D3sports’ Coleman camps with D3.ticker/Connect’s Grassi to dive into the litany of changes occurring in the Lone Star state in the ASC, SCAC and SAA. With the ASC looking for a new commissioner and set to be down to four FB-playing members when the dust settles, Coleman states the league needs “someone who can recruit, for lack of a better term, schools from other associations, other divisions to come into your conference … or completely remake your conference.” The pair dig into other possibilities, such as new upstart programs or a possible merger or alliance. On the SAA’s addition of Southwestern and Trinity (TX), Coleman notes the move did surprise him a little given the increase to travel for members, but “having that stability, having to not seek out extra non-conference football games to schedule or making your scheduling easier in a bunch of other sports, there's a lot of benefits to that. New Edgewood AD Saltzberry talks to the student paper about student-athlete experience priorities for early in her tenure, including a center for student-athlete well-being, including “sports psychology, mental health, sports medicine, strength, and conditioning, as well as nutrition,” and developing the recently-purchased Fitchburg property for Athletics and Wellness. Dubuque adds Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey beginning in 2023-24. Spartans VP/AD Edmonds: “Through a series of conversations with the Finlandia athletic administration, as well as in partnership with our campus and community partners, we were able to provide the support needed to their student-athletes and their hockey program. We are excited to combine the history of Finlandia University hockey, the passion for hockey in the Dubuque community, and the re-imagining of adding a competitive NCAA program. Connect/MB Sports’ Banker talks with mental skills advisor Santore, commonly known as Coach Dar, about mental fitness and the “crisis of comfort” among college student-athletes. Santore goes deep, including on how coaches can develop student-athletes’ resiliency, the impact of social media, the importance of coping skills and lots more. Santore on the growth of on-demand student-athlete help & a plethora of tech solutions: “...if we do not allow them to learn certain life skills along the way, then how have we really served the student-athlete not just for sport, but for life. We haven’t. So, we want them to be able to have the ability and the responsibility to be able to handle things and learn aspects of life, learn how to cope with it. Extra Points purveyor Brown outlines what’s ahead for EP as the publication celebrates its third birthday. First, Brown notes there will be a focus on expanding D1.classroom, a sports management curriculum-support product designed to help overworked instructors. As a supplement to that product, EP is hard at work turning the AD Simulator 3000 “into an actual, Honest-To-God Computer Game that we plan to roll out to our D1.classroom partners first. McKinsey & Company conducted a survey of roughly 1,700 women working in the business of sports and found the industry “trails all other industries on every dimension of inclusion,” which is particularly important because “women reported being 2.8 times more likely to leave their job when they do not feel included.” Specifically, the survey found that while about 80% of women reported “some positive experiences as individuals, they are much less likely to say their organization overall is fair.” Overall, ~40% of the women surveyed agreed that their organizations are fair, with all employees receiving equitable treatment and equal chances to succeed. Additionally, women in sports administration are less likely than peers in other industries to have sponsors who can help steer their careers and advocate for them within their organizations, and while women in the sports industry are more likely than their peers in other sectors to feel they have the right skills to progress, most feel they need to leave their organizations to realize their goals.
