Alaska Anchorage AD Ryan Swartwood chats with D2.ticker as the latest AD in Residence to discuss handling institutional financial challenges, Volleyball successes and support and more. On volleyball: “The success of our Volleyball program has been an attractant to the university community. We are also in a good position where our programs have a dedicated following. We have a spectacular fan base and a fantastic facility; the Alaska Airlines Center is a $100 million arena with a capacity of 5,000. For Volleyball events, we start planning and promotion of ticket sales months in advance. We work with Orange Slice Marketing Agency here in Anchorage to promote the event on radio and social media. Outreach to the youth Volleyball community is also a key component.” Swartwood credits former HC Chris Green with “developing the comprehensive program” and the success of the inaugural Pack the House event, which has continued under current HC Stacie Meisner. More: “With regard to our budget, I am comfortable with my perspectives, though they may be different. My perspective is that resources are always limited, so they should be treated as special. When I’m looking at our budget, it can appear to be a daunting process. There are so many considerations: start-up costs, continuing costs, surprise costs, one-time costs, gender equity costs, and more. When making decisions, I am thinking of the most effective use of resources and the fulfillment of our Annual Operations Plan. I also think of efficiency. We do not have resources to waste. And time is a resource. Thinking of meeting schedules! I also think of reporting, as we are a public institution and accountable to reporting and audit. The number of high-school graduates will reach a record high in 2025 and then decline steadily for many years, according to a new report from the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE), which indicates that during that period, the number of students graduating from public high schools who identify as Hispanic or multiracial will continue to increase while the number of students of all other races and ethnicities will decline. From the report: “This inflection point comes as other challenges loom. Concerns about college affordability, questions about the value of postsecondary education, and a favorable labor market with relatively high starting wages and low unemployment put additional pressures on already-declining postsecondary enrollment.” The report goes on to point out that “while the [enrollment] cliff metaphor is useful to illustrate the impending demographic shift for policymakers, the reality will be a slower and steadier decline.” Specifically, WICHE projects the number of high school graduates will reach its 2025 peak of nearly 3.9M before gradually dropping to around 3.4M in 2041, which would be in line with 2010 levels. Among regions, only the South will see a net increase in high-school graduates (3%) between 2023 and 2041, according to the projections. The Northeast (-17%), Midwest (-16%), and West (-20%) will see declines. A total of 38 states will see a decline in high-school graduates. And five states with large populations — California, Illinois, Michigan, New York, and Pennsylvania — will account for three-quarters of the total projected decline nationally. During that time, a handful of states will see significant increases, including Tennessee (15%), South Carolina (14%), and Florida (12%). Lots more in the full report. (link)

On the topic of post-house roster limits, Wisconsin.Golf’s Rob Hernandez chats with HCs across the industry about the impact it will have on their programs. Wisconsin-Parkside Director of Golf Carly Werwie-Swartz: ”I feel like we will see an impact as it will have a trickle-down effect at all levels with everyone wanting to find a place to play. I think the impact will be more noticeable in spring as the Portal becomes more filled and roster spots are finalized.” Wisconsin-Whitewater (DIII) Women’s Golf HC Andrea Wieland: “What I have noted is that some coaches have been vocal about using the transfer portal more than originally planned. In general, it seems that (for all sports), coaches are preferring recruits that are READY to compete. … So, college coaches can turn to the portal to find a junior or senior to round out their lineup. In golf, there is definitely some of this happening, or will happen, so, for mid-major colleges, the top freshmen might go there to compete for a year or two before trying to transfer to a Power 5 school. The new roster limits might not allow those Power 5 schools to ‘take a chance’ on a freshman so they have to be a little more strategic on who they give offers to. In all cases, I think coaches just need to be honest about what they have for a plan for the students and their scholarships. And the students need to be honest. There isn’t much breathing room when you have a roster limit.” (link)

Eastern New Mexico will discontinue Men’s Soccer effective immediately. AD Kevin Fite: “This program was reinstated three years ago with the hope that a stable and successful program could be developed that would provide collegiate playing opportunities in this area. Unfortunately, we have seen limited competitive success, considerable roster turnover each year and limited participants from this state and region. With the departure of Brandon Misuraca and significant team members from this year's squad in the transfer portal, now seems like the most opportune time to initiate a transition to discontinue men's soccer.”(link)

President Joe Biden on Wednesday signed into law the FAFSA Deadline Act, which requires the U.S. Department of Education to make Oct. 1 the official FAFSA launch date each year. If agency officials can't meet that deadline, the secretary of education must testify before Congress, explain any delays and estimate their potential cost to families. Meanwhile, the Senate on Wednesday passed the Stop Campus Hazing Act, which would broaden the definition of hazing and compel colleges to disclose every hazing incident on campus. The bill passed the House in September, and Biden is expected to sign it before leaving office. (link)
