Grand Canyon has released the following statement concerning the WCC’s recent legal action against the school: “We appreciated the invitation to join the West Coast Conference and were disappointed to learn yesterday, through a WCC social media post, that a lawsuit has been filed against us containing incomplete and incorrect allegations. We understand the disappointment in our decision to ultimately decline the WCC's invitation and we empathize with their circumstances after also losing prominent members such as BYU and Gonzaga recently. GCU was not scheduled to become a member of the WCC until July 1, 2025, and the WCC's claims that GCU has ‘withdrawn’ from the WCC or breached any contractual obligation are inaccurate. We look forward to presenting our case in court. In addition, the WCC's statement yesterday also inexplicably portrayed GCU as an ‘affiliate’ of Grand Canyon Education. By any definition, characterizing GCU as an affiliate is grossly inaccurate. Grand Canyon Education is an independent education services provider that provides services to GCU and 21 other university partners. Thousands of universities have similar agreements with education service providers. The mention of GCU's agreement with a successful education services provider is both odd and irrelevant to any conference affiliation for the university.” (link)

+ Michigan AD Warde Manuel, Arizona AD Desiree Reed-Francois, Florida State AD Michael Alford, Ole Miss AD Keith Carter, Arizona State AD Graham Rossini and Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey participated in a discussion about post-House changes, and Alford said of revenue generation and private equity: “We need to make sure we’re proactive so that we’re there to compete. [Private equity] is something we've examined for a couple years now and it's something we're still looking at as a possible solution in the future. How are we going to modernize our stadium to get the most available revenue out of it that we can, whether it's events and concerts? Private equity may be a solution to help fund that.” Regarding the new roster limits, Reed-Francois remarked: “This is a learning process, and a massive change and disruption. In hindsight, I would have liked to have seen us get a grace period because there will be juniors that are good enough to be on a team, so why wouldn’t we allow them to finish their eligibility? I don’t love that part of the settlement.” After having two of the six male gymnasts in the Paris Olympics, Michigan wants a nationwide reevaluation of what role Olympic sports – specifically men's gymnastics – will play within athletic departments moving forward, said Manuel. “I think it's time for us to really also think about how Olympic sports are supported across the country. There’s 13 programs left in the country within the collegiate space. It's really problematic that we continue to see a decline in that sport but it’s also an opportunity to have those conversations and engage with the Olympics.” For Boise State, Dickey said the Broncos “have to do things much differently than anyone else. We have to keep taking risks where no one else will. ... So we have to dive into running jersey patches, logos on fields, and run more special events within our facilities. We have proven we can do a lot with a little.” More. (link)
+ Arizona and Arizona State are expected to lose 140 combined roster positions across all programs if the House settlement is approved, according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner. During this week’s SBJ IAF, Sun Devils AD Graham Rossini and Wildcats AD Desiree Reed-Francois said their departments would lose 70 participants, respectively. Wilner emphasizes that figure includes participants, not scholarship athletes. “That’s an important distinction competitively but doesn’t make either athletic director feel better about the situation.” Reed-Francois: “We have to approach the first year of implementation with empathy and grace.” Reed-Francois cited men’s basketball as an example. Currently, teams are allowed 13 scholarship players and however many walk-ons they’d like. UA’s published roster lists 20 players, including Reed-Francois’ son, Jackson, who is a junior guard. Starting next season, the cap will be 15 players, and a result, four spots will be cut from Arizona’s roster. Reed-Francois’ advice to her son, Wilner notes, was: Get better. Michigan AD Warde Manuel, meanwhile, noted the Wolverines will add 74 scholarship positions across their array of sports but lose 170 participants, adding: “This is where we got it wrong.” (link)

The NCAA has awarded Nashville and the Ohio Valley Conference the 2026 and 2027 FCS championship games, which will be played at Vanderbilt’s FirstBank Stadium. North Dakota State AD/FCS Committee Chair Matt Larsen: "We considered a number of finalists, but Nashville set themselves apart. The opportunity to continue to grow the game and our brand in a setting like this is something we know the FCS community as a whole will be excited about." (link)

The toilets are flushing, the video boards are fully functional and there’s heat where it should be at Beaver Stadium as Penn State prepares to host SMU in the first round of the College Football Playoff. Nittany Lions AD Pat Kraft walked through the stadium with officials from SMU and the CFP as part of the visiting team’s site visit this week and tells The Athletic’s Audrey Snyder that winterizing the stadium last year in preparation for this eventuality is “the best $4.5M we’ve spent in the renovation. Honestly, the Maryland game helped because that was a pretty cold game. We were able to really test the system and we’re in a good spot.” Snyder notes the winterization was “not the most eye-catching part of the renovation, but without it, Penn State might be holding its breath until kick. The school also has extra port-a-potties on hand for next weekend in case something goes wrong, Kraft said.” Meanwhile, there are myriad other logistical challenges associated with hosting a CFP game, and Nittany Lions Deputy AD for Internal Operations Vinnie James says: “There are only two printers in the country that can print 24,000 parking passes so we had to get that order in probably August or September. We’re like well, we’ve gotta do this just in case, and if we don’t end up doing it just don’t put the year on them — just in case.” Despite it being a home game for Penn State, Snyder notes the team won’t be able to treat it like one recruiting-wise. Because the CFP controls ticketing and retains all money from ticket sales, there are no free tickets to distribute to recruits and recruiting guests like there normally would be. More. (link)

North Carolina officially introduced Bill Belichick as its new Football HC today, and the former Patriots HC says he became more invested in college football than he expected due to recent rules changes. "College came to me this year. I didn't go seek it out. Probably a dozen coaches asked to talk with me about certain things, like a salary cap, headsets, two-minute warning, sideline tablets." Belichick went on to say that “I believe we’re going to run a good program and have a good team. We’ll see where that all goes. I’m not making any predictions. I’m just saying I’m coming in to do the best I can.” As for how long he plans to coach, Belichick said he feels like doing it a “long time” and noted the recruiting vision will not only be his, but also GM Michael Lombardi’s. Belichick noted there would be a scouting department involved, with a traditional GM-coach hierarchy that will be similar but "not identical" to the NFL. Asked if he might return to the NFL should a team come calling in a year or two, Belichick replied: “I didn’t come here to leave. Also from Belichick, whose dad was an AC for the Tar Heels: “I’ve always wanted to coach in college football. It just never really worked out. Had some good years in the NFL so that was OK, but this was really a dream come true. I grew up in college football with my dad, who was in it for 50 years. All I knew was college football. It’s great to be back in Carolina, an environment I grew up in.” (link, link); Full press conference. (link); To start the press conference, Tar Heels AD Bubba Cunningham donned a sleeveless suit jacket, an homage to Belichick’s iconic game day look. (link); According to Belichick’s term sheet, he will earn $10M per year for five years with the first three years guaranteed. He will also have a $100K annual expense account, and his bonuses will max out at $3.5M. The deal, per USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz, also includes a $10M AC salary pool, $1M for a strength staff, $5.3M for a support staff, including the GM, and $13M for revenue-sharing. College Football Playoff-related bonuses range from $750K for making it to $1.75M for winning it. Win-based bonuses start at $150K for eight games and go up to $350K for winning 12. For making a non-CFP bowl game, Belichick will receive $150K, but that figure increases to $350K for a non-CFP “elite bowl appearance.” He’s also in line to earn $200K for making the conference championship game and that increases to $300K for winning it. The total is about $3.96M, and Tech will also pay $462K of Wood's buyout. The annual amounts are significant, and perhaps a dealbreaker, but the length of the deal was not something [Houston] was prepared to do. The WWE has created customized championship belts for St. Bonaventure, adding the Bonnies to a growing roster of colleges with “Legacy Belts” which includes Michigan, Notre Dame, Texas, Florida, LSU and Penn State, among others. The partnership also includes NIL opportunities for men’s student-athletes, according to Bonnies GM Adrian Wojnarowski, who says: “Our fans will love the Bonnies-inspired championship title belts, and our student-athletes will be the beneficiaries of the opportunities that come from our alignment with WWE.” Woj also said he’s working on getting an NIL deal for former student-athlete Marques Green this week, who was famously photographed 20 years ago in a uniform that became one of the earliest sports memes. After a mishap with Green’s uniform left him without one, the only available alternative for the 5’6” guard was that of the 7’2” backup center. (link)

The U.S. Senate voted to not extend Lauren McFerran as NLRB chairman for another five years. Had she been confirmed, Democrats would have controlled a majority of NLRB for the first two years of Donald Trump’s term. The Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty: “But Joe Manchin + Krysten Sinema voted no on McFerran, meaning Trump will nominate someone to fill the vacancy created at the end of the year. That will flip the NLRB to R control. In turn, progress toward college athlete employment w/ the NLRB could really, really slow down.” (link)

The National College Players Association clarified a previous statement that parts of the House settlement contravened multiple state NIL laws, according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit. NCPA Executive Director Ramogi Huma explained in an email that the group was amending its previous position “after receiving information” from the plaintiff’s law firm Hagens Berman, which serves as class co-counsel. The NCPA now says the settlement “has not been deemed illegal in any way” and notes that “any NCAA rule that violates a state law would still be subject to such state laws and enforcement by the states.” House plaintiffs’ attorney Steve Berman: “We are pleased that they are correcting the information. It’s important, and the judge has acknowledged that the class get completely accurate information about the case.” (link)

+ USA Today’s Matt Hayes disagrees with Florida State AD Michael Alford’s assertion that “we never said we wanted to leave the league,” writing: “In Florida State’s August 2023 lawsuit against the ACC, on page 32 of the 38-page complaint, item 151 states: ‘Florida State be deemed to have issued its formal notice of withdrawal from the ACC under Section 1.4.5 of the ACC Constitution, effective August 14, 2023.’” Furthermore, Hayes notes the FSU Board of Trustees said it wanted an exit plan from the ACC by August of 2024. During that meeting, board member/former FSU QB Drew Weatherford remarked: “It’s not a matter of if we leave. But when and how.” When asked at yesterday’s SBJ IAF whether FSU was still positioned to leave the ACC, Weatherford said: “We just have to solve for [the financial disadvantage]. If we can do that where we are [with the ACC], that’s great. If we can’t, I’m still open to the option that we need to find another conference.” Alford added: “We’ve always questioned the revenue distribution. Go back in history, you will never see the president or myself say we want out of the league. We have great peer institutions, we’re a lot alike. We’ve always had great communication. [ACC Commissioner] Jim [Phillips] and I from day 1. We’re trying to solve the problems.” (link)
+ Texas AD Chris Del Conte, Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione, Cal AD Jim Knowlton and UCLA AD Martin Jarmond talked about their respective conference realignment experiences on a panel yesterday, during which Del Conte explained: “We had this plan that was so eloquent, it's kind of like breaking up with your girlfriend back in high school. You rehearse this thing a thousand times, then you get in there and you just wet the bed. Then she hates you forever. Then the old adage, ‘Can we still be friends?’ There ain't no friends. That was not happening.” Castiglione remarked: “We loved the Big 12, [were] very loyal to the Big 12 in many ways, but if you looked at the way the media agreements were going to be renegotiated, the Big 12 was last to the table, and that's after all the pro sports contracts were redone, too. So, it was really questioning whether the Big 12 was going to be in a position to have the right amount of growth that we all needed for the future.” As the clock wound down on the Pac-12, Knowlton says former Chancellor Carol Christ was convinced the schools would each “sign the grant of rights that Friday morning at 7. And when that didn't happen, that really changed for Cal ... There’s the five stages of realignment, and it was ‘horror,’ ‘terror,’ ‘chaos,’ ‘begging’ and then finally ‘relief.’” Jarmond on what has been unexpected so far in the Big Ten: “Iowa came to play in the Rose Bowl this year, and Delta created two flights just for Iowa fans. They came strong. But we've also seen when some of the Big Ten schools that have come for a game, a basketball game or football game, they might come to another game. We've had some repeat customers also come and just watch a UCLA match. So that's been positive. I didn't really anticipate that, but that's been a boon.” (link)
+ Ole Miss-focused Grove Collective Executive Director Walker Jones commented on the future of collectives: “The answer will vary based off where you sit. So the answer for us at Ole Miss may be different than South Carolina or Georgia or Oregon or Ohio State, just kind of depends. I think one of the few things I would say is we will definitely be charged with turning in from collectives to agencies, boutique agencies that are content driven, activation driven, brand marketing driven. I don't want to sit in front of a room with 200 donors and beg for money to go buy a five-star quarterback. That's not my highest and best use. And I don't think that's what we should be doing. We should be providing opportunities for our student-athletes that demand market value for who they are on the field or on the court and serving as that agency of record for the universities.” Guaranteed commercial NIL opportunities will crystallize as the next arms race in the industry, Jones went on to say. “They're going to tell the student-athlete you're going to make $500K to be the quarterback at our university on student athlete compensation, and you can anticipate $200K on top of that with…student-athlete influencer marketing opportunities with brand agreements. Those are the headwinds and the conversations that universities are starting to have on how to separate themselves from their peers.” (link)

North Carolina has officially announced former New England Patriots HC Bill Belichick as its next Football HC. According to The Athletic’s Brendan Marks, Michael Silver, Jeff Howe and Dianna Russini, Belichick and UNC have agreed to a five-year, $50M deal. They also report UNC’s staff will include Washington DC Steve Belichick and former Cleveland Browns GM/Patriots Asst. to the Coaching Staff Michael Lombardi, who will serve as the team’s GM. Along with Belichick, other finalists for the position were Cleveland Browns AC Tommy Rees, Georgia DC Glenn Schumann, and Army West Point HC Jeff Monken, according to The Athletic. USA Today’s Matt Hayes: “Source tells me UNC will increase NIL package for football from $4M to $20M in effort to land Belichick.” (link, link, link)

North Carolina also announces a $13.5M gift that was made in 2023 by the Joan H. Gillings Foundation, which was established with Gillings’ passing in 2021. In her memory, Joan's family endowed a student-athlete scholarship and the women's lacrosse head coach position, supported three facility renovations (women's golf, women's tennis and women's basketball), established the Nutrition, Wellness & Mental Health Endowment, endowed the FORevHER Tar Heels mentorship program and ensured every women's team would have at least $1M in their operating endowments. Because of additional funding, the Mental Health and Performance Psychology (MHPP) program served 301 athletes in the 2023-24 academic year and improved the wait time by a week. More on the gift’s impact. (link)

Wyoming is requesting a one-time allocation of $1.5M from the state legislature in its supplemental budget to help with the House settlement. Cowboys AD Tom Burman addressed the Joint Appropriations Committee this week and said: “The world of college athletics is changing dramatically. We just feel like this is an opportunity for us to grow our program and keep up, and we’re hoping that between the university, the state and the private sector, we can cover all these costs.” Asked what it would mean if the school did not receive the allocation, Burman responded: “We would probably be looking at sport elimination and making some very draconian cuts.” Burman also said the Cowboys plan to add three scholarships for football and one for men’s basketball next year along with three for volleyball, two for women’s soccer and three more for other women’s sports. As part of its annual survey of Football AC compensation, USA Today’s Tom Schad and Steve Berkowitz found that average pay for OC and DC positions has increased by nearly 25% in just four years to $1.1M annually. “And this year, for perhaps the first time, Power 4 coordinators are making even more than Group of 5 head coaches, whose average pay is $1.05M. At the same time, coaches and athletics directors say it’s also never been more difficult – or more complicated – to be a head coach. This is especially true in the Group of 5, where the rules changes empowering players to more easily transfer and profit off their name, image and likeness have had a more jarring impact than in the Power 4.” Former Minnesota/New Mexico State HC Jerry Kill: “It’s a lot different [in the Group of Five], I can tell you that. I think people just say, ‘Hey, I’ll just go be a coordinator and make good money.’ You see older guys doing that more than anybody, I think.” Schad and Berkowitz note there are 78 ACs at FBS public schools this season making at least $1M, “including 18 position coaches and a whopping six assistants from the same school: Ohio State. When USA Today Sports first started tracking assistant coach pay in 2009, there was just one (when not adjusting for inflation).” The math works in the other direction as well, as NMSU AD Mario Moccia says hiring a “current Power 4 coordinator just seems like it’s not realistic” given the salary differences that now exist between the two levels. Buffalo AD Mark Alnutt adds: “You have to look at a different candidate pool. One that, again, is a good fit, a good match for a particular institution. But then one that also maybe is not the highest level coordinator, that you know you can’t get.” More. (link)

Equally important is ensuring that all offices across campus are managing these cases in a central electronic location, so that nothing falls through the cracks and institutional awareness is increased rather than siloed.” RealResponse Co-Founder/CEO David Chadwick adds: “With the integration of our two technologies, we are able to offer campus departments and organizations – Student Affairs, Student Conduct, Title IX, Athletics, Fraternity and Sorority Life, among others – an end-to-end information gathering and case management system.” (link)

Here are the latest get-in prices for the first-round College Football Playoff games, according to Front Office Sports’ Margaret Fleming: $911 for Notre Dame–Indiana, $142 for Penn State–SMU, $314 for Texas-Clemson, and $336 for Ohio State–Tennessee. All prices are as of yesterday. Travel prices are also soaring in some places, as Fleming notes: “As of Tuesday, State College hotels that usually cost about $100 per night jumped to roughly $1,200 to $1,500 per night during the CFP, or sold out of rooms completely. Airbnbs in the town have jumped from a couple of hundred dollars per night to roughly between $1,000 and $2,500. … Many of South Bend’s hotels sold out of their inventory, and several Airbnbs are higher than $3,500 per night. South Bend, Indiana, and State College, Pennsylvania, are the two smallest cities—at roughly 100,000 residents—hosting games and therefore more vulnerable to price-gouging. Columbus has nearly a million residents, but still, a number of hotels near OSU have shot up to more than $400 for Saturday night. Travel prices in Austin—one of the largest markets in the country—appear to be largely unchanged.” Mike Patel, who owns a Holiday Inn Express about 25 miles from Penn State: “It’s given a little bit of extra boost in winter months. We really slow down in winter months. So this gives extra help to pay the bills and take care of other stuff for the property.” (link)
