South Carolina has finalized a six-year deal with TCU AD Jeremiah Donati to take over as the Gamecocks’ next AD, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger. Funk Associates assisted with the search. According to FootballScoop’s John Brice, a “formal announcement is expected in the coming days.” Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fischer says Donati’s deal is “believed to make him one of the top five highest paid ADs in the SEC.” (link, link, link)

Tennessee AD Danny White says he’d like to see more objectivity in the College Football Playoff selection process: “I don’t think there was anything wrong with the ranking system of the old BCS. The problem with the old BCS is it was only two teams. So we’ve got the number of teams right now with 12 – I'd love to see it go all the way to 16 – but we’ve now introduced this really subjective rankings process that I think is unnecessary, and I'm not going to throw stones at a committee that I'm sure they're all doing as good of a job as they can, and they're trying to work through it. I think those are good people working in earnest. I’m certainly not going to throw stones at other teams. … I will, though, criticize the fact that we don’t have a more objective computer-based ranking system that just makes it very clear. Everyone understands what the parameters are and it is what it is. I think it would leave a lot less consternation on the back end that we're seeing all across the country right now.” (link)

With the elimination of NLIs, On3’s Pete Nakos notes signing bonuses are “becoming the norm in recruiting, ranging from $10K to six figures depending on the talent. Contracts are being frontloaded before revenue sharing begins, so deals don’t need to go through an arbiter. NIL collectives are handing out signing bonuses to ensure commitments and avoid flips. The National Letter of Intent rule changes prohibit recruits from signing multiple valid aid agreements. … If the dollars on paper do not line up, recruits can not sign paperwork and open their recruitment. As Wednesday progresses and top recruits make final decisions, financial decisions will be made.” One Big 12 HC recently remarked that “this is the first year that the first, second or third question has been about money. At the high school level that hasn’t been like that. It is now. Before this year high school recruiting was still pretty old-school for the most part but now it’s a lot about money. I think this will be big for them and us.” While it remains to be seen how NSD will play out in the aggregate, another Big 12 source recently predicted: “It used to be two separate things. Sign the dotted line and get the kid in the building. Then figure out the financials. Now they’re combining it into one thing, and that is going to f*ck up a ton of signings. This is going to turn into a sh*t show.” (link)

AD Advisors, the collegiate consulting firm led by former Auburn AD Jay Jacobs, former George W. Bush White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer, international high-performance well-being expert Carlette Patterson, and C-level major league sports executive Jeff Holbrook, has studied 800 FBS portal entrants going back to the 2020-21 transfer portal window and found that 60% of those entrants “transferred down” while 10% were not picked up at all. Jacobs consequently notes that “sometimes we get so blocked by our view of the one-third that is making a big jump or becoming a starter to a Power Five we don't really realize what is actually going on underneath the water of that iceberg.” The study also found that one-third of entrants transferred multiple times in their careers, with a large percentage saying student-athletes can be lured into the portal with the promise of lucrative NIL deals and other benefits. Jacobs points out the information regarding NIL’s impact on the portal was not quantitative, but the study was able to document through interviews the impacts NIL has on the decision to transfer. “It’s often a major reason why athletes transfer, but we also found through interviews that it can lead to deceit and empty promises.” Overall, Jacobs believes there are “probably several different things that could come out of this. I don't think there's one proposal that would be beneficial across all the parties involved, student, athletes, coaches, administrators, fans alike.” The sample of schools AD Advisors researched were Kansas, Georgia Tech, Texas Tech, Michigan State, Colorado, Indiana, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisville, Oregon, Ball State, Boise State, East Carolina, Arkansas State, and Western Kentucky. SBJ’s Bret McCormick takes a look behind the scenes of the Rose Bowl’s $80M renovation and notes it’s trickier than most renovations because of the stadium’s designation as a National Historic Landmark. Rose Bowl CEO Jens Weiden tells McCormick that with UCLA joining the Big Ten and the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and 2028 Olympics looming, the timing was right to make some upgrades. “The building has received all these different uses” over the decades and “this is an investment in that business.” The stadium’s historic landmark designation, Weiden adds, “makes doing everything more difficult, but that’s also the magic.” To embark on the project, McCormick explains Weiden’s team “worked with Historic Resource Group, a national consulting firm also headquartered in Pasadena, to ensure the renovations — designed by Gensler — didn’t diminish the historic character of the stadium and repeat the fate of Chicago’s Soldier Field, which lost its National Historic Landmark status after a poorly received 2002 renovation.” The first phase, which carries a price tag of roughly $35M, includes many components that have already been completed, including UCLA’s standing room-only student section, but McCormick notes that the “highest profile changes are still to come. The $20M South End Zone Field Club is scheduled to be completed by the 2026 college football season, and will give the Rose Bowl field-level premium for the first time. The club will have room for 900 people with their seats perched above the field-level space, and UCLA’s football team will run onto the field through the club. It will create new revenue streams for the stadium, including premium seating income and LED signage inventory and sponsorship revenue. In August, the Rose Bowl found a new sponsorship sales agency (alongside UCLA) in JMI Sports, and part of their 11-year deal, Weiden said, was an $8M capital investment by JMI into the new end zone field club.” More on the renovations. ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips tells Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger: “If you want to kill the conference championship games, have somebody who is within the top 12 play for a championship and have them fall out and be leapfrogged.” SMU AD Rick Hart adds: “You talk about the future of championship games. Well, I do think how this plays out could shape that. It doesn’t make sense for a team in the playoff field when the regular season ends to play a 13th game if it’s going to be used against that team. How this plays out will shape the future of conference championship games.” There is also a disincentive for teams who are already in to fully embrace conference championships, as former Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson explains: “There is a risk-reward. I think each conference is gonna have to look in the mirror [and say],‘The model has changed. I’d rather be in a 12-team playoff than the conference championship.’” To Georgia HC Kirby Smart, it depends on who you ask. “When you ask a guy that's been in the SEC for about 30 years, has only been a part of five or six of them, five or six national championships, it's equal to that to me because it's just as hard, it's just as elusive. It's an extreme honor to make this game with the schedule that you have to go through, then with an opportunity to win it. … I mean, we put the SEC championship on a wall and it's there forever.” The Big 12 Championship represents another complicating factor, which Commissioner Brett Yormark highlights: “It’s playing out that our championship game is critically important to both of our schools. It’s a tentpole event and we’re committed to it. For this particular season, it’s going to matter. Win and you’re in.” Lots more, including how eliminating title games and moving the postseason up by a week could benefit the CFP overall. (link)

SMU Football HC Rhett Lashlee believes coaches will want to skip conference championship games (or bench starters) if SMU loses the ACC Championship to Clemson and drops below Alabama in the College Football Playoff rankings, telling On3’s Andy Staples and Ari Wasserman: “If our team all got COVID today and didn't play we're in. Right? We don’t have another datapoint to drop us below anybody that’s behind us. … I think if you open up that door, you’re going to see a lot of people do a lot of crazy things. We’re not going to. We’re going to go play in Charlotte and we're going to try to compete for our championship because that's the right thing to do. That’s what competitors do. We value an opportunity to share the field with someone like Clemson, a fantastic team, and try to do something special. And so like I said, I'm going to choose to believe that on Sunday that the right thing will be done as well on the other end.” (link)

Miami (FL) Football HC Mario Cristobal complains that his team was “not assessed justly and fairly” by the College Football Playoff Selection Committee: “Winning 10 games is exponentially harder than winning nine. This whole, ‘This conference is better than that conference,’ some of the teams are, but not all the teams are. Never once were we in a blowout loss against a .500 team.” In comparing the Canes to Alabama, Cristobal notes his team was 4-2 on the road against teams that finished .500 or better while Alabama went 1-3, adding: “I worked at Alabama, and it was an honor to work there, during a time when it (went) on an epic run. But times have changed, football has changed. It’s hard to find a weekend where there’s not several close, tight games and upsets because the margins in college football are super thin. Winning gets harder and harder, and there’s a lot more parity. … It needs reexamination and assessment so it can be done the right way. So much is on the line.” (link)

Ole Miss Football HC Lane Kiffin has some questions for the College Football Playoff Selection Committee: “You guys actually meet for days and come up with these rankings?? … Do you actually watch the quality of players, teams, and road environments (we played in one of yours [the ACC’s] this year [sleeping z’s emoji]) or just try and make the ACC feel relevant?? Btw one of your teams paid us not to play again next year. Same #12 spot you guys had Clemson ranked last week. How did that go against the SEC??? Rewatch UGA-Clemson closely if you want a reminder of the two conferences. #SpotTheBall anywhere, @ACCFootball. #RememberTakeAKnee.” (link)

Fox's 12.3M viewers for this year’s Michigan-Ohio State football game is the matchup's lowest figure since 2017 (10.5M), according to SBJ’s Austin Karp, who notes it’s still the second most-watched college football game and most-watched Big Ten game of the season. Fox Sports President of Insights and Analytics Michael Mulvihill adds that the 2024 college football regular season is the “most-watched ever with over 161B minutes of viewing across all rated networks. Beats last year’s then-record by +6%. Army-Navy still to come but won’t change the story.” (link, link); Texas-Texas A&M’s matchup on ABC was the network’s most-watched of the weekend, averaging 9.5M viewers with a peak of 10.6M. Georgia-Georgia Tech averaged 8.5M with a peak of 11.5M in OT. The Alabama-Auburn matchup averaged 7.4M viewers, peaking at 8.6M. (link)

Michigan AD/CFP Selection Committee Chair Warde Manuel was asked how the committee will evaluate SMU relative to Alabama should the Mustangs lose the ACC Championship and says it depends on the exact outcome and how the game is played. It also depends on the results of other championship games and “how they performed as we ranked the teams this week, so we're not going to give – I get it. Some people think we should give them a boost if they beat a team who wins, but again, on the flipside, they don't want it to take away credit or demote them because the team lost in the championship, that kind of thing.” On whether teams could be bumped out of the top 12 for losing conference championship games, Manuel explains that “if you take, for example, Tennessee is ahead of SMU, Indiana is behind SMU; Tennessee will not drop below Indiana at any point. Neither team is playing. But SMU could move up, depending on how we evaluate the game. They could stay where they are or they could move down depending on the outcome of the game. … There's not another datapoint [for Indiana and Tennessee] because they're not playing in the championship games. So we don't have anything else to add to the evaluation of those teams, so we can't move them above or below each other.” Manuel also reiterated a message he’s delivered over the past several weeks: namely, that the committee deals in results, not projections. In regards to how that impacts SMU and Clemson he explains: “We just try to stay in the present and not look to the future as we evaluate what each team has done during the season, and we look forward to watching Clemson and SMU play on the field, and then we'll evaluate both teams once that game is done.” Full teleconference Q&A. (link)

Reactions from college football leaders abound, including this from ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips: “We are certainly pleased that SMU moved up in the rankings and that the Committee continued to recognize the Mustangs’ incredible season, which should unequivocally earn them a playoff spot, regardless of this weekend’s outcome. With that said, we are also incredibly shocked and disappointed that Miami dropped six spots to No. 12. Miami has more wins and fewer losses than the team directly ahead of them and a dominant victory over an SEC team whose late-season surge includes a win over No. 13 Ole Miss. Moreover, with two losses by a combined nine points – to a ranked Syracuse team and a Georgia Tech team that just took No. 5 Georgia to eight overtimes – Miami absolutely deserves better from the Committee. As we look ahead to the final rankings, we hope the Committee will reconsider and put a deserving Miami in the field. We will continue to look forward to this weekend, when Clemson and SMU have an opportunity to earn an ACC championship and represent the conference in the CFP.” (link)
|
Speaking of Miami, Hurricanes AD Dan Radakovich took to X to write: “Really?? What put Bama over the top of Miami for the last spot in is that Miami went 1-2 in their last 3 games (by an average of 4.5 pts, to a ranked Syracuse and (Georgia Tech) team that just took (Georgia) to 8OT). Bama went 2-1 (to 5-7 Auburn, destroyed by (Oklahoma), and beat FCS Mercer).” (link)
|
Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard and SMU AD Rick Hart also voiced their differences of opinion with one another. Pollard: “Disappointing that strength of schedule clearly does not matter for SMU, Indiana and Boise State. Message is clear – win as many games as possible regardless of who you play. Time to rethink non-conference scheduling. Very different standards than the basketball committee.” Hart responds: “Jamie, respect you but bad take. ISU had [North Dakota], Iowa, Arkansas St. [in the non-conference]. SMU had Nevada, HCU, TCU, BYU. (And scrambled due to Vandy dropping us.) SMU 1 of 2 to win all conf. games, 1 of 3 with 9 P4 wins, trailed a TOTAL of 6+ mins. last 9 games. I could go on… Stay off my lawn! [laughing tears emoji].” Pollard replies back: “Rick, beat Clemson Saturday and I will respect your ranking. Until then you did not play Clemson, Miami, Georgia Tech or Syracuse AND lost to BYU at home. Looks like your lawn may be artificial. [winking tongue out emoji].” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that a “portion of Big 12 and ACC presidents gathered Tuesday in Dallas for presentations from two entities, each proposing new models for college football: Len Perna-led College Sports Tomorrow & SMASH Capital’s Project Rudy. No Big Ten & SEC presidents attended, nor did Notre Dame. The presentations stretched at least an hour each, included detailed slides of the models and featured question-and-answer segments. No decisions were made and conversations are expected to continue.” (link)

Lehigh hopes to have its AD position filled by Christmas, New Year’s at the latest, according to CollegeAD, which is told by a source it’s “not gonna be a huge pool.” Despite not being on the search committee President Joseph Helble will be “intimately involved” in the process. CollegeAD also reports the pool of candidates could be put together by the end of the week. (link) The D1.dossier for the opening in Bethlehem is available. (link)

Temple AD Arthur Johnson confirms the process of hiring Football HC K.C. Keller was different than with his previous hire of Stan Drayton. “This was on me. Last time I had a committee. It took a whole lot more time. … This time I think I’ve been here long enough to answer questions. Also, I spent 15 years in rooms with head football coaches, two of them are in the Hall of Fame. I understand what it looks like. I know what it looks like. And I understand Temple better as well, so it was easier to maneuver and go on my own this time.” Hiring an experienced coach this time around was important, as Johnson explains: “If you understand the nuts and bolts of it to start with, it’s probably easier to adjust to everything else that’s happening, if you’ve got a core and a foundation.” Johnson also clarifies his comments about the Owls being late to build an NIL operation. “When I said late to the process, remember I came in here after it had already started. We had a great infrastructure in place and we were building on that infrastructure. I didn't have those relationships, and that’s as honest as I can be about it. But, at the same time, I’ve supported it from the start, I’ve been open about it, and I’ve made sure, if people have asked, I’ve directed them to go support it.” (link)

More from James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis as she tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy the concern expressed in the IRS’ memo earlier this week involved the “fact that there were donors that were contributing a lot of money and taking a tax write-off as a charitable contribution just to pay athletes. That really is the crux of the issue and what got them on the radar.” Davis also points out the “IRS takes a while to catch up,” so “even though some of these collectives might start winding down, or things might be shifting away from the collective over to the university, that doesn't still forgive the collective for what maybe they've done in the past. They can still be audited. ... What the penalty would be if something found was wrong, if they're already winding down, it's probably not a big deal, because they're already winding down, but there could still be something that can come from that.” (link)
