Our thoughts and prayers are with Oregon State AD Barnes who was hospitalized last night following a “medical event” while attending an awards ceremony at his alma mater, Fresno State, where the former Bulldogs MBB student-athlete was set to receive an award. A statement from the Pac-12: “Scott Barnes is a dear friend, trusted colleague and incredibly loved man across the Oregon State and Pac-12 families and the entire college sports community. Our thoughts are with Scott and his family at this time.” (link)

Colorado Chancellor DiStefano tells USA Today’s Schrotenboer he’d like to see the league get back to 12 members once USC & UCLA depart, as well as voicing a preference for a five-year media rights deals as opposed to a longer tie-up. “I think in five years we’ll get a much better feel for streaming services. That’s changing so much, and it’s going to put us in a position to pick up some things that maybe we’re not going to get at this point.” DiStefano also talks directly about the potential additions of San Diego State & SMU saying the Aztecs “did really well in basketball. They have a new stadium in football, a good Southern California market. Dallas is a good area for recruiting.” (link)

CBS’ Dodd writes on the continued growth of Las Vegas as a sports capital, which was furthered this week as the Oakland A’s are getting closer to moving to Sin City. Former UNLV/Arizona AD Livengood on UNLV’s positioning as a byproduct: “I think they're sitting in a great spot. Not only is it an institution that has improved themselves academically … athletically, I don't think there is any question the new football staff has a great chance to hit the ground running.” On additional realignment storlines, Dodd says of Fresno State: “Somehow, calls from the Fresno State administration to the Big 12 have been misconstrued as interest from the Big 12. At this point, there is no Big 12 interest in the Bulldogs, seemingly not even as a fallback option if other expansion falls through.” (link)

Kentucky AD Barnhart joins LEARFIELD University Partnership Group EVP Hamilton on From the Chair to discuss several topics, including his five guiding principles, which include: you must have character and heart; you must have great integrity; you must be knowledgeable; you must be good stewards of what you’re given, particularly talent and time; and having a competitive heart. “The concept of the heart and the brain working together to create the person and the people that we want to be is really important to me.” Barnhart goes on to say “It’s not your intentions that get people to follow you. It is your actions. I’m not trying to win friendships in this thing. I want their respect.” Barnhart also talks about the importance of resources matching expectations, saying when he arrived in Lexington “we were dead last in a lot of areas in the SEC” in a state with limited financial resources. The first area the Wildcats invested in was people, and Barnhart explains keeping people at UK has been integral to the Wildcats’ success. Lots more. (link)

The Tennessee House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 0475 by a vote of 75-7 after the Senate unanimously approved it earlier in the week. The bill would change the state’s sports betting tax rate from 20% of adjusted gross gaming revenue to 2% of total operator handle less canceled or voided bets. Should it become law, it would mean the Volunteer State is the only one in the country to tax sports betting operators on handle instead of revenue. It now heads to Governor Lee’s desk. (link)

Meanwhile, ESPN’s Coello: “Documents obtained by ESPN show [New Mexico State WBB Director of Operations Ross] was found to have sexually harassed a student in the past year, and they reflect at least three other ongoing Title IX investigations involving incidents in the arena that houses athletic offices and an apparent lack of scrutiny in officials' hiring practices. All of that is in addition to recent allegations that a former football coach physically abused players under the threat of taking away their scholarships.” Additional context from the Las Cruces Sun News: “Ross was the Director of Basketball Operations last season, but his contract is set to expire at the end of April and will not be renewed.” (link, link)

Coryell goes on to talk about sports sponsorship, saying the Bobcats have no current plans to add any teams but acknowledges there are some “great options out there. Beach volleyball would be one that if we were to expand I think we’d be interested in looking at. … But right now on the table we don’t have plans to do that, but that’s something we always keep an eye on, and if we could, we’d love to add at some point.” Full podcast. The Dallas Morning News’ Jankowski and Rodrigues examine whether the Texas Senate’s bill to curtail universities’ DEI efforts will impact recruiting, and Arizona State professor/sports historian Jackson says if nothing else, it opens up those universities to negative recruiting. “If I want to increase my chances, I might mention that there’s been this effort in the Texas Legislature to tear down these programs that are intended to serve you.” Houston professor Hawkins, who specializes in race in athletics, adds: “You have to think as a parent, would you want your son or daughter to compete in a state that’s trying to take the state back 200 or 300 years instead of progressively moving it toward the 21st century?” (link)

Under Armour founder & chairman Plank was on the stage yesterday at the Footwear News CEO Summit. Plank on the company’s decision-making lens: “First and foremost, is it going to inspire our team? Decision lens two is ask yourself, will the decision we’re about to make give confidence to our key stakeholders, our shareholders? No. 3 is, will the decision instill fear in our competition? Will it make our competition say, ‘Why didn’t we think of that?’ Unless it’s check, check, check on all three, we’re not going to do it.” Plank also points to the new UA SlipSpeed shoes, which he wore during the interview & has a convertible heel design: “We think this is one of the new directions and not just a trend in footwear. We think it’s something that’s here to stay. This is an innovation that was actually found from young people, watching my daughter come home at night and seeing that all these kids are crushing the back of their heels.” (link)

On the media landscape overall, MoffettNathanson’s Nathanson tells The Athletic’s Deitsch that “I think we’re cutting the cord down to 50M subs and I’ve not seen a streaming model, aside from Netflix, that makes any sense. Where this is going, I think, is that everyone was fortunate to do the (sports) deals they did before cord-cutting really started to accelerate. Why we’re still relatively bullish on places like Fox and Disney having a sports-led programming strategy is that I see stickiness in advertising. As long as you don’t do anything dumb on rights, you have a business that will be relatively healthy in terms of getting paid by distributors.” (link)

The Crimson Collective has launched to support Utah football as Utes HC Whittingham recently remarked: “We probably lost six to eight recruits that we would have gotten had we had more resources available to us.” The new collective has the endorsement of the athletic department & its board is full of notable names including key donors & high-profile former letterwinners. More Whittingham: “Yeah, we got a late start, there’s no doubt about it, and we’re playing catch-up right now. Hopefully, we can get things up and running sooner rather than later and get ourselves into a situation where we can be competitive in that arena.” (link)

The Stanford-focused Lifetime Cardinal collective has launched to support Cardinal student-athletes NIL endeavors, and Founder/former men’s soccer student-athlete Thorpe says he was spurred to action after being “wildly frustrated” by the university’s reluctance to go down this path. “Why are people standing around looking at each other? We’ve got to do something, and we have the alumni base and wherewithal to build something better than anyone else.” Earlier this spring, Lifetime Cardinal, which has been seeded with nearly $4M, made the first of two $5K payments to every football player, and ~20 top players will earn up to $50K, according to On3’s Maisel. Meanwhile, a sister collective, Cardinal One, paid each of the men’s basketball players $50K at the outset of the 2022-23 season. Thorpe says the collective will go beyond providing access to NIL money and include mentorship and development opportunities. (link)
