William Penn AD Aleesha Rabedeaux joins the Building a Champion podcast to discuss her goals, recruiting and more. One of Rabedeaux’s goals is to elevate all athletic programs academically and “right now we’re figuring out what each program needs to bring that to life.” As the Statesmen continue to be involved in the community, the athletic department and local high school held a joint pep rally downtown to kickoff the fall sports season, which Rabedeaux says received rave reviews from student-athletes and will be something WP continues to do into the future. Asked about being competitive in recruiting: “We really want to give our coaches that flexibility to get out of Iowa as needed. One of the things that we have is recruiting dollars so that coaches can request to go to those tournaments, showcases, get out on the road and I think that's really important for us is making sure that we get out on the road. That personal connection is so important and so giving our coaches that flexibility to be able to go do that is really really important. Also our relationship with our admissions department is huge. We need them to bring in our student-athletes and to have those great visits so that we can be such a positive place for students to come and visit and want to come here to attend school.” More. Legislative Matters:

+ The U.S. House of Representatives will fast-track the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, according to Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich, who notes the bill is one of 12 that will be fast-tracked to the House floor for a vote. “The package states that almost nothing can get in the way of a vote for these 12 bills, save a couple of provisions including one hour of debate.” Congressman Greg Steube (R-FL): “The radical left is not in step with the American people on the issue of protecting women’s sports.” The bill would add language to Title IX to make it a violation for a school to “permit a person whose sex is male to participate in an athletic program or activity that is designated for women.” The definition of “sex” would be solely defined as “a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.” The bill would apply to all educational institutions receiving federal funding, including colleges and universities. + President Joe Biden has signed an anti-hazing bill for higher ed institutions with federal student aid. The Washington Post’s Nichole Asbury: “The Stop Campus Hazing Act, which passed in the U.S. Senate earlier this month, mandates institutions publicly share hazing statistics, including the name of the organization involved and details of the behavior that incited a hazing violation. It also provides an explicit definition of the term and requires institutions to implement education and prevention programs on campus.” (link)

The Observer-Reporter’s John Sacco chats with local ADs and high school student-athletes about the changes stemming from the House settlement and the impact it will have beyond DI. California (PA - NCAA DII) AD Karen Hjerpe: “I believe we’re starting to see individuals who have been impacted by this already in the transfer portal. Division II and III students-athletes could be looking for a place to call home. I think the (roster reductions) could create more challenges for high school athletes as they move forward. Some of the implications might lead to a Division IV expansion of club sports. We’ve been seeing how athletics are used to build the student numbers in building a university or college. It’s been a strategy that will likely continue. I think the impact will happen pretty quick once the agreement is approved.” Waynesburg (NCAA DIII) AD Tim Fusina: “Division III schools should have some opportunities to gain student-athletes through the changes. It’s going to create a 24-7 recruiting process for all sports with dealing with transfer portal, recruiting high school athletes and keeping tabs on some recruits who got away initially but might turn to your program if things don’t work out.” More. Companies that sell tickets for live sports and concerts must follow a new universal pricing standard that requires them to disclose all cleaning fees, concert service fees or other mandatory fees in initial search results when booking. The new Federal Trade Commission rule takes effect in April and states the total price must be the most prominent price in an ad. Companies can still provide itemizations and breakdowns but cannot hide the real total. (link)
