The NCAA voices its opposition to the California bill which seeks to codify student-athletes’ rights to share revenue with their schools. NCAA SVP of External Affairs Buckley tells USA Today’s Berkowitz that “the NCAA believes the California legislation is the wrong solution at the wrong time. It will only further complicate an already murky picture while we’re working with Congress to create a uniform playing field in this space. I think we will see something emerge on the Senate side. Another state law at this time is not the right fix.” Buckley said he could not provide any details about when a Senate proposal would be made and by whom it would be made.

WCC Commissioner Jackson officially takes over today and says of the league’s trajectory: “It was just Gonzaga. Then it was Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s. And now we’re able to throw a couple more schools at least into the competitive mix. Will it trickle down to the schools that haven’t had as much success? I think so. The bar is there.” On the WCC’s position within the overall college sports landscape, Jackson says: “Everything is on the table as we look at how to elevate our Conference. We need to stay abreast of what is happening in this changing landscape. For us, relevancy is the key. When you talk about relevancy in college sports, you have to look at areas like the way conferences are growing and realigning. You have to look at the current broadcast setup and where you want to be. … It doesn’t mean we’re going to go out and do anything drastic. However, we have to stay on top of what is going on in this business, be as proactive as we can in an effort to enhance ourselves as a conference.” (link)

As he settles into his new role, Ball State AD Mitchell covers several topics with the Muncie Star Press, including the need for more “depth” in his staff. “In a sports team, you win with depth, and it's the same thing in healthy organizations. So I've got a couple of ideas that I'm working on to create some depth, to add some personnel within the department to help us be more effective and efficient in what we're trying to do.” One area where building depth can provide tangible ROI is ticket sales, and Mitchell says there are strategies to drive engagement to that end. “That goes back to the notion of creating depth in our staff is to be able to execute plans. We can think of ideas all day long, but if we don't have the bandwidth to actually go and execute, then it really doesn't mean much.” Full Q&A. (link)

FCS Playoff Committee Chair/Bucknell AD Truax and committee member/North Dakota State AD Larsen say they have forwarded several postseason change recommendations to the Football Oversight Committee. While they declined to go into specifics, Larsen acknowledges the general feeling from those who submitted proposals was to increase the number of seeded teams from eight to 16, and Inforum’s McFeely notes that “seeding 16 teams eliminates programs being able to ‘buy’ home games with high bids while erasing the appearance that lesser-deserving teams receive home games because they bid more money. Other than that, the playoff format would remain largely the same. … The biggest change would come in the first round. Seeds 9-16 would automatically host, presuming they submitted the minimum bid required by the NCAA, playing the unseeded final eight teams.” (link)

Northwestern has unveiled the R.I.S.E. (Respect, Integrity, Service, Excellence) Northwestern five-year strategic plan, which will build on the four key focus areas of Student-Athlete Experience; Competitive Success; Organizational Effectiveness; and Community Engagement. Wildcats AD Gragg: “In February 2022 we began a process that solicited input from more than 1,500 constituents, in order to understand where the Department of Athletics and Recreation stands and where it will advance from here. The result will guide our decision-making, allocation of resources, and daily commitment to who we are and who we aspire to become” Full plan. (link)

Oklahoma State will not open its football season on a Thursday this year to the chagrin of HC Gundy. The reason, Cowboys Senior Assoc. AD for Communication Klintworth explains, is because the Big 12 assigned OSU a Friday night game on October 6 against Kansas State, and the school doesn’t want to play two non-Saturday home games. Klintworth: “When you get into two non-Saturday games, it makes it tough on fans.” Tough on local business owners too, according to The Oklahoman’s Tramel, who notes a “game day in Stillwater is huge for the local economy, but that impact is fractured when playing on a Thursday night, since most fans come in much later in the day and more often head out after the game. The Athletic’s Tucker and Marks attempt to parse what’s real and what’s not when it comes to NIL numbers being tossed around in men’s basketball, and one SEC coach tells them he recently met with a recruit who believed another athlete at his school had made seven figures in NIL compensation. The unnamed coach: “Not even close. Those NIL valuation tools and reports that are out there are a complete joke — and they do more harm than good. Nobody knows what is real in NIL.” Miami (FL) MBB HC Larranaga consequently calls for more transparency. “You can go online and look up what everybody in the NBA is being paid. At public universities, you can find out what everybody (employed by the school) is making. I think kids are misled so much that they think, oh, I’m going to get a million dollars from this school. And it’s nowhere near that.” (link)

The Miami (FL)-focused Cane Connection collective has “received donations from several wealthy donors, all of whom have expressed a desire to not be identified publicly,” according to the Miami Herald’s Jackson, Kaufman and Degnan, who report Hurricanes AD Radakovich has taken a more active role promoting the collective after the Florida legislature passed a law allowing schools to help administer their collectives. Jackson, et al. also report LifeWallet CEO Ruiz remains actively involved in the NIL space despite news of recent financial troubles at the company. (link)

+ Wichita State Men’s Basketball HC Nooner’s five-year contract is worth $1.7M before bonuses for an average salary of $341K per year. Beginning after his second season, Nooner will begin earning a retention bonus every July 1 he remains the head coach at WSU. That figure starts at $20K in 2025 and increases to $35K in 2026 and $50K in 2027. Lots more on incentives in the article. Endeavor is selling IMG Academy to BPEA EQT, an Asia-focused private equity fund, for $1.25B, Sportico’s Coffey reports. Endeavor President/COO Shapiro says the company wasn’t “in the market looking to sell IMG Academy; we were proactively approached from the outside with such a significant offer that we had a duty to listen. That month-long process resulted in this sale with not only an incredible financial transaction for Endeavor, but also we’re landing IMG Academy [with an] ideal steward to protect its life legacy and grow its fortunes.” Shapiro also insists the sale is unrelated to the recent acquisition of WWE and does not indicate any shift in Endeavor’s plans, as IMG Academy was a non-core operation of the business. The New York Post’s Richter takes a look at PointsBet’s potential sale, noting the company has retained investment bank Moelis & Co. to help accelerate its exit from the North American sports betting market. Acies Investment Partner Grove says PointsBet, the seventh-largest sportsbook, “represents an attractive opportunity to acquire a proven operational team, a proprietary technology stack, existing market share and user base.” However, Richter notes that potential candidates for a sale are difficult to sort through. Fanatics seems unlikely having just acquired the source code from Amelco. DraftKings has been the most active in buying up competitors and will likely listen, and Richter notes there has been some speculation that Bally’s could be in the market depending on the price. As for the price, Richter notes the $500M asking price from WynnBet is “is likely the best launching point for PointsBet.” (link)
