dana Altman’s only issue was the two-day layoff, but he praised the accommodations at the MGM, the food, and the quality of the referees. Normally, Goodman points out, the teams have to pay for travel and food. But everything was taken care of by the Players Era. EverWonder’s Ian Orefice tells Goodman that “we’re going to basically break even this year. And then when all the money is deposited on December 5, the conversations between us and the teams will be fundamentally different.” Next year, former And1 founder Seth Berger says the tentative plan is to have games on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, with somewhere between 16 and 20 teams in the field. The tournament will remain with the MGM Grand Garden Arena and add Michelob Ultra Arena along with a third (possibly T-Mobile Arena). The winning team will get an additional million dollars. Berger: “This isn’t just about one event. We’re trying to make the Players Era the biggest brand so we can play the players even more. We’re looking at down the road having a huge impact in the sport.” Goodman also believes that “this thing could become a premiere MTE event for college basketball.” (link, link)

The Athletic’s Grace Raynor catches up with several college football staffers and recruits to discuss the emotional toll flipping one’s commitment has on all involved and notes that according to the 247Sports database, there have been 504 decommitments and counting in the 2025 cycle. One Big Ten staffer tells Raynor: “It’s so interesting because when you flip a kid, it’s super exciting. But when you lose a kid, it’s devastating. You build that relationship and you know their birthdays and you know what’s going on in their life — (if) they have prom coming up or homecoming or whatever it may be, and ‘Oh, he took his girlfriend out on a date’ or ‘It’s his girlfriend’s birthday.’ You invest so much time that when they flip, it’s almost like a breakup. It’s so disheartening.” For Boston College commit Sterling Sanders, playing Power 4 football came with a price. He had committed to Georgia Southern after developing a close relationship with Georgia Southern HC Clay Helton and Director of On-Campus Recruiting Alexis Villareal. He tells Raynor: “I really loved Georgia Southern. Georgia Southern did everything for me. It was very hard to flip. I was like, ‘OK, let me make this big decision. I have to put my big boy pants on.'” Still, most flips come with some warning, particularly when the prospect visits another school after already committing. The Big Ten staffer: “[A recruit will] tell his position coach at the school that he’s committed to, ‘Hey, I just want to take an OV here just to check it out.’ A trip for my mom, Coach. A trip for my mom.’ And then it comes down the line, and that’s where they end up going. Very rare is it a flip that you don’t know about. Flips you don’t know about tend to happen literally within the 24 hours of signing day and someone’s offered more [NIL money].” More. (link)

Tulsa QB Cooper Legas and the family of linebacker Myles Jackson are looking for NIL answers following the departure of Football HC Kevin Wilson. Despite promises, both say they’ve received no money, and Jackson’s mother, Veronica, explains: “We are looking for a resolution. It’s a letdown now that the coach has been let go, no one can give us answers. … They’re just passing the ball. And I think it’s just trying to be thrown under the rug.” Legas adds: “Honestly, we’ve been scraping by with what my wife’s been making. So I came here expecting to have, honestly, a decent amount of extra money and be able to save and be able to go home with a decent sum of money to start out in the real world, but just been living off what my wife’s been making as a receptionist.” TU says in a statement to 2 News Oklahoma that it is unaware of any promises of NIL payments made by the former head football coach to student-athletes completing their eligibility. Wilson, meanwhile, tells 2 News: “We had no money – zero. We couldn’t give money we didn’t have.” (link)
