In the D3FB Huddle’s Frank Rossi updates on his report of Keystone’s potential closure. “I want to be clear that the sourcing is now broadly based, including from inside the school, with several people outside the school having been made aware of a decision to close (including the teach-out schools that would receive Keystone students). The reason I won’t retract the earlier post is because it appears clear that a decision to close was being conveyed by the school, with details as minute as the potential waiver of final exams being provided and how conferences would handle scheduling as a result in winter sports and beyond. However, we were told by someone inside the school that something ‘new’ was brought to the table at some point today. While it is unlikely that it would be a partner school at this late point, it might be some sort of financial assistance to help keep the school open through the semester. […] the sourcing we received was more than mere conjecture, and the situation today appears to be in some way very fluid.” (link); KC Football HC Justin Higgins and others have refuted reporting the school’s closure, stating no decision has been made. Northland AD Dan Schumacher shares his concerns about the NCAA given his perspective having served as an AD in each division. “If the Power 4 leave the NCAA, how are we going to afford things? I mean our dues will go up $200,000 as a Division III school just to keep supporting an NCAA model. […] I just don't know if the resources are going to be there to support an NCAA governing board or what that's going to look like in the future if those schools do truly move on to their own and create their own business model. They've been changing the rules, you've got the transfer portal, NIL. Just to say that you could pay an athlete now, it just blows my mind and I don't know how the sports are going to survive. You're going to see a lot of lower level DIs, like a Chicago State, maybe have to go down to DII because there'll be no conference for them. The Horizon League and some of these Division I basketball leagues, they're all low-level mid-majors and they don't have the resources that Oklahoma or Michigan or Notre Dame has, so it's going to be interesting times as this thing evolves. And then you throw in Congress with it, the NCAA issues with the government, I just don't know where it's going to go and where the NCAA will land in the end.” More on BOSCA. (link)

Fitch Ratings is expecting a “deteriorating credit environment” for higher education in 2025, citing enrollment challenges, increased costs, and more. Fitch is projecting net tuition growth between 2-4% and 1% median budget growth, which is “unlikely to be sufficient to fully offset still-elevated labor and wage costs, rising capital needs and a sharply uncertain legislative landscape.” Senior Director Emily Wadhwani: “Variable enrollment, rising capital needs and continued operating pressures will continue to chip away at more vulnerable higher education institutions in 2025, even if inflationary pressures ease and interest rates fall. A widening credit gap continues to prompt an elevated level of consolidation, thus far concentrated among smaller, less selective and more tuition-dependent institutions.” (link)

+ Trinity (CT) selects Queens (DI) President Daniel Lugo as its 23rd president. (link)

+ Enrollment data this fall found 18-year-old freshmen enrollment fell five percent this fall compared to last year. Last year’s analysis from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center found the same metric ticked up three percent. Just three states saw an increase in 18-year-old freshmen enrollment – Alabama, Delaware and Louisiana – while the 46 states whose number fell averaged a 7.1% decrease. The drop in male and female 18-year-old freshmen enrollment fell by an identical 6.1%, with those whose gender was missing or unknown grew by 10.5%, as that cohort’s share of the population jumped from 5.5% to 7.3% in two years. By race, white students saw the largest decline at 10%, followed by multiracial at 8.3% and black at 8.2%. National College Attainment Network Senior Director Bill DeBaun: “My gut, as one who looks at a lot of FAFSA completion data, is that if we had had a normal FAFSA year last year, we would not be staring at a 5 percent decline in 18-year-old enrollment this semester. We were starting to build some real positive momentum coming out of the pandemic. And this is a full reverse on that momentum.” (link, link - data)

+ Minnesota’s State Grant program is facing a projected $211M deficit for the 2026-27 biennium. The program, which awarded $214M in FY23, supported 40K students in 2024 while the state system saw enrollment increase 8.1% this year. (link)
