The NCAA yesterday sent out a second Q&A related to the House settlement. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger notes the eight-page document is intended to be a starting document with more information to come at a later date. On when schools must be compliant with new roster limits, the NCAA explains: “Beginning in the 2025-26 academic year, for fall sports, schools must be at or below the roster limits prior to the first date of competition that counts for championships selection in the relevant sport. For winter and spring sports, schools must be at or below the roster limits not later than December 1 or the first contest that counts for championships selection in the relevant sport (whichever is earlier).” The document also notes that access to DI championships will not be impacted by a school’s decision to opt into revenue-sharing. Additionally, schools must determine and notify the NCAA by March 1 of each year if they plan to opt in for the following year. Also from the Q&A: “All [NIL] agreements with associated entities and associated individuals with payments occurring after July 1, 2025, will be subject to the fair-market-value assessment contemplated by the settlement. Also, all new agreements with associated entities and associated individuals executed after settlement approval (which could occur any time after April 7, 2025) will be subject to a fair-market-value review. In addition, if there is a challenge to determinations related to fair-market-value, third-party arbitrators approved by the plaintiffs, the defendant conferences and the NCAA will render a decision.” The document also recaps how the initial rev-share pool will be calculated: “The Pool will be set by totaling up eight of the Membership Financial Reporting System Reports (MFRS) revenue categories for each institution from the five defendant conferences and Notre Dame, then dividing the total by the number of institutions from the five defendant conferences plus Notre Dame, then taking 22% of the resulting dollar figure. The defendant conferences’ defendants estimated the 2025-26 cap to be approximately $20.5 MM. The actual cap number will be determined in Q1 of 2025.” (link, link – full document)

New on Connect: Ivy League Executive Director Robin Harris joins Connect's Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss the issues impacting the conference, the league’s top priorities and the prominence of women leaders in the Ivy League. Harris also talks about positioning the Ivy League brand and says she believes the conference provides the best all-around student-athlete experience in DI. “All eight schools are focused on the entire student-athlete experience, allowing them to succeed academically, of course, have time to be students and be involved in other activities on campus and, of course, have an amazing athletic experience as much as they want it to be. And we have student-athletes that go on to professional careers in sports in the NFL, in Major League Baseball, in women's sports, in the WNBA, Olympians – but they also know they have a degree where they can have a career and be successful.” Full Q&A. Big East Deputy Commissioner/COO Vince Nicastro joins the On the Fly podcast and shares his thoughts on expanding March Madness: “I think it’s probably prudent for us as an industry to take a look at the tournament format and [consider] if there is a case to be made for expansion – a very small expansion. … There was some discussion years ago about going to 96, and I certainly would not support that, but if we went from 68 to 72 or even to 76 and created some First Fours to start the tournament, I think that’s worth evaluating. And I think for a conference like ours, it probably would benefit us on balance because I do think we'll have strong enough teams that are getting left out of the tournament or just shy of the tournament that may have access to March Madness. And, as you know, such an inordinate amount of attention is placed on whether you make the tournament or not as a program. You can be a superb basketball coach, have a superb basketball program, and if somehow you don’t get in for a year or two, people look at you differently like you haven’t succeeded. It’s not fair, but I do think expanding a little bit may provide some additional opportunities for schools to enjoy the benefits of being in that great event.” Nicastro also says the Big East has emphasized maintaining the double round robin hoops schedule, something that is increasingly difficult to do as other conferences continue to expand. “We think that’s really important so that those rivalries are either perpetuated or, with the Midwest schools, we’ve started a lot of rivalries between the East and the Midwest. … So, we’re going to hang on to that double round robin as long as we can because we do think it’s unique.” More from Nicastro, who notes Big East schools will be “very proactive and aggressive” when it comes to sharing revenue. As part of a restructuring of its fundraising enterprise, Missouri is “reimagining the Tiger Scholarship Fund as the Mizzou Athletics Fund beginning Jan. 1, 2025.” The Mizzou Athletics Fund will be built on three pillars: Game Day Priority, which provides fans priority access to the seating and parking options they desire; The Mizzou Leadership Circle, which will recognize and steward top donors who give above and beyond seat-related donations, and joining will unlock additional stewardship opportunities such as VIP events, team travel and special access; and The Mizzou Legacy Societies, which will recognize lifetime philanthropic support of Mizzou Athletics. Tigers AD Laird Veatch: "As college athletics prepares to enter the revenue-sharing era, we have been laser-focused on finding ways to elevate Mizzou's position and capitalize on the opportunities in front of us. As part of our fundraising restructuring efforts, renaming the Tiger Scholarship Fund the Mizzou Athletics Fund will more accurately reflect how donors already contribute to much more than scholarships. At the same time, we will simplify our giving programs to more clearly align our donor benefits with the contributions that will be so vital to our sustained competitive success." (link)

ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro talks about adding an ESPN+ tile to Disney+: “The idea is to remove a lot of the friction that exists today. We want to be everywhere. We want ESPN+ to be within Hulu like it is today, and we want ESPN+ to be within Disney+ if you’re a subscriber, so it’s actually spot-on connected to our mission, which is to serve the sports fan anytime, anywhere.” In addition to around 100 ESPN+ live events – including college football and basketball games – Disney+ subscribers who aren’t subscribed to ESPN+ will be able to access some studio shows like Pardon the Interruption, College GameDay and ESPN Originals; however, ESPN+ SVP John Lasker says the content available to broader Disney+ subscribers is a “small fraction” of ESPN+ content. “It’s not creating an alternative to ESPN or ESPN+, [but] more an extended reach opportunity.” (link)

MoffettNathanson Co-Founder/Analyst Michael Nathanson joins Puck’s John Ourand on The Varsity podcast to discuss the challenges facing legacy media outlets, how sports leagues and college conferences can thrive post-TV and lots more. Nathanson explains that his firm has set the cable subscription floor to somewhere between 50-60M homes and the question today is whether that floor holds. As such, MoffettNathanson reminds companies who continue to push into streaming to be “more mindful of killing the golden goose. The golden goose is being killed because non-sports fans have realized rightly that it’s more efficient and cheaper to find entertainment choices outside the bundle. Case closed. Simple. So, you’ve gone from 100M to 68M homes simply because people who are not sports fans or people who are younger have chosen to stream. If you’re a sports fan, you stay in the bundle. … In the bundle we have today, sports have never been stronger. If you were a sports rights holder, your position in that bundle is only getting stronger. Look at Fox's results relative to AMC, which has no sports rights. Fox has been able to grow ad share, grow affiliate fees, they're pushing sports all the time. If you’re AMC networks and you have no sports, you're screwed.” As for what this all means for leagues and college conferences, Nathanson explains they may look to “pull their rights from weaker hands” in the next few years if media companies don’t get stronger. However, that likely only applies to the leagues with the strongest national appeal, which, in college, Nathanson explains, means the SEC and Big Ten. “They’re national professional football leagues. … It’s going to be interesting to see – you’ve had RSNs die, the Pac-12 die…again, canary in the coal mine.” Full podcast. President Kim Schatzel: "This is a vote of confidence that I want to be able to provide. … I am happy to take this to the board. The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel reports from behind the scenes at the ACC HQ during Sunday’s College Football Playoff bracket reveal and notes that “many from the ACC worked at Bank of America Stadium until 1, 2, even 3 a.m. Less than eight hours later, they were in the state-of-the-art command center, surrounded by banks of massive television screens, unfazed by the Daily Press’ and Virginian-Pilot’s exclusive access to the proceedings.” Their dedication was rewarded at 12:34 PM when SMU’s red pony appeared on the screen and the room broke into applause and Deputy Commissioner Amy Yakola remarked: “It’s just a game until it becomes your livelihood.” After Clemson was also added to the field, an “ecstatic ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips called in to thank everyone and to receive his final briefing” on the league’s full bowl lineup. “In earlier video calls Sunday morning with outside counsel Alex Steinberg, a former NFL attorney with extensive media experience, and Clint Overby of ESPN Events, which runs 17 bowls, [Senior Assoc. Commissioner for Football Michael] Strickland outlined the ACC’s bowl process and how it would be impacted by the number of teams from the conference that reached the playoff.” From there, much of the focus was the full bowl slate. “At 2:15 p.m., nearly two hours after the playoff reveal, and with the digital and creative team back in the command center awaiting his cue to socialize graphics, Strickland convened the ACC’s official selection video call with bowl directors. First up were the Gator’s Greg McGarity, Holiday’s Mark Neville and Pop-Tarts’ Steve Hogan. Just as Strickland projected, Hogan wanted Miami in Orlando to face Iowa State. No arguments. Done deal. Neville in San Diego preferred Syracuse for its No. 21 CFP ranking and considerable Southern California alumni contingent. McGarity asked for Duke in Jacksonville, but only if the SEC assigned Florida to his game, allowing the Gator to promote a matchup of programs once coached by the legendary Steve Spurrier.” More. Michigan State AD Alan Haller says he’ll let Football HC Jonathan Smith make the call on how many scholarships the Spartans will award next season. “He feels comfortable this first year going with 85 scholarships with a roster limit of 105 (with 20 walk-ons). And then we'll add about a million dollars worth of scholarships (20 to 25 scholarships) to the women's side to really strengthen some of our really successful women's sports over the last couple of years and keep pace with other Big Ten schools. … We’ve looked at adding to women’s soccer, volleyball, women’s basketball, gymnastics, maybe a couple of others. We’re not looking at it, we are adding scholarships there. You’ve got to remember that every additional scholarship you add takes down the rev share. So it's either rev share or scholarships, and what does a particular sport need. Some benefit more from actual dollars going to student-athletes. Some just need more numbers (in scholarships) to be successful.” That said, Haller notes there is “nothing that we're going to do from a rev-share dollar, whether that's adding scholarships or giving (money) to other sports, that's going to reduce the number we're going to give to football. That number is set.” Haller declines to reveal football’s exact rev-share number other than to say: “We are going to be very competitive as it relates to an investment in football.” Haller goes on to say he has a “really, really good relationship with the Big Ten office,” adding: “I get the perception that we're bending over backwards for the night games and the Ford Field thing. I get that. That is not the reality. It's not. I'm not going to allow that to happen. I've got to represent Michigan State in a way that is professional, but is understanding within the conference office that our voice at the table matters. But I'm not going to do anything foolish where I'm throwing a bunch of threats that I can't back up.” Full Q&A. (link)

Army West Point and Navy have agreed to a 10-year extension to continue broadcasting the Army-Navy football game on CBS through 2038. CBS Sports President/CEO David Berson: "CBS Sports is immensely proud of our decades-long association with the Army-Navy football game and our partnerships with the US Military and US Naval Academies. America's Game is special and has always been about more than football. We are privileged to document the extraordinary stories of the cadets and midshipmen on and off the field and will continue to celebrate the traditions and history of this great game while highlighting these venerated service academies for years to come." SBJ’s Ben Portnoy examines the business side of the Army-Navy game and notes that in 2007, Navy Senior Assoc. AD of Corporate Sales Jon Starrett was tasked with helping to secure a presenting sponsor for the game; however, there was a catch: neither school was interested in changing the name of the game. Starrett: “There was no desire to just march up and down Madison Avenue to make this game available to someone. We were very careful with who we targeted, and we spoke to folks for over an 18-month period until we finalized the deal.” The academies ultimately wound up partnering with USAA, whose Chief Marketing Officer, Francesco Lagutaine, says: “I see it as a partnership that us, the academy athletic [departments] and the Army and Navy teams have our own internal standards to be better every year. It’s a great partnership where it’s mutually enriching.” USAA, which has used 160over90 as its brand sponsorship agency of record since 2011, didn’t provide exact financial numbers when asked by Sports Business Journal, but a company spokesperson noted it had seen continuous year-over-year growth in earned media, social engagements and paid media effectiveness over the past 15 years. Army Deputy AD for External Operations Tom Theodorakis adds of sponsorships for the game overall: “When we look at sponsors, there’s three pillars: investment, pre-promotion and on-site activation. The investment piece is important. The Army-Navy game sponsor investment goes directly to the two academies. That funds Army’s 30 sports and Navy’s 36 sports. It’s really pivotal for our sustainability and providing a premium Division I experience for our cadets.” More. (link)

NOCAP Sports, Exos and a yet-to-be-announced production company will launch the Athlete Showcase, an “NFL Combine-style event that will connect 50-75 elite transfer portal football players, agents and NIL collectives over the course of three days in Dallas,” according to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, who notes the event, which is set to take place Jan. 5-7, will include an “on-field workout portion, followed by meetings between stakeholders from across the country during a two-day ‘Athlete Marketing Expo’ at a nearby hotel.” The Collective Association will also be part of the showcase. NOCAP Co-Founder/CEO Nick Lord: “This is an opportunity to put athletes, coaches, collectives and brands all in the same room, in the same place to basically create a physical manifestation of the transfer portal that's, to date, been entirely digital. … This is just a natural progression of business [for NOCAP]. Our core business is helping brands invest across college sports. This is creating a new platform for brands to invest in.” (link)
