Former National Basketball Players Association Executive Director Michele Roberts is “strongly considering making a formal objection to the House v. NCAA settlement,” according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit, who notes plaintiffs’ attorney Jeffrey Kessler is her “longtime friend and ally.” Specifically, Roberts tells Libit that she has been in recent discussions with another lawyer about signing her name to a filing opposing the settlement. Libit: “Roberts’ general contention is that too much of the deal – including its cap on athlete revenue-sharing – should be the product of collective bargaining and not settlement negotiations. Roberts also questions whether the class representatives in the case adequately speak for the interests of the athletes who she argues have the most to gain (or lose) financially—football and basketball players.” Roberts goes on to tell Libit: “I am troubled by the breadth of it. There is a cap in that settlement that Stevie Wonder could see should have been bargained for by a union. … I am a litigator. I understand why you resolve something and avoid the risk of litigation, and I can’t say that Jeffrey [Kessler] hasn’t made a deal that’s in the best interest of those students. I just don’t like the deal, and I’d like to think I wouldn’t have cut that deal.” She adds: “I think the industry for these students is at a crossroad and my fear is it is being decided with insufficient input from the students. The only reason I haven’t been much more critical is I do know Kessler and haven’t been involved in this for the months and years and years that he has. This may be the best he can get, but I still don’t like it.” (link)

Former On3 reporter Andy Wittry uses a combination of public comments and publicly available data, as well as insights from SANIL to lay out potential revenue-sharing models based on different athletic department profiles for AthleticDirectorU. Wittry starts by comparing Texas Tech, which recently divulged its revenue-sharing plan, and Missouri, whom Every True Tiger Brands invoiced for roughly $16.4M from September 2023 through December 2024. The monthly invoices show the number of recipients and amount owed by sport. The Red Raiders’ plan calls for 74% of the rev-share to be allocated to the football team, while Every true Tiger invoiced Mizzou for 64% of its allotment to football student-athletes. In men’s basketball, those numbers are ~18% and 23.3%, respectively. In women’s hoops, the respective allotments are 2% and 2.2%. Wittry adds more context by noting Mizzou “has attributed 72.2% of its attributable revenue to its football program, which has received 65.4% of the school’s payments to Every True Tiger. The men’s basketball program is credited with generating 23.2% of the department’s revenue and it has received 23.3% of the payments.” In examining how “basketball schools” will distribute revenue, Wittry notes the Connecticut men’s basketball program’s average revenue from the FY21 to FY23 was 50.3%, football’s was 18.7% and women's basketball was 11.2%. “Even if UConn only shares $10M with its athletes of its roughly $100M annual revenue (or roughly half of the proposed $20.5M cap), and if UConn’s revenue sharing distribution follows its athletic programs’ recent revenue attribution, the Huskies’ men’s basketball players would hypothetically receive roughly $5M and women’s basketball players would receive $1.1M.” More. Thursday’s Notre Dame vs. Penn State College Football Playoff semifinal at the Orange Bowl averaged an 8.9 rating and 17.8M viewers across ESPN (8.4, 16.92M), ESPN2 (0.39, 733K) and ESPNU (0.07, 144K), ranking just 16th out of the 21 total playoff semifinals thus far in the CFP era. That said, only one Orange Bowl in the playoff era has had a larger audience, Alabama vs. Oklahoma in December 2018 (19.07M). Sports Media Watch’s Jon Lewis observes: “Comparisons to past years are complicated by the new 12-team format, which has pushed the semifinals a full week past the New Year’s holiday. As a result, it should be no surprise that ratings and viewership fell sharply from last year’s first semifinal, Michigan vs. Alabama at the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day (13.0, 27.76M), and from TCU vs. Michigan at the Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Eve 2022 (10.0, 21.70M).” (link)

SBJ’s Bret McCormick reports Michigan State has issued a food & beverage RFP for its athletic facilities, which for years has been an in-house operation. More context from McCormick: “Responses to the Michigan State RFP are due Feb. 28 with the estimated decision date sometime in May. The new concessionaire would take over July 1 on a suggested five-year contract (though that’s negotiable). [....] Respondents are expected to present two financial proposals for consideration and need to use any products that Michigan State has sponsorship deals with (which would be arranged through Playfly Sports). Michigan State’s deal with pouring rightsholder Pepsi-Cola expires June 30.” (link)

The Athletic’s Manny Navarro and Bruce Feldman take a look behind the scenes of former Georgia QB Carson Beck’s commitment to Miami (FL) and note that despite reports Beck will earn $4M to be the Canes’ new QB, he will will actually receive closer to $3M, which is “roughly double the $1.6M Heisman Trophy finalist Cam Ward earned through Miami’s collective (not including additional deals with Adidas, Bose and others) when he led the No. 1 scoring offense in college football this past season.” With uncertainty regarding what Texas QB Quinn Ewers’ future looked like in regards to the NFL, Canes OC Shannon Dawson says Beck, who won’t throw for a few months as he recovers from surgery to repair his UCL, was the only QB he liked in the portal. Dawson also reached out to Baltimore Ravens OC Todd Monken, who had been Beck’s coach at Georgia from 2020 to ’22. Monken had nothing but praise for Beck, calling him an elite talent. Also from Navarro and Feldman: “The other compelling factor: Beck, like Ward, is highly motivated to prove himself to NFL teams in his final college season. Miami believes it is putting Beck in a similar situation to flourish as it did with Ward, who also declared for the draft before deciding to return for another season of college football and transfer.” More. BYU Senior Associate AD of External Operations David Almodova joins Connect's Kristen Eargle in this episode of The Career Hustle to discuss what skill is most important as athletics shifts and what great leaders inspired him as a young professional. “Early on, I was a sponge: listening, learning and watching. When I was at Duke, I had the opportunity to watch Coach Mike Krzyzewski and his basketball program.” Almodova says seeing how he led, engaged with his student-athletes, coaches and his family gave him a vision and confidence of the type of leader he wanted to be. Strong communication skills, Almodova continues, will always be crucial for leaders in this industry, but he admits: “I”m not the greatest at it. I’m still learning even though I’ve been in this business for a while. It’s still something I try to work on every day just to make sure everyone around you knows what's going on, making sure that everyone's on the same page, everyone knows the vision, everyone knows the plan.” Almodova embraces the “Aloha spirit” when adapting to various leadership styles and explains: “For me, it’s getting to know people on a personal level: what they like, what they're passionate about. Learn about their families if they're married and have kids – just trying to dig in deep with those who I associate myself with because I think once you know people, who they truly are, you have a better understanding for how they're going to work. What tips them off? What gets them excited? … I love seeing people succeed, and if I can just help in any way, that's a win for me.” Full Q&A on Connect. (link)

Cable TV isn’t dead yet, according to Sportico’s Anthony Crupi, but it’s probably not “going to pull a Lazarus, either. Once a staple in 91% of all U.S. TV households, the bundle’s penetration has plunged to 38%. Per MoffettNathanson analysis, even when you toss the 20.3M virtual MVPD subs into the mix, total pay-TV penetration of occupied homes has been winnowed down to 51%.” In the last five years, 35.4M customers have canceled their subscriptions. “Go back 10 years and cable’s body count stands at 51.5M souls.” That said, Crupi points out that “even if the cord-cutting movement continues at the same dizzying clip, the bundle’s vanishing point is still a long way off. Given another 12% year-to-year decline, the sub base will be down to 42.5M by the end of the third quarter of 2025. Give it another year and operators are looking at a crowd of 37.4M customers at the end of September 2026; one more trip around the sun further diminishes the count to 32.9M. All things being equal, the bundle could be whittled all the way down to 5.4M subs by 2040, although by then we’ll all probably have bigger problems to worry about. … Even if MoffettNathanson’s projections hold up and equilibrium is achieved between the traditional pay-TV operators and the skinny-bundle crowd, the number of homes that subscribe to either service will slip below the 50 million mark in just four years’ time. Two steps forward, one step back, and before you know it, the streaming trillionaires will be shoveling the last spadeful of dirt onto a lonely patch of earth that was once a playground for 105 million consumers.” (link)

Washington State AD Anne McCoy visits with KOMO News, notes the tight-lipped Football head coaching search she just completed alongside Collegiate Sports Associates: “It’s kind of amazing (that Jimmy Rogers’ name didn’t get leaked) when you think about it. It’s always a fascinating process. When we got to the point where we knew he was going to be the one we thought, ‘Oh, people are going to be really surprised.’ It speaks a lot to everyone involved from the candidates to people on our staff who respected the privacy of the process so we could work through it not in the public light.” McCoy also talks NIL: “It’s so new and even in the way we can be involved due to changes in state laws and changes in the NCAA. [...] We’re working toward being able to have donors and investors give money to the institution for NIL, but not at the expense of the collective.” More. (link)

Clemson-affiliated 110 Society General Manager C.D. Davies with some interesting thoughts on the future of his position & the role of collectives. Davies, who is a longtime banking executive, explains: “It'd be nice to be a football fan again and not have to run through calculations in my head every time I see somebody score a touchdown. [...] It's funny, I run a collective but I'm not really in agreement with collectives. If your collective has a bunch of money, and they're at odds with what's going on at the university, or they don't agree, that could be a problem. Luckily, we don't have any of that. I just think having third parties out of this will be best when it's the right time.” In the event the House case doesn’t get settled, Davies recognizes his responsibilities will continue: “You've got to have all your irons in the fire so you can be nimble.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner writes on jockeying for a potential Super League, which he contends could occur with new media deals in the 2030s: “If the super league forms in the mid 2030s and if there are anywhere from 48 to 60 members, success on the field through the 2020s could determine which schools make the cut. Nobody wants to be excluded. If you’re excluded, revenue craters, fans interest dwindles and the brand value of your institution eventually drops. (Also, the president and athletic director get fired.) That’s why Arizona State must continue the success it experienced this season. That’s why Colorado needs to remain relevant, with or without Deion Sanders, and Utah must reclaim its high ground, without or without Kyle Whittingham. That’s why Cal and Stanford and Arizona and UCLA must find solutions and overcome their unique challenges. Any teams that flounder over the next five or six years — any teams that are viewed as second-rate performers with low brand value — could get left behind. Consider the race for invitations to a super league featuring every school in the SEC (16) and Big Ten (18), the ACC’s big three and Notre Dame. That’s 38 members. If there are 10 more spots — to create eight divisions of six teams — the Pac-12 legacy schools mentioned above would face competition from the likes of Oklahoma State, Miami, Brigham Young, Duke, Iowa State, SMU and a few others. One thing will fuel separation: winning.” (link)

The D1.dossier for the AD opening at Army West Point is ready to be a valuable resource for those of you going after the post. In 2024, more than 100 AD candidates used a dossier to save dozens of hours of research & be better prepared for the interview process. Coastal Carolina AD Chance Miller: “The D1.dossier was extremely helpful for the interview process by identifying the key stakeholders and providing the current landscape at Coastal Carolina. It saved me a tremendous amount of time from having to research and gather it myself. I appreciate the service and highly recommend it to my counterparts around the country.” (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann breaks down the lawsuit between Southern Miss Men’s Basketball student-athlete John Wade III & the NCAA as Wade attempts to gain even more eligibility after stops at UC Davis, Contra Costa College (CCCAA), Cal State Northridge & Cal State Stanislaus (DII). McCann: “If the five-year rule were eliminated, college athletes could conceivably have long careers—akin to pro athletes—provided they remain full-time students at their university. As detailed in a memorandum filed on Thursday and authored by attorney J. Cal Mayo, Jr., the NCAA defends the five-year rule as both compliant with antitrust law and logical within the context of college education. [...] The NCAA’s motion to dismiss argues that Wade has failed to offer persuasive reasons to gain another year of eligibility. As the NCAA tells it, Wade ‘simply contends that the five-year rule is not fair to him.’ The NCAA argues that Wade fails to offer any ‘empirical data, expert opinions, or market analysis’ to show the five-year rule unreasonably restrains the market for current and future D-1 college basketball players, such as analysis of consumer impact (i.e., will fans want to watch college teams with players who have been playing in college for many years) or on impact of new players who want to blend education and sports.’” (link)

ESM Co-Founder/Partner Dan Everett, who serves as Georgia-to-Miami (FL) transfer Carson Beck’s agent, tells Front Office Sports that Beck has secured nearly $10M in combined NIL deals in the past 12 months from a mix of his brand deals and money from the Miami NIL collective, Canes Connection. Beck’s brand partners include Beats by Dre, Powerade, Chipotle, and Airstar Charter. (link)

UCLA Men’s Basketball HC Mick Cronin, following his ejection from Friday’s game at Maryland, explains the impact of the Palisades Fire: “It's the worst situation back home that puts a lot of stuff in perspective. The basketball stuff's secondary, to be honest with you, it really is. … It's just, it's beyond tragic and it's not over, is the scary part.” Cronin voices additional concerns from the evening regarding Big Ten officiating: “I had enough. I'm sending a message. I'm tired of it. I know we're the outsider and all that — us, USC and Oregon — but that was ridiculous. You get on the road against a team that's 1-2 in the league, but they're really a top 25 team … they're gonna do whatever they've got to do. And we needed some stronger officials on the game, in my opinion.” (link)

Due to the ongoing Palisades Fire and travel conditions in Los Angeles impacting Loyola Marymount’s travel plans, the Pepperdine men's and women's basketball games originally scheduled for yesterday, have been postponed. As of January 10, the Palisades Fire was approximately 2.5 miles from Pepperdine’s campus. (link, link); Loyola Marymount also postponed its women’s basketball game against San Diego on Thursday. North Carolina public universities have received $17.3M in revenue from sports betting taxes, representing 20% of the $98.6M in total tax revenue collected from the new tax between March and November of 2024. As previously reported, 20% sports gambling tax revenue is required to be distributed evenly among 13 state universities to support the collegiate athletic departments. Between April and September of 2024, $1.32M was transferred to each of the 13 UNC system institutions eligible for funding. (link)

The average NFL crowd size in 2024 rose by 0.45% to 69,555, the highest number since the Sports Business Journal started tracking attendance 21 seasons ago. However, because the total inventory increased with the 17-game schedule’s extra home game swinging back to larger-market NFC venues, the percentage of seating capacity used actually declined by 0.3 percentage points. Across the league, 98.3% of listed capacity was distributed, down from 98.6% last year. All but five teams distributed at least 95% of their capacity, and the five international games sold out. For more than three-quarters of the league, attendance fluctuated by less than 1% up or down. The only teams to grow by more than 1% were the Atlanta Falcons (+2.6%), the Arizona Cardinals (+1.8%) and the New York Jets (+1.3%). The big losers were the Jacksonville Jaguars (-6.2%), Chicago Bears (-5.6%), Carolina Panthers (-1.3%) and New York Giants (-1.1%). (link)
