Former Big 12 Commissioner Bowlsby sounded off on the state of college athletics from the CAA World Congress of Sports yesterday, noting there aren’t many people talking about the downside of student-athletes being designated as employees. “You can be traded. You can be fired. They don't necessarily have to pay for your school. There are a lot of downsides to a pretty good environment that student athletes have today that they might not have in a new day. … When you combine the transfer portal with name, image and likeness, it's making athletic directors crazy. It's making coaches crazy. It's making commissioners crazy. And there's a part of me that is real broken-hearted to be on the outside watching. But having said that, I think the athletic space will find its equilibrium. It'll be a different normal than what we have now, but it's an extraordinarily resilient environment.” (link)

The California Assembly Higher Education Committee has approved a bill that includes the opportunity for revenue sharing for college athletes, per USA Today’s Berkowitz, who notes the bill will now be sent to the Appropriations Committee, the chair of which sponsored the legislation. Both former New Mexico track & field student-athlete Spencer and USC Deputy Chief of Staff Adams testified in opposition to the bill, with Spencer contending that support for Olympic sports would be “crushed.” The final vote was 8-3 with one abstention. Kentucky AD Barnhart talks about the $82M renovation of Memorial Coliseum, home of the Wildcats’ women’s basketball, gymnastics and volleyball teams, pointing to The Palestra as an example of an arena that has undergone a similar transformation. “They took an iconic facility that was really struggling and they went and renovated it and made it very, very special. That’s a similar concept to what we’ve got going on here – an iconic building here on our campus that’s probably got the most history of any building on our campus and rebranding it and bringing it back to life.” (link); UK has also officially announced Rupp Arena will serve as the main venue for its indoor sports while Memorial Coliseum is being upgraded with a primary home for the STUNT team set to be announced soon. D1.ticker/Connect’s Eargle chats with Ole Miss Associate Director of Marketing and Fan Experience Smith about the growth of Women’s Basketball in Oxford, including what the Rebels are seeing in terms of social media, ticket sales, marketing and recruiting. Smith explains that “utilizing Coach Yo is one of our biggest things that always seems to work, so we keep using campaigns with her, individual ticket sales campaigns, season ticket campaigns, and I think keeping it going with having that value, I think that was huge for us. We’ve been very conscious of not just handing out free tickets to every group in town.” As of now, there is no plan to restructure the ticketing system, as Smith notes that “I think our biggest thing was our fans have become accustomed to how we do things, what the price points are, and the last thing we’d ever want to do is price fans out of coming to women’s basketball. I think that’s one of the best things about women’s basketball right now is it’s something that families can afford.” Full Q&A. (link)

On3’s Prisbell talks with Teamworks Founder/CEO Maurides, who says the acquisition of ARMS will allow the company to “go deeper in the early stages [of an athlete lifecycle] and then have a more complete solution in the later stages. … When you look at the areas where each company is really strong, it’s incredibly complementary.” Meanwhile, Dragoneer Investment Group Partner Jensen, whose firm led Teamworks’ recent $65M Series E fundraising round, says the firm was particularly excited about Teamworks’ vision for an integrated platform that will “fundamentally transform how sports and military organizations operate to support their athletes, service members and staff.” More from Prisbell. ProMondo Sports CEO Bollero, who has represented Texas A&M men’s golf student-athlete Bennett, says he expects Bennett to turn pro, possibly as soon as June 1 in time for The Memorial. If/when he does, Bollero explains his sponsorship slate will be wiped clean, paving the way for more lucrative multi year deals. “One of the real benefits of NIL is that it provides you with a peek behind the curtain on how things work. Now these companies have a better understanding of the opportunity that’s going to be there when the player turns pro, especially in golf, where the player is actually wearing the company’s logo. The savvy companies are using this time to really get to know the student athlete while it’s at the NIL stage.” More from SBJ’s Smith. (link)

Kansas State’s success in Football and Men’s Basketball this year will come at a cost, Wildcats AD Taylor acknowledges, telling The Wichita Eagle’s Robinett: “The market has changed. Successful coaches that win Big 12 championships and get to the Elite Eight need to be compensated in a fair market within reason. How do we come up with that extra money? Let’s just say it keeps my CFO awake at night.” Taylor goes on to note that “most of our donors really understand the situation. Some of them are still paying off their facility gifts and they have said when that’s done they will look to donate more to the Ahearn Fund. They also ask where do we need their dollars. Do we need help with NIL or help with operational dollars? The answer is both. Most of them understand and have found ways to help us.” (link)

BYU AD Holmoe addresses fans’ concerns over Football season ticket prices and seat changes, writing in a letter: “With our ticket base expanding, we knew there would be some growing pains. We realize this has meant that some have been displaced from previous seats and some have been priced out of season tickets. But we have been able to provide all active Cougar Club members who opted in to buy season tickets the opportunity to buy tickets this season. We ask for your patience and understanding through this process. The fact is that the demand is outpacing the supply for season tickets available. While we understand the frustration from some about what it means for them, overall, this is a very good thing and a very good sign of the health of our program.” Holmoe goes on to say these changes are necessary because “need strong, better and new revenue generation processes” and notes fans can expect a similar process for basketball. NLRB General Counsel Abruzzo joins Tulane Sports Law Director Feldman to discuss the potential unionization of college athletes and says she’s confident the board will ultimately agree with her that college athletes are statutory employees. “Under the common law test, the definition of employees is one who performs services for an institution and that institution has the right to control significant aspects of that individual’s daily life. And as a statutory employee, you have the full protection of the National Labor Relations Act. … If you're classified as an employee, great. We will protect you if you are somehow retaliated against for acting together to improve your circumstances. If you are not an employee, you have none of those protections. So, it’s critical that players and other workers, frankly, are not misclassified as something other than employees.” Lots more in the way of legal details. (link)

Texas lawmakers are pondering a bill similar to that of their northern neighbors in Oklahoma that would provide schools cover and keep the NCAA from penalizing an “athletic association, an athletic conference, or any other group or organization with authority over an intercollegiate athletic program” for NIL-related matters. + New Wisconsin Men’s Hockey HC Hastings will earn a 30% bonus if the Badgers win the national championship. That figure is double the 15% other Badgers HCs are eligible for per the athletic department’s policy. In total, Hastings would be in line for a $150K bonus should UW win a title. If the Badgers go to the Frozen Four but lose in the semifinals, UW is adding 5% to the 10% bonus that's in the policy for a total of 15%, or $75K. The bonus is 25% ($125K) if UW wins the semifinal but loses the championship game. The buyout to be paid to the other side if either UW or Hastings breaks the contract early is the same. If it takes place before the final regular-season game of the 2026-27 season, it's the greater of the remaining salary amount on the contract for the first four seasons (an amount that scales down from the starting point of $2.95M) or $1M. It's $1M if it takes place after that point. (link)

On3’s Zenitz catches up with recruiting personnel to collect their thoughts on the new rule which removes limits on the number of official visits recruits can take, and the overall consensus is, in a word: not-awesome-not-awesome-at-all. An SEC staffer says: “I hate it. I think every single person in college football that I’ve talked to hates it. Now that kids have unlimited visits, who’s to know what school this kid is really interested in? … And then also, at the end of the day, they never expanded the number of official visits for the school. So we still have 56 official visits. So if we run out of those official visits, we’re screwed. So we still need to be calculated on who we bring in.” A Big Ten staffer adds: “It’s a ridiculous rule. And it further shows that there’s nobody who works in football that sits on these committees. It’s all compliance people. … I think if you surveyed 100 people, 99 would say the rule is stupid. … Somebody needs to have a voice outside of just compliance people who don’t know what they’re doing.” More. Buffalo Bills safety Hamlin has been cleared to return to football activities and says his plans to return to the NFL. Bills GM Beane: “It’s not 2-to-1 or 3-to-1 or anything like that. [The medical professionals are] all in lockstep of what this was and that he is cleared (to) resume full activities just like anyone else who was coming back from an injury or whatever. So he’s been cleared. He’s here, and he is of the mindset, he’s in a great headspace to come back and make his return.” (link)

The NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement states that beginning in 2024, all players invited to the draft will be required to participate in the combine. That will include “medical examinations, sharing of medical history and biomechanical and functional movement testing, as well as strength and agility testing, shooting drills, performance testing and anthropometric measurements,” according to ESPN’s Givony, who points out that agents have in the past strategized to keep medical records away from “less attractive” franchises in the hopes of steering their clients to more desirable teams. “There will be limits on sharing medical information among teams based on the projected draft range of top players. For example, the projected No. 1 pick will have his medical information shared only with teams picking in the top 10. … The NBA and NBPA will agree upon a method to rank the top-10 prospects before the NBA draft lottery, using a blend of publicly available rankings, an appointed panel of experts and a retained-scouting service.” More from Givony.
