Bloomfield and Montclair State (DIII) have unveiled the athletics plan following the institutions’ merger, subject to NCAA approval. Montclair will transition Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse to club and add Women’s Flag Football this upcoming year for a department of 17 varsity DIII programs, plus “Four Bloomfield programs – men's and women's basketball, men's soccer and softball – will continue to compete at the NCAA Division II level, with Bloomfield maintaining affiliate membership in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). The remaining Bloomfield sports, baseball and women's volleyball, will transition to club status to ensure more access to all students to participate in the sports at a competitive level.” Montclair also has plans to make additional investments into Bloomfield’s successful esports program. MSU AD Rob Chesney: “This new model is an innovative approach to ensuring every student has as many options to participate in athletics as possible. The U.S. Senate voted to not extend Lauren McFerran as NLRB chairman for another five years. Had she been confirmed, Democrats would have controlled a majority of NLRB for the first two years of Donald Trump’s term. The Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty: “But Joe Manchin + Krysten Sinema voted no on McFerran, meaning Trump will nominate someone to fill the vacancy created at the end of the year. That will flip the NLRB to R control. In turn, progress toward college athlete employment w/ the NLRB could really, really slow down.” (link)

UMary announces the development of the James A. Hauer United Printing Golf Performance Center inside the UMary Fieldhouse and Welcome Center. Supported through a lead gift from James Hauer, on behalf of United Printing, the nearly 1K-square-foot center is being developed in two phases, the first of which is set to include an indoor golf simulator with GCQuad Launch Monitor technology from Foresight Sports as well as designated spaces for game and putting practice. Slated for summer 2025, the second phase will add lockers, expand the short-game and putting areas and potentially include a lounge. (link)

The official 2026 NCAA Men's Final Four logo was unveiled Friday, featuring elements and colors that represent Indianapolis and the state of Indiana. Saint Augustine’s Interim President Marcus Burgess is excited about the university’s position “because we have another chance,” as one of the first institutions to go to SACSCOC appeal with new evidence. Asked why the institution submitted its latest audit one day late, “The best outcome for us was, if we were going to be removed again, we wanted to only be because of finance because that gives us an opportunity to go into the February actual hearing to be able to show the evidence that shows that we are now a compliant institution with all standards.” On the real estate deal with 50 Plus 1, Burgess says the deal would help eliminate “almost all of our debt, whether it be with the IRS, Gothic Ventures, we will be taking care of all of our creditors. The two entities are still in the planning stages with respect to what pieces of land will be a part of the deal, which Burgess states could be worth over $1B in revenue. The university and 50 Plus 1 have also been in contact with the City of Raleigh about partnering to assist the city with its affordable housing needs. More. (link)

S&P Global Ratings and Moody’s Ratings last week issued their respective forecasts for higher education in 2025, and both pointed to financial opportunities for some and continued challenges for others. Specifically, S&P indicated the 2025 outlook is negative for what analysts called “highly regional, less-selective institutions that lack financial flexibility” but positive for larger colleges with broad reach, steady demand and ample resources. Moody’s gave the higher education sector a stable outlook as “revenue and expense paths converge,” and the firm’s analysts noted that colleges generally stand to benefit in 2025 from increases in state funding, as well as other revenue sources, such as tuition, donations and income from university healthcare systems. The agency also pointed to slowing inflation as a financial relief valve for the sector. Despite the easing cost pressures, some colleges will continue to struggle to balance their budgets. Moody’s analysts also project that “approximately one-third of private universities and 20% of public universities will continue to have compressed margins and a limited ability to further reduce costs, resulting in operating deficits greater than 2%.” (link)
