Ohio State’s Natty…
+ Congratulations to the Buckeyes for their victory last night in Atlanta. Head Coach Ryan Day: “The story gets to get told now. It's a great story about a bunch of guys who have overcome some really tough situations. There was a point where there was a lot of people that counted us out, and we just kept swinging and kept fighting. It's the reason you get into coaching, to see guys overcome things, learn life lessons, and then reach their dreams. This is what happened tonight.” (link)

+ The get-in price for last night’s College Football National Championship increased by over 2x throughout the day to $4,714, which cllct Founder Darren Rovell notes “represents a cautionary tale for the ‘It’s always cheaper to wait’ crowd.” (link)
+ ESPN provided the following statement when asked about airing a recorded message from President Trump during halftime of last night’s College Football Playoff championship: “With Donald Trump’s Inauguration occurring on the day of the CFP National Championship, it makes sense to include a message from the President, a practice that occurs regularly during major sporting events – including earlier this month from President Biden before the Sugar Bowl.” (link)

Marquette is expected to promote Deputy AD/COO Mike Broeker to AD, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Broecker has been with the Golden Eagles for 21 years, including the last 18 as Deputy AD. (link)

Appalachian State AD Doug Gillin has agreed to an extension through January 31, 2029, per CollegeAD, which reports Gillin will earn $560K in base pay this year and receive 4% annual raises, bringing his salary up to nearly $640K in the final year. Under the terms of the new agreement, Gillin would not owe App State a buyout for leaving as long as he provides sufficient advance notice. The contract was otherwise unaltered, meaning Gillin is still in line for $50K retention bonuses each year and the Mountaineers would owe him his remaining base salary for ending the contract without cause. WUNC’s Brianna Atkinson catches up with several ADs in North Carolina to find out how they’re utilizing the funding provided by sports gambling taxes, and Western Carolina AD Alex Gary explains: "Had it not been for the gaming receipts, we would have had to either cut expenses significantly or depend on our university to bail us out. Or continue to ratchet up on student fees. I can't express enough how much help we've gotten just off of taking care of expenses." Appalachian State plans to use the $3.3M it received to help fund a new indoor practice facility. The project will cost at least $29 million total and is set to take almost a year and a half to complete. Mountaineers AD Doug Gillin says future funding will likely be used for travel expenses. "Travel is key for us in a rural location. We have to drive two hours to the airport. The funding source relieves pressure on our operating budget, which is how we travel, how we train – food, lodging, other expenses. I think those are all things that this will help as we continue to grow. And certainly, college athletics is really changing, and that gives you some potential flexibility." North Carolina A&T AD Earl Hilton: "Within the last few years, we have allocated funds toward extra trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, nutritionists, and mental health experts to work with our student-athletes. In the future, we hope to add personnel to enhance our productivity and improve the student-athlete experience.” More from Tar Heel State ADs. (link)

The Eastern Michigan men’s basketball program remains under investigation for suspicious betting activity, and Eagles Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs Greg Steiner tells the Detroit Free Press’ Tony Garcia: "We became aware of the matter on Wednesday. At this time, we do not know anything further about what may have precipitated the suspicious activity. … We are working with the Mid-American Conference and will provide further details as we learn additional information.” (link)

Heitner Legal Founder Darren Heitner joins The Paul Finebaum Show to discuss his client, Wisconsin WR Xavier Lucas’, unexpectedly byzantine transfer to Miami (FL) and says he was surprised “that our overtures were rejected when we simply asked them to put Xavier’s name in the portal as you’re required to do under NCAA rules and they refused to do so. So this is a case of first impression. I was also surprised when the NCAA came out with a statement and said, ‘Hey, you guys are right, you don’t have to go through the transfer portal. If a player simply unenrolls and decides to apply for admission elsewhere, there’s nothing we, the NCAA, can do about that.’ And I’m really interested to see what the fallout is for that. Now, a lot of people are speculating and saying this means players will be able to unenroll in the middle of the season and be admitted elsewhere or even unenroll in the middle of the game and play for the other team. No. There’s still an NCAA bylaw that restricts that. You can’t play for another team within the same academic calendar. So we’re not going that far just yet.” (link)

American Volleyball Coaches Association CEO Dr. Jaime Gordon joins D1.ticker’s Kristen Eargle to highlight the strong trajectory of women’s indoor volleyball and why the sport has resonated with fans and advertisers, as well as offer his perspective on what rules changes could improve the spectator experience. Regarding the sport’s growth, Gordon points out there were about 44 DI attendance records broken during this last season and adds: “Another exciting part for me is we’re doing it on the back of the sport in general and the experience that we’re having. We’re not being carried by one particular personality. We don’t have the benefit of a Caitlin Clark effect and so I think that trajectory continues to be consistent and we’re excited about it.” In particular, Gordon cites the sport’s popularity among adults under 35 and its percentage of female viewership (41-43%) as a primary driver of increased inventory distribution on TV. “Two years ago, we had never had a college volleyball match on network television. Last year, there were two and then this season that we just came off of we had eight network broadcasts. So, again that's Fox, ABC, NBC and so I think we're seeing that interest in that investment not just in the windows, but also in the production levels from Fox, Disney, NBC, CBS because of the market that you're talking about.” When it comes to rules changes, Gordon believes the product is “really good” from the time the ball is served until the time a point is scored, “but that time in between can use a little bit of tweaking.” Specifically, Gordon cites the length of timeouts, making replays more efficient and the possible addition of a serve clock as potential ways to improve the overall fan experience. Check out the full Q&A. (link)

The Athletic's Grace Raynor profiles Michael Barker, who attended 100 college football games this season. Barker, who runs the popular X account College Football Campus Tour, attended 13 games during the 2017 football season before hitting 30 stadiums in 2018 and 50 in 2019. During the COVID season in 2020, Barker still managed to see 42 games, and between the spring and fall seasons of 2021, he made 81 trips. Last season, he thought he’d reached his limit by making it to 90, but he says his Twitter followers pushed him to get to 100. A real estate appraiser, Barker says the funding has come mostly from his savings account, although Raynor notes he “has a partnership with TickPick that has helped him land obstructed-view tickets, which is also a beloved part of his brand as he visits various stadiums. He estimates he has spent only $300 on tickets all season thanks to some schools providing a media credential and also the generosity of his followers on social media.” To make it work financially, Barker adheres to three tenets: no parking, no airport food, no hotels. “If you go to 100 games, $150 a night hotel, let’s say, you save $15,000 if you don’t do a hotel. If you can withstand the glamour life, you get the reward.” Instead, he typically sleeps in his rental car in a truck stop parking lot. He also has a Planet Fitness membership, which, for $24 a month, allows him to exercise at any facility in the country. He can also take advantage of the free WiFi and showers. More from Raynor. The NFLPA is formally investigating its own role in how OneTeam – a joint licensing venture between several major athlete unions – is run, according to Front Office Sports’ Daniel Kaplan, who notes the review follows an NLRB charge from an MLBPA whistleblower alleging corruption in the baseball union’s dealings with OneTeam. NFLPA employees last month received unsigned “litigation hold” letters informing them to save documents related to prospective legal action. The letters read, in part: “[The NFLPA] recently learned through a public report that a whistleblower has filed charges with the National Labor Relations Board against NFLPA/PI’s JV (joint venture) partner, MLBPA and its leadership. The whistleblower made specific allegations regarding the conduct of the One Team Board.” The whistleblower charge contends that “MLBPA Exec. Dire. Tony Clark & others placed on MLBPA-owned for-profit (OTP) board, even though unqualified. (1) Self-Dealing/Conflict of Interest: Clark improperly gave himself & other executives equity In OTP. Inadequate disclosures involving OTP in MLBPA’s LM-2 (annual report). Abuse of Power and Conflict of Interest: MLBPA is cracking down on sports agencies it regulates. Yet MLBPA and Clark-owned OTP does this very thing, Tony and other MLBPA employees are personally profiting from the crackdown.” This news comes as the NFLPA “has offered buyouts to about half its 150 employees and leadership suggested that involuntary job cuts could be coming if enough workers don’t accept the offer,” according to SBJ’s Ben Fischer, who adds: “One cause leaders cited for the retrenchment was the arbitration ruling last August in which the union was ordered to pay Panini $7.8M for wrongfully terminating its contract.” NFLPA officials declined to talk specifics but released a statement indicating it “is continuing its efforts to ensure that the union is operating efficiently and with greater financial discipline to ensure it is best positioned to advocate for its members.” (link, link)

NCAA SVP of Administration/CFO Mario Morris joins Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz at the NCAA Convention to talk about the NCAA being debt-free, priorities for 2025, how the NCAA can support schools with revenue-sharing and more. For 2025, Morris explains there will be a focus on continuing to invest in championships. “A postseason championship is probably one of the most memorable experiences for a student-athlete. I participated in four bowl games, so every year I was at Alabama I participated in a postseason event and they are the most memorable experiences. We want to do more there. We’re trying to balance our priorities, but we want to invest in those championships more. We also have to be aware of the litigation that's going on right now, and that's something that can be influenced by policy and by other things, and [it’s] something we've got to pay attention to, so it's a financial priority for us. Revenue generation is also a priority for us. … We also have to be mindful of what the Division I governance structure looks like and the changes that come about there. Do those cause us to look at things differently financially? So there's a lot on our mind to keep up with.” Full conversation on Connect. (link)

Big West Commissioner/Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee Chair Dan Butterly sits down with Connect’s Bryan Fischer at the NCAA Convention to discuss what the committee’s talking about, the membership’s approach to scheduling, tournament expansion, conference realignment and NIL. Butterfly says the scheduling component was the biggest topic the committee discussed and explains: “MTEs have always been a very important part of college basketball. When you say Feast Week, people understand what Feast Week is. It’s the Thanksgiving time period when everybody is playing in an MTE. We're finding 97% or more of men's basketball teams are playing in some type of MTE, and how important those are for mid-major and small-major programs to get a neutral site opportunity, a tournament-type opportunity against a major program. Those are important parts of college basketball and trying to determine what the future is relative to MTEs, knowing that there's the Players Era events and some of these things that are coming out in the NIL space that we need to continue to look to protect the game of college basketball moving forward.” Butterfly also notes that Big West institutions are all focused on opting into the House settlement, adding: “We’re not necessarily in a position that we have the revenue to be able to outlay [massive revenue-sharing], but we do have a number of NIL opportunities along the California coastline and Hawaii right now.” Full conversation on Connect. The average price of tickets sold on StubHub for tonight’s College Football Playoff title game remained “steady at $2,500," as demand for seats has “exceeded the demand of all of the other CFP title matchups” dating back to 2019 per The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Mike Griffith. As of Saturday, nearly 700 tickets were still available on StubHub, with the lowest price for a single ticket being $1,865. Several lower bowl options were listed at prices from around $10K up to more than $14K. Meanwhile, Stubhub spokesperson Joseph Bocanegra says the game is on track to be “our best-selling CFP national championship game in StubHub history. It's actually already surpassed the final sales of every national championship game on StubHub." Vivid Seats reported the game is its "hottest college football ticket" since 2009, with an average price of $2,269 and the least expensive ticket at $1,452. (link); There are “thousands of people outside the stadium in bars, restaurants and hotels now refreshing their phones in hopes of landing a ticket,” according to Ticket Talk’s Scott Friedman, who notes the get-in price has skyrocketed from $2,078 at 8 AM to $4,559 at 3 PM. clict Founder Darren Rovell adds: “A few brokers sold short, selling tickets early and waiting to back fill. The seats are just not there, causing the huge spike.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown reports from the Athletes.org Players-Only Meeting over the weekend and notes that while the point of it wasn’t to parse the finer points of labor law or formulate a unionization strategy, “every athlete on stage disagreed with the recent proposal from the AFCA suggesting the transfer portal be limited to a single, 10-day window, laughing at the idea that ten days is enough time for athletes to make an educated decision, especially, as a few players point out, athletes sometimes are essentially forced into the portal by the coaches. Other issues on the agenda included athlete compensation (should athletes who make deep playoff runs earn more guaranteed revenue than those who only play the regular season? If coaches get bonuses for academic achievement, should players as well?), roster limits imposed by the House settlement (what happens to walk-ons?), health care, regulations around practice time and length, and more.” As the movement continues, Brown explains that “I want to try to give college students a measure of grace in how they decide to approach these organizational and informational efforts. I should not expect 20-year-olds to think or act like a 37-year-old with very different life and professional experiences should act. I have never had their job or participated in their workplace like they have. … Was Saturday the first step towards a massive labor movement? I have no idea. But I feel confident that nothing changes without the athletes having these tough conversations.” (link)

Nearly $6B in construction at new and renovated professional and college sports facilities is scheduled to finish in the U.S. and Canada in 2025, according to SBJ’s David Broughton, who notes that “in college stadium work, $2.4B is expected to be completed this year, nearly double the 2024 spend and a half-billion dollars higher than the previous record, set in 2023. But the record won’t last long, as spending in that niche is projected to top $3B in 2026. The category in 2025 is led by Kansas football’s $458M makeover of Booth Memorial Stadium (designed by HNTB and Multistudio, built by Turner) and Florida State’s $265M Doak Campbell Stadium renovation (designed by Populous, built by a Manhattan-Culpepper joint venture). College arenas top $1B for just the second time, thanks to a balanced mix of new competition and practice venues. The diverse roster is led by the $175M building on the campus of the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis, as the Tommies complete their jump from Division III to Division I, as well as a wrestling venue (Iowa State) and gymnastics sites (Minnesota and Iowa). Overall, at the college level, a record 58 stadiums and 27 arena projects are scheduled to conclude in 2025, up from 53 and 19, respectively, in 2024.” (link)

The Ringer Founder Bill Simmons is expected to sign a contract extension with parent company Spotify, according to Front Office Sports’ Ryan Glasspiegel, who notes there have been “murmurs in industry circles that Simmons could work out a collaboration for a return to ESPN in some capacity in the future. ESPN leadership, including Chairman Jimmy Pitaro and President of Content Burke Magnus, have been aggressive in maneuvering to work with big stars. According to a source with knowledge of ESPN, nothing is imminent, but the company would be open to working with Simmons again if there’s a compelling opportunity. An ESPN spokesperson declined to comment.” (link)

Inside Higher Ed’s Bob Moser catches up with multiple higher ed leaders who share their greatest hopes and fears for the second Trump administration, and Association of American Universities President Barbara Snyder explains: “President Trump has repeatedly said he wants to make America great and keep us ahead of China and other competitor nations. I am optimistic that he will support policies and investments that ensure the United States continues to be the world’s leader in scientific research. The president and Congress can secure that position by both increasing our public investments in cutting-edge research and by promoting policies that make it easy for the world’s best and brightest technological and scientific minds to study, work and stay here and advance U.S. innovation and economic growth. My single greatest fear would be that some might try to convince the president to pull back these investments in America’s greatness and close ourselves off from the global talent and knowledge that has helped make our country great. I hope that he and Congress will resist that shortsightedness.” American Council on Education President Ted Mitchell: “We’re encouraged by the emphasis the incoming Trump administration and the new Congress have placed on issues such as transparency and accountability related to student outcomes. This isn’t new, and it isn’t partisan, but meaningful change is long overdue. My biggest worry is that in attempting to pay for major spending cuts and pass tax legislation, the administration and Congress will do the shortsighted thing and enact policies like cuts to student financial aid and research funding.” Lots more from around the industry.
