USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz continues updating on the latest from the House case: “Lawyers for 10 current or former female athletes who objected to preliminary approval of settlement of House and related cases (approval that eventually was granted by federal judge) have made new filing tonight concerning the settlement's roster limits. Further signal regarding these attorneys' -- and their current/former athlete clients' -- unhappiness with settlement, as it stands. Specifically this has to do with wording of a proposed Q&A document that would directed toward college athletes and made publicly available. But in bigger picture, this may signal a new line of objection to final approval of settlement.” Berkowitz includes screen shots of the filing. (link)

The extended contract for Southern Miss AD Jeremy McClain is for four years and includes a salary of $450K, which is the same as under his previous deal. In addition to his base pay, McClain can earn bonuses running from $5K to $50K, including $10K for a football or men’s basketball conference championship, $10K for playing in a bowl game but $50K for a College Football Playoff appearance and $5K for a cumulative department GPA of 3.0, $10K for 3.1 and $15K for 3.2+. Should private giving top $8M in any fiscal year, he’ll earn $10K, the same amount he’d earn if football season ticket sales exceed 10K, men’s hoops top 1,200 season tickets or baseball goes past 2,500 season tickets in any fiscal year. All four of those metrics in the same year would unlock an extra $25K for McClain. Should USM terminate without cause, he’d be owed the remainder of his base pay while on the flipside, he’d owe the Golden Eagles $100K if he leaves in the first 18 months of the agreement, but just $50K after that. All per CollegeAD. (link)

Tennessee AD Danny White sits down with WBIR, says the Vols’ overall portfolio is “way ahead of schedule” on what he thought could be accomplished when he took the job. On challenges within the current industry landscape: “From a Tennessee perspective we’re doing really well competitive against our peers. From a national perspective, as it relates to the health of college athletics, I don’t know that it could be going worse. We were completely unprepared for the inevitable. The courts have been telling us for over a decade that we need to comply with antitrust law and we need to find some rules of engagement to get this thing organized. We’re the least regulated sport in the world right now and it’s not healthy for student-athletes and it’s not healthy for coaches. The big winners right now are the agents and people who are running in between some of these deals. We have to get it organized and I think everybody knows that. I’ve seen much more productive conversations at the national level about how we move forward as an industry, nationally. It’s way too important to American society. [...] We have to do our job as leaders in college athletics to protect it to make sure it continues to grow. From a television viewership standpoint and popularity standpoint, it’s never been better. People love college sports. But, the structure of it needs some work.” (link)

Texas AD Chris Del Conte was on the Paul Finebaum Show yesterday and lobbied for a single transfer portal window: “The problem is, when you do that one-time portal, because of when school starts, in some cases January 2nd, so there’s just no real ideal time. I’m hoping that we find clarity. The chaos we’ve been living with the last three or four years, it exacerbates itself every single year. Until we get clarity with the settlement and what that looks like and what true NIL looks like, I feel bad for every institution because the pressure is there. You have agents involved…everything that was not normal when we grew up is now here. You just gotta be prepared for something changing every day.” (link, link)

In an email to season ticket holders this week, Auburn AD John Cohen hints at increased football ticket prices in certain sections due in large part to the future revenue sharing model: “Growing revenue opportunities because of additional expenses has become essential for Auburn’s sustained success,” adding that it is “imperative that ticket prices in several seating zones be adjusted due to a new era of NIL.” (link, link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger writes on the overall vibe from Notre Dame last night as the College Football Playoff played its first game on campus & yet the industry’s challenging framework to move more of the postseason to campus sites. Of note: “This is where college football’s postseason belongs. This is where college football lives, where it thrives. It was born in this place, on a sprawling campus as an extracurricular activity (it’s true) for athletic students. And just because the sport’s popularity turned it into a billion-dollar business, just because federal judges and state lawmakers are turning it into a more professional entity, doesn’t mean that college football should lose the greatest gift it provides: college. [...] However, it’s not so simple. College leaders are faced with a delicate balance. There is history and tradition to preserve, rightfully so. Bowl games are one of the hallmarks of the industry, the fabric to college football’s tightly knit sweater. When college football struggled financially (there was a time), it was bowl games that provided a platform and finances. They are not to be shoved aside.” (link)

The Athletic’s Audrey Snyder warns SMU fans traveling to Penn State to be prepared for the expenses and inconveniences that come with visiting “one of college football’s most geographically isolated campuses. … With congested game day traffic patterns, a regional airport with plenty of its own quirks and limited hotel inventory, this place is different, especially for visiting families and fans.” Mustangs Senior Director of Football Operations Josh Nash: “I saw Penn State on the screen and it took me about 15, 20 minutes to realize we’re probably gonna have to go with two planes for this thing. I definitely see what Coach [James] Franklin is talking about now. … The College Football Playoff has done an incredible job of securing the things you need ahead of time, but more than anything, it’s tough for our fans to get to and more importantly for us, our players’ families it’s been really tough.” Snyder breaks down the actual cost of the trip: A roundtrip flight from Dallas to State College: $1,661. Average cost of remaining hotel rooms in State College: $653 per night ($1,306 for a two-night stay). Rental car: $218. Beaver Stadium parking: $106. Game ticket: $66 (cheapest option). Total: $3,357. Complicating matters is PSU’s winter graduation, as Happy Valley Sports and Entertainment Executive Director Eric Engelbarts explains: “You’ll have a mix of parents who have booked graduation hotels months in advance that probably got a decent rate or a typical rate for winter graduation and then you got those who it’s last minute, we just found out we’re gonna be in State College and now we need accommodations. … I was talking to one property and they were like yeah, I sold 70% of my (hotel) inventory for graduation.” More. CBS’ John Talty takes a look back at the long-term effects of Tennessee QB Nico Iamaleava’s multimillion-dollar recruitment, which Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter says created “true above-the-board free agency in college football specifically but all of college athletics really. … People were definitely very surprised by how big that number was and surprised that it happened because that was really the first public information about a high school recruit having an NIL deal with a collective that everyone knew was part of the recruiting process for him committing there.” Talty goes on to recount the fight between the Vols and the NCAA that followed, starting with UT Chancellor Donde Plowman’s letter to the NCAA in which she asserted: “In short, the NCAA is failing.” Talty: “It was just the start of Tennessee's plan to fight back. Behind the scenes, months of work had gone into readying a defense for Iamaleava and the university. This time (following UT’s experience involving former Football HC Jeremy Pruitt), Tennessee knew it had to be proactive as the NCAA kept requesting documents – showing special interest in a private plane that flew Iamaleava from California to Knoxville.” According to headlining attorney Tom Mars, the NCAA wanted to rule Iamaleava ineligible and force UT to disassociate with Spyre Sports. Mars: "The Tennessee lawsuit was an ambush that they walked right into. And they did walk right into it. … One of the biggest mistakes the NCAA made that substantially contributed to the situation they've created and that they're now in is their decision to pursue enforcement action against Spyre Sports based on its relationship with Nico. … It may not have looked pretty from the outside but the people who manage Spyre Sports did a great job of doing what they needed to document the relationship in a way that made it perfectly legitimate under the existing NCAA rules." Thursday’s NCAA Volleyball semifinals were the most-watched on record, averaging 1.1M viewers on ESPN, marking a 4% increase YOY. The Penn State vs. Nebraska match was the most-viewed semifinal ever with 1.2M viewers, making it the third-best women’s college volleyball match viewership of all time. Both semifinal games peaked at 1.4M. Growth in the 18-34 demographic was up 51% and with women up 14%. (link)

USC football signee Matai Tagoa’i has become one of the first athletes to accept part of his NIL earnings in Bitcoin, according to On3’s Pete Nakos, who reports the “four-star linebacker and top-100 recruit in the 2025 cycle has partnered with Strike, a Bitcoin app, to accept part of his NIL payments in Bitcoin.” The deal was facilitated by the USC NIL collective House of Victory. Tagoa’i: “This is a game-changer for me. By taking part of my NIL earnings in Bitcoin, I’m setting myself up for long-term financial growth. I’m grateful to Strike, House of Victory and 3Point0 Labs for helping me take this step. I’m proud to be part of this innovative collaboration that’s redefining the future of college athletics and finance and hope to set an example for other young athletes to think about their financial future.” (link)

The Athletic’s Katie Strang and Andrew Marchand chronicle former ESPN SVP of Production Lee Fitting’s departure from the company and explain: “When he was escorted out of the building by security, some at ESPN’s headquarters groused at what they perceived as indecorous treatment. For all he’d accomplished, Lee Fitting deserved better. There was, in contrast, a subset of current and former ESPN employees who reacted differently.” One woman tells them: “I can’t believe it took this long.” She and others say Fitting frequently made comments “objectifying women, criticizing their physical appearance and making crude jokes, some sexual in nature, in the workplace. … It had a devastating effect on numerous women who believed they had to endure or go along with his conduct to stay employed or ascend at ESPN. Many women in sports media quietly shared their interactions and concerns about Fitting with each other. Some left ESPN in part because of their experience with him.” As College GameDay rose in popularity, so did Fitting’s profile in the company, and Strang and Marchand note: “Many women who worked on College GameDay and under Fitting elsewhere at ESPN — The Athletic spoke to more than 20, including six who participated in the network’s 2023 investigation into Fitting — said that the workplace culture under Fitting featured boorish behavior and offensive remarks, many of them sexual in nature.” Fitting “denied some of the allegations made against him while choosing not to address others. He declined to comment on the broader characterization of him as someone who mistreated women during his tenure at ESPN or why he was let go by the network.” Lots more. (link)

Wichita State AD Kevin Saal has agreed to a three-year extension through the 2029-3030 academic year. The deal includes an annual 8.4% raise for the next six years, bumping what “had been a fixed $350K annual base salary to an annual average salary of $468,300 for the life of the contract,” according to The Wichita Eagle’s Taylor Eldridge, who adds: “Adjusting for the new salary and length, Saal is essentially starting a 6-year contract totaling $2.8M in base salary. With the College Football Playoff starting this weekend, Texas AD Chris Del Conte acknowledges some issues may need to be ironed out but tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “Everyone is going to second guess. The most important thing is we have a playoff. … We can always pick things apart. We went from determining a national champion in the media to a four-team playoff and now to a 12-team playoff. … All things considered, we got it right this year from what it started from.” Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua adds: “Being as objective as I can be as a college football fan, the whole season has been wonderful in that there's been so much intrigue with more teams circling around the playoffs, more storylines, more narratives. Interest in games has been off the charts, and it's been the perfect balance of creating a really exciting playoff format and retaining the importance of the regular season.” Ole Miss AD Keith Carter notes: “In any new process you’re going to learn things that we need to do better. We probably need to expand. I think we need to add more teams. If we saw anything this year, by doing that it creates much more buzz and everything around it. There are some structural things that need to be talked about…but Year 1, it was positive. Like anything, you’ve got to evolve and continue to grow it.” (link)

Alabama AD Greg Byrne clarifies his comments regarding the Crimson Tide’s non-conference football scheduling, telling The Game’s Ryan Fowler: “Here's what I made the mistake on: I probably should have said this, I thought people would understand it, but shame on me for not thinking that thing through – what I can't control is the SEC schedule. But we can control is the non-conference. If there's not going to be a recognition that not all schedules are created equal – next year we have Florida State and Wisconsin, the hay is in the barn on those, we're going to play those games – but do we need to look at down the road maybe not having two P4 games on our schedule like we do?" Former North Carolina Chancellor Holden Thorp joins Ovies + Giglio and says if today’s rules were in place in 2010ish, “Marvin Austin’s tweet wouldn’t have mattered, the NCAA never would’ve shown up and, for all we know, the problems at AFAM might not have been discovered or would have been discovered a different way, who knows…but I think [on the Belichick hire], I picked [Tar Heels AD] Bubba [Cunningham] out of a pool of outstanding people who all became ADs at other big Power 5 schools. I think he's done the best of the group, so I'm proud that I selected him, and there's a whole lot of drama behind this thing, but if ultimately what he said at the press conference was sincere, and he's excited about this and this was his choice, then I'm for it all the way. I'm team Bubba.” UNC’s leadership, Thorp says, has always been complicated and “if you were going to design a system and you looked around the country, you would conclude that North Carolina came up with the most complicated system you could have. And that is that one part of the system is similar to what you have at a lot of universities where the chancellor, who runs the campus, reports to the president, who runs the system, who reports to a board of politically appointed people – that's the board of governors. But in North Carolina you have this additional complication where there's a board of trustees that usually thinks that the chancellor works for them, but actually, on paper and if you look at the statutes, they have very little operational authority over the university – almost none. The reason that they're there is historically, when the system was created, the board of governors was much bigger and when they shrunk it, they didn't want to tell all the people who got kicked off that they had nothing to do, so they put them on these boards of trustees associated with the different campuses.” More from Thorp. Tennessee has raised $574M through its comprehensive My All Campaign, cruising past the initial goal of $500M. UT has set a new goal to raise $750M by the summer of 2026. Vols AD Danny White: "When we set our original goal, we knew it would be challenging. However, when the world's largest and most passionate fan base gets involved, the results are evident. Since our arrival on Rocky Top, we have prioritized strengthening our resources and operating budget, ensuring Tennessee stands shoulder to shoulder with the nation's elite, championship-caliber athletic programs. I want to thank everyone who has committed to this critical campaign. Together, we are steadily progressing toward establishing one of the largest and most competitive budgets and facility infrastructures in all of college sports." (link)

The New Mexico Department of Justice has released a report on the hazing issues involving the New Mexico State men’s basketball team during the 2022-23 season. Among the 35 recommendations made in the report are enhanced coordination, mandatory training, consistent discipline, recruiting scrutiny, leadership commitment and the creation of a resource center. Attorney General Raúl Torrez: “This report is intended to shine a light not only on the specific misconduct by members of NMSU’s basketball team but also the institutional deficiencies that allowed that misconduct to go unaddressed by leaders inside the university. While NMSU has made commendable progress since these incidents occurred, more must be done to ensure accountability and prevent future harm.” (link)

On3’s Joe Tipton catches up with several men’s basketball coaches to discuss the impact of the transfer portal on recruiting, and one Big 12 coach says: “It forces you to make a decision on how you choose to recruit NIL-wise. Whether you think a 23- or 24-year-old can help you win more than an 18-year-old. … Loyalty is no longer a word in men’s college basketball. You’re lucky to keep guys in your program for more than two years now.” Another Big 12 coach notes: “Gone are the days of taking gambles on high school players that have potential but lack the experience. We are signing one, maybe two high school players each year as opposed to four to five each year like the past. It’s a sad but true reality.” A Big Ten coach adds: “Very few players stay at schools for three or four years and develop so we aim for instant impact freshmen. If guys aren’t playing right away they rarely stick through it and develop.” Meanwhile, a high-major coach explains that “we feel a lot of programs are prioritizing the portal over high school kids and we feel if we can find the right kids and families that it could be to our advantage. This might allow us to steal some talented high school kids, get them into our program and develop them like before the portal. Our key has been and will be player retention. We use the portal to fill holes or gaps on our roster. We are not a school that can rebuild and reconstruct our roster due to the academic component at our school.” (link)

Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich takes a look at how ESPN College GameDay will handle being on two campuses (Notre Dame and Ohio State) in 24 hours this weekend, and Coordinating Producer Matthew Garrett says: “They were all pretty strongly in favor of, we have to be there for the first on-campus game.” The ESPN operations team, Garrett adds, are “the best at what they do. They have the ability to move our traveling circus around and set it up wherever we need them to be.” GameDay had already decided on the Friday night slot no matter what, and chose the Saturday evening matchup because it gave the show “the best opportunity to cover the day in totality.” An added bonus, Christovich notes, is that analyst Kirk Herbstreit, “known for his exhausting travel schedules, could stay in one place all day Saturday for the morning show and for the evening call. … Herbstreit landed in South Bend around 4 a.m. with his golden retriever, Peter, who will accompany him throughout the weekend. The rest of the team arrived in South Bend on Friday morning. The show will run from about 3:30 p.m. ET to kickoff, and it will move from Notre Dame’s Library Lawn to inside the stadium at around 7 p.m.” The crew will pack up after halftime and fly to Columbus, arriving at around 1 a.m. Garrett: “You throw something at them that you think might be one bridge too far. And it never is.” (link)

What you are about to read is real and it might be is without a doubt the most glorious idea in the history of sports: “St. John's will host Coming to America Night on Dec. 28 during the men's basketball game versus Delaware, as well as release a Carnesecca Legacy Collection in honor of St. John's winningest head coach and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer. … Fans in attendance for the Red Storm men's basketball contest with Delaware will be treated to a variety of Coming to America Night activities and entertainment. In-arena activations include movie trivia and music, contests and games with 1987-themed prizes, an exclusive exhibit featuring an authentic McDowell's uniform – a nod to the fictional fast-food restaurant in the movie, and custom merchandise such as a specially designed "In the Face" t-shirt, referencing one of the movie's most iconic lines.” The event is the result of a collaboration with cllct. For those participating in the trivia contest, here are some answers: My-T-Sharp, Joe Louis was 75 years old when he fought Rocky Marciano (and lived to be at least 137, according to Frank Sinatra), Soul-Glo, 8507 Queens Boulevard, Randy Watson, Louie Anderson and Samuel L. Costs for operating colleges and universities rose by 3.4% in FY24, according to the latest Higher Education Price Index from the Commonfund Institute. According to Higher Ed Dive’s Ben Unglesbee, the price increases outpaced Commonfund’s preliminary projections this spring of 3% for the year; however, the HEPI showed that inflation has slowed more than half a percentage point from FY23 and is down nearly two percentage points from 2022’s 5.2% inflation rate. Utility prices and costs of supplies and materials slowed the most significantly, after recent years of volatility in those areas. While costs for institutions are cooling, “there is an ongoing trend of inflation rates remaining elevated compared with the previous decade,” according to the report, which also notes: “This is a return to the norm, as HEPI has exceeded CPI in eight of the past 10 years and historically HEPI exceeds CPI.” (link)
