Navigate Head of Ownership & C-Suite Strategy Marina Carpenter and Senior Manager for Consulting Tatu Tiililä offer three options for athletic departments looking to find $20M for revenue-sharing, including internal optimization, traditional financing and private equity partnerships. For those seeking outside funding, the question they must answer is whether control or capital is the more immediate priority. If the answer is control, they advise seeking traditional financing. If the answer is capital, they advise exploring private equity but note it is “critical you select a partner and a deal that fit with your situation and goal.” In either case, the funds should be used for high-growth revenue opportunities, including facility enhancements, roster additions, pro-style sales groups, mixed-use real estate developments, buying and distributing content and creating new sponsorable assets, among others. For programs that decide against seeking outside capital, the focus should be on “internal efficiency and self-financed opportunities. This approach emphasizes low-risk projects that yield measurable ROI,” including spending reductions, recruiting differently, avoiding contract buyouts and positioning athletics as a powerful marketing asset. “Decision-makers must leverage strategic thinking to embrace a results-oriented approach. Whether through private equity, traditional financing, or internal optimization, the focus must remain on high-ROI initiatives that ensure long-term sustainability and allow you to continue providing a world-class experience for athletes, fans, and stakeholders alike.” (link)

Details on the Virginia Women’s Basketball gift from Seven Seven Six founder Alexis Ohanian includes, appropriately, $776K for the Cavs in each of the next four years. It’s the largest gift in program history. Context from Sportico: “Virginia reported $214,000 in women’s basketball ticket sales in 2022-23, according to numbers from Sportico‘s college finance database. Ohanian’s total donation is nearly 15x the team’s annual ticket haul.” (link)

Legal Matters…
+ The FBI has arrested & charged Eugene Toriko CEO Maurice Eugene Smith in connection to the failed George Mason Men’s Basketball trip to the Bahamas earlier this year. Per Sportico: “Instead of using the money ($159,756) to secure accommodations and flights for the Patriots, Smith is accused of using at least some of it to fund his own getaways to Mexico and Panama. He is facing a maximum of 20 years in prison if convicted of wire fraud.” (link)
+ From Law360: “Former University of Michigan football players are seeking more than $50 million from the NCAA and Big Ten Network asked a judge to certify their proposed student-athlete class on Thursday, while noting it was ‘admittedly early’ in the case to do so.” I’m sure we’ll learn more about this development in the coming days. (link)
+ Also from Law360, Utah State has “dropped its intervening complaint in a lawsuit against the Mountain West that sought to stop a transgender athlete from participating in a now-finished volleyball tournament.” (link)

The Athletic’s Ralph Russo chronicles the Football HC changes at Southern Miss and Marshall, noting that less than 24 hours later the Thundering Herd secured the Sun Belt championship, Southern Miss announces Herd HC Charles Huff was its new coach. “Five minutes after that, Marshall [AD] Christian Spears posted a statement thanking Huff for his service and wishing him well. Seventeen minutes after that, Marshall announced it was hiring NC State defensive coordinator and West Virginia native Tony Gibson as its new coach. Until Bill Belichick accepted the North Carolina job on Wednesday, the most fascinating coaching move of the month took place in the Sun Belt, where the coach of the newly crowned conference champion is now leading the only team to go winless in the league this season.” Spears tells Russo: “It was a little bit unique, obviously, the scenario that we just found ourselves in, but it looks like a win-win-win for everyone. … Would it have been nice to celebrate a championship together in a way that really honored what we all did? Absolutely. But what we did is put our program in position to understand what it means to win a championship. Right-sized it financially to compete. Provided our coach (a chance to get) a great opportunity for himself and allowed us to go recruit someone who we think can continue what we’ve built.” Russo, meanwhile, observes that “Huff and Marshall had been heading for a divorce for months, as the school took the highly unusual approach of allowing him to coach out the final year of his contract without an extension.” And, due to a contract stipulation requiring Huff to inform the university of any conversations he had about jobs with other schools, Spears was not surprised by the decision to part ways. “He’s always been a coach-in-waiting kind of a thing, and good for him. I’ve had a chance to follow his opportunities over the last 33 months.” Lots more. (link); Huff made $755K this past season at Marshall, the second-lowest in the league - ahead of only Louisiana Monroe’s Bryant Vincent ($600K). His new four-year, $950K deal at Southern Miss is likely to land him third on the pay scale, behind only Texas State HC GJ Kinne and Coastal Carolina HC Tim Beck, both of whom make $1M+. Huff has been allotted $1.75M to assemble his staff, with an additional $600K for his support staff. If the university were to fire him without cause, Huff would be due 100% of the total remaining annual compensation. In the event Huff were to leave before March 1, 2025 he would owe $2M, a number that decreases to $1M if he left before December 8, 2025, and then drops by $250K each subsequent year until reaching $0 owed if he left before the final regular season game of the 2029 season. Lots more on bonuses and incentives. (link)

The Big Ten went through 130 iterations to get to its 2025 conference slate, and COO Kerry Kenny tells The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman: “We sat in a conference room for about three hours, and we went team by team, week by week, and said, ‘All right, what do we like about this? What do we think needs to be tweaked? And if it needs to be tweaked, what’s the impact downstream on some of the other schools that might be impacted by it?’” Dochterman posits that “whether they admit it or not, all league officials monitor their rival conferences’ approaches and adjust accordingly” and notes this season’s Week 5 Georgia-Alabama matchup generated 12M viewers and set the tone for the season. The Big Ten hopes next year’s Oregon at Penn State game on September 27 will be similarly valuable. Kenny: “We like that early just to help drive interest early in the season. It just helps the conference be able to position meaningful games early and to drive a little bit more interest and storylines as you get deeper into the season.” Other marquee matchups were placed strategically in late October/early November in order to give “those teams the chance to build a little bit of a narrative.” Big picture, Kenny says: “I think you have to rely a little bit on the historical competitiveness of certain brands to help make sure that you have an anchor game every week. Maybe that’s a Michigan, a USC, or Ohio State, Penn State. But you also have to maybe look for pockets where this might be a game that, based on how teams kind of ebb and flow historically and more recently, you take a chance on placing it in a window where maybe it does drive a little bit more interest.” (link)

CBS’ Matt Norlander sheds more light on highly touted men’s hoops prospect AJ Dybantsa’s recruitment and notes that despite making his commitment public this week, he signed an NLI with BYU on November 20. “This isn’t sitting well, after the fact, with Alabama and North Carolina. So, how did a program that was in the WCC practically 15 minutes ago wind up landing the No. 1 player in the Class of 2025? Is it about the money? To an extent, yes, but it turns out that BYU, North Carolina and Alabama were all able to meet the asking price, which was approximately $5M, according to sources at schools on Dybantsa's list of finalists. That deal is considered the largest for any college basketball player ever. That NIL deal will come directly from BYU's collective, according to Leonard Armato, Dybantsa's business adviser.” Armato adds: “The money for every [school] was the same. The decision wasn't a money decision as much as it was a culture fit, a decision for the family, basketball, all those things that should be the determining factors. There was a certain money threshold, but once you got to that, it was about 'how comfortable do I feel for me as a basketball player and my family.'" Armato calls Dybantsa’s Red Bull and Nike deals “substantial” but notes that with the Nike contract expiring in June, “he will be a free agent in the footwear market.” More from Norlander. (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Kevin Sweeney profiles how Overtime Elite has helped the company transform from a highlight producer to a high-level hoops academy, and OTE Head of Player Development Corey Frazier says his first question before joining was: “Is this just gonna be a bunch of highlights and people dunking?” OTE Head of Competition Damien Wilkins notes: “I’m constantly listening to people and their gripes about high school basketball development. We try to implement those things here to make it a place that has literally no weaknesses.” Sweeney notes that building OTE into a training academy began with “hiring respected coaches, including Frazier…as well as former college head coaches Kevin Ollie and Dave Leitao. The facility, former Wizards general manager Tommy Sheppard says, is ‘NBA quality’ with three NBA-sized courts, a weight room and advanced technology that tracks every shot players take. And putting young players in an environment where they’re surrounded by other top prospects helps them level up their games and bodies even quicker.” Frazier: “A lot of places, you probably get three or four high-level guys on the team. But to have 30 high-level guys in the building at one time, that’s iron sharpening iron every day. You have your time, you have your workout plan, but you also have, ‘I get to work out with somebody like me or even better than myself every single day.’” Furthermore, Sweeney notes that “without the limitations that many state associations put on high school teams…players can get coached in multiple different settings every day rather than just putting up shots in an empty gym.” More. Grand Canyon has released the following statement concerning the WCC’s recent legal action against the school: “We appreciated the invitation to join the West Coast Conference and were disappointed to learn yesterday, through a WCC social media post, that a lawsuit has been filed against us containing incomplete and incorrect allegations. We understand the disappointment in our decision to ultimately decline the WCC's invitation and we empathize with their circumstances after also losing prominent members such as BYU and Gonzaga recently. GCU was not scheduled to become a member of the WCC until July 1, 2025, and the WCC's claims that GCU has ‘withdrawn’ from the WCC or breached any contractual obligation are inaccurate. We look forward to presenting our case in court. In addition, the WCC's statement yesterday also inexplicably portrayed GCU as an ‘affiliate’ of Grand Canyon Education. By any definition, characterizing GCU as an affiliate is grossly inaccurate. Grand Canyon Education is an independent education services provider that provides services to GCU and 21 other university partners. Thousands of universities have similar agreements with education service providers. The mention of GCU's agreement with a successful education services provider is both odd and irrelevant to any conference affiliation for the university.” (link)

+ Michigan AD Warde Manuel, Arizona AD Desiree Reed-Francois, Florida State AD Michael Alford, Ole Miss AD Keith Carter, Arizona State AD Graham Rossini and Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey participated in a discussion about post-House changes, and Alford said of revenue generation and private equity: “We need to make sure we’re proactive so that we’re there to compete. [Private equity] is something we've examined for a couple years now and it's something we're still looking at as a possible solution in the future. How are we going to modernize our stadium to get the most available revenue out of it that we can, whether it's events and concerts? Private equity may be a solution to help fund that.” Regarding the new roster limits, Reed-Francois remarked: “This is a learning process, and a massive change and disruption. In hindsight, I would have liked to have seen us get a grace period because there will be juniors that are good enough to be on a team, so why wouldn’t we allow them to finish their eligibility? I don’t love that part of the settlement.” After having two of the six male gymnasts in the Paris Olympics, Michigan wants a nationwide reevaluation of what role Olympic sports – specifically men's gymnastics – will play within athletic departments moving forward, said Manuel. “I think it's time for us to really also think about how Olympic sports are supported across the country. There’s 13 programs left in the country within the collegiate space. It's really problematic that we continue to see a decline in that sport but it’s also an opportunity to have those conversations and engage with the Olympics.” For Boise State, Dickey said the Broncos “have to do things much differently than anyone else. We have to keep taking risks where no one else will. ... So we have to dive into running jersey patches, logos on fields, and run more special events within our facilities. We have proven we can do a lot with a little.” More. (link)
+ Arizona and Arizona State are expected to lose 140 combined roster positions across all programs if the House settlement is approved, according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner. During this week’s SBJ IAF, Sun Devils AD Graham Rossini and Wildcats AD Desiree Reed-Francois said their departments would lose 70 participants, respectively. Wilner emphasizes that figure includes participants, not scholarship athletes. “That’s an important distinction competitively but doesn’t make either athletic director feel better about the situation.” Reed-Francois: “We have to approach the first year of implementation with empathy and grace.” Reed-Francois cited men’s basketball as an example. Currently, teams are allowed 13 scholarship players and however many walk-ons they’d like. UA’s published roster lists 20 players, including Reed-Francois’ son, Jackson, who is a junior guard. Starting next season, the cap will be 15 players, and a result, four spots will be cut from Arizona’s roster. Reed-Francois’ advice to her son, Wilner notes, was: Get better. Michigan AD Warde Manuel, meanwhile, noted the Wolverines will add 74 scholarship positions across their array of sports but lose 170 participants, adding: “This is where we got it wrong.” (link)

The NCAA has awarded Nashville and the Ohio Valley Conference the 2026 and 2027 FCS championship games, which will be played at Vanderbilt’s FirstBank Stadium. The toilets are flushing, the video boards are fully functional and there’s heat where it should be at Beaver Stadium as Penn State prepares to host SMU in the first round of the College Football Playoff. Nittany Lions AD Pat Kraft walked through the stadium with officials from SMU and the CFP as part of the visiting team’s site visit this week and tells The Athletic’s Audrey Snyder that winterizing the stadium last year in preparation for this eventuality is “the best $4.5M we’ve spent in the renovation. Honestly, the Maryland game helped because that was a pretty cold game. We were able to really test the system and we’re in a good spot.” Snyder notes the winterization was “not the most eye-catching part of the renovation, but without it, Penn State might be holding its breath until kick. The school also has extra port-a-potties on hand for next weekend in case something goes wrong, Kraft said.” Meanwhile, there are myriad other logistical challenges associated with hosting a CFP game, and Nittany Lions Deputy AD for Internal Operations Vinnie James says: “There are only two printers in the country that can print 24,000 parking passes so we had to get that order in probably August or September. We’re like well, we’ve gotta do this just in case, and if we don’t end up doing it just don’t put the year on them — just in case.” Despite it being a home game for Penn State, Snyder notes the team won’t be able to treat it like one recruiting-wise. Because the CFP controls ticketing and retains all money from ticket sales, there are no free tickets to distribute to recruits and recruiting guests like there normally would be. More. (link)

North Carolina officially introduced Bill Belichick as its new Football HC today, and the former Patriots HC says he became more invested in college football than he expected due to recent rules changes. "College came to me this year. I didn't go seek it out. Probably a dozen coaches asked to talk with me about certain things, like a salary cap, headsets, two-minute warning, sideline tablets." Belichick went on to say that “I believe we’re going to run a good program and have a good team. We’ll see where that all goes. I’m not making any predictions. I’m just saying I’m coming in to do the best I can.” As for how long he plans to coach, Belichick said he feels like doing it a “long time” and noted the recruiting vision will not only be his, but also GM Michael Lombardi’s. Belichick noted there would be a scouting department involved, with a traditional GM-coach hierarchy that will be similar but "not identical" to the NFL. Asked if he might return to the NFL should a team come calling in a year or two, Belichick replied: “I didn’t come here to leave. Also from Belichick, whose dad was an AC for the Tar Heels: “I’ve always wanted to coach in college football. It just never really worked out. Had some good years in the NFL so that was OK, but this was really a dream come true. I grew up in college football with my dad, who was in it for 50 years. All I knew was college football. It’s great to be back in Carolina, an environment I grew up in.” (link, link); Full press conference. (link); To start the press conference, Tar Heels AD Bubba Cunningham donned a sleeveless suit jacket, an homage to Belichick’s iconic game day look. (link); According to Belichick’s term sheet, he will earn $10M per year for five years with the first three years guaranteed. He will also have a $100K annual expense account, and his bonuses will max out at $3.5M. The deal, per USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz, also includes a $10M AC salary pool, $1M for a strength staff, $5.3M for a support staff, including the GM, and $13M for revenue-sharing. College Football Playoff-related bonuses range from $750K for making it to $1.75M for winning it. Win-based bonuses start at $150K for eight games and go up to $350K for winning 12. For making a non-CFP bowl game, Belichick will receive $150K, but that figure increases to $350K for a non-CFP “elite bowl appearance.” He’s also in line to earn $200K for making the conference championship game and that increases to $300K for winning it. Full term sheet. (link, link)

The partnership also includes NIL opportunities for men’s student-athletes, according to Bonnies GM Adrian Wojnarowski, who says: “Our fans will love the Bonnies-inspired championship title belts, and our student-athletes will be the beneficiaries of the opportunities that come from our alignment with WWE.” Woj also said he’s working on getting an NIL deal for former student-athlete Marques Green this week, who was famously photographed 20 years ago in a uniform that became one of the earliest sports memes. After a mishap with Green’s uniform left him without one, the only available alternative for the 5’6” guard was that of the 7’2” backup center. (link)
