#5: Northland AD Dan Schumacher sits down with D3.ticker’s Kristen Eargle to dive into the challenges facing the college over the last year and its impact on athletics. The uncertainty and wait to reach a solid plan forward led to NC losing all but one Men’s Soccer student-athlete and almost all Softball and Women’s Soccer student-athletes, including a number of coaches and recruiting classes. Schumacher’s new approach to hire coaches focuses on hiring “local, regionally, an alumnus, ties to Ashland, Wisconsin or the region itself … I feel that's the best way to create stability so that we can build upon the roster sizes which in the end supports the enrollment management piece.” Schumacher hopes to begin work on a new strategic plan next spring with a focus on helping grow enrollment through athletics, as he specifically mentions the addition of Men’s and Women’s Wrestling and Football once necessary funding is secured. “Once I know that we're going to get there and we're going to meet the enrollment goals of the existing rosters, then we could start to talk about longterm. As I've been telling people, we’ve got to get the quantity and then we can work the quality.” Schumacher’s advice to other ADs going through similar situations: “Patience is a huge piece in something like this because if you show panic as the leader, if you show you're uncertain, that's going to creep into the rest of the the department and the coaches will talk and the athletes will talk. My job is to keep everybody calm and to assure them that there is a plan, that I'm going to help lead them the best they could possibly be led and we'll get through this. You just have to have some trust and patience.” In supporting student-athletes, Schumacher held town halls with all student-athletes weekly, which “allowed us to save a lot of relationships and saved enrollment to a certain extent. I will continue to do that as I've been doing this fall – meeting with each individual teams, weekly meetings with the head coaches, constant communication and be an open book about it because as soon as you get caught not being transparent, all trust goes out the window and this is not a time to lose trust.” Tons more on BOSCA. #1: In the D3FB Huddle’s Frank Rossi updates on his report of Keystone’s potential closure. “I want to be clear that the sourcing is now broadly based, including from inside the school, with several people outside the school having been made aware of a decision to close (including the teach-out schools that would receive Keystone students). The reason I won’t retract the earlier post is because it appears clear that a decision to close was being conveyed by the school, with details as minute as the potential waiver of final exams being provided and how conferences would handle scheduling as a result in winter sports and beyond. However, we were told by someone inside the school that something ‘new’ was brought to the table at some point today. While it is unlikely that it would be a partner school at this late point, it might be some sort of financial assistance to help keep the school open through the semester. […] the sourcing we received was more than mere conjecture, and the situation today appears to be in some way very fluid.” (link, link); KC Football HC Justin Higgins and others have refuted reporting the school’s closure, stating no decision has been made.
