Goshen President Rebecca Stoltzfus chats with The Goshen News’ Collin Echols about the Maple Leafs’ successes this year under Interim AD Chad Coleman and the ongoing AD search. Asked what GC needs in its next AD, Stoltzfus: ”As we seek our next athletic director, we want to build on the strengths of Maple Leaf Athletics and the advances that were made under the former director, including the mission of the department: to empower students to lead, serve and build community through competitive athletics. […] We have increased the number of athletes at GC, in part through the addition of men’s and women’s bowling this year. Goshen College student-athletes thrive academically and persist to graduation at outstanding rates.” On the job Coleman, who is set to continue in the role through June 2025, has done: “We are fortunate the Interim Director, Chad Coleman, brings experience to the role this year. We are taking this interim year to further hone our strategy for athletics at Goshen College and will select a permanent athletic director that is best suited to that strategy.” (link)

The number of high-school graduates will reach a record high in 2025 and then decline steadily for many years, according to a new report from the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE), which indicates that during that period, the number of students graduating from public high schools who identify as Hispanic or multiracial will continue to increase while the number of students of all other races and ethnicities will decline. From the report: “This inflection point comes as other challenges loom. Concerns about college affordability, questions about the value of postsecondary education, and a favorable labor market with relatively high starting wages and low unemployment put additional pressures on already-declining postsecondary enrollment.” The report goes on to point out that “while the [enrollment] cliff metaphor is useful to illustrate the impending demographic shift for policymakers, the reality will be a slower and steadier decline.” Specifically, WICHE projects the number of high school graduates will reach its 2025 peak of nearly 3.9M before gradually dropping to around 3.4M in 2041, which would be in line with 2010 levels. Among regions, only the South will see a net increase in high-school graduates (3%) between 2023 and 2041, according to the projections. The Northeast (-17%), Midwest (-16%), and West (-20%) will see declines. A total of 38 states will see a decline in high-school graduates. And five states with large populations — California, Illinois, Michigan, New York, and Pennsylvania — will account for three-quarters of the total projected decline nationally. During that time, a handful of states will see significant increases, including Tennessee (15%), South Carolina (14%), and Florida (12%). Lots more in the full report. (link)

NFL Flag Executive Director/RCX Sports CEO Izell Reese writes an SBJ op-ed about the rise of girls’ and women’s flag football and notes that 42,955 high school girls participated in the 2023-24 season, a 105% YoY increase. Meanwhile, nearly half a million girls aged six to 17 played flag football nationwide in 2023, and the number continues to rise. “The message is clear – girls want to play flag football. As this pathway expands, one crucial gap remains: NCAA membership sponsorship. That’s why, on behalf of the NFL, RCX Sports Foundation, USA Football and NFL Flag, we’ve applied to make women’s flag football an NCAA Emerging Sport for Women.” Reese points out the sport is already thriving on the NAIA and NJCAA levels while Conference Carolinas (NCAA DII) and Alabama State (NCAA DI) have also introduced the sport to their respective campuses. Further NCAA support, Reese continues, “would not only help cement its place on the national stage, but also enhance gender equity in athletics. It reinforces a powerful message — that young girls’ dreams are attainable, and their talent will be recognized and rewarded.” (link)

President Joe Biden on Wednesday signed into law the FAFSA Deadline Act, which requires the U.S. Department of Education to make Oct. 1 the official FAFSA launch date each year. If agency officials can't meet that deadline, the secretary of education must testify before Congress, explain any delays and estimate their potential cost to families. Meanwhile, the Senate on Wednesday passed the Stop Campus Hazing Act, which would broaden the definition of hazing and compel colleges to disclose every hazing incident on campus. The bill passed the House in September, and Biden is expected to sign it before leaving office. (link)

Data from the Commonfund Institute shows the Higher Education Price Index rose 3.4% in FY24, outpacing initial 3% projections. Of note: “Year over year, inflation rates for educational institutions declined in six of the eight components tracked by HEPI, with the most pronounced decreases in two components: utilities and supplies and materials. In recent years these have been the most volatile categories, inflating dramatically in FY2022 before cooling in FY2023 and deflating in FY2024. […] Comparing HEPI and the Consumer Price Index (CPI), while the former showed costs rising 3.4 percent in FY2024, costs rose in the latter by 3.3 percent. This is a return to the norm, as HEPI has exceeded CPI in eight of the past 10 years and historically HEPI exceeds CPI.” Full report. (link)
