The Power 4 leagues are working on a proposal that grants them the rights to manage postseason championships, such as the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, assuming control over events that have long been operated by the NCAA, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who explains the document “indicates a clear direction from the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC. They want an expansion of their previously existing autonomous legislative powers, not only for rulemaking and policy decision-making but for NCAA championships as well, controlling concepts like tournament format, revenue distribution and selection committee process. The proposal would create a new subdivision within the NCAA umbrella – an expected concept and one included in NCAA president Charlie Baker’s Project DI plan.” Each P4 commissioner has confirmed the existence of the “working document,” but SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey cautions the proposal is only a conversation starter. “There have been seven to eight months of discussions about the NCAA governance decision-making process. We have a responsibility to develop an idea. We’ve circulated this with our conferences. We’ve let the NCAA president know. This is an important time for change. We think it is important to provoke thought.” Both Sankey and Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark insist they have no desire to, as Yormark puts it, “compromise what makes college athletics so special,” but Dellenger notes there is already some concern. One FCS leader tells Dellenger: “This could be a real fight over the future of what college athletics looks like. At some point, we’re going to have to call their bluff and say, ‘Take your ball and go.’ It seems to me that we are increasingly closer to that happening.” (link)

Utah AD Mark Harlan talks with Deseret News’ Joe Coles in the first of a two-part interview about several topics, including his comments about the officiating crew following the football game against BYU. “I think as we talk about last season, just like Kyle [Whittingham] would say, there’s things that they need to improve on as we head into the next year, I would say the same of myself. I think that night, obviously, I reacted emotionally and my frustrations were expressed in a way that was not worthy of a true leader of a program of this stature. And certainly as any leader should, you learn and grow from those experiences.” Harlan goes on to note that retaining football players starts during the season because “until tampering rules are enforced by the NCAA, which they’re not, you’ve got to be the ones in the ears of your students early.” The Utes will go “all in” on revenue-sharing and Harlan says when it comes to generating additional revenue: “I think we really need to lean in on licensing. We need to improve our outreach in that regard. And other opportunities that we just didn’t think of. The NCAA is looking at loosening rules on a lot of different activities that you can do in the revenue space. And when those things happen, we want to be on the forefront of being able to do that.” More. (link)

Michigan State’s plans for a new arena that would be home to its volleyball, wrestling and gymnastics programs are “moving fast,” according to Spartans AD Alan Haller. “We've already had authorization to plan from the board. Hopefully at some point in the near future, we'll get authorization to proceed. We're working on a financial funding plan that's going to be separate than the stadium projects, and that's coming along really well. So this arena is going to happen.” In addition to hosting MSU sporting events, Haller says the “bigger vision is to have community events there as well. It allows potentially high school athletic events, commencements, small concerts. I just think it'll be an arena that'll be operating throughout the year.” The arena has yet to be named, and Haller notes that “if there's somebody out there that's listening that wants to put a dollar figure, that name could be theirs. … Sponsorship naming will be something that comes to our campus. And our community is going to have to wrap their arms around it, because it's a source of revenue.” Does that include Spartan Stadium? Haller says he’s “open to a lot of possibilities.” (link)

Penn State Football HC James Franklin believes an expanded College Football Playoff requires more uniformity throughout the sport, including every team’s inclusion in a conference, saying ahead of the upcoming CFP semifinal against Notre Dame: "It should be consistent across college football. This is no knock at [Fighting Irish HC Marcus Freeman] or Notre Dame, but I think everybody should be in a conference. I think everybody should play a conference championship game, or nobody should play a conference championship game. I think everybody should play the same number of conference games." Franklin also highlighted other areas where the sport could be more uniform, including starting the season a week earlier to ease the strain of playing more games with an expanded CFP. Further, Franklin reiterated his call for a college football commissioner, again nominating former Alabama HC Nick Saban, former Washington/Boise State HC Chris Petersen and former Wake Forest HC Dave Clawson as candidates. “We need somebody that is looking at it from a big-picture perspective.” Freeman, meanwhile, noted he doesn’t have a strong opinion on whether the sport needs more uniformity. "I'm a guy that just [thinks], 'Tell us what we're doing and let's go, and you move forward.’ I love where we're at right now. [Fighting Irish AD] Pete Bevacqua and our Notre Dame administration will continue to make decisions that are best for our program.” (link)

The AAC announces plans to honor former USF Men’s Basketball HC Amir Abdur-Rahim, who passed away in October. Abdur-Rahim has been named the Honorary 2024-25 ACC Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year, and his family will join Commissioner Tim Pernetti at the Bulls’ February 6 home game against Temple for the presentation of the award. The AAC will also donate $15K – the amount of Abdur-Rahim’s contracted bonus for winning the Coach of the Year honor – to the Future Foundation, a nonprofit organization that was close to Abdur-Rahim and his family’s hearts. Additionally, the AAC will honor Abdur-Rahim by permanently naming another postseason men's basketball honor in his name. The Amir Abdur-Rahim Sportsmanship Award will be presented annually to the men’s basketball student-athlete who, as determined by the league's head coaches, best exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship, fair play and leadership. The Texas beach volleyball program is the first to join with NIL company Franchise Mode, which allows fans to donate directly to entire athletic teams. Franchise Mode will go live the week of January 20, and is an extension of Booster’s business model, according to SBJ’s Irving Mejia-Hilario, who notes the student-athletes will pocket 80% of the money while Booster takes a 20% cut. Fans can donate to individual athletes through plans starting at $5 per month or entire teams for as low as $25 a month. Co-Founder/COO Ryan Simkin: “I don't think we're pivoting from individual athletes to teams, but I think we can grow exponentially faster through teams. Connectivity through social media is at an all-time high and we need to be the rising tide that lifts all boats.” (link)

SBJ’s Ethan Joyce catches up with several sports industry tech experts to get their predictions for 2025, and Pixellot President for North America David Shapiro predicts 2025 “will be the year of personalized data and highlights across every level of sports. Imagine NBA.com-level content being accessible to small colleges, high schools and youth sports. Emerging AI tools, such as automated commentaries and other augmentation services, will transform short-form video content, making it more engaging and viral than ever.” WMT Founder/CEO Andres Focil believes that “we will see the accelerated professionalization of college sports converge with a profound digital transformation driven by AI, data analytics and fan-driven digital experiences through storytelling. Premier organizations in both the professional and collegiate markets will drive deeper fan affinity through personalization and teams will leverage a combination of next-generation digital experiences and artificial intelligence to curate the entire fan journey from pre-game content to in-game statistics to post-game content. With an unprecedented volume of real-time fan data now at their fingertips, forward-thinking organizations will understand their fans in new and unique ways and deploy advanced analytics to yield actionable insights to realize deeper fan engagement and loyalty.” (link)

The NBA is launching a league-wide biomechanics program through which motion capture labs will be installed at the training facilities of all 30 teams within a year. The program will start with the Utah Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers, Indiana Pacers and Phoenix Suns, and NBA EVP for Operations & Administration David Weiss tells SBJ’s Joe Lemire: “It's one of several major initiatives that we have in the works, including with the Players Association, to try to reduce injuries in the league. We're not aware of anything quite like this league-wide in the world.” P3, a private facility that independently has evaluated the biomechanics of roughly 70% of current NBA players, will work with the league as a consultant to the program, and the four companies that won the league’s RFP were Qualisys, Theia Markerless, Bertec and BreakAway Data. BreakAway CEO Dave Anderson, a former NFL WR, tells Lemire: [The NBA and NBAPA] are really trying to use science and numbers and research to make sure that the players are playing at the highest level. And I really appreciate that because a lot of these leagues are just adding games, changing roster sizes, and changing rules, and they just assume the players will figure it out. The NBA is taking this player-first initiative.” (link)

Axios’ Dan Primack sits down with Arctos Partners Co-Founder/Managing Partner Ian Charles and asks what role he expects private equity to play in college sports. Charles: "I hope the answer is zero. The collegiate landscape is very unstable and unpredictable, which is stating the obvious. And anyone who tells you they know how it's going to play out is not being authentic or they're delusional. The idea that putting a piece of structured paper or pref paper or loan structure on top of a nonprofit institution that doesn't have institutional-grade business leadership…the idea that's a stabilizing thing or a healthy thing I find very hard to believe." Charles confirms Arctos, which has stakes in the likes of the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, NBA’s Golden State Warriors & MLB’s Boston Red Sox, has received inbound interest from college programs and explains: “What we've said to everyone is unless we can figure out a way together to bring stability to the situation we're not comfortable. There will be a couple of deals that get cut in college athletics, and it may break an institution that matters to a community in this country, which isn't a good look for private equity. Their pitch is we will help you grow your revenue, but that's a very low-credibility pitch. Most of the revenue streams at these universities are locked for long horizons. The media contracts are done at the league level. No sponsor is going to help you on ticketing. No sponsor is going to materially help you on sponsorship. Those are the big levers of value creation." Still more from Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger on the realities of the House settlement’s implementation, as he notes the “structure is ripe for legal action – even the two leading plaintiff attorneys who struck the House settlement have publicly expressed doubt in its legality.” SANIL Co-Founder Jason Belzer: “I don’t think the clearinghouse is going to be able to last very long. It’s just the reality. There are a lot of ways around the clearinghouse. Who is to say what fair market value is? They are crazy to think that guys are going to sit around while a third party is going to judge whether these deals are real.” Dellenger reminds the House plaintiffs’ attorney Jeffrey Kessler last month remarked: “If the NCAA (and power conferences) tries to punish a student or school, if they try to take action against an NIL (collective), I think they’ll probably see that NIL organization in court.” In fact, Brian Davis, an attorney in California who represents more than 100 football players in the NIL space, plans to file a legal objection to the settlement over the issue. “I don’t think there is any world where you can require a submission of an NIL contract to some third-party clearinghouse to determine fair market. I don’t see that ever surviving a challenge in the courts without collective bargaining.” Aside from the potential for more legal battles, Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua points out the enforcement issue remains. “It’s going to come down to enforcement. You get dinged, so what happens? Are there any repercussions?” (link)

High Point is making club sports an extension of the athletic department. Panthers AD Dan Hauser: "High Point University has an extensive history of maximizing opportunity through creative strategic initiatives, and we are very excited to announce the Intercollegiate Club Sports Plan. The NCAA collegiate sports landscape has changed tremendously with the transfer portal, NIL, and the House Settlement resulting in decreased athletic opportunities for high school graduates. The HPU Intercollegiate Club Sports Plan will create the ability to fill this competitive sports participation need at an elite experience level. We look forward to our new ICS Athletic Director Stephen Denny's leadership as we transform and grow the program for the future." HCU ICS will feature over 30 teams and 850 athletes, with the long-term plan to add more offerings, though scholarships will not be available at the inception. (link)

With two consecutive seasons without a representative in the College Football Playoff championship, Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger wonders whether the Deep South’s stranglehold on the sport is coming to an end, and former Bowling Green/Utah/Florida/Ohio State Football HC Urban Meyer remarks: “The question is, is the SEC’s dominance over? It is. It’s over. Now, next year’s another year. But for (these) two years, it’s over.” Meanwhile, political commentator/former Bill Clinton campaign strategist James Carville, a diehard LSU fan, says: “I don’t see this as any reshuffling. They’re not going to stop playing football down here. I’m not too worried about it. SEC football is going to be fine. I’d be surprised if they don’t win six of the next 10.” Like others, Dellenger observes that NIL and the transfer portal have made it easier to get players out of the region and distribute them more equally across the country, but former LSU/Vanderbilt/Indiana HC Gerry DiNardo sees it differently: “I think it’s a competition of the two conferences rather than a resurgence of one or the other. I think they’re both very similar other than their culture differences because of where they are located. Can you say one conference is stronger than the other? I don’t think so. … We all have four blue bloods playing this week. Tell me what’s changed? I see no shift. It’s a haves and have-nots business and it’s never going to change. You’re never supposed to say never but I’m saying it now.” (link)

Former Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor’s lawsuit seeking lost NIL opportunities is barred by statutes of limitation and is incompatible with IP law, according to the NCAA, which argues Pryor’s claims are also preempted by his membership in resolved class action lawsuits led by Ed O’Bannon, Sam Keller and Shawne Alston. Sportico’s Michael McCann explains further: “The NCAA points out that federal antitrust claims have a four-year statute of limitations, which for a lawsuit filed in 2024 would cover claims going back to 2020. Pryor played at Ohio State from 2008 to 2010, obviously long before 2020. The NCAA also notes that his unjust enrichment claim has a maximum statute of limitations of six years, which is useful for claims arising from activities as far back as 2018 but not 2010. Pryor’s case, the NCAA insists, is ‘more than a decade too late.’ The NCAA also accuses Pryor of building a case based on ‘nonexistent rights,’” citing Marshall v. ESPN in which the Sixth Circuit reasoned that college players lack a right in the broadcasts or rebroadcasts of games. “While Pryor maintains the NCAA owes him money for the use of publicity rights in game footage, the NCAA maintains that argument fails per Marshall and other precedent.” More from McCann. Pepperdine has postponed tomorrow’s women’s hoops matchup with Portland as the Palisades Fire continues to spread in the area. The schools are working with the WCC on rescheduling the contest. (link); In the latest update from Pepperdine, school officials say the Palisades Fire is now approximately three miles east of the Malibu campus and approaching the area burned in the Franklin Fire, which is 2.4 miles from campus. “As the fire moves westward and approaches the burned area from the Franklin Fire, fuel for the fire will significantly decrease. The Palisades fire has burned more than 11,800 acres but continues to pose no immediate threat to the Malibu campus. The University is also monitoring multiple other fires around the Los Angeles area, which continue to grow but are not a threat to campus. (link); Meanwhile, evacuation warnings have been issued for Pasadena, and the Eaton Fire is currently about four miles away from the Rose Bowl. Our thoughts are with all those impacted. (link)

VCU’s men’s basketball game against Fordham tonight will be played without fans due to an ongoing water crisis in Richmond, where malfunctions in the city’s reservoir system have prompted a boil water advisory – if people have water at all. Rams AD Ed McLaughlin: “We wanted to wait as long as possible but water service has not returned to the Siegel Center, despite assurances throughout the last two days that it would. We hoped to serve the role of a place for our fans to gather and enjoy a few hours of happiness during a time when so many people in our community have suffered grave challenges. Shutting our doors to fans has major financial implications for our department and major impact on the student-athlete experience. We did not make this decision lightly and gave it as much time as humanly possible. As a city resident still without water, I know what the length of this outage has done to many homes in our community. We look forward to having fans back in the Siegel Center next Tuesday night, Jan. 14, when we host Saint Louis University.” (link)

Tulane announces the launch of Ascend TUgether, a Green Wave Club fundraising campaign with an immediate goal of raising $4M in unrestricted giving and increasing Green Wave Club membership to 3,500 donors by May 2025. Green Wave Club members contributed a record $3.6M in FY24. Green Wave AD David Harris: "As those who follow college athletics know, this is a time of enormous change in our industry. Throughout that change and whatever evolution is to come, the foundation of our department is built on gifts to the Green Wave Club. There are numerous ways to support Tulane Athletics, but this is clear: In order to achieve the lofty goals we have for Tulane Athletics, we must grow Green Wave Club donor support. … As a department, we have taken on significant new expenses and are prepared to meet the needs of the moment in a meaningful way. We recognize the future college athletics landscape will only increase the pressure for expanded resources and the work to grow department revenues is never-ending.” (link)

The Connecticut-focused Bleeding Blue for Good collective is no longer accepting donations and has made plans to shut down. Executive Director Jared Guy Thomas explained in a New Year’s Eve post that “we will enter a wind down phase that we expect to take us through the end of June as we meet all of our commitments. At that point, we expect revenue-sharing to begin. Money already collected will continue to be used to partner UConn student-athletes with deserving Connecticut charities.” Net revenue for the collective in 2022 and 2023 was $1.73M, and Thomas declined to give a specific revenue figure for 2024 other than to say it was “significantly more.” (link)

According to D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers, the CAA is “considering going back to a COVID-era conference scheduling practice where teams in the league essentially only play teams in their specific regions. Would be a crippling move for a league with RPIs of 7 and 10 the last two seasons. Obviously, several coaches are irate at the possibility of going to this scheduling model. It would, for instance, really harm teams like Northeastern who are in a CAA region with lesser RPI teams, etc.” (link)
