Wichita State AD Kevin Saal has agreed to a three-year extension through the 2029-3030 academic year. The deal includes an annual 8.4% raise for the next six years, bumping what “had been a fixed $350K annual base salary to an annual average salary of $468,300 for the life of the contract,” according to The Wichita Eagle’s Taylor Eldridge, who adds: “Adjusting for the new salary and length, Saal is essentially starting a 6-year contract totaling $2.8M in base salary. With the College Football Playoff starting this weekend, Texas AD Chris Del Conte acknowledges some issues may need to be ironed out but tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “Everyone is going to second guess. The most important thing is we have a playoff. … We can always pick things apart. We went from determining a national champion in the media to a four-team playoff and now to a 12-team playoff. … All things considered, we got it right this year from what it started from.” Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua adds: “Being as objective as I can be as a college football fan, the whole season has been wonderful in that there's been so much intrigue with more teams circling around the playoffs, more storylines, more narratives. Interest in games has been off the charts, and it's been the perfect balance of creating a really exciting playoff format and retaining the importance of the regular season.” Ole Miss AD Keith Carter notes: “In any new process you’re going to learn things that we need to do better. We probably need to expand. I think we need to add more teams. If we saw anything this year, by doing that it creates much more buzz and everything around it. There are some structural things that need to be talked about…but Year 1, it was positive. Like anything, you’ve got to evolve and continue to grow it.” (link)

Alabama AD Greg Byrne clarifies his comments regarding the Crimson Tide’s non-conference football scheduling, telling The Game’s Ryan Fowler: “Here's what I made the mistake on: I probably should have said this, I thought people would understand it, but shame on me for not thinking that thing through – what I can't control is the SEC schedule. But we can control is the non-conference. If there's not going to be a recognition that not all schedules are created equal – next year we have Florida State and Wisconsin, the hay is in the barn on those, we're going to play those games – but do we need to look at down the road maybe not having two P4 games on our schedule like we do?" Former North Carolina Chancellor Holden Thorp joins Ovies + Giglio and says if today’s rules were in place in 2010ish, “Marvin Austin’s tweet wouldn’t have mattered, the NCAA never would’ve shown up and, for all we know, the problems at AFAM might not have been discovered or would have been discovered a different way, who knows…but I think [on the Belichick hire], I picked [Tar Heels AD] Bubba [Cunningham] out of a pool of outstanding people who all became ADs at other big Power 5 schools. I think he's done the best of the group, so I'm proud that I selected him, and there's a whole lot of drama behind this thing, but if ultimately what he said at the press conference was sincere, and he's excited about this and this was his choice, then I'm for it all the way. I'm team Bubba.” UNC’s leadership, Thorp says, has always been complicated and “if you were going to design a system and you looked around the country, you would conclude that North Carolina came up with the most complicated system you could have. And that is that one part of the system is similar to what you have at a lot of universities where the chancellor, who runs the campus, reports to the president, who runs the system, who reports to a board of politically appointed people – that's the board of governors. But in North Carolina you have this additional complication where there's a board of trustees that usually thinks that the chancellor works for them, but actually, on paper and if you look at the statutes, they have very little operational authority over the university – almost none. The reason that they're there is historically, when the system was created, the board of governors was much bigger and when they shrunk it, they didn't want to tell all the people who got kicked off that they had nothing to do, so they put them on these boards of trustees associated with the different campuses.” More from Thorp. Tennessee has raised $574M through its comprehensive My All Campaign, cruising past the initial goal of $500M. UT has set a new goal to raise $750M by the summer of 2026. Vols AD Danny White: "When we set our original goal, we knew it would be challenging. However, when the world's largest and most passionate fan base gets involved, the results are evident. Since our arrival on Rocky Top, we have prioritized strengthening our resources and operating budget, ensuring Tennessee stands shoulder to shoulder with the nation's elite, championship-caliber athletic programs. I want to thank everyone who has committed to this critical campaign. Together, we are steadily progressing toward establishing one of the largest and most competitive budgets and facility infrastructures in all of college sports." (link)

The New Mexico Department of Justice has released a report on the hazing issues involving the New Mexico State men’s basketball team during the 2022-23 season. Among the 35 recommendations made in the report are enhanced coordination, mandatory training, consistent discipline, recruiting scrutiny, leadership commitment and the creation of a resource center. Attorney General Raúl Torrez: “This report is intended to shine a light not only on the specific misconduct by members of NMSU’s basketball team but also the institutional deficiencies that allowed that misconduct to go unaddressed by leaders inside the university. While NMSU has made commendable progress since these incidents occurred, more must be done to ensure accountability and prevent future harm.” (link)

On3’s Joe Tipton catches up with several men’s basketball coaches to discuss the impact of the transfer portal on recruiting, and one Big 12 coach says: “It forces you to make a decision on how you choose to recruit NIL-wise. Whether you think a 23- or 24-year-old can help you win more than an 18-year-old. … Loyalty is no longer a word in men’s college basketball. You’re lucky to keep guys in your program for more than two years now.” Another Big 12 coach notes: “Gone are the days of taking gambles on high school players that have potential but lack the experience. We are signing one, maybe two high school players each year as opposed to four to five each year like the past. It’s a sad but true reality.” A Big Ten coach adds: “Very few players stay at schools for three or four years and develop so we aim for instant impact freshmen. If guys aren’t playing right away they rarely stick through it and develop.” Meanwhile, a high-major coach explains that “we feel a lot of programs are prioritizing the portal over high school kids and we feel if we can find the right kids and families that it could be to our advantage. This might allow us to steal some talented high school kids, get them into our program and develop them like before the portal. Our key has been and will be player retention. We use the portal to fill holes or gaps on our roster. We are not a school that can rebuild and reconstruct our roster due to the academic component at our school.” (link)

Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich takes a look at how ESPN College GameDay will handle being on two campuses (Notre Dame and Ohio State) in 24 hours this weekend, and Coordinating Producer Matthew Garrett says: “They were all pretty strongly in favor of, we have to be there for the first on-campus game.” The ESPN operations team, Garrett adds, are “the best at what they do. They have the ability to move our traveling circus around and set it up wherever we need them to be.” GameDay had already decided on the Friday night slot no matter what, and chose the Saturday evening matchup because it gave the show “the best opportunity to cover the day in totality.” An added bonus, Christovich notes, is that analyst Kirk Herbstreit, “known for his exhausting travel schedules, could stay in one place all day Saturday for the morning show and for the evening call. … Herbstreit landed in South Bend around 4 a.m. with his golden retriever, Peter, who will accompany him throughout the weekend. The rest of the team arrived in South Bend on Friday morning. The show will run from about 3:30 p.m. ET to kickoff, and it will move from Notre Dame’s Library Lawn to inside the stadium at around 7 p.m.” The crew will pack up after halftime and fly to Columbus, arriving at around 1 a.m. Garrett: “You throw something at them that you think might be one bridge too far. And it never is.” (link)

What you are about to read is real and it might be is without a doubt the most glorious idea in the history of sports: “St. John's will host Coming to America Night on Dec. 28 during the men's basketball game versus Delaware, as well as release a Carnesecca Legacy Collection in honor of St. John's winningest head coach and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer. … Fans in attendance for the Red Storm men's basketball contest with Delaware will be treated to a variety of Coming to America Night activities and entertainment. In-arena activations include movie trivia and music, contests and games with 1987-themed prizes, an exclusive exhibit featuring an authentic McDowell's uniform – a nod to the fictional fast-food restaurant in the movie, and custom merchandise such as a specially designed "In the Face" t-shirt, referencing one of the movie's most iconic lines.” The event is the result of a collaboration with cllct. For those participating in the trivia contest, here are some answers: My-T-Sharp, Joe Louis was 75 years old when he fought Rocky Marciano (and lived to be at least 137, according to Frank Sinatra), Soul-Glo, 8507 Queens Boulevard, Randy Watson, Louie Anderson and Samuel L. Costs for operating colleges and universities rose by 3.4% in FY24, according to the latest Higher Education Price Index from the Commonfund Institute. According to Higher Ed Dive’s Ben Unglesbee, the price increases outpaced Commonfund’s preliminary projections this spring of 3% for the year; however, the HEPI showed that inflation has slowed more than half a percentage point from FY23 and is down nearly two percentage points from 2022’s 5.2% inflation rate. Utility prices and costs of supplies and materials slowed the most significantly, after recent years of volatility in those areas. While costs for institutions are cooling, “there is an ongoing trend of inflation rates remaining elevated compared with the previous decade,” according to the report, which also notes: “This is a return to the norm, as HEPI has exceeded CPI in eight of the past 10 years and historically HEPI exceeds CPI.” (link)

More contract details for new South Carolina AD Jeremiah Donati: The six-year pact starts at $1.9M per year with $100K annual increases. Incentive wise, Donati can earn up to an additional $400K per year highlighted by a department APR score of 986 or above & a GSR of 94% or better, both of which are worth $100K. There’s another $50K on the table for a department-wide GPA of 3.35 or better. Competitive access to NCAA Tournaments, Final Fours & bowl games are worth $25K to $75K. If Donati were to exit Columbia without cause before the end of 2028 he’d owe 70% of remaining base pay, a figure that drops to $500K in 2029 & $250K in 2030. If the university were to make a move, again without cause, Donati would be owed 70% of remaining base pay. The Gamecocks are also covering the full $2.05M buyout Donati owes TCU. All per CollegeAD. Michigan AD & College Football Playoff chair Warde Manuel catches up with NOLA.com’s Ted Lewis to discuss his tenure leading the CFP group. On potential changes to the event’s format: “It’s too soon to say it’s broken. I think, let’s not rush it. Let’s see how another iteration goes, and if the commissioners decide to change, then it’s up to them.” As for a future where football pulls away from the rest of the industry framework to create its own entity: “Since I don’t have a crystal ball I’m not sure. But college sports is dealing with a lot off the field (revenue sharing, portal, NIL, realignment, etc.) matters and will continue to do so. College football also will continue to be very popular, but we have to continue to focus on the success of the game and the connections to our student-athletes and the fans.” More. (link)

Missouri AD Laird Veatch continues to reframe revenue needs for the Tigers: “We’ve got to really engage with not just our donor community, but our corporate partner community. We’ll be pushing on a lot of different levels, and much of it is about working on and maintaining the relationships but also thinking differently than what we have in the past and being willing to get creative with those partners. [...] We’ve talked so much about being the only (power conference) school in the state and the opportunities that are here. We need to unlock that potential, and I think after my time here, I could look back and feel that I was a part of that. That’ll be incredibly rewarding.” In a separate recent interview, Veatch notes: “We call it more competitive excellence because we need the funds we need to grow our overall pie, right? We need to get our revenue that we generate more on par with our counterparts so that we're in a position to pay for that. We're trying to pull all that back in as this now becomes more in-house. So it's trying to streamline and simplify that so fans know there's not these different kinds of confusing zones they can give to. It's really straightforward Mizzou Athletics Fund for game-day-related stuff, if you want to help us above and beyond that, you know, it's the Mizzou Leadership Circle." (link, link)

USA Today’s Dan Wolken wonders what the future holds for bowl games and notes one “venerable power broker” recently told him: “It’s not sustainable. Is it really a reward when people don’t want to play? The obvious answer might be just don’t do them. I know there's a lot of tradition there, and I'm a traditional (person). I just don’t see how it’s going to work.” While there will undoubtedly be discussion among commissioners on how to best approach non-College Football Playoff bowls when the new CFP contract begins in 2026, Wolken notes: “The reality check here is bowl season, for all its problems, is inexorably linked to ESPN’s December programming schedule. In fact, ESPN owns and operates 17 of those games itself and has broadcast agreements with nearly all of the others. Good luck convincing college football's most important business partner that bowl games are no longer worthwhile when they’re filling television windows over the holidays that generate more viewers than the NBA, college basketball or NHL regular season games that would likely take their place.” Bowl Season Executive Director Nick Carparelli tells Wolken: “People love bowl games and the bowl system. The problem is not with bowl games, it’s with the infrastructure surrounding college football right now that’s negatively impacting the sport at every level. We need to stop making excuses and stop pointing out reasons why we can't make changes that are good for the sport and take some bold steps to fix it.” Meanwhile, another person close to the process says the value of bowl games is increasingly diluted, “and the bowls don't lose money because they've passed all the risk on to the schools. We need to generate more value (to keep them viable).” More. (link)

Last night’s NCAA Women’s Volleyball Final Four matches between Louisville & Pittsburgh, plus Nebraska & Penn State, drew 21,726 fans, topping the previous Final Four record, set last season, by nearly 2,000. Nebraska’s involvement certainly helps as its string of record-breaking events continues. Volleyball Day at Memorial Stadium last year brought in 92,003 spectators, the 2023 NCAA Championship match between Texas and Nebraska drew 1.7M on television and the Nebraska vs. Wisconsin tilt which aired on the Big Ten Network in 2023 averaged 612K viewers, making it the most-watched contest of any sport in network history. Virginia landed another major gift. This time it’s a $3M matching gift from an anonymous donor for the Football Enhancement Fund. More context: “From December 19, 2024, through August 30, 2025, every donation made to the Football Enhancement Fund will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the anonymous donor, doubling its impact. The matching funds will enhance the overall student-athlete experience by prioritizing nutrition, while also enhancing travel and recruiting.” (link)

Headlining attorney Tom Mars chimes in on the Diego Pavia court decision: “Although the federal court injunction in favor of Diego Pavia is limited to his specific case, it only took 24 hours for me to hear from a former JUCO football player (now a senior) whose head coach gave him my number. I’m sure other sports lawyers are getting similar calls. [...] The ‘roadmap’ for other former JUCO players: Player’s lawyer (paid by school as allowed in eligibility cases per NCAA rule) use Pavia pleadings as template with adjustments showing irreparable harm, citing Pavia ruling. After 3-4 consecutive losses, the NCAA surrenders.” (link)

Former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban on the Pat McAfee Show yesterday: “Like the first year (2021), we had name, image and likeness four, five years ago, we had $3 million. And everybody was happy. Meanwhile, The College Sports Company, which has helped NIL collectives & student-athletes build media networks at the likes of Tennessee, Penn State, Louisville, BYU & South Carolina has raised another $5M from investors for growth opportunities. CEO & Founder Porter Grieve: “We think that right now, schools need to be thinking like entertainment companies. If you want to compete with the big dogs in college sports, you need to be attracting every possible fan you can.” Co-Founder Adam Breneman: “Content and media is going to drive the commercialization of college sports for the foreseeable future. It’s gonna be all about … what schools can become media companies to drive real revenue.” Investors included Crosslink Capital, NBA star & former UCLA standout Kevin Love, as well as Tom Brady-founded media company Shadow Lion. In FY24, Northern Iowa contributed $6.3M from the main campus’ general fund to the Panthers athletics department, the most in program history. UNI Director of University Relations Pete Moris: “The landscape of college athletics has shifted significantly in recent years. UNI leadership recognizes that its athletic department must continue to evolve to remain competitive while being fiscally responsible. … In today’s college athletics landscape, it is not practical for any athletic program outside of the Power Four conferences to be self-sufficient. UNI will continue to provide a level of general fund support to athletics within Iowa Board of Regents’ guidelines.” (link)

Hampton has settled its academic certification process infractions case with the NCAA via a Negotiated Resolution Agreement. The violations occurred during COVID when ”some student-athletes competed while academically ineligible due to unintentional errors in the academic certification process.” Pirates AD Anthony Henderson: “Hampton University has instituted a robust certification model to ensure compliance moving forward. I am also pleased that our student-athletes and programs will continue to compete at the highest level, as no postseason bans, scholarship losses, or recruiting restrictions were imposed.” (link)

Evan Miyakawa divided all preseason top 75 men’s basketball teams based on those with returners playing at least 50% of the team’s minutes this season and those who were below. “The difference in performance is stark: 39% of the teams who are primarily reliant on returning players are exceeding expectations this year, while only 14% of the teams with predominantly newcomers are doing a lot better than expected. By contrast, over 50% of the newcomer-reliant teams are failing expectations, compared to just 14% for teams with a majority of their minutes coming from returning players.” Of the high-major newcomer-reliant teams Miyakawa looked at, only four (Kentucky, West Virginia, Illinois, and Arizona State) are exceeding expectations based on preseason roster talent, while nine (Louisville, USC, Cal, Vanderbilt, Arkansas, TCU, Washington, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State) are performing worse than expected. Meanwhile, “very few returner-heavy teams are struggling, as just Purdue, Notre Dame, and North Carolina are performing worse than expected. Meanwhile, seven teams (Marquette, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Auburn, Florida, Penn State, and Pittsburgh) are thriving relative to their preseason roster talent.” (link)
