More from the intro presser of new South Carolina AD Jeremiah Donati: “When it comes to winning, I understand the standard here is set very high at USC. Wearing the colors garnet and black comes with big expectations across the board in everything we do and that is a great thing. I welcome those expectations. I want to dream with you about what is possible here. Candidly, that is why I am here. That is one of the biggest reasons I came is to dream with you all. [...] We have, hopefully, real NIL and revenue sharing on the other side. Difficult to say right now. I am going to spend a lot of time in the coming weeks and months figuring out how our collectives are working because that will be critical. Traditional NIL support will be incredibly important for our student athletes and so we are going to be very aggressive there. [...] A couple of things, candidly, that I thought were really intriguing about this opportunity were the stadium renovations potentially. I was fortunate to be a part of that twice at TCU and the multi-use entertainment district. You think about building together. I have seen other examples of that around the country. But having a connection directly to the university and having this branded South Carolina Gamecocks is pretty special. There are not too many places in the country that could pull that off.” As for compensation in Columbia: “South Carolina is making sure Donati will be in the capital city for a while. The board approved a six-year contract for Donati that will pay him $1.9 million per year and increase $100,000 annually. His contract runs from Jan. 2, 2025 through June 30, 2031. That is a raise from what he was making at TCU ($1.33 million) and also more than Tanner ($1.175 million) is currently bringing in. USC will also pay his $2.5 million contract buyout at TCU.” (link, link)

TCU brass - outgoing Chancellor Victor Boschini & incoming Chancellor Daniel Pullin - talk to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Mac Engle about Donati’s replacement. Boschini: “I don’t think the power of sports will get bigger, I think it will get exponentially bigger. They don’t call it, ‘News, Weather and Pottery.’ Ask any kid under 30, if there was a common culture in America, it would be either sports or music. Every kid knows sports, every kid knows music, whether they are into it or not.” Pullin: “The world of college athletics has changed so much in the last three years, and the skill set necessary to do that job is constantly evolving. I’m sure we’ll be looking for someone who fits at TCU and brings energy, enthusiasm, and a love for student-athletes, among other attributes.” Engle also notes: “TCU has hired a search firm to pool potential candidates, and (new Chancellor put a four to six week timeline on this process. Both he and outgoing chancellor Victor Boschini will collaborate on this search.” (link)

“Listen to me. Unequivocally, SMU should be in the (College Football Playoff) field. Period. … The only Power 4 teams that went unblemished in conference play are Oregon and SMU. They played two Power 4 teams in the non-conference. … We lived through last year where the committee indicated that Florida State was a different team without Jordan Travis. SMU made a change [at quarterback] and haven’t looked back since. That cuts both ways. We can’t talk about personnel one year and then don’t take it into consideration the next year. … If [SMU] loses to a top-20 Clemson team, nothing has changed. An 11-2 ACC undefeated regular season team...would potentially be leapfrogged by a 9-3 team? That's not going to work. And if you do that, then you have completely blown up this idea that playing for a conference championship is what you should shoot for. Because the kids want to play for a national championship. … If you undermine that and somebody that’s in the field going into a weekend when only a handful of teams play and everyone else sits out and is protected so to speak… that is super dangerous to a process that should not be an invitational, but should be absolutely the best teams in a true playoff.” More from ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips as he continues to push the league’s CFP candidacy. Before Lehigh AD Joe Sterrett retires at the end of the month, he sat for a Q&A with The Brown and White, reflecting on his 48 years of employment at the school, 38 of which have been in the big chair. Sterrett started as a Mountain Hawks football student-athlete, then during law school coached football before finally transitioning to administration. He says his favorite part about his job has been its people-oriented nature. The biggest challenge, however, has been “funding a college athletics program.” On the wish for his legacy: “The focus has been for this institution to embrace the value of competitive athletic experience as part of the educational and developmental process for young people. I think this is all part of the educational process, and I think we have worked really hard to have a program that lives into that mindset. I think we’ve been consistently convicted about ensuring that our athletes are good students, and good students can also be really good competitive athletes, and I’m most proud of that. I hope that sustains because that’s, at the end of the day, at the core of the process, that’s what matters the most.” (link)

MEAC Commissioner Sonja Stills joins AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to reflect on strategic planning, realignment and expansion and the role of athletics in shaping the culture at an HBCU. Stills introduces Brown to the concept of “long-range” planning and provides insight into her methods for cultivating collaboration among league CEOs and establishing buy-in from conference members. Stills: [Conference Presidents give me] “the freedom to push the conference in the right direction. We have a strategic and long-range plan…and we have all the stakeholders buy in. If we’re sticking towards that, they understand my vision because I wouldn’t be here if they didn’t buy into the vision that I have for the conference.” Stills emphasizes the importance of consistent evaluation and retooling of the plan to incorporate the ongoing changes and impacts of decisions such as the House settlement on conference members. Stills also discusses the development of the MEAC Foundation to strengthen the foundation of the Elite Eight as the league considers expansion and details the process for defining fit for potential future members. Right now, Stills asserts that “we’re fine as the eight” and aren’t in a rush to expand. “We have to make sure we are methodical about what types of institutions we bring in that match our footprint, that are going to be competitive within our conference and academically. In the MEAC we have high academic institutions, so we need to make sure the institutions that come in really fit, and that’s written into the strategic plan.” More on ADU. (link)

Syracuse AD John Wildhack says the department needs “to do a better job” of marketing the Women’s Basketball team, “and we will in terms of marketing this program and introducing this program to the community. We also need the community’s help to lean in a little bit.” His statements come after HC Felisha Legette-Jack’s comment last month, following a game with listed attendance of 2K, about needing more fan support “I’m disappointed in my fanbase here. Nobody f**king cares, man.” (link)

Virginia has received a multi-million dollar commitment from an anonymous donor to supercharge its Football NIL efforts. Per the anonymous donor: “A football team is the flagship brand of a public university; it is the part of the school most frequently seen by the largest number of people. Sustained winning in football energizes the student body and activates our alumni. It attracts our country's best and brightest to matriculate at school. I am bullish on the future success of this program and optimistic that this commitment will be a catalyst for increased support.” (link)

Similar to what UConn Women’s Basketball student-athlete Paige Bueckers signed over the summer, LSU women’s hoops star Flau’jae Johnson has signed an NIL deal with Unrivaled, the soon-to-launch 3x3 basketball league, that will also give her equity in Unrivaled. Greenwood Ave. Partner RJ Harris helped facilitate the deal between Johnson and the league. Both Bueckers and Johnson plan to play in Unrivaled’s second season in 2026. (link)

Overtime this fall launched a trio of podcasts with Colorado football student-athletes Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter and LSU women’s hoops standout Flau’jae Johnson. So far, the company says they have garnered over 200M views via earned media, and Overtime President of Content and Media Marc Kohn talks about the foray into football: “The last two years that Shedeur Sanders played in high school, we had a docuseries that followed Shedeur and Deion and that team, so we've been really well positioned in the football space. Shedeur and Travis embody the brand of Overtime, so it was really a pretty easy decision on, ‘Who are you going to target to do an athlete talk show in the college football space?’ … It's access that you can't get anywhere. And they're both real people. They’re open. They're honest. That authenticity that you get from both of them on a weekly basis really resonates.” With Sanders and Hunter likely off to the NFL, Kohn expects to continue featuring college football players. “It is certainly something that we've had a lot of inbound asks to partner on a bunch of these shows. We know that we have unlocked a category that we believe can be really massive for us, and so whether that is doubling our slate in the next 12 months, not so sure that is the number, but it's probably pretty close.” (link)

ASB Glass Floor is working to add a suite of third-party tech vendors into a system for training that includes player- and shot-tracking and statistical visualizations, among other features as the company continues to expand in North America, according to SBJ’s Rob Schaefer. VP of Strategic Accounts Chris Thornton explains: “We see the integration of all the data providers that the coaches are using now on top of this, so you can get the data – where the shots are being taken, what’s happening in the last two minutes of plays, and you can put that on top of the court. You want to do your Xs and Os, this is no different than your simple iPad app. Now integrate all the technology and the data – that those companies are already connecting with the coaches on – we want to be able to integrate them all into GlassCourt OS.” ASB Managing Director/majority owner Christof Babinsky is particularly optimistic about growth in U.S. college athletics, where ASB is engaged in conversations about permanent and rental installations, such as Kentucky’s use of ASB during this year’s Big Blue Madness. Babinsky: “We’re trying to bring interactive, computer game elements into physical activity.” (link)

Michigan AD Warde Manuel is set to receive a five-year extension through June 2030, and a “source told ESPN's Pete Thamel that the average annual compensation on Manuel's new contract will be nearly $2.4M, which includes deferred compensation. That puts him near the top of the Big Ten for athletic director salaries.” (link)

South Carolina officially announced Jeremiah Donati as its next AD, and in his introductory remarks, Donati stated he is setting four priorities in Columbia: “Number one starts with academic success and achievement, making sure our student athletes get their degrees from the University of South Carolina. Number two, we are going to deliver an unbelievable student athlete experience for all of our Gamecocks.” Third is driving revenue and identifying areas of growth and for development, and “of course, four, we are going to compete at the very highest level for SEC and National Championships. I pledge that we will pursue excellence in all these and we will do so while staying true to the mission values of the University of South Carolina.” (link)

A group of state legislators from around the country today released a statement in conjunction with the NCPA arguing that the House case settlement directly conflicts with state laws. State Senators Nancy Skinner (D-CA), Megan Hunt (I-NE), James Manning Jr. (D-OR), and Steven Bradford (D-CA): “We worked hard to adopt NIL laws specifically to end the NCAA and conferences’ unjust NIL restrictions imposed on college athletes in our states. Our state NIL laws passed with overwhelming bipartisan support. Terms in the preliminary settlement in House v. NCAA attempt to allow the NCAA and conferences to restrict our college athletes’ freedom to earn NIL compensation from boosters and NIL collectives, for example. However, this and other restrictions are illegal in our respective state.” The lawmakers also point out that because the states themselves aren’t parties to the lawsuit, they’re not bound to its terms, and they urge schools to consider state laws when putting together their future compensation strategies. In addition, they are sending letters to universities to “clarify that, even if this settlement is granted final approval, our universities, conferences, and the NCAA are prohibited from imposing such NIL restrictions on athletes and universities in our state.” NCPA Executive Director Ramogi Huma: “Unless the NCAA can enforce NIL restrictions on all universities, it won’t enforce NIL restrictions on any universities. The universities in the other states aren’t going to be handcuffed while universities in other states are free. We’ve seen this dynamic since July 2021. Even states with no NIL laws had athletes engaging in NIL activities.” (link, link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann and Daniel Libit note this argument is “not new, nor is their framing of it legally rigorous. In October, seven athlete objectors…filed a 30-page objection to the House settlement” and “raised several types of objections, including that the settlement appears to violate state laws that forbid the NCAA or a conference from punishing a college for offering athletes compensation for their NIL. The filing was authored by Hausfeld LLP attorneys Michael Hausfeld, Michael Lehmann, Nicholas Murphy and Theodore DiSalvo. Though they don’t acknowledge it, the lawmakers and NCPA try to build on the Hausfeld filing by citing a case, League of Residential Neighborhood Advocates v. City of Los Angeles, decided by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in 2007. The press release contends that this appellate ruling established legal precedent that “a settlement cannot require a state official (such as a university athletic director) to violate a state law. … If the viewpoints expressed in the press release were contained in a filing to Wilken and corroborated by applicable case law and other supporting materials, they would likely have more suasion. In their current form, the viewpoints are hypothetical concerns raised by non-parties. But even if those viewpoints were captured in a filing, Wilken’s evaluation of the settlement centers on whether the deal addresses the alleged violations of federal antitrust law detailed in the House, Hubbard and Carter complaints. To the extent the settlement is hypothetically problematic under other areas of law, including state laws, additional litigation beyond the scope of Wilken’s review may be required to convert those concerns into action.” (link)

MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher sent a letter to NCAA President Charlie Baker and the DI Board of Directors regarding the “abysmal behavior” displayed by “coaches, student-athletes and fans. … With regards to some of the coaching behavior, I suggest that if a member of the faculty behaved in a similar fashion in the classroom or directed such vitriol at a student or another professor, the individual would be facing dismissal.” Steinbrecher goes on to ask: “Do we really need to contemplate the creation of a rule expressly prohibiting flag planting on an opposing team’s field (I understand why it has been suggested), as opposed to simply knowing that is wrong? If so, we have reached a tipping point requiring a reset before someone gets hurt (given pepper spray was recently used on a field to break up a melee, that time has probably passed). From my seat, this is not about establishing new rules but in clarifying and redefining individual and collective expectations for the conduct of intercollegiate athletics competition and holding ourselves accountable.” Full letter. Learfield plans to announce the Performance Partner Alliance initiative to help deliver a jersey patch solution for its schools, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who observes: “Jersey patches are not only, for now, against NCAA rules, but apparel partners such as Nike, Adidas and Under Armour have existing contracts with schools that prohibit other branding on jerseys and uniforms. It’s an untapped source of revenue at a financially stressful time for athletic departments moving into the age of athlete revenue sharing. Learfield’s new alliance program is intended to provide apparel brands with significant enough value that they enable schools to add sponsorship logos to game and practice jerseys. Uniforms would continue to feature official apparel logos and conference logos as well.” Learfield CEO Cole Gahagan: “We’ve been at stagnation with arguably one of the most valuable aspects of college athletics — jersey patches. There is seemingly little to nothing anyone can do to actually get it moving. Activity has to start somewhere. We’ve got a responsibility to kick off that activity. The (apparel) performance partners are the first groups that you have to address. The NCAA is the other partner that must agree to this.” Learfield’s estimates for jersey patch values range from as little as $500K annually for schools to as much as $12M, according to Gahagan, who adds: “This is all in the effort for the brands to feel as though the value is significant and worthy of getting on board with jersey patches.” (link)

The Athletic’s Matt Baker and Bruce Feldman examine Florida State’s disappointing football season, noting that the “descent is even more striking because there’s no obvious, extenuating cause. There’s no scandal to cite, no major unlucky breaks to blame. The coaching staff that won last year’s ACC championship with a third-string quarterback is the same one that lost to Duke for the first time in program history. Instead, Florida State crumbled because of a combination of lingering issues that collected slowly and converged suddenly, according to interviews conducted by The Athletic with a dozen people in and around the program and across the sport.” One person familiar with the team’s decision-making process says: “If this is a tailspin that started at 40,000 feet, you’ve had numerous opportunities to recover from it.” Baker and Feldman note that part of the problem can be traced back to subpar recruiting classes in 2021 and 2022. Those two classes were responsible for only seven regular starters this season. Of the 15 blue-chip (four- or five-star) prospects FSU signed those cycles, just five were still on the roster. Furthermore, they point out that “in the five years before Norvell’s arrival, FSU signed nine five-star recruits. In Norvell’s first five classes, he signed one.” One source tells them there is an “institutional lack of appreciation of the importance high school recruiting plays.” Therefore, FSU has relied heavily on transfers, and “if Seminoles staffers thought they could fix the talented prospects they unsuccessfully recruited previously, they were wrong. Bama’s backups, it turns out, were backups for a reason; the front office, a former staffer said, “went 1-for-17.” Seminoles AD Michael Alford says this season was the “most extreme example of what a lot of programs are experiencing, especially in this volatile, competitive landscape,” adding: “We can never take success for granted. I have hope for the future, because this is Florida State.” Lots more. (link)

ESPN platforms experienced record-breaking college football viewership in 2024, with ABC finishing the season as the No. 1 network for college football, averaging 5.8M viewers for 46 regular season games, good for a 56% YoY uptick. ESPN platforms also experienced their most-watched season since 2016 with an average of 1.9M viewers per game across all Nielsen-rated networks (ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU) – a 19% increase YoY. Meanwhile, SEC on ABC games averaged 6.4M viewers, with the top SEC on ABC game each Saturday averaging 7.9M viewers. + CLC sent a survey to schools in September to gather input on their current in-game assets in College Football 25 and what they’d like to see updated or added for College Football 26, according to Extra Points publisher Matt Brown. Specific questions included whether there have been or will be changes to stadiums and fields – including video boards and sponsorships – uniforms, mascots, marching bands and more. Brown adds: “Unlike last year, EA specifically asked schools to list any ‘former players or legends’ they would want to see depicted in the game. Not every former college football player’s IP is covered under any NFLPA licensing program (such as players who never played professional football), so their likenesses would need to be secured individually. This is possible, but time-consuming, so perhaps this tool could help in those efforts, which would add depth to the game’s Ultimate Team modes and elsewhere. EA also asked schools for their preferred hashtag, and if there are any logos they are no longer using.” While not all requested assets are guaranteed to make the game, Brown notes: “I would look at this survey as both an admission that EA has room to improve with team-specific realism and presentation, and a hint that they are at least considering more expansive ways to depict each school (hmmm, I wonder why EA would want every school’s official athletic hashtag?).” (link)
