The University System of Georgia Board of Regents approved $45M in upgrades to Georgia’s Foley Field and $38.5M in upgrades to UGA’s Jack Turner Softball Stadium. Foley Field is set to receive a 41K-sq-ft addition along the third base line, a two-lane pitching lab, players’ lounge, nutrition area and more. The softball project includes a two-story, 27,500-sq-ft facility for players and a renovation of 4,500 square feet of existing team areas into coaches’ offices and a staff locker room. Both projects are expected to be completed ahead of the 2025 season. (link)

Oral Roberts held a grand opening for the $15M, 50K-sq-ft Mike Carter Athletic Center, which features basketball practice courts, administrative and coaches offices, a 10K-sq-ft indoor sports performance area, and the ELI (Education, Learning, Integrity) Academic Center. Golden Eagles AD Johnson: “This building will be nothing short of a quantum leap for ORU's coaches and student-athletes. The past few years have seen Sweet 16's, multiple championships, national rankings, record GPAs, conference/national awards, and NCAA Tournament success across all sports, but the MCAC will guarantee ORU's best days are before it.” (link)

Lamar has no plans to shutter its football program, according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football reporter Hogue, who cites sources “close to the situation.” Hogue also points out the Cardinals are upgrading the video board and sound system inside Provost Umphrey Stadium and installed new turf before the 2021 season. Georgia Tech will relocate its pregame festivities from their current location near the north side of the stadium to the south end of the stadium along [the confusingly named, in this case] North Avenue. Yellow Jackets AD Batt: “This plan still has several details to iron out and permitting processes to complete, but conceptually, all of the activities that have traditionally been activated on Callaway Plaza – that’s team entrance, the Wreck coming down Yellow Jacket Alley, the band – that’ll be moved to North Avenue.” The switch is part of Batt’s larger plan to block a portion of North Avenue off from traffic to create what he calls “a really dense area of marketing, game-day activations, tailgating” in that area. “We really want to have the North Avenue corridor be the front door of our athletics game-day experience.” (link)

Houston has surpassed 5K new FB season tickets sold, setting a TDECU Stadium record since the facility's opening in 2014. Overall, the Cougars have sold over 15K season tickets and expect that figure to continue to grow. (link)

San Diego State has lowered season-ticket prices by 15-40% on 5,600 of Snapdragon Stadium’s seats for the 2023 season. The decision comes following a survey sent to fans, who identified lower season ticket prices, lower parking prices, improved benefits, and better communication between SDSU and season ticket holders as areas for improvement. Aztecs AD Wicker: “As football coaches say, the most improvement is made between Game 1 and Game 2. While we saw improvement in our game day operations throughout the season, we are committed to making even greater strides in Year 2.” Season tickets on the visitor side that were priced from $600-$1,500 last season are now $450-$1,000, while season tickets on the home side that were priced from $850-$1,000 a year ago are now $600-$850. Former Howard women’s lacrosse student-athlete Matthews says she was dismissed from the team for publicly accusing the coach of not supporting her mental health. Matthews also alleges that she was the subject of bullying by upperclassmen who harassed her and, in one instance, “proceeded to basically stomp on my thigh, the side of my thigh, with her cleat on.” After telling HC Healy-Silcott, Matthews says instead of taking action, she threatened to take everyone’s scholarships away. Howard says in a statement: “The university takes all allegations of bullying and harassment seriously. At the current time, there is no evidence of misconduct, but this matter is currently in the investigation process. The university cannot comment further under family educational rights and privacy act (FERPA)." (link)

“By all accounts, women’s college gymnastics is having a moment,” Washington Post columnist Osaka writes before noting the sport is “plagued by controversy about scoring: In the past decade, the number of perfect 10s awarded has ballooned. In 2011, only two routines received perfect 10s. In 2022, 71 did.” And before last weekend’s national championships, 80 routines received perfect 10s. The trend could help “galvanize fans who are showing new enthusiasm for gymnastics,” Osaka continues, except for the fact that “some highly scored routines have contained visible errors, spurring controversy about how NCAA judges are compensated, trained and evaluated.” Beyond the way judges are scoring routines, Osaka points out other factors may be contributing to the rise in 10s, including an influx of new athletes eligible to compete in college due to NIL. Since the Tokyo Olympics, four of the six members of the U.S. Olympic team have competed in college, including all-around gold medalist Lee. Some, including former Olympian/current ESPN commentator Johnson-Clarke, believe the NCAA needs to adopt its own code of points, and former Utah HC Marsden cautions: “What we don’t want to happen is that scoring gets so ridiculous that even to the general viewer it seems like a farce.” (link)

The Wrestling Rules Committee made several recommendations for the 2023-24 season, including making all takedowns worth 3 points, eliminating the one-touch takedown, changing the way wrestlers can earn riding time, providing the referee with the authority to confirm or overturn all calls or missed calls during a video review challenged sequence, and eliminating the rule limiting all facial hair to a half-inch. Rider HC/Committee Chair Hangey: “Wrestling is in a time of need to change. We felt like something this significant would give a boost to the sport for viewership for the average fan and for longtime traditional fans. It will increase excitement and scoring. It will change tactics for coaches and kids. … When the 3-point line was implemented in basketball, everyone hated it at first. We are trying to evolve the sport of wrestling. We want to bring more fans to the sport without impacting the integrity of the sport." (link)

Colorado has introduced a bill to amend its NIL law by adding that schools may “identify/create/solicit/facilitate NIL deals so long as they get the athlete's consent and they inform the athlete within 72 hours, and charitable groups may compensate athletes for their NIL,” per SUNY Cortland (DIII) professor Greene. The NBC Sports Athlete Direct NIL platform has tapped MOGL to broaden NBC Sports’ NIL offerings to advertisers, who will be able to source more athletes. Now, we can offer advertisers another tool, whether it’s a local, regional or national campaign.” (link)

George Mason names Brown Asst. VP for Athletics and Recreation/COO Lewis as its next AD, effective July 1. George Mason President Washington: “His strong background in Division I athletics makes him a great choice to take Patriots Athletics to the next level. But, beyond that, what impressed me from the outset in talking with him are the values he holds dear that run similar to our own. We look forward to the great things he will do in setting the standard of excellence for our student-athletes in every way." Collegiate Sports Associates assisted with the search. (link)

Arizona State QB Rashada talks about his NIL saga, telling CBS’ Dodd: "I never thought I could handle something like that. You go through it. It's part of it. It's part of life. You can't really control what's in front of you." Rashada’s marketing agent, JTM Sports CEO Zager, tells Dodd: “How could you not feel badly for the kid? He's being called a greedy a–hole, son of a – whatever it is, excuse my language. None of that is true. If anyone knows Jaden Rashada, he's one of the best people I've ever met. If you want to point the finger at someone, point it at us … or point it at Florida or point it at the parties that were involved in negotiating that deal." NCAA President Baker also weighs in, saying Rashada is a “great example of what the so-called 'Wild West' looks like and what happened – what can happen.” Reiterating the need for a national NIL standard, Baker also notes “I don't want to limit what anybody gets, but I definitely want them to know what they're getting." Former New Mexico State men’s basketball student-athletes Benjamin and Odunewu, along with Benjamin’s father, have filed a lawsuit against NMSU Board of Regents, former MBB HC Heiar and others regarding the hazing violations reported in February. CBS’ Norlander points out that Benjamin’s father is a “prominent NMSU alumnus (he's in the school's HOF) and a respected high school coach in Las Cruces.” In the suit, Benjamin and Odunewu allege they were sexually assaulted by three teammates and that despite reporting it to the coaching staff nothing was done. From the suit: “Slapping a label of hazing on such behavior mischaracterizes the seriousness of the harmful conduct. When the behavior goes too far, and crosses the line into nonconsensual touching, it is not mere hazing; it is battery and sexual assault. When the behavior continues for months, it cannot be viewed as an initiation rite; instead, it is harassment and abuse." (link, link)

The New York Post’s Marchand and SBJ’s Ourand cover several topics on this week’s podcast, including upcoming layoffs at ESPN, which Marchand reports will begin relatively soon and are likely to occur in three rounds, with the first round involving executives and off-camera employees. Further, in contrast to ESPN’s recent multi year extension of Marcus Spears, Marchand notes the company may approach others and give the option to stay but for far less money. “People are going to have decisions to make on that. They might end up just leaving and getting paid their full contract. That’s a tough decision to make, to have to work and make less than leaving and making your full number.” (link)

The Athletic’s Wasserman, Ubben and Light analyzed data from the Power 5 football programs from 2009-2019 to see which schools’ three-, four- and five-star players went pro at the highest clip. Stanford leads the way with 83.3% (five out of six) of its five-star recruits during that time period getting drafted by an NFL team, followed by Clemson (75%, 12 of 16). Alabama signed the highest number of five-star players (44), of whom 30 were drafted, giving the Crimson Tide a draft rate of 68.2%. The next highest number of five-stars signed was Georgia (34), with 22 (64.7%) going pro. On the other end of the spectrum, Texas (23.5%) and Oklahoma (25%) had the smallest ratio of five-star signees who went on to get drafted. Facility Features…
+ Montana State AD Costello talks about the need for an indoor football practice facility, saying: “I think when you look across the landscape of FCS football — and even FBS football — if you’re a northern climate school it’s a necessity.” In November, the Bobcats received approval to spend $1.5M for design services, and Costello says the department has seen some preliminary renderings, but “once we're able to select an architect to design the facility, we’ll start getting into more of the details. … When we design it there will be a base building, which includes the 100 yards of turf, but then if we want to expand, based on donations, we would be able to do that during the design process. I think really the sky is the limit, but it’s the limit based on fundraising.” While there is no current public campaign for the facility, Costello notes the university is doing “very well” in fundraising and will share more details once the final documents to break ground are in hand.
