In September of 2021, Colorado AD Rick George signed a five-year deal that runs through June 30, 2026. In the summer of 2023, George said he didn’t see himself working beyond that timeline. When asked this week about the timeline of his retirement, George offered: “I’m contemplating that. I’m not ready to say, ‘OK, I’ll definitely be done in two years. … Talking with the family and all that, it’s fun to win again and I like what coach [Deion Sanders] is doing. We have a good relationship and he’s great to work with, so that’s a factor for sure. I think coach and I from the start have had a really good relationship and it seems to get better and better as we go.” (link)

Arizona State AD Graham Rossini estimated the operational budget for football — the travel, food and technological aspects — saw a 45% increase this season. “As we earn ticket revenue or find new corporate partnerships or increase our donor base, all those are dollars that in real-time we’re feeding back into the operation. … We’ve definitely noticed an uptick in everything. Donor engagement, new people coming to the table, NIL support, new corporate partners and that’s important. The cost of doing business in college sports is changing. That’s been very well-documented. But we want to build the kind of experience that people want to be a part of.” (link)

Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock provides updates from Blacksburg, including how the Hokies plan to operate in a post-House case settlement world: “We will be able to share that $20.5 million. Any new scholarships that are added up to $2.5 million count against the cap. We will add approximately 40-45 new scholarships at Virginia Tech across a number of sports, including football. If you offer your student-athletes Alston awards or academic incentives, those also count against the cap up to $2.5 million, and then the revenue share payments count against the cap too, obviously. For us, on the revenue share component, we will primarily focus on three sports: football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball. And then with our Olympic sports, our investment will primarily be in the form of additional scholarships. [...] Quite frankly, we have pieced it together for Year 1, and when I say Year 1, that would be July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026. We’ve used some one-time funds, we’ve gotten some assistance from campus, we’re ready to go. The challenge will be, and what we’re working on all the time as well, is how do we make it sustainable? Twenty million dollars, we don’t just have that laying around. Again, we can put it together for this first year, and now we’re working on how we partner with campus, what we can do internally to generate more money, how we can get leaner. We even have folks working with state government, not for state funds, but to make it a little easier for us to help ourselves. [...] If this was Corporate America, they’d probably have tremendous layoffs, tremendous cuts. Thankfully, we’re not. We will have to get leaner, but it is an ongoing, productive conversation with a lot of people figuring out how to make this sustainable, how to position Virginia Tech at the top and where we want to be, and hopefully all of this salary cap and NIL transparency will level the playing field a little bit.” Babacock also notes that Virginia Tech alums who are working in front offices across pro sports - namely Tampa Bay Rays President of Baseball Operations Erik Neander & Chicago Bears Senior Director of Player Personnel Jeff King - will be assisting the Hokies in making sense of revenue share opportunities & challenges. Former Milwaukee Bucks co-owner & current Avenue Capital Group CEO Mark Lasry says he’s actively been trying to acquire college football & basketball programs: “We’re bidding on a couple of teams. I can’t tell you. But in essence what we would do is buy 51% of the team and if you look at a bunch of these programs they’re making fifty to one hundred million off their football program, off of their basketball program, so it’s a way for universities to - they’ll say, ‘My football program makes one hundred million, we’ll sell 50% for fifty million, do a ten multiple or a fifteen multiple on that, so that’s five-hundred to seven-hundred fifty million.’ - that will come for them to sort of fix different things at the university. So you’re going to start to see more of that. What the schools need is they need money for NIL, but you can’t go out and raise money for NIL because that’s not a deduction. So that’s the issue.” (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey continues to press for his league’s access to the upcoming College Football Playoff: “The reaction to the rankings about brands, I would ask people on the outside who comment about brands, ‘Are you watching the football games?’ I know the committee is. The committee engages in really in depth analysis. I could make the case we have two other teams that merit that type of consideration compared to some others who are in from outside our conference, but the committee makes that decision. We’ve entrusted them with that. The thing this year is we’ve moved from discussing four to bringing in more and that’s part of the health of what can happen through this format.” More with the SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum. (link)

Despite the fact that four other cities - Houston, St. Louis, Kansas City and Nashville - are bidding to host the FCS title game for a year or two while Frisco’s Toyota Stadium undergoes a massive renovation, the city of Frisco is fighting to keep the event during construction. Team Frisco Committee Chair John Wagner: “We have told the NCAA we will work with you, we will find a solution that will allow us to keep the game here in Frisco. We believe that would be the best thing. You have continuity. You have people who have been working on the game for 14 years. You have the Dallas-area geography being centrally located. This is the home of the FCS championship game and we’d like to continue for the two years when the stadium is being renovated and for a long time after that.” The current contract expires following the 2028 edition of the game. Lots more. (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel & On3’s Pete Nakos update on the contract discussions at Oklahoma State with Football HC Mike Gundy. Thamel: “The Cowboys have asked Gundy to take a restructured contract that will include a significant pay cut, according to sources. Gundy had meetings with Oklahoma State officials to discuss his future Friday, sources said. Also included in Oklahoma State's request to Gundy, according to sources, is a significant drop in his buyout, which is currently near $25 million. Gundy is under contract through 2028. There has been discussion about firing Gundy for cause if he doesn't agree to the new contract, sources said. It's unclear what Gundy might have done to potentially be fired for cause.” Nakos adds: “A source tells @On3sports that Oklahoma State offered Mike Gundy a reduced contract that would come with assurances he would go all-in on NIL. The dollars saved on his contract would be put towards NIL/revenue sharing. If Gundy does not agree, Oklahoma State will terminate his existing deal and launch a head coaching search.” (link, link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake reports on how Washington State & Oregon State will attempt to keep pace with NIL funding: “One ‘P4’ athletic director told me in the current NIL environment, it will take a minimum of $3 million to $5 million annually to compete for a spot in the Top 25 and give your school a puncher’s chance at the playoff.” The Oregon State-affiliated Dam Collective plans to focus on retention of the current roster with some new talent acquisition sprinkled in. As for the Cougars, Football HC Jake Dickert’s philosophy is “it’s better to have loved and lost…” on talent as some key contributors may exit Pullman like former WSU standout & current Miami (FL) quarterback Cam Ward did last year. As for an expansion update for the conference, per a source: “I expect one (addition) because the idea of more than one could be additional mouths to feed.” (link)

The Big West files a slew of updates from its recent Board of Directors meeting: “The board was briefed on a significant research project undertaken by The Big West in collaboration with the Pictor Group. The project focused on overall positioning of The Big West within NCAA Division I and a strategic direction for maximizing the unique opportunities available to the conference as a result the preliminarily approved NCAA settlement and western conference realignment. [...] The Board approved the addition of the University of Hawai`i as an affiliate member of The Big West in the sports of men’s volleyball, women’s water polo, beach volleyball and men’s swimming & diving beginning with the 2026-27 competitive seasons.” (link)

The UConn Board of Trustees recently approved a planning budget to launch Wi-Fi improvements at Gampel Pavilion and conduct a market survey to assess the demand for premium seating in the venue. The review will also identify ways to add and expand revenue-creating opportunities inside the arena. Wireless connectivity improvements are expected to be in place by mid-January. Separately, the school unveiled other upgrades at Gampel, including new videoboards that are seven times larger than the previous displays, a state-of-the-art lighting system, and graphics celebrating UConn's basketball history. Duke Senior Assoc. AD of the Iron Duke Annual Fund Jack Winters sent a note to men's basketball season ticket holders after the Blue Devils home win over Auburn on Wednesday. It read, in part: “... I’m reaching out to you as a season ticket holder because, in addition to overcoming the Auburn Tigers on the court, our team also had to silence an overly large group of Tiger fans in the stands. The atmosphere we experienced last night is neither typical nor acceptable for Cameron Indoor Stadium. We need the full support of all season ticket holders to ensure this doesn’t occur again. I want to remind everyone that reselling Duke Athletics tickets for profit violates Duke’s policy. … Thank you in advance for your assistance in making sure Cameron Indoor Stadium is always ALL Duke Blue!” (link)

As leaders throughout the industry consider whether the College Football Playoff selection process should be tweaked, former Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby tells Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger: “My personal opinion is we come out with the rankings too early. Doing it every week is hard on the chair and the committee. Two polls, one midseason and one at the end, would be better. But ESPN would flip out.” Former CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock is in favor of maintaining the human element in the process, telling Dellenger: “It works in every other NCAA championship. This one shouldn’t be any different. Each one of those committees receives criticism from the teams that barely miss the field. … When we went from four to 12, conventional wisdom is that it would be easier for the committee. But we on the inside knew that wouldn’t be true. In fact, it’s more difficult.” Dellenger also notes that former Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick, in creating the selection committee, noted: “No one wanted to live through the computer era again. It was more reputation than reality but no one wanted to go back to that.” Bowlsby goes on to say: “It’s difficult to insulate yourself from allegations of bias. Everybody comes from some place. You are a product of your history and judgements and vantage points. Somebody is going to be left out.” (link)

After last September’s recapitalization, Learfield has since seen record financial growth the past year, reporting $1.2B in gross revenue, though the company’s debt remains more than $500M, according to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, who adds: “It is, however, notably carrying debt ratios closer to 3.5-4 times its EBITDA, [CEO Cole] Gahagan told Sports Business Journal, compared to the 30 times its earnings it hovered around in mid-2022.” Gahagan: “Our objective is super simple: To continue operating and growing the company successfully that allows us to create more free cash flow that can go toward continuing to pay down that debt and lowering that ratio.” Gahagan also says Learfield has made a conscious effort to become more of a media and technology company, and Portnoy notes: Learfield Studios “saw a 20% year-over-year growth in revenue among Power 4 schools.” Moving forward, Gahagan says Learfield has no plans to offload assets, though what the company’s new majority ownership of Clearlake Capital Group, Charlesbank Capital Partners and funds managed by Fortress Investment Group might do long term is unclear. One source tells Portnoy: “They and the other traditional rights owners are going to face way more scrutiny. The rapid increase in commercialization is good, but how much are you going to get to keep? … When you’ve got $1.2B, $500-and-some million in debt looks great. But $500-some-million in debt, you’re still paying a lot of interest before you ever put the first dollar in your pocket.” More. (link)

Freshly minted New Mexico AD Fernando Lovo says he has spoken “extensively” with Men’s Basketball HC Richard Pitino about an alleged fight that took place between two men’s basketball student-athletes on a flight to a Thanksgiving tournament in California. Lovo adds: “And as you know, it was reported yesterday. You know, the university, we’re following all of our policies and procedures, both student and student athlete code of conduct. While that process is ongoing, you know, I can’t comment any further, but that’s where that’s at. … These things, they happen. So again, I’m trying to learn as much as I can and try to rely on my team that has been here for a long time. And so, you know, like I said, these things happen, and as the process continues, we’ll see how it plays out.” As for the fight itself, attorney David Adams says his client, Shane Douma-Sanchez, is the alleged victim; however, an attorney representing the other player, whose name has yet to be released, denies the allegation. Oklahoma State Football HC Mike Gundy is in a “standoff” with the school, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who reports OSU has asked Gundy to take a pay cut as part of a restructured contract but have yet to provide financial details. Meanwhile, The Oklahoman’s Scott Wright reports that The Oklahoma A&M Colleges Board of Regents met for two hours in executive session today to discuss the employment of the football staff, and Board Chair Jimmy Harrel came out of the meeting saying: “We have a plan. As soon as we have it tied down, we’ll inform you of it.” Wright also points out that Gundy’s current buyout is $25.3M. (link, link)

Sportico’s Jason Clinkscales profiles Clemson’s partnership with Everett Sports Marketing (ESM) to create an in-house agency aimed at helping student-athletes navigate NIL opportunities. ESM Co-Founder Dan Everett says ESM’s role with the school marks an expansion of the agency’s mission: “Our foundation is in NFL representation. As NIL presented itself a number of years back, we kind of took the bull by the horns and thought, ‘Well, how else could we approach representation, not just as individuals, but as brands and universities and those with interest in sports?’” In representing schools, Everett says the agency goes from a convention-based model to retainer-based model with the aim of sharing its expertise on procuring deals, managing logos and marks and talent representation. “The university has talent, it has property, it has live (events) and being able to merge all those in a way to drive monetary value for the university itself is really at the forefront of how we’ve approached going to market with this new vertical business.” For Clemson specifically, Everett notes the Tigers, “for the most part, they own their MMR, which is extremely advantageous. That kind of greases the wheels on deal procurement and execution because you have the ability to support and represent the talent at a very high level, and you have the assets in house, and there’s no third party inside of that.” (link)

Ohio State will roll back more than $2M in raises for hundreds of employees that had been set to take effect on January 1. The raises had been granted to compensate for pending changes to the federal overtime rule, which was supposed to make more workers around the country eligible for overtime pay, but the changes were struck down last month by a federal judge. Some employees’ pay rates had already been adjusted to meet the new OT threshold and will “revert to their original salary in January,” per an OSU statement, which adds: “We value our more than 50,000 employees and appreciate their contributions to the university and its mission. All employees remain eligible for annual merit increases, salary adjustments based on market rate, and promotion.” (link)

Disney President of Global Advertising Rita Ferro tells Sportico’s Anthony Crupi that ads for the College Football Playoff are in high demand. “We are very, very well sold. There’s still opportunity, obviously, because a lot of what happens on the advertising side could depend on which teams make it through. There are certain brands that are very affiliated with certain teams and schools, and so we always hold back a piece of the inventory to make sure that we can deliver on those relationships.” Crupi: “For example, if Georgia gets to play in what amounts to its own backyard [in the championship game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium], a wealth of brands are probably going to be kicking the door down for a chance to get in on the action. Georgia athletics has an official soft drink sponsor in local behemoth Coca-Cola, a relationship the school handles directly. The Bulldogs also have an arrangement with IMG, which manages sponsorships for a host of schools; among the national deals that are included under that particular umbrella is a tie-in with Hyundai.” Ferro is consequently “managing the playoff inventory very, very carefully to ensure that we’re leaving opportunities open where we need to, in the event certain teams make it in and their partners want to be part of that bigger conversation.” More.
