ESPN’s David Hale examines the state of Group of 5 football, and Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez acknowledges there’s “a gap between us and them. There's always been a gap. It's gotten wider, but as long as this expanded CFP has access, it doesn't matter what brand or conference you're from, that's what makes us relevant and allows us to compete." Hale subsequently notes that “multiple Power 4 athletic directors who spoke to ESPN suggested the industry was leaving money on the table by handing a [College Football Playoff spot to a program that was unlikely to draw viewership or even play a competitive game.” The numbers seem to confirm the aforementioned gap is widening, as Hale notes that non-power conference football teams had a winning percentage of .240 against P4/5 teams from 2006-12. That figure fell to .189 from 2014-21 and again to .142 in 2022-24. Furthermore, wins against P4/5 teams with records of 7-5 or better have fallen from 12 in 2021 to five in 2022, seven in 2023 and just one in 2024. AAC Commissioner Tim Pernetti says he's not worried about being left out of the CFP, “but he also suggested any attempt to keep Group of 5 teams out of the playoff would result in quick antitrust litigation.” Pernetti also reiterates his support for an NIT-style G5 playoff that could possibly include teams from the P4 who didn’t make the CFP as a way to boost revenue. "There's four [conferences] that are going to get left out of the CFP and will be assigned to whatever bowl tie-in they have. There's no guarantee they have something truly meaningful to play for in the postseason. … What's the downside of more meaningful postseason football if it's additive?" The idea still faces pushback from those like San Diego State AD John David Wicker, who says: “I'm not interested in playing in a G5 playoff. I'm interested in the College Football Playoff." Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey shares an update on the missing goalposts from the Broncos’ conference championship victory: “We are working with campus on one of the posts as a fraternity has it (signed by @PostMalone 🔥🙏🏼). Most of it has been cut up already and God knows where it is 🤷♂️ Great memory for them! Epic. The other one…have had a few people tell me a season ticket holder has it and is trying to sell it. Through a contact, this person has my number. Willing to discuss. If you know who this person is, please connect me. Good for both for getting it out of the river…We believe both were done the night of, which is impressive as it was a cold one. A night Bronco Nation won’t forget! Disappointed we couldn’t get them back. Would have been a great opportunity to support student-athletes, department & football program. If people kept it for personal collection, good for them! If they’re trying to monetize it for personal gain, doesn’t sit well and I won’t forget.” Dickey says the athletic department would have liked to cut them up to sell with proceeds supporting the program. FIU AD Scott Carr joined AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to offer insight into developing an institutional brand through storytelling. Carr, who ascended to the AD chair via his background in ticketing, marketing, events and promotion and fundraising, discusses his strategies for external communication, including his mantra: “If it’s not on social media, then it didn’t happen.” As part of his quest to consistently and creatively tell FIU’s story, Carr and his team developed a special Miami Vice-inspired football uniform, the reveal of which garnered 1M+ views in less than 24 hours. Carr: “If you’re not telling people who you are and what you’re accomplishing – whether that’s academics, whether that’s competitively, whether that’s fundraising or ticket sales – then you’re not doing your job.” Carr and Brown also discuss how to tell a student-athlete’s story when they’re only in a program for a year due to transfer portal pressures; how to make the fan experience a storytelling opportunity; and why it’s valuable to develop a Hall of Fame for a young program. Carr says the youth of the school and the athletic department were part of what attracted him to FIU and he plans to lean into that when creating a Hall of Fame: “There are so many reasons to have a Hall of Fame. Part of it is one of the things you learn at FIU is you'll talk to people and they'll tell you they love their experience. They [got a] great education that launched them and then you say, ‘Well when was the last time you were back on campus?’ And it's been like 20 years and you're like, ‘Well, come back.’ But there has to be that draw and so we really want to focus on a Hall of Fame and having that induction ceremony to draw people [back to campus].” More on ADU. Penn State Football HC James Franklin believes “one of the most important things we can do is, let's get a commissioner of college football that is waking up every single morning and going to bed every single night making decisions that's in the best interest of college football. I think Nick Saban would be the obvious choice if we made that decision. Now, Nick will probably call me tonight and say, 'Don't do this,' but I think he's the obvious choice, right?" While speaking with the media ahead of this week’s Fiesta Bowl, Franklin also proposed eliminating conference championship games so the season is shorter and the College Football Playoff selection committee can have a more fair comparison. "When you have a committee sitting in a room trying to compare apples to apples, or oranges to oranges, it's hard to do that when not everybody's playing under the same model. Get rid of the conference championship game. That will shorten the season and help with the window a little bit." Franklin went on to suggest that every conference play the same number of league games and start the season a week earlier to "take some stress off of the academic calendar,” adding: “God forbid we talk about academics, right? … Maybe I'm old school and maybe I'm a traditionalist, but I still believe in the model. Rather than just say this is a problem, I thought I would throw out a few recommendations, but I think one of the most important things we can do is let's get a commissioner of college football." If the House settlement is approved and revenue-sharing is capped, third-party NIL money “will be a recruiting differentiator,” according to Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter, who explains there’s “confusion on how third-party NIL deals will be viewed. … One area I’ve seen a lot of misinformation on is which third-party deals will be subject to a fair market value analysis. Some believe all third-party deals will. That’s not correct. Only deals with ‘associated entities or individuals’ will undergo the FMV analysis. … So who will qualify as associated entities & individuals? We know NIL collectives and ‘boosters’ will. Beyond that, we’ll have to wait & see until the review process begins.” Regarding deals that are subject to an FMV analysis, Winter submits: “I think the FMV analysis system is going to be subject to some litigation. I can see some boosters and collectives not being happy when their deals are rejected. It will also be interesting to watch what happens when boosters and collectives get a sense of what values the new system will allow for athlete deals. I expect we’ll see a lot of deals right at those values. Schools that have boosters willing to fund collective deals at these levels, and that get good at acquiring deals for athletes with third parties that aren’t associated entities or individuals, will be able to essentially guarantee payments above the cap.” (link); Headlining sports attorney Tom Mars adds: “Whatever one might think about the House v. NCAA settlement, the NCAA retaining an accounting firm to determine the FMV value of college athletes is nothing short of an invitation for wealthy donors to sue the NCAA for illegal interference with their third-party NIL deals.” (link)

Atlantic 10 Asst. Commissioner for Championship Administration Meghan Bertovich sits down with Connect's Steph Garcia Cichosz at the 2024 Women Leaders Convention to talk about growing up within college athletics and pursuing a career through the conference office. Bertovich, the daughter of former Atlantic 10 Commissioner Ron Bertovich, discusses the secret to putting on a world-class championship event, offers advice to first-time convention attendees, reflects on her process for evaluating career opportunities, and talks about managing conflict as a team leader. To forestall any perception that she bounces around arbitrarily between jobs, Bertovich says she tries to stay at a new post for at least three to five years and explains: “Plus, I also find it takes a year to get acclimated and then a year to kind of find yourself and figure out your own processes in the company. And then by year three it's like, ‘Okay, I know what I'm doing and that's really the year I try to evaluate ‘Is this really for me?’ Because just going in you might not like the people, you might not like the work, but you might not also understand it. So, things might change – things will always change.” Bertovich on achieving a work-life balance: “I don't have balance. There’s times of the year where I’m 90% work, 10% personal and other times of the year it’s more like 60/40. So, I just find that I surround myself with a great support system and really rely on them to say, ‘Hey, I’m really not in a good place today. Can you help me out and do a couple more things than I would normally ask you to do?” More on Connect. (link)

In the second of a two-part sit down with MB Sports’ Matt Banker, former Duke AD and current Huron Consulting Senior Advisor Kevin White talks about the four characteristics key to AD leadership, the impact of Coach Mike Krzyzewski and what it was like in the selection committee room when the decision was made to cancel the 2020 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. White also shares some never-before-told stories from his new book: The Good Sport: Reflections on a Full Life In College Sports. White recalls taking over as AD at Arizona State and being approached by football student-athletes Jake Plummer and Pat Tillman with a list of grievances on behalf of ASU student-athletes from across all sports. The two met White in the parking lot and walked him into his office early on in his tenure and left him with a yellow legal pad full of improvements they wanted to see. White: “I believe I kept [the list] in the top drawer of my desk and every once in a while I’d peruse the list to see if we were making any progress. And, quite frankly, if we didn’t make progress, I would’ve heard about it at least by Pat, and probably by Jake as well.” White says he consequently found himself at Notre Dame and Duke being intentional about finding ways to interact with the student-athlete population. “I mean, you’re crazy if you don’t, quite frankly. The matriculants in your programs can tell you absolutely anything and everything in terms of how to make the experience better. They’re invaluable and so I always try to do that.” In fact, during one of his last years at Duke, White invited each student-athlete to schedule an appointment to meet with him directly and while the Blue Devils “ran out of school year” before he could meet with all of them, he met with around 450 and learned a “hell of a lot about what we were good at and what we were not good at.” Lots more on Collegiate Sports Connect. The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner argues Washington State’s hire of a new President - not the hire of its new Football HC (more on that below) - is even more crucial to the future of pigskin in Pullman: “Undergraduate enrollment in Pullman has plunged from 18,346 in the fall of 2019 to just 14,346 in the fall of 2024 — a decline of 22 percent, according to WSU data. More ominous: Enrollment for out-of-state and international students, who pay full-cost tuition, has plunged 37 percent over that span. [...] The budget for 2025-26 will be finalized well before the next president takes charge. But Schulz’s successor will have authority over athletic department spending in the 2026-27 academic year — the first football season of the rebuilt Pac-12. [...] The future of WSU football is not about one-time allocations. It’s not about a $500,000 expenditure here or a $1 million outlay there. Success in the rebuilt Pac-12 depends on the commitment of millions of new dollars over the remainder of the decade.” (link)

Stanford professor emeritus Roger Noll’s prediction more than a decade ago that the NCAA’s economic restrictions on players caused “inefficient substitution” through “excessive expenditures on other inputs” may have been foreshadowing. Chief among those inputs, he argued in the O’Bannon case, were the skyrocketing increases in FBS coaching salaries over the previous 25 years. Noll at the time wrote: “A substantial part of the increase in coaches’ salaries would not have occurred if the compensation of players would have been determined by competition among colleges for their services, just as the compensation of coaches is determined by competition.” Now that several HCs have agreed to restructured contracts and potential pay cuts, Noll tells Sportico’s Jason Clinkscales and Daniel Libit: “I’m not surprised by it, and I expect it to continue (and) to be substantially greater in the next two or three years. The reality is right now, a big chunk of the value of coaches is being undermined by the changes in the NCAA rules that are going on. … In the old regime, one of the things you were buying in a coach was his ability to attract good players who would be paid much less than the contribution to the team. And what that succeeded in doing is transferring the value of the best players from the players to the coach, because the players follow the coach around like when Deion Sanders went to Colorado. Twenty-some of his players went with him.” Noll goes on to say that “if the House settlement is introduced, the value of college football coaches and college basketball coaches, but especially college football coaches, is going to go down substantially. I do suspect the era of the $10M football coach is over.” (link)

Heitner Legal’s Darren Heitner provides additional details on the insurance policies for some of the Colorado football student-athletes that were announced last week: “The largest insurance policies in CFB history were created for Colorado players by Matthew Vuckovich of Paradigm Gilbert. Belief is that Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter each have coverage of over $18 million in Permanent Total Disability, which will extend thru the NFL Draft.” (link); When asked about what he would change about college football, Buffs HC Deion Sanders: “Financial literacy classes should be mandatory so these kids understand how to manage their money when they get their money. And I think there should be a pay scale. There should be structure. It can’t be just Tom, Dick and Harry gets this because he had a great year somewhere else, then that throws off the chemistry and the structure of the whole team. … I think the NFL has handled it right and we need to mimic the NFL when it comes to that because right now we’re not pros, but we’re semi pros. … If we don’t get a hold of it, it’s going to keep going left. And the teams that don’t have the budgets, like us, it’s going to be hard to sit up here in front of you and make it to a playoff game because now it turns into pay per view. And we don’t want that. At this age and stage, it’s supposed to be amateurism, and it’s not. You want them to get compensated correctly for their talents, but it has to be structured." (link)

The Pop-Tarts Bowl did it again…from Frosted Strawberry’s resurrection to Cinnamon Roll’s sacrifice and Pop-Tart ice cream sandwiches for the media to ESPN’s Cole Cubelic donning a mascot outfit on the sidelines…the bowl game continues to set the bar for activation & pure fun. Pop-Tarts Senior Director of Brand Marketing Heidi Ray: “When we stepped into last year, the strategy was really 'How do we tackle traditional college football rituals and turn them on their heads?' It's true to the DNA of the [Pop-Tarts] brand that we bust convention.” (link, link, link, link, link)

The Athletic’s Ralph Russo shares lessons from coaches who took under-the-radar QBs out of the portal this season and found success: “Be prepared. Know what skill set fits not just your scheme but your culture. Identify your guy, get that guy. Maybe most important: Be self-aware.” Indiana HC Curt Cignetti: “You got to really have a pretty realistic idea of who you got a shot to get.” Russo notes that "personnel staffers granted anonymity to discuss the market told The Athletic that although the top available quarterbacks have made upwards of $1M in recent years, if a team has a productive starter making six figures, it should generally be viewed as a good deal. Blake Lawrence, whose company Opendorse said about $100K per victory is a solid return for a starting quarterback at the Power 4 level. Anything better than that is a bargain.” Minnesota Director of Player Personnel Marcus Hendrickson says he graded roughly 25 QBs, and “I go down to some of these guys on the bottom list, I’m like, you know, probably can’t afford this guy.” The Gophers landed on Max Brosmer, who led the team to a 7-5 season, and Hendrickson says: “I think other teams probably waited on Max. We saw what fit us, and we went for it and we attacked it, and we got him committed. Whereas I think other other schools liked Max. I think other schools really liked Max, but they wanted to see, because the FCS portal (opened) a week earlier than the FBS portal (in 2023). I think other teams wanted to see what else kind of came to fruition.” Cincinnati HC Scott Satterfield: “If you hesitate, you will not get ’em.” (link)

SMAC Entertainment Co-Founder/CEO Constance Schwartz-Morini joins Puck’s John Ourand to discuss the changing media market and her roster of high-profile clients, including fellow SMAC Co-Founder/Fox NFL analyst Michael Strahan, Fox reporter Erin Andrews and Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders. Ourand first comments on Netflix’s acquisition of the U.S. broadcast rights for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup and pushes back on the narrative that this development is good for linear TV. “There’s no way to spin that. But it’s not fatal either. Netflix has always said that it’s interested in one-off events like the NFL Christmas Day games or the Tom Brady roast or the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul fight. This is another example of that. Netflix picked up the rights to a four-week tournament that doesn't even start for another three years, and it will almost certainly rely on the world feed to produce the games. Plus, it picked up the rights at a fraction of the cost that it would have paid to get in with, say, the NBA. So, look, my head is not in the sand with Netflix. It’s clear to see where this trendline is heading, but while Netflix may have more than a toe in the sports waters, it’s still only wading. It’s not all in.” Schwartz-Morini discusses Fox’s marketing plan around Coach Prime upon his arrival in Colorado and recalls President of Marketing Robert Gottlieb telling her: “We're really leaning in; we just bought a bunch of cowboy hats, sunglasses and merch and we're going to be taking Deion lookalikes around the country. We also have a Ralphie lookalike. I was like, ‘This is genius,’ and then when all of a sudden you started seeing all these people pop up, not just during the college coverage, but on the NFL coverage, I was like, ‘This is larger than life.” More, including the philosophy of SMAC and the genesis of Prime on Prime.
