Dordt AD Darin Keizer chats with Sioux County Radio’s The Daily Grind to update on projects for the Defenders, starting with the ongoing building campaign to renovate locker rooms, training room and offices this summer. Keizer hopes to raise the funds to upgrade De Witt Gymnasium in the next couple years to expand locker rooms, update HVAC and more. “Down the road, we’ve talked about joint partnership and a desire to continue to add on and make the gameday experience better for our football program. We didn’t have a seat left at any of our games. It was standing room only and so we understand that there is a need to potentially add some seating down the road.” On the trio of joint-use facilities, Keizer says he was hesitant at first, given the complexity of sharing three different facilities with three different entities, but credits the leadership and collaboration of all involved. “I’ve talked to other high school and college ADs and they’re like, ‘This would never work in our area. There’s no possible way we could do this.’ […] It takes a village to do it and do it well and I think we have the right people at the table to be able to do it, but it is complex.” (link)

Notable: The NCAA is considering allowing five years of eligibility for players in all sports moving forward, according to CBS’ Jon Rothstein, who notes there is “no timetable on when a decision will be made, but the topic will continue to be discussed in the early part of 2025. (link)

The Chronicle of Higher Education’s Lee Gardner examines how the Trump administration could impact higher ed’s finances and notes the “most obvious possibilities include fallout from looming tax reform, adjustments to the Pell Grant, and changes big or small to the Education Department, including its possible demolition.” Gardner points out that reform appears inevitable. “Many of the tax cuts enacted by President Trump in 2018 during his first term will expire in 2025, and he will no doubt want them extended.” NACUBO VP for Policy and Research Liz Clark: “That’s going to come with a cost. We fully expect that lawmakers are going to be looking for offsets to help pay for those tax cuts. So it is possible that they may look to some of the existing tax provisions that impact college students and colleges and universities as well.” Meanwhile, Pell grants could either be in danger or be expanded, as Gardner notes: “On the one hand, the president-elect has asked billionaire businessmen Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to head a new federal Department of Government Efficiency to slash government spending, and Pell Grants may be on the chopping block. In an editorial in The Wall Street Journal last month, Musk and Ramaswamy wrote that they planned to cut costs in part by targeting the more than $500B in federal expenditures that are not currently ‘authorized’ by legislation but are funded year to year by congressional budget resolutions.” As far as the possible elimination of the Education Department, Appalachian State (NCAA DI) professor Andrew Koricich points out it cannot be done unilaterally by the executive branch. “You still need congressional approval to eliminate a cabinet agency, and I don’t think we can just assume that, on the very narrow majorities in both chambers, there are just people who are going to sign up to eliminate that department.” Lots more. Lawmakers in Indiana have filed a bill to ban transgender women’s participation in college sports. House Bill 1041, authored by Representative Michelle Davis (R-Whiteland), contains virtually identical language to the bill that Gov. Eric Holcomb vetoed three legislative sessions ago. Holcomb’s veto was overridden by the Legislature’s GOP supermajority. The bill would apply to both state and private colleges, as well as associations that put on intercollegiate sporting events. It would also require out-of-state teams who allow transgender women to play on their teams to notify the teams they plan to play against in Indiana at least 60 days in advance. The bill also permits students to file a lawsuit against their school if they feel they were "deprived of an athletic opportunity" or "directly or indirectly injured" as a result of a violation of the policy. Indiana’s legislative session began January 9. (link)
