The merger between Findlay and Bluffton has been delayed, after initial plans to be merged by this fall will now take two or three years due to an extended approval process and regulatory changes. The merger process includes two phases: Findlay taking over Bluffton’s assets and the integration of academic programs for both schools. The Courier’s Elizabeth Clauss: “Currently, the process is stalled in Phase 1. The next step in the merger hinges on approval from crediting bodies, including the higher learning commission, the Ohio Department of Higher Education and the federal government.” (link)

The Power 4 leagues are working on a proposal that grants them the rights to manage postseason championships, such as the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, assuming control over events that have long been operated by the NCAA, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who explains the document “indicates a clear direction from the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC. They want an expansion of their previously existing autonomous legislative powers, not only for rulemaking and policy decision-making but for NCAA championships as well, controlling concepts like tournament format, revenue distribution and selection committee process. The proposal would create a new subdivision within the NCAA umbrella – an expected concept and one included in NCAA president Charlie Baker’s Project DI plan.” Each P4 commissioner has confirmed the existence of the “working document,” but SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey cautions the proposal is only a conversation starter. “There have been seven to eight months of discussions about the NCAA governance decision-making process. We have a responsibility to develop an idea. We’ve circulated this with our conferences. We’ve let the NCAA president know. This is an important time for change. We think it is important to provoke thought.” Both Sankey and Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark insist they have no desire to, as Yormark puts it, “compromise what makes college athletics so special,” but Dellenger notes there is already some concern. One FCS leader tells Dellenger: “This could be a real fight over the future of what college athletics looks like. At some point, we’re going to have to call their bluff and say, ‘Take your ball and go.’ It seems to me that we are increasingly closer to that happening.” (link)

+ The NCPA, which spearheaded the effort to unionize athletes in the ongoing USC (DI) case, has submitted a motion to withdraw its charge against the NCAA and USC, per ESPN’s Dan Murphy, who notes Dartmouth (DI) basketball players recently withdrew the only other active NLRB case for unionization. + NCPA Executive Director Ramogi Huma explains the group decided to pull its petition because of recent progress made in the effort to compensate college athletes. He also noted that five states, including California, now have statutes that allow schools to directly pay their athletes NIL money while prohibiting the NCAA or conferences from punishing them. “Together, these state laws and the change in respondents’ position on compensating its college athletes serve as powerful catalysts toward USC (and other universities) paying their football and basketball players fair compensation.” Sportico’s Daniel Libit adds: “Left unsaid in the motion for withdrawal was the consequence of the 2024 presidential election—the agency will likely take a much less favorable attitude towards college athlete employment under incoming president Donald Trump.” Libit also notes that an NCAA spokesperson says in a statement that "student-athlete leaders" from DI to DIII are opposed to college athletes gaining employee status and that the legality of the issue "can only be addressed by Congress." + U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) tells ESPN’s Dan Murphy he’s not interested in saving the NCAA but would rather give the association the legal runway it needs to save itself. “College sports is in crisis right now. If Congress doesn't act, we risk seeing devastation." Meanwhile, Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) tells Murphy he’s working on a bipartisan effort with Cruz and Senators Jerry Moran (R-KS) and Cory Booker (D-NJ) and is close to finalizing a “very strong discussion draft” of a new bill. He adds: “The political stars seem to be aligning.” As part of the compromise, Blumenthal indicates the lawmakers are discussing a special carve-out for student-athletes that would allow them to collectively bargain without becoming employees. "That might be an option. Enabling collective bargaining without employment status certainly has to be taken seriously. We're talking about a variety of different possibilities." More from Murphy. Private-college presidents and chancellors are preparing for a year of conflict in 2025, as The Chronicle of Higher Education’s Eric Kelderman explains: “Many of the presidents feel their sector is deeply misunderstood and under pressure from constituents across the political spectrum whose demands are conflicting or impossible to satisfy, such as cracking down on protests while allowing free speech or attracting new students at the same time as cutting programs and faculty.” DePauw (DIII) President Lori White: “We’re all trying to figure out how we can speak to one another in ways that kind of lower the volume and try to find some common ground so that we can move forward.” There are also concerns about ongoing efforts to ban DEI and crack down on transgender athletes’ participation from the incoming Trump administration. National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities President Barbara Mistick: “It is going to be this whole miasma of things that just keep popping up and you’re going to see them. It’s going to be what happens in the newspaper; something happens in an institution and it becomes front page news. Next thing you know, we’re going to see it on the House floor.” Mistick, however, believes Secretary of Education nominee Linda McMahon will be a good manager for the department. “We will be fortunate to have her. She had great experience at the [Small Business Administration] in the last [Trump] administration. She understands how to run a big organization.” (link)
