Auburn Executive Deputy AD Jared Benko, who recently served as AD at Georgia Southern, sits down with D1.ticker’s Kristen Eargle on The Career Hustle. The two discuss why the time was right for Benko’s career move, as well as dive into recent AD hiring trends. Benko provides insights into how he approached making decisions during his time as an AD, including who he puts in the room as advisors and why. Benko: “There’s a saying about ‘not taking criticism from those you don’t take counsel from.’ There is a Winston Churchill quote, ‘If you stop and throw a rock at every dog that barks, you will never get where you are going.’ These leadership roles are not easy. You’re always going to have feedback. The feedback that I really and truly care about have invested interest and are in the fox hole with you. At the end of the day, I want to work alongside people that have mutual respect both as a professional and as a person. I just don’t believe you have to sacrifice either one just to make the popular hire or just the hire that you think is going to win the most. That’s a short-term lens.” When it comes to deciding who to consult during coaching searches, Benko explains that first and foremost you want individuals who add value and bring thoughtfulness. “Ultimately I wanted everyone to feel like they had a role in the process because what you also do during those searches is you build equity with people…and so I kind of look at it as an opportunity for people to get off to a fast start, too.” Lots more on Collegiate Sports Connect. CougFan.com’s Barry Bolton indicates Washington State will reduce its Football scholarship allotment from 85 to 79 with the aim of realizing an annualized savings of over $300K. Cougars radio analyst & former standout quarterback Alex Brink passed along the news to Bolton, adds: “They can't compete like that, there is just no way. It doesn't work … You have schools that can go to 105 if they want … and we're at 79? There is literally just no way that you can compete. I was just stunned.” An unnamed “prominent booster” tells Bolton: “If you want to know why he (former HC Jake Dickert) left, it's the pennywise and pound foolish nonsense, like dropping to 79, that Kirk Schulz and the Board of Regents are cramming down throats. [...] the Board of Regents has no idea the football program is one of the single-greatest assets at our university so they’re going to starve it rather than make bold decisions that require critical thinking skills.” (link)

The Notre Dame-affiliated Friends of Notre Dame (FUND) collective, which has announced plans to shut down as the Fighting Irish transitions to the new for-profit RALLY collective & lifestyle agency, generated $20.5M in revenue last year, according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit. More context: “Any leftover funds, that are not otherwise dispersed, could be transferred to another nonprofit, including the university, which operates under the same tax-exempt status. [...] FUND Foundation reported distributing $5.12 million to Notre Dame athletes in 2023, while paying its former executive director Kevin Klau $66,667 and COO Megan Whitt $67,083. The organization ended last year with $14.88 million in net revenue and $21.1 million in net assets, according to its IRS disclosures.” (link)

Ahead of today’s Women’s Volleyball National Championship match between Louisville & Penn State, Wisconsin HC Kelly Sheffield sat down with Coaches.wire’s Daniel Gillman at the AVCA Convention to cover a number of trend lines for the sport. Sheffield: “People have gotten out of their comfort zones. Getting into bigger arenas - bigger basketball and football stadiums - has been really important. TV has responded and come along. Coaches tend to get a bit fearful at times to do things new, getting into a routine a little bit, but getting into new venues has been big. [...] It’ll continue to grow because fans are responding to it, administration is getting behind it and television is intrigued by it.” Sheffield on student-athlete compensation challenges & opportunities: “You can see where we’re headed and you better be out in front of it and have a plan. [...] But now we’re about to transition into revenue sharing and that’s a totally different beast. [...] It’s been a challenge for a lot of athletic departments. You’ve got the athletic department who is out there trying to raise money for facilities. You have coaches out there trying to raise money for their programs. It’s felt a little like everyone is competing against each other, which I don’t think is necessarily a really healthy thing. As we’re getting into revenue sharing, hopefully we don’t have to be fighting over donors, so I think it will be a lot healthier.” As for the coming roster cap: “How do you manage all this? The revenue sharing and roster limits with Title IX? There’s still a lot of court decisions that have to be made. For us, where the roster limit is, that’s where we’re going to try to be.” Lots more, including talking to recruits about the House case & the impact of new compensation models on team chemistry. Georgia Southern announced plans to renovate Baseball’s J.I. Clements Stadium with a $10M new facility in time for the 2026 season. The Wiggins Building will give way to a new 16K+ square-foot facility that will include a new locker room, meeting room, players' lounge, nutrition center, display lobby, coaching offices, training room, as well as indoor batting cages and pitching tunnels with state-of-the-art technology for year-round use. Demolition of the Wiggins Building is set for early January with construction beginning subsequently afterwards. (link)

The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman checks in with several coaches and staffers to discuss issues with the football calendar within the context of Penn State backup QB Beau Pribula’s decision to transfer amid the Nittany Lions’ CFP push. While some, like PSU HC James Franklin and UTSA Jeff Traylor, contend the NCAA puts players in a no-win situation, one personnel staffer says: “We always want a villain in a story, but at this moment, I don’t know if the villain here is the NCAA. A lot of people want to think there is an easy fix to this but there actually is no easy solution.” A Big 12 HC adds: “The problem is that football has long operated as a one-semester sport. But now, because of the Playoff, it is a two-semester sport. The cleanest answer is to move up the season: Take away conference championship games, roll right into the Playoff after the regular season, and finish by the end of December or the first week of January. Then, you have a two-week portal window post-national championship game. But I’m doubtful of that happening. There are obvious issues with finals, school.” Another option is to reexamine the unlimited transfer rule, and a Mountain West HC tells Feldman: “The bigger issue is the unlimited transfer rule because it creates such a high volume of transfers. The Power 4 schools don’t really have to do the same work that Group of 5 schools do because they can outbid us at any point in the process. … The system works really well for like 200 or so kids and the top 20-30 schools, and it is a disaster for everyone else.” More. In order to fix the problem with the transfer portal calendar, On3’s Andy Staples suggests: “Instead of holding 15 spring practices in either February, March or April, adopt an OTA (organized team activities) schedule similar to what NFL teams use – but that schedule doesn’t begin until the second week of May. This is the key, because it allows for an adjustment to the transfer portal window timing that would take pressure off of players and coaches. … Semester-system schools wrap their spring semesters in early May and start their summer sessions in late May. This would allow incoming transfers to practice with their teammates and learn their new schemes. It also would allow those transfers to wrap up any academic needs at their previous school.” Staples also suggests consolidating the transfer windows into one that opens the day after the national championship. “It’s time to take that step back. Some things — the semester system, for example — aren’t going to change. But that doesn’t mean there are no workable solutions. Some things — when schools hold their offseason practices — are easily changed. Start there and work outward.” (link)

President Joe Biden and the White House are expected to “pull back unfinished rules across several agencies if there isn’t enough time to finalize them before Trump takes office,” according to ESPN News Services. Among those could be Biden’s efforts to provide protections for transgender student-athletes and cancel student loans. “For the regulation on transgender students, the Education Department said it was withdrawing the proposal because of ongoing litigation over how Title IX, the landmark law preventing sex discrimination, should handle issues of gender identity. In addition, the department said there were 150,000 public comments with a range of feedback, including suggestions for modifications that needed to be considered. At this point, the department wrote, ‘We do not intend for a final rule to be issued.’” (link)

ESPN’s forthcoming “Flagship” streaming service may be the “goldilocks product offering that many are hoping for in Bristol,” according to a note from MoffettNathanson Senior Research Analyst Robert Fishman. Via Puck’s John Ourand: “Fishman predicts that Flagship will amass 1M paid subscribers by the end of 2026 and as many as 3M by 2030, all paying around $25 a month, or $300 per year…at least at first. In particular, he estimated the service would bring in $200M+ in subscriber revenue the year after next (remember, those 1M subscribers will accumulate over the course of 12 months) and around $20M in advertising revenue. … Projecting these numbers out, the service could likely do well over a billion dollars in annual revenue by the end of the decade—a nice number, but pretty small in the grand scheme of things, and less than the network pays for any of its major sports packages. (As a reminder, ESPN made $16B in 2022 and amassed about $2.9B in profit.)” ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro “desperately needs to move ESPN toward the future, but he cannot yank the cord on cable too quickly.” Meanwhile, Puck’s Bill Cohan notes that Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav hired three investment banks (J.P. Morgan, Evercore, and Guggenheim Securities) and two high-powered law firms (Kirkland & Ellis and Wachtell Lipton) to aid in the company’s reorg. Cohan: “You don’t need three M&A advisors and two legal advisors just to reorganize the divisions of your company. Instead, you pay their considerable fees so they can meticulously analyze what a spinoff, sale, or some other strategic separation of the [WBD cable networks] would look like, including when and how to announce it, how much debt to pile on to it, and whether that business should try to bring in a private equity partner. And, of course, you don’t include a detail like this in a press release unless you want the market to know exactly what you’re doing.” More via Ourand. (link)

The NFL has no plans to scale back its commitment to DEI initiatives, according to Commissioner Roger Goodell, who said during last week’s league meeting: “We didn’t get into this because it was a trend, and we’re not getting out of it because it’s a trend. We’re in it because it makes the NFL better.” NFL SVP/Chief Inclusion and Diversity Officer Jonathan Beane acknowledges the league’s response to issues in the past, such as peaceful protests led by former San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick, resulted in backlash from fans who view DEI unfavorably today, but adds: “That is something that we see as a part of our history. It’s not something where we try to step away from and act like it didn’t happen.” Beane also contends the “perception of the NFL has gone up…because of a lot of the really hard work done as it relates to inclusion.” Front Office Sports’ A.J. Perez points out that “the uproar over the kneeling and the rhetoric from Donald Trump during his first presidential run didn’t actually impact viewership much in 2016. TV ratings recovered and have been on an upward trajectory since. Plus, the social-media-fueled furor over DEI is about 10 decibels lower than what the league dealt with eight years ago.” Beane goes on to explain that “we’re looking for reach and growth as a league. We’re looking to grow flag football. We’re looking to grow internationally and be a true global brand. In order to do that, we’re going to continue to focus on developing our people, whether it’s having marketing that is welcoming and inclusive, using the league as a unifier – a platform to welcome all of us to the game of football.” (link)

USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz continues updating on the latest from the House case: “Lawyers for 10 current or former female athletes who objected to preliminary approval of settlement of House and related cases (approval that eventually was granted by federal judge) have made new filing tonight concerning the settlement's roster limits. Further signal regarding these attorneys' -- and their current/former athlete clients' -- unhappiness with settlement, as it stands. Specifically this has to do with wording of a proposed Q&A document that would directed toward college athletes and made publicly available. But in bigger picture, this may signal a new line of objection to final approval of settlement.” Berkowitz includes screen shots of the filing. (link)

The extended contract for Southern Miss AD Jeremy McClain is for four years and includes a salary of $450K, which is the same as under his previous deal. In addition to his base pay, McClain can earn bonuses running from $5K to $50K, including $10K for a football or men’s basketball conference championship, $10K for playing in a bowl game but $50K for a College Football Playoff appearance and $5K for a cumulative department GPA of 3.0, $10K for 3.1 and $15K for 3.2+. Should private giving top $8M in any fiscal year, he’ll earn $10K, the same amount he’d earn if football season ticket sales exceed 10K, men’s hoops top 1,200 season tickets or baseball goes past 2,500 season tickets in any fiscal year. All four of those metrics in the same year would unlock an extra $25K for McClain. Should USM terminate without cause, he’d be owed the remainder of his base pay while on the flipside, he’d owe the Golden Eagles $100K if he leaves in the first 18 months of the agreement, but just $50K after that. All per CollegeAD. (link)

Tennessee AD Danny White sits down with WBIR, says the Vols’ overall portfolio is “way ahead of schedule” on what he thought could be accomplished when he took the job. On challenges within the current industry landscape: “From a Tennessee perspective we’re doing really well competitive against our peers. From a national perspective, as it relates to the health of college athletics, I don’t know that it could be going worse. We were completely unprepared for the inevitable. The courts have been telling us for over a decade that we need to comply with antitrust law and we need to find some rules of engagement to get this thing organized. We’re the least regulated sport in the world right now and it’s not healthy for student-athletes and it’s not healthy for coaches. The big winners right now are the agents and people who are running in between some of these deals. We have to get it organized and I think everybody knows that. I’ve seen much more productive conversations at the national level about how we move forward as an industry, nationally. It’s way too important to American society. [...] We have to do our job as leaders in college athletics to protect it to make sure it continues to grow. From a television viewership standpoint and popularity standpoint, it’s never been better. People love college sports. But, the structure of it needs some work.” (link)

Texas AD Chris Del Conte was on the Paul Finebaum Show yesterday and lobbied for a single transfer portal window: “The problem is, when you do that one-time portal, because of when school starts, in some cases January 2nd, so there’s just no real ideal time. I’m hoping that we find clarity. The chaos we’ve been living with the last three or four years, it exacerbates itself every single year. Until we get clarity with the settlement and what that looks like and what true NIL looks like, I feel bad for every institution because the pressure is there. You have agents involved…everything that was not normal when we grew up is now here. You just gotta be prepared for something changing every day.” (link, link)

In an email to season ticket holders this week, Auburn AD John Cohen hints at increased football ticket prices in certain sections due in large part to the future revenue sharing model: “Growing revenue opportunities because of additional expenses has become essential for Auburn’s sustained success,” adding that it is “imperative that ticket prices in several seating zones be adjusted due to a new era of NIL.” (link, link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger writes on the overall vibe from Notre Dame last night as the College Football Playoff played its first game on campus & yet the industry’s challenging framework to move more of the postseason to campus sites. Of note: “This is where college football’s postseason belongs. This is where college football lives, where it thrives. It was born in this place, on a sprawling campus as an extracurricular activity (it’s true) for athletic students. And just because the sport’s popularity turned it into a billion-dollar business, just because federal judges and state lawmakers are turning it into a more professional entity, doesn’t mean that college football should lose the greatest gift it provides: college. [...] However, it’s not so simple. College leaders are faced with a delicate balance. There is history and tradition to preserve, rightfully so. Bowl games are one of the hallmarks of the industry, the fabric to college football’s tightly knit sweater. When college football struggled financially (there was a time), it was bowl games that provided a platform and finances. They are not to be shoved aside.” (link)

The Athletic’s Audrey Snyder warns SMU fans traveling to Penn State to be prepared for the expenses and inconveniences that come with visiting “one of college football’s most geographically isolated campuses. … With congested game day traffic patterns, a regional airport with plenty of its own quirks and limited hotel inventory, this place is different, especially for visiting families and fans.” Mustangs Senior Director of Football Operations Josh Nash: “I saw Penn State on the screen and it took me about 15, 20 minutes to realize we’re probably gonna have to go with two planes for this thing. I definitely see what Coach [James] Franklin is talking about now. … The College Football Playoff has done an incredible job of securing the things you need ahead of time, but more than anything, it’s tough for our fans to get to and more importantly for us, our players’ families it’s been really tough.” Snyder breaks down the actual cost of the trip: A roundtrip flight from Dallas to State College: $1,661. Average cost of remaining hotel rooms in State College: $653 per night ($1,306 for a two-night stay). Rental car: $218. Beaver Stadium parking: $106. Game ticket: $66 (cheapest option). Total: $3,357. Complicating matters is PSU’s winter graduation, as Happy Valley Sports and Entertainment Executive Director Eric Engelbarts explains: “You’ll have a mix of parents who have booked graduation hotels months in advance that probably got a decent rate or a typical rate for winter graduation and then you got those who it’s last minute, we just found out we’re gonna be in State College and now we need accommodations. … I was talking to one property and they were like yeah, I sold 70% of my (hotel) inventory for graduation.” More. CBS’ John Talty takes a look back at the long-term effects of Tennessee QB Nico Iamaleava’s multimillion-dollar recruitment, which Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter says created “true above-the-board free agency in college football specifically but all of college athletics really. … People were definitely very surprised by how big that number was and surprised that it happened because that was really the first public information about a high school recruit having an NIL deal with a collective that everyone knew was part of the recruiting process for him committing there.” Talty goes on to recount the fight between the Vols and the NCAA that followed, starting with UT Chancellor Donde Plowman’s letter to the NCAA in which she asserted: “In short, the NCAA is failing.” Talty: “It was just the start of Tennessee's plan to fight back. Behind the scenes, months of work had gone into readying a defense for Iamaleava and the university. This time (following UT’s experience involving former Football HC Jeremy Pruitt), Tennessee knew it had to be proactive as the NCAA kept requesting documents – showing special interest in a private plane that flew Iamaleava from California to Knoxville.” According to headlining attorney Tom Mars, the NCAA wanted to rule Iamaleava ineligible and force UT to disassociate with Spyre Sports. Mars: "The Tennessee lawsuit was an ambush that they walked right into. And they did walk right into it. … One of the biggest mistakes the NCAA made that substantially contributed to the situation they've created and that they're now in is their decision to pursue enforcement action against Spyre Sports based on its relationship with Nico. … It may not have looked pretty from the outside but the people who manage Spyre Sports did a great job of doing what they needed to document the relationship in a way that made it perfectly legitimate under the existing NCAA rules." Lots more. (link)

Thursday’s NCAA Volleyball semifinals were the most-watched on record, averaging 1.1M viewers on ESPN, marking a 4% increase YOY. The Penn State vs. Nebraska match was the most-viewed semifinal ever with 1.2M viewers, making it the third-best women’s college volleyball match viewership of all time. Both semifinal games peaked at 1.4M. Growth in the 18-34 demographic was up 51% and with women up 14%. (link)

USC football signee Matai Tagoa’i has become one of the first athletes to accept part of his NIL earnings in Bitcoin, according to On3’s Pete Nakos, who reports the “four-star linebacker and top-100 recruit in the 2025 cycle has partnered with Strike, a Bitcoin app, to accept part of his NIL payments in Bitcoin.” The deal was facilitated by the USC NIL collective House of Victory. Tagoa’i: “This is a game-changer for me. By taking part of my NIL earnings in Bitcoin, I’m setting myself up for long-term financial growth. I’m grateful to Strike, House of Victory and 3Point0 Labs for helping me take this step. I’m proud to be part of this innovative collaboration that’s redefining the future of college athletics and finance and hope to set an example for other young athletes to think about their financial future.” (link)

The Athletic’s Katie Strang and Andrew Marchand chronicle former ESPN SVP of Production Lee Fitting’s departure from the company and explain: “When he was escorted out of the building by security, some at ESPN’s headquarters groused at what they perceived as indecorous treatment. For all he’d accomplished, Lee Fitting deserved better. There was, in contrast, a subset of current and former ESPN employees who reacted differently.” One woman tells them: “I can’t believe it took this long.” She and others say Fitting frequently made comments “objectifying women, criticizing their physical appearance and making crude jokes, some sexual in nature, in the workplace. … It had a devastating effect on numerous women who believed they had to endure or go along with his conduct to stay employed or ascend at ESPN. Many women in sports media quietly shared their interactions and concerns about Fitting with each other. Some left ESPN in part because of their experience with him.” As College GameDay rose in popularity, so did Fitting’s profile in the company, and Strang and Marchand note: “Many women who worked on College GameDay and under Fitting elsewhere at ESPN — The Athletic spoke to more than 20, including six who participated in the network’s 2023 investigation into Fitting — said that the workplace culture under Fitting featured boorish behavior and offensive remarks, many of them sexual in nature.” Fitting “denied some of the allegations made against him while choosing not to address others. He declined to comment on the broader characterization of him as someone who mistreated women during his tenure at ESPN or why he was let go by the network.” Lots more. (link)
