Kentucky Wesleyan AD Mark Shook will depart at the end of the academic year for the same role at Hanover (DIII). Lenoir-Rhyne held an introductory presser for new AD Daron Montgomery today. President Fred Whitt on the interest in the Bears' AD opening: “I wish we had more of an open records law and you could see all the candidates who applied for the position. Over ten sitting ADs, very successful places. In fact, our three finalists were all sitting athletic directors at some very impressive universities who all wanted to be here at Lenoir-Rhyne, but we hit a home run.” Montgomery: “For many college administrators, it’s a dream to think about coming back and leading and serving your alma mater. When the LR AD search got underway, that dream began for me and it became a possibility. […] We have one of the premier Division II NCAA athletic programs in this country without a doubt. We’re going to work hard every day. We’re going to bring a positive attitude. We’re going to do the little things well. The Minnesota Star Tribune’s Patrick Reusse asks what many have “Will Divisions II and III follow and also grant the extra eligibility for JUCO athletes? And, since the waiver announcement stated ‘non-NCAA school,’ does this mean athletes competing at NAIA schools would be eligible for extra eligibility as transfers to four-year NCAA schools?” NSIC Commissioner Erin Lind, who sits on the DII Management Council, hopes more clarity will come following next week’s NCAA Convention in Nashville. Jamestown AD Austin Hieb says the Jimmies are checking about how the waiver applies to them moving as they move from NAIA to DII. (link)

The Observer-Reporter’s John Sacco chats with local ADs and high school student-athletes about the changes stemming from the House settlement and the impact it will have beyond DI. California (PA) AD Karen Hjerpe: “I believe we’re starting to see individuals who have been impacted by this already in the transfer portal. Division II and III students-athletes could be looking for a place to call home. I think the (roster reductions) could create more challenges for high school athletes as they move forward. Some of the implications might lead to a Division IV expansion of club sports. We’ve been seeing how athletics are used to build the student numbers in building a university or college. It’s been a strategy that will likely continue. I think the impact will happen pretty quick once the agreement is approved.” Waynesburg (DIII) AD Tim Fusina: “Division III schools should have some opportunities to gain student-athletes through the changes. It’s going to create a 24-7 recruiting process for all sports with dealing with transfer portal, recruiting high school athletes and keeping tabs on some recruits who got away initially but might turn to your program if things don’t work out.” More. The U.S. House of Representatives will fast-track the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, according to Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich, who notes the bill is one of 12 that will be fast-tracked to the House floor for a vote. “The package states that almost nothing can get in the way of a vote for these 12 bills, save a couple of provisions including one hour of debate.” Congressman Greg Steube (R-FL): “The radical left is not in step with the American people on the issue of protecting women’s sports.” The bill would add language to Title IX to make it a violation for a school to “permit a person whose sex is male to participate in an athletic program or activity that is designated for women.” The definition of “sex” would be solely defined as “a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.” The bill would apply to all educational institutions receiving federal funding, including colleges and universities. + Here’s an eye-opener: As of yesterday, there were 5,795 players in the football transfer portal, including 1,865 from DII schools. According to SportSource Analytics, 238 players have entered in the last seven days and 627 have entered in the past 14 days. (link)

+ The finalists for the DII Award of Excellence include 22 schools and four conferences. The top three finalists will be announced at next week’s NCAA Convention in Nashville. (link)

+ The SAC partnered with SkyCoach to use a three camera angle setup for this fall’s soccer and volleyball championships. Commissioner Patrick Britz: “The goal with this was to really just enhance our championship experience for the teams participating. We’re not trying to delay or take over the game with constant video reviews but just having it available in case you need it. […] It’s a step in the right direction. A record 1,991 CEOs in the U.S. left their jobs in 2024, according to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, who began tracking such data in 2002. The figure surpasses last year’s previous record and represents a 60% increase over two years ago. Sherwood’s Claire Yubin Oh with more context: “It might not just be short-term stock envy that’s driving CEOs away; there may also be a pandemic hangover at play. Indeed, departures have been consistent except for a small dip during the Covid years, presumably because it didn’t seem prudent to change leadership during such a tumultuous time. Last year’s churn could also reflect a growing risk appetite for ‘leaders who can navigate increasing complexity’ across corporate America, said consulting firm Russell Reynolds. … Or, it may reflect another simple fact: CEOs have been getting older, with the average age of an S&P 1500 CEO rising from ~54 to ~59 in the last 15 years, per Business Insider. Maybe they’ve decided they’ve got enough in the bank and want to retire, or maybe they were replaced by an AI chatbot, which one China-based company claimed to do back in 2023.” (link)
