The NCAA provides a rundown of the NCAA Convention agenda and notes that all three divisions will vote on a recommendation to make women's wrestling an NCAA championship sport. If approved, it will become the NCAA's 91st championship and the sixth sport to reach NCAA championship status through the Emerging Sports for Women program. Division I will hold a full membership vote on a proposal to create women's basketball distribution funds that reward participation and performance in the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship. If approved, teams competing in the 2025 tournament will begin earning distributions that will be paid out to conference offices starting in 2026. Additionally, members of both the DI Council and the DI Board of Directors continue to consider interim policy and legislative priorities in anticipation of implementation of the preliminarily approved House, et al. settlement. Featured education sessions include a look at the NCAA’s impact on the Paris Olympics, how sports betting is impacting student-athletes, student-athlete health, safety and performance, and expanding opportunities for women’s sports. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that the NCAA and plaintiffs have failed to reach a settlement regarding the injunction that permits players to negotiate with collectives before enrolling, and the NCAA has now asked for an extension to respond – “a sign the association may fight the case in court.” Boise State law professor Sam Ehrlich adds: “This is notable since the NCAA had already asked for (and received) five extensions before this one. All five were filed jointly (meaning the state AGs supported the extension request). Number six...not so much. So yeah, seems like settlement talks aren't going well.” The original complaint was filed by the AGs in Virginia and Tennessee. (link, link)

Former Minnesota regent/College Basketball Players Association Co-Founder Michael Hsu says the CBPA is weighing its options in the wake of Dartmouth and the NCPA withdrawing student-athlete employment efforts for the time being. The CBPA previously filed unfair labor practice charges against Notre Dame, Northwestern, Dartmouth, the NCAA and the Ivy League arguing that DI student-athletes are employees within the meaning of the NLRA. Hsu emphasizes to Sportico’s Michael McCann, though, that no matter the procedural posture of NLRB efforts to recognize college athletes as employees, the merits of the legal argument have only become more persuasive as college sports has become increasingly commercialized. “I’m more convinced than ever that DI college athletes are employees within the meaning of the NLRA. There is no debate they’re generating billions of dollars for the industry or that they’re under the control of their schools, conference and the NCAA. Whether their recognition as employees happens through the NLRB, at the state level or through litigation remains to be seen but it will happen.” (link)

Murray State raised over $21.5M in 2024, making it the most successful fundraising year in Racers history. Racers AD Nico Yantko: "We are incredibly fortunate to have loyal investors who believe in our shared vision for excellence and have helped us achieve this historic fundraising year. Since my arrival in 2022, Racer Nation has been transformational and has propelled our vision forward. Every person matters and every dollar counts, so we are truly grateful for each one of our donors for their support of our more than 430 student-athletes, coaches, and staff. We are excited for what the future holds as a result of this record-breaking success." (link)

Colorado is cutting ties with the 5430 Alliance, which has spent the last 10 months as CU’s official collective. Buffs AD Rick George: “We are restructuring our NIL procedures in order to be prepared for the changes to come. … I feel these changes will not only keep CU the gold standard in student-athlete support but also make it easier for fans like you to invest in our student-athletes at a time when it is most crucial.” In an email to fans, George also indicated donors should consider “financially investing” in Colorado athletics through donations to the Buff Club’s AD Excellence Fund or Sport Excellence Fund, “which makes giving to third-party collectives like the 5430 Alliance unnecessary.” He said donors can also work with college athletes directly through CU’s NIL Exchange. Meanwhile, Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders tells the seniors on his team that “when you stop going to class and I see a multitude of F’s and D’s, we’re going to affect your check. … That’s the way it is in the pros. When you stop doing certain things that you’re supposed to do, that you signed up to do, you’re gonna be affected. So, we’re going to do that.” (link); Tennessee Men’s Basketball HC Rick Barnes says he benched Chaz Lanier, the Vols’ leading scorer, during last weekend’s win over Texas because "he didn't shoot the ball. That play is designed for that shot. I told him, 'If you're not going to do what you're getting paid to do, then you're going to sit over here.' Because he is getting paid to do that.” (link); Southern Miss Football HC Charles Huff told coaches at the AFCA Convention that the biggest issue he ran into last season in the locker room wasn’t NIL or social media but players complaining about their ratings on College Football 25. Some even came to his office to complain about their “low” rating, per CBS/247’s Brandon Marcello. (link)

The Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty takes a look at Ohio State’s offseason football changes, including the construction of a $20M roster and a reshuffling of HC Ryan Day’s duties. The hire of OC Chip Kelly, Dougherty points out, “would allow Day to focus more on fundraising and roster-building” as well as the other off-field tasks that Kelly “hates about modern college football.” THE Foundation Founder Brian Schottenstein tells Dougherty: “Most of the communication with Coach Day and myself was: ‘How do we raise money?’ The coaches are allowed to call donors. And that was one of the big changes this year, that he freed himself up to have more time to focus on NIL in the offseason. He was incredible.” In fact, one NIL agent says: “When it comes to business partnerships, I don’t think there’s a collective in the country that can compete with what Ohio State does. It’s not even close, really, just in that they can take their offers and supercharge them by saying: ‘This deal with so and so company is set up for you. It adds this much value. Now let’s sign.’” More. (link)

Strong jobs data means the Federal Reserve is likely to continue a pause on rate cuts, according to Bloomberg’s Augusta Saraiva and Ye Xie. Saraiva points out that “nonfarm payrolls increased 256K in December, the most since March,” per a Bureau of Labor Statistics report. Moreover, the report included annual revisions to the unemployment rate. “Notably, the peak rate in July — which was initially reported as 4.3% and helped lay the groundwork for a full percentage point of rate cuts by the Fed later in the year — was revised lower, suggesting the labor market was somewhat more resilient over the summer than previously thought.” UBS Global Wealth Management Senior U.S. Economist Brian Rose: “Given the overall strength of the recent economic data, there is little reason for the Fed to consider cutting rates anytime soon.” Meanwhile, Xie points out that Bank of America economists also believe the “cutting cycle is over” and expect the conversation to move to rate hikes in the event inflation creeps back over 3%. Former National Basketball Players Association Executive Director Michele Roberts is “strongly considering making a formal objection to the House v. NCAA settlement,” according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit, who notes plaintiffs’ attorney Jeffrey Kessler is her “longtime friend and ally.” Specifically, Roberts tells Libit that she has been in recent discussions with another lawyer about signing her name to a filing opposing the settlement. Libit: “Roberts’ general contention is that too much of the deal – including its cap on athlete revenue-sharing – should be the product of collective bargaining and not settlement negotiations. Roberts also questions whether the class representatives in the case adequately speak for the interests of the athletes who she argues have the most to gain (or lose) financially—football and basketball players.” Roberts goes on to tell Libit: “I am troubled by the breadth of it. There is a cap in that settlement that Stevie Wonder could see should have been bargained for by a union. … I am a litigator. I understand why you resolve something and avoid the risk of litigation, and I can’t say that Jeffrey [Kessler] hasn’t made a deal that’s in the best interest of those students. I just don’t like the deal, and I’d like to think I wouldn’t have cut that deal.” She adds: “I think the industry for these students is at a crossroad and my fear is it is being decided with insufficient input from the students. The only reason I haven’t been much more critical is I do know Kessler and haven’t been involved in this for the months and years and years that he has. This may be the best he can get, but I still don’t like it.” (link)

Former On3 reporter Andy Wittry uses a combination of public comments and publicly available data, as well as insights from SANIL to lay out potential revenue-sharing models based on different athletic department profiles for AthleticDirectorU. Wittry starts by comparing Texas Tech, which recently divulged its revenue-sharing plan, and Missouri, whom Every True Tiger Brands invoiced for roughly $16.4M from September 2023 through December 2024. The monthly invoices show the number of recipients and amount owed by sport. The Red Raiders’ plan calls for 74% of the rev-share to be allocated to the football team, while Every true Tiger invoiced Mizzou for 64% of its allotment to football student-athletes. In men’s basketball, those numbers are ~18% and 23.3%, respectively. In women’s hoops, the respective allotments are 2% and 2.2%. Wittry adds more context by noting Mizzou “has attributed 72.2% of its attributable revenue to its football program, which has received 65.4% of the school’s payments to Every True Tiger. The men’s basketball program is credited with generating 23.2% of the department’s revenue and it has received 23.3% of the payments.” In examining how “basketball schools” will distribute revenue, Wittry notes the Connecticut men’s basketball program’s average revenue from the FY21 to FY23 was 50.3%, football’s was 18.7% and women's basketball was 11.2%. “Even if UConn only shares $10M with its athletes of its roughly $100M annual revenue (or roughly half of the proposed $20.5M cap), and if UConn’s revenue sharing distribution follows its athletic programs’ recent revenue attribution, the Huskies’ men’s basketball players would hypothetically receive roughly $5M and women’s basketball players would receive $1.1M.” More. Thursday’s Notre Dame vs. Penn State College Football Playoff semifinal at the Orange Bowl averaged an 8.9 rating and 17.8M viewers across ESPN (8.4, 16.92M), ESPN2 (0.39, 733K) and ESPNU (0.07, 144K), ranking just 16th out of the 21 total playoff semifinals thus far in the CFP era. That said, only one Orange Bowl in the playoff era has had a larger audience, Alabama vs. Oklahoma in December 2018 (19.07M). Sports Media Watch’s Jon Lewis observes: “Comparisons to past years are complicated by the new 12-team format, which has pushed the semifinals a full week past the New Year’s holiday. As a result, it should be no surprise that ratings and viewership fell sharply from last year’s first semifinal, Michigan vs. Alabama at the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day (13.0, 27.76M), and from TCU vs. Michigan at the Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Eve 2022 (10.0, 21.70M).” (link)

SBJ’s Bret McCormick reports Michigan State has issued a food & beverage RFP for its athletic facilities, which for years has been an in-house operation. More context from McCormick: “Responses to the Michigan State RFP are due Feb. 28 with the estimated decision date sometime in May. The new concessionaire would take over July 1 on a suggested five-year contract (though that’s negotiable). [....] Respondents are expected to present two financial proposals for consideration and need to use any products that Michigan State has sponsorship deals with (which would be arranged through Playfly Sports). Michigan State’s deal with pouring rightsholder Pepsi-Cola expires June 30.” (link)

The Athletic’s Manny Navarro and Bruce Feldman take a look behind the scenes of former Georgia QB Carson Beck’s commitment to Miami (FL) and note that despite reports Beck will earn $4M to be the Canes’ new QB, he will will actually receive closer to $3M, which is “roughly double the $1.6M Heisman Trophy finalist Cam Ward earned through Miami’s collective (not including additional deals with Adidas, Bose and others) when he led the No. 1 scoring offense in college football this past season.” With uncertainty regarding what Texas QB Quinn Ewers’ future looked like in regards to the NFL, Canes OC Shannon Dawson says Beck, who won’t throw for a few months as he recovers from surgery to repair his UCL, was the only QB he liked in the portal. Dawson also reached out to Baltimore Ravens OC Todd Monken, who had been Beck’s coach at Georgia from 2020 to ’22. Monken had nothing but praise for Beck, calling him an elite talent. Also from Navarro and Feldman: “The other compelling factor: Beck, like Ward, is highly motivated to prove himself to NFL teams in his final college season. Miami believes it is putting Beck in a similar situation to flourish as it did with Ward, who also declared for the draft before deciding to return for another season of college football and transfer.” More. BYU Senior Associate AD of External Operations David Almodova joins Connect's Kristen Eargle in this episode of The Career Hustle to discuss what skill is most important as athletics shifts and what great leaders inspired him as a young professional. “Early on, I was a sponge: listening, learning and watching. When I was at Duke, I had the opportunity to watch Coach Mike Krzyzewski and his basketball program.” Almodova says seeing how he led, engaged with his student-athletes, coaches and his family gave him a vision and confidence of the type of leader he wanted to be. Strong communication skills, Almodova continues, will always be crucial for leaders in this industry, but he admits: “I”m not the greatest at it. I’m still learning even though I’ve been in this business for a while. It’s still something I try to work on every day just to make sure everyone around you knows what's going on, making sure that everyone's on the same page, everyone knows the vision, everyone knows the plan.” Almodova embraces the “Aloha spirit” when adapting to various leadership styles and explains: “For me, it’s getting to know people on a personal level: what they like, what they're passionate about. Learn about their families if they're married and have kids – just trying to dig in deep with those who I associate myself with because I think once you know people, who they truly are, you have a better understanding for how they're going to work. What tips them off? What gets them excited? … I love seeing people succeed, and if I can just help in any way, that's a win for me.” Full Q&A on Connect. (link)

Cable TV isn’t dead yet, according to Sportico’s Anthony Crupi, but it’s probably not “going to pull a Lazarus, either. Once a staple in 91% of all U.S. TV households, the bundle’s penetration has plunged to 38%. Per MoffettNathanson analysis, even when you toss the 20.3M virtual MVPD subs into the mix, total pay-TV penetration of occupied homes has been winnowed down to 51%.” In the last five years, 35.4M customers have canceled their subscriptions. “Go back 10 years and cable’s body count stands at 51.5M souls.” That said, Crupi points out that “even if the cord-cutting movement continues at the same dizzying clip, the bundle’s vanishing point is still a long way off. Given another 12% year-to-year decline, the sub base will be down to 42.5M by the end of the third quarter of 2025. Give it another year and operators are looking at a crowd of 37.4M customers at the end of September 2026; one more trip around the sun further diminishes the count to 32.9M. All things being equal, the bundle could be whittled all the way down to 5.4M subs by 2040, although by then we’ll all probably have bigger problems to worry about. … Even if MoffettNathanson’s projections hold up and equilibrium is achieved between the traditional pay-TV operators and the skinny-bundle crowd, the number of homes that subscribe to either service will slip below the 50 million mark in just four years’ time. Two steps forward, one step back, and before you know it, the streaming trillionaires will be shoveling the last spadeful of dirt onto a lonely patch of earth that was once a playground for 105 million consumers.” (link)
