America East Commissioner Brad Walker has agreed to an extension through June 30, 2028. UMBC President/America East Board of Presidents Chair Valerie Sheares Ashby: “Brad’s role in bolstering America East membership and the conference adopting a bold new brand identity are just small samples of his successes over the last four-plus years. His fierce support of our student-athletes and thoughtful collaboration with all America East universities have positioned the conference and its member institutions well to successfully navigate uncertain times within college athletics going forward.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake shares some updates on the Pac-12’s expansion plans, reporting that the league “kicked the tires on Tulane and Memphis last September. I’m told the conference never made a formal offer to the schools but tried to open discussions and presented some terms that were supposed to serve as a starting point. The American Athletic Conference members then surprised the Pac-12 by publicly announcing they were staying put. I’m not convinced the door is shut. Stay tuned, especially if the media partners value inventory in a new time zone.” That said, Canzano isn’t convinced the league “wants to look eastward” for new members. “The new-world conference has a tight geographic base right now and several of the athletic directors have described the mission of the future Pac-12 to be viewed as ‘the best in the West.’ That thought always brings me back to UNLV. The Rebels signed a Memorandum of Understanding to remain in the Mountain West in September. There were significant financial promises made by the MW to UNLV. However, the terms of that deal and uncertainty after lawsuits between the Pac-12 and MW may leave some wiggle room. … As one media-world source told me this week: ‘I still think [the Mountain West] have some exposure with UNLV going to the Pac-12.’” Canzano on Northern Illinois’ new MW membership: “It doesn’t add media value and increases travel costs for MW schools. Said one industry source: ‘They’re becoming more geographically dispersed and not any stronger as a conference. I can’t understand how this benefits them.’” (link)

Houston AD Eddie Nuñez says the Cougars’ rev-share number to start will be around $18M and notes the Cougars created dozens of different models to structure a plan. Nuñez says a major challenge during the process was the data used to determine the value for every sport – TV contract and ticket sales, among other things – was based on UH’s membership in the AAC and limited information from less than two years in the Big 12. UH officials also looked around the Big 12, other Texas-based schools and conferences nationally, on how much they were revenue-sharing and percentages allocated for specific sports. Initial models, Nuñez explains, ranged from $6-8M to the full $20.5M. As for how the money will be distributed, Nuñez says: “We’re still assessing a couple pieces of the puzzle. It won’t be a perfect science. We’re going to have a set number, like an official set number that this is it, closer to the House settlement. … “Everybody will get something. What that number may be, I don’t know yet. We’re looking at trying to get every one of our scholarship student-athletes something.” Nuñez adds: “At the same time the biggest hurdle that we’ve got to overcome is we are in the process of developing a sustainable athletic department. That’s what I came here to do, with the understanding it’s going to take a pretty good lift. And at the same time revenue share was coming around the corner. Now that’s part of the equation.” (link)

In the second of a two-part conversation with Deseret News’ Joe Coles, Utah AD Mark Harlan says of the men’s hoops NIL situation: “I felt like as I’ve done my data research and shared with colleagues…I feel like our NIL for basketball is very healthy. It was a dramatic increase this year. That’s why we saw talented student-athletes come to the University of Utah along with their desire to play here. So I’m pleased, but we know there’s never enough. But you also have to be able to say, ‘OK, this is enough to field a very competitive roster,’ and I think that’s exactly what we have in our men’s basketball program.” Harlan also comments on the Utes’ Big 12 membership so far: “We didn’t win every game we wanted, but our overall assimilation into this league has been great. To be associated with these new universities has been really fun for all of us. And to get to know new faces, new places. Talking to folks that were at the Iowa State trip for women’s basketball the other day, I mean the environment there, they came back and just said it was amazing. I mean, that’s really a tribute to Iowa State. But also we see that a lot as we’ve gone on the road so far. So we’re excited about what the future is in the Big 12.” On improving attendance at the Huntsman Center: “Winning helps. Winning helps. I’m not trying to put pressure on the basketball program, but people want to see winning basketball. And that’s why we’re leaning in to support the student-athletes and to support the coaching staff to make sure they’re at the very best possible place.” Full Q&A. (link)

Mississippi State and Learfield are set to announce a multiyear renewal of their partnership, according to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, who notes: “Learfield, which has worked with MSU for 16 years, will be the exclusive rights holder managing multimedia and sponsorships for the school. The deal also includes a renewal with SIDEARM Sports – the provider for MSU's website, mobile app and streaming platform. The partnership, too, will allow MSU Bulldog Sports Properties…to explore assets such as on-field and on-court logos at Davis Wade Stadium and Humphrey Coliseum.” (link)

The Big Ten could be positioned for a successful football run, according to The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman, who observes the league’s media rights deal, the richest in history, “will enable the Big Ten to compete more vigorously for out-of-market athletes, who traditionally have stayed near their homes in football-rich states of Texas and Florida. Recent expansion to California, Oregon and Washington has provided Big Ten programs in the Eastern and Central time zones with fertile recruiting areas. Oregon HC Dan Lanning: “The thing you’d say about this conference is that it does have a great variety of what success looks like. You can win in a lot of different ways in this conference. There’s some teams that are ground-and-pound teams in this conference. There’s teams that throw the ball. There’s a lot of different defensive schemes. So, I think the variety more than anything sticks out that you have to be able to prepare for different situations, different moments throughout the season when you play the teams in this conference.” Meanwhile, Michigan Heisman winner/ESPN analyst Desmond Howard points to the Wolverines’ win over Alabama and Illinois’ victory over South Carolina in this year’s bowl games. “It goes a long way, in my opinion, in debunking a lot of this noise that these SEC schools deserve to be in the CFP, because of whatever rationale these people try to come up with. But it always boils down to because they’re in the SEC.” (link)

Next week’s meeting of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority Board will include discussion about “the convention authority’s agreement with College Football Playoff officials authorizing the tourism agency to spend up to $40M and approving Steve Hill, president and CEO of the LVCVA, to execute all agreements and grant awards required to meet the request for proposals by the College Football Playoff,” according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Mick Akers, who adds: “The budgeted amount includes an initial $25M and a $15M contingency.” In a statement, the LVCVA says: “Hosting the College Football Playoff National Championship Game has been a long-term goal of the LVCVA. This agenda item allows our CEO/President to execute an agreement with the CFP Group if and when Las Vegas is awarded the future championship.” Akers notes the expenses would go toward game management and event goods and services, marketing and advertising, event permits, team practice sites and facilities and law enforcement, security, and emergency response services. Surefire Baseball Forum and Penry Advisors Founder Jason Penry and Charlotte Executive Associate AD for Internal Affairs/baseball sport administrator Chris Thomasson sit down with Connect's Steph Garcia Cichosz to dive deep into all things collegiate baseball. Penry details the development of the Surefire Baseball Forum, now in its sixth iteration and starts tonight at Charlotte, noting that out of the 119 total coaches who have attended, 30 received their first Division I head coaching job after attending the event. Penry and Thomasson offer insight into the key learnings that assistant coaches usually need to make before landing a head coaching opportunity; share advice for new sport administrators; and reflect on how changes such as roster caps, the transfer portal and NIL could impact the sport long-term. For first-time baseball sport administrators, Thomasson advises building strong relationships with the coaches. “Get to know what buttons are important to them and then the other side of it is you’ve also got to set your expectations for them…especially if they’re new to the department. … Every institution is different, the expectations of that institution might be something they’ve never experienced before, so make sure you set those expectations.” Full Q&A on Connect. The Boston Globe’s Bob Hohler details the experiences of softball student-athletes playing for former Rhode Island HC Whitney Goldstein, including what the players call a “trauma dump” in which they were instructed to share the worst moments of their lives to reportedly foster team building and improve their performance. The former players believe Rams AD Thorr Bjorn should be held accountable not only for hiring Goldstein and the two previous softball coaches (who were also accused of abuse), but for making it difficult for them to file abuse complaints. Bjorn maintains that “as soon as we learned of the concerns of several of our softball student-athletes, we alerted all appropriate university officials. We supported and fully cooperated with an external, independent investigation, and the university acted promptly on the findings and recommendations.” URI declined to release the report, citing privacy laws, but said the inquiry determined that Bjorn followed all university policies and procedures. URI in a statement: “The university is fully supportive of Thorr and his leadership of the athletics department.” Lots more. (link)

The Power 4 leagues are working on a proposal that grants them the rights to manage postseason championships, such as the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, assuming control over events that have long been operated by the NCAA, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who explains the document “indicates a clear direction from the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC. They want an expansion of their previously existing autonomous legislative powers, not only for rulemaking and policy decision-making but for NCAA championships as well, controlling concepts like tournament format, revenue distribution and selection committee process. The proposal would create a new subdivision within the NCAA umbrella – an expected concept and one included in NCAA president Charlie Baker’s Project DI plan.” Each P4 commissioner has confirmed the existence of the “working document,” but SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey cautions the proposal is only a conversation starter. “There have been seven to eight months of discussions about the NCAA governance decision-making process. We have a responsibility to develop an idea. We’ve circulated this with our conferences. We’ve let the NCAA president know. This is an important time for change. We think it is important to provoke thought.” Both Sankey and Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark insist they have no desire to, as Yormark puts it, “compromise what makes college athletics so special,” but Dellenger notes there is already some concern. One FCS leader tells Dellenger: “This could be a real fight over the future of what college athletics looks like. At some point, we’re going to have to call their bluff and say, ‘Take your ball and go.’ It seems to me that we are increasingly closer to that happening.” (link)

Utah AD Mark Harlan talks with Deseret News’ Joe Coles in the first of a two-part interview about several topics, including his comments about the officiating crew following the football game against BYU. “I think as we talk about last season, just like Kyle [Whittingham] would say, there’s things that they need to improve on as we head into the next year, I would say the same of myself. I think that night, obviously, I reacted emotionally and my frustrations were expressed in a way that was not worthy of a true leader of a program of this stature. And certainly as any leader should, you learn and grow from those experiences.” Harlan goes on to note that retaining football players starts during the season because “until tampering rules are enforced by the NCAA, which they’re not, you’ve got to be the ones in the ears of your students early.” The Utes will go “all in” on revenue-sharing and Harlan says when it comes to generating additional revenue: “I think we really need to lean in on licensing. We need to improve our outreach in that regard. And other opportunities that we just didn’t think of. The NCAA is looking at loosening rules on a lot of different activities that you can do in the revenue space. And when those things happen, we want to be on the forefront of being able to do that.” More. (link)

Michigan State’s plans for a new arena that would be home to its volleyball, wrestling and gymnastics programs are “moving fast,” according to Spartans AD Alan Haller. “We've already had authorization to plan from the board. Hopefully at some point in the near future, we'll get authorization to proceed. We're working on a financial funding plan that's going to be separate than the stadium projects, and that's coming along really well. So this arena is going to happen.” In addition to hosting MSU sporting events, Haller says the “bigger vision is to have community events there as well. It allows potentially high school athletic events, commencements, small concerts. I just think it'll be an arena that'll be operating throughout the year.” The arena has yet to be named, and Haller notes that “if there's somebody out there that's listening that wants to put a dollar figure, that name could be theirs. … Sponsorship naming will be something that comes to our campus. And our community is going to have to wrap their arms around it, because it's a source of revenue.” Does that include Spartan Stadium? Haller says he’s “open to a lot of possibilities.” (link)

Penn State Football HC James Franklin believes an expanded College Football Playoff requires more uniformity throughout the sport, including every team’s inclusion in a conference, saying ahead of the upcoming CFP semifinal against Notre Dame: "It should be consistent across college football. This is no knock at [Fighting Irish HC Marcus Freeman] or Notre Dame, but I think everybody should be in a conference. I think everybody should play a conference championship game, or nobody should play a conference championship game. I think everybody should play the same number of conference games." Franklin also highlighted other areas where the sport could be more uniform, including starting the season a week earlier to ease the strain of playing more games with an expanded CFP. Further, Franklin reiterated his call for a college football commissioner, again nominating former Alabama HC Nick Saban, former Washington/Boise State HC Chris Petersen and former Wake Forest HC Dave Clawson as candidates. “We need somebody that is looking at it from a big-picture perspective.” Freeman, meanwhile, noted he doesn’t have a strong opinion on whether the sport needs more uniformity. "I'm a guy that just [thinks], 'Tell us what we're doing and let's go, and you move forward.’ I love where we're at right now. [Fighting Irish AD] Pete Bevacqua and our Notre Dame administration will continue to make decisions that are best for our program.” (link)

The AAC announces plans to honor former USF Men’s Basketball HC Amir Abdur-Rahim, who passed away in October. Abdur-Rahim has been named the Honorary 2024-25 ACC Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year, and his family will join Commissioner Tim Pernetti at the Bulls’ February 6 home game against Temple for the presentation of the award. The AAC will also donate $15K – the amount of Abdur-Rahim’s contracted bonus for winning the Coach of the Year honor – to the Future Foundation, a nonprofit organization that was close to Abdur-Rahim and his family’s hearts. Additionally, the AAC will honor Abdur-Rahim by permanently naming another postseason men's basketball honor in his name. The Amir Abdur-Rahim Sportsmanship Award will be presented annually to the men’s basketball student-athlete who, as determined by the league's head coaches, best exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship, fair play and leadership. The Texas beach volleyball program is the first to join with NIL company Franchise Mode, which allows fans to donate directly to entire athletic teams. Franchise Mode will go live the week of January 20, and is an extension of Booster’s business model, according to SBJ’s Irving Mejia-Hilario, who notes the student-athletes will pocket 80% of the money while Booster takes a 20% cut. Fans can donate to individual athletes through plans starting at $5 per month or entire teams for as low as $25 a month. Co-Founder/COO Ryan Simkin: “I don't think we're pivoting from individual athletes to teams, but I think we can grow exponentially faster through teams. Connectivity through social media is at an all-time high and we need to be the rising tide that lifts all boats.” (link)

SBJ’s Ethan Joyce catches up with several sports industry tech experts to get their predictions for 2025, and Pixellot President for North America David Shapiro predicts 2025 “will be the year of personalized data and highlights across every level of sports. With an unprecedented volume of real-time fan data now at their fingertips, forward-thinking organizations will understand their fans in new and unique ways and deploy advanced analytics to yield actionable insights to realize deeper fan engagement and loyalty.” (link)

The NBA is launching a league-wide biomechanics program through which motion capture labs will be installed at the training facilities of all 30 teams within a year. The program will start with the Utah Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers, Indiana Pacers and Phoenix Suns, and NBA EVP for Operations & Administration David Weiss tells SBJ’s Joe Lemire: “It's one of several major initiatives that we have in the works, including with the Players Association, to try to reduce injuries in the league. We're not aware of anything quite like this league-wide in the world.” P3, a private facility that independently has evaluated the biomechanics of roughly 70% of current NBA players, will work with the league as a consultant to the program, and the four companies that won the league’s RFP were Qualisys, Theia Markerless, Bertec and BreakAway Data. BreakAway CEO Dave Anderson, a former NFL WR, tells Lemire: [The NBA and NBAPA] are really trying to use science and numbers and research to make sure that the players are playing at the highest level. And I really appreciate that because a lot of these leagues are just adding games, changing roster sizes, and changing rules, and they just assume the players will figure it out. The NBA is taking this player-first initiative.” (link)
