The Ivy League will not opt into the revenue-sharing component of the House settlement, according to an email from Executive Director Robin Harris, who adds in a statement to the Daily Pennsylvanian: “The Ivy League remains committed to its foundational principles and longstanding rules that intentionally foster student participation in intercollegiate athletics as an important aspect of a holistic education. … Ivy League institutions will continue to offer an experience that resonates with student-athletes, and we firmly believe the League will continue to thrive competitively as one of the top five athletics conferences across all of Division I." Richmond will wait and see what the final details of the House settlement look like before determining how it will participate in revenue-sharing, according to Spiders AD John Hardt, and Men’s Basketball HC Chris Mooney notes: “There is discussion, and I feel like the A-10 is trying to guide schools into what they think will be an appropriate figure. We’ve had those discussions, but there’s not a final answer right now or an estimate.” The Richmond Times-Dispatch’s John O’Connor notes the variety among Atlantic 10 members will make establishing any sort of league-wide rule difficult. For one, some schools sponsor football while others don’t. “In terms of investments in men’s basketball, there is also dramatic variance. According to Department of Education figures…Dayton leads the A-10 with a men’s basketball budget of $9.4M, with Saint Louis ($8M), Fordham ($8M) and VCU ($7.2M) also occupying the upper tier. Rhode Island ($6.5 million) and Richmond ($6.2 million) are next. The Spiders, with that commitment and a program that typically averages approximately 6,000 for home games at the Robins Center, seem very likely to remain dedicated to the highest level of competition available, presumably the A-10. Would La Salle, with an annual men’s basketball budget of $3.6M, and Davidson, with a budget of $3.5M, or other schools be interested in staying in the A-10 if the league establishes a minimum investment for revenue sharing with the goal of securing its place in the competitive college basketball hierarchy?” (link)

Grambling State AD Trayvean Scott anticipates House-related expenses to reach “roughly $300K annually for the next ten years, totaling $3M over that timeframe.” As such, the Tigers have developed a “comprehensive new strategy and structure not just to navigate this new collegiate landscape, but to thrive in it. While we will be evaluating targeted reductions in operating expenses, we know that we cannot grow our program by cuts. Our focus must continue to be on revenue growth to maintain competitive relevance in this new era, while preserving our storied history of winning championships. … We are also actively revitalizing our ticket sales & annual fund plans, investing in major gift fundraising, and exploring additional premium amenities in and around the athletics footprint.” Scott goes on to ask fans to do four things: “Renew your season tickets, whether it’s for football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball or all four; renew your TiGer Club membership or consider upgrading your membership level; support forthcoming fundraising campaigns; and recruit new fans and members to the GramFam.” (link)

Rutgers finished FY24 with revenues of $136.8M and expenses of $178.3M. NJ Advance Media’s Keith Sargeant reports the Scarlet Knights received $45.6M from the Big Ten for its media rights and nearly $7.9M from the conference as its share from the league’s Football Bowl revenue fund. In addition, Rutgers received another $10.6M from the Big Ten and NCAA in non-media rights and non-football related distributions. “But sports expenditures included $38.7M in coaching salaries, $29.5M in support staff and administrator salaries, $25.9M in scholarship aid and $14M in athletics facilities debt service. The ledger shows a $41.5M shortfall, which when added to the $28.6M subsidized by the university, means the department’s deficit again topped $70M. … This year’s $70.1M deficit marks a 29.5% spike from last year’s non-COVID-year record $54.2M deficit.” Asst. VP for News & Media Relations Dory Devlin tells Sargeant: “As a member of the Big Ten, Rutgers is among the nation’s top public research universities in academics and intercollegiate athletics. Our competitive athletics programs continue to enhance Rutgers’ prominence, raise the university’s global profile, and build community among our current, future, and former students and their families. Our increased investments in Athletics reflect both the university’s commitment to remaining competitive in one of the best athletic conferences in America and the rising costs of travel, salaries, and benefits. Rutgers remains committed to, and will continue to expect, responsible investments in Scarlet Knights athletics.” (link)

Dallas' decision to withdraw as host the 2029 College Football Playoff championship game was not due to a “scheduling conflict,” according to the Dallas Morning News’ Lia Assimakopoulos, who reports that AT&T Stadium was never actually awarded the game and the committee withdrew its bid for other reasons last summer. Assimakopolous reports that “one of the primary reasons for withdrawing the bid was construction on the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, which began in June 2024 and is not expected to be completed until 2029. Those on the committee were concerned there would not be enough space available to accommodate the fan fest associated with the national championship game, which requires a 450,000 square-foot space. The Texas Legislature was also in the process of changing its events trust fund at the time of the bid review process, which could have impacted the funding allocated for a national championship in Dallas.” (link)

Boise State has launched the Built Different Campaign to engage Bronco Athletic Association members, season ticket holders, and businesses in the Treasure Valley and across the state of Idaho to support Boise State student-athletes and programs. As part of the effort, Boise State is preparing to share revenue with its athletes in 2025 as the pending House Settlement creates a transformational shift in the future of college athletics. The campaign, led by Football HC Spencer Danielson and the BAA team, is a fundraising initiative to reach out to local businesses and community partners, in addition to current season ticket holders and BAA members interested in driving competitive excellence at a national level in a sustainable way at Boise State. Broncos AD Jeramiah Dickey: "The Built Different Campaign is a direct result of so many supporters asking, 'How can we help?' We are grateful for those who have reached out inquiring how we can best retain our athletes as we head into the era of revenue-sharing. This campaign is a priority for us and shows we can and will do things differently at Boise State. We are capable of EPIC here, and it will take all of Bronco Nation and the state of Idaho to make sure we sustain our success on the national stage." (link)

Rose Bowl Stadium is serving as a base camp for nearly 4,000 first responders battling the Eaton Fire. Sportico’s Jacob Feldman notes that one locker room has become a command center while another serves as a briefing room. “Outside, converted trailers serve as sleeping quarters, a laundromat, or a medical facility. Two kitchens serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Mail is delivered and sent out. A support center employs six dogs to help comfort firefighters and National Guard service members.” Rose Bowl CEO Jens Weiden explains: “We’re in the events business; we’re not in the stadium business. Right now we’re putting on—maybe not the most iconic—but probably one of the most important events we’ve ever put on, which is hosting these folks so they can go out there and do their job and stop this fire. … Minutes into the fire, they knew it was going to be a large-scale fight, so within minutes I got a call from the deputy fire chief and he said, ‘We need your space.’ And I said, ‘We’re ready.’” Feldman points out that several events slated for the stadium have already been canceled or postponed, but the venue “hopes to return to its original purpose as soon as it can reasonably do so.” (link)

Sonoma State (DII) will shut down its athletics department as part of sweeping budget cuts aimed at addressing a $23.9M budget deficit. Interim President Emily Cutrer attributes the shortfall to rising personnel costs and inflation but particularly a steep decline in enrollment, which has fallen by 38% since 2015. The university reported its enrollment as 5,073 in October, with a peak of about 9,408 students a decade ago. Cutrer also notes that “further steps must be taken to fully close the budget gap and ensure Sonoma State’s financial and operational capacity to best serve its current and future students and adapt to a changing higher education landscape.” (link)

The SEC and Big Ten are scheduled to hold a second joint meeting of their ADs next month, where “conference leaders are expected to deeply explore the future of the College Football Playoff format,” according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who reports the meeting is set for February 19 in New Orleans. He adds: “Many expect the Big Ten – and perhaps the SEC too this time – will again propose a format that assigns multiple automatic qualifiers to single conferences. There is discussion of a 14-team model that designates four automatic qualifiers each to the SEC and Big Ten; two each to the ACC and Big 12; one to the best Group of Five champion; and one at-large, intended for Notre Dame if it finishes ranked inside the top 14 (or, if not, the next-highest ranked team after the automatic qualifiers are selected). Officials describe it as a 4-4-2-2-1+1 model, with the top two seeds receiving a first-round bye.” Also from Dellenger: “Discussions are expected to go beyond the regular season [scheduling partnerships previously discussed] with the possibility of what officials describe as an ‘overhauled postseason’ for those programs not advancing to the CFP. Administrators are exploring ways to arrange more matchups that pair teams from the two leagues as opposed to their current bowl agreement pairings. The bowl agreements expire after the 2025 season. All of it is an effort to generate untapped revenue at a time when schools are bracing to spend more than $20M annually in an athlete revenue-sharing concept tied to the House antitrust settlement.” (link)

Colorado football student-athlete Camden Dempsey has filed a letter with U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken in the House case “on behalf of 90+ Big 12 athletes, calling for a grandfather clause to protect Walk-Ons from being cut due to the proposed roster limits. Walk-Ons are the heart of college sports. These limits threaten our ability to compete and contribute and eliminate our NIL rights. This case will reshape college athletics, and it’s time Walk-Ons had a voice in the conversation. We deserve to be heard.” From the letter: “Walk-ons are integral to college athletics, embodying dedication, perseverance, and the true spirit of sport. The proposed roster restrictions will unfairly eliminate opportunities for these athletes, many of whom compete without scholarships or guarantees, simply for the love of their sport. We respectfully request the inclusion of a grandfathering provision to allow current walk-ons to complete their collegiate careers without counting against roster limits. This solution is fair, feasible, and would protect thousands of student-athletes from losing their place on the teams they’ve worked so hard to join.” (link, link)

USC AD Jen Cohen writes in the latest edition of The State of Troy that “as we invest the full permissible $20.5M in 2025-26, we must prioritize more strategically and operate more efficiently than ever before. Maximizing our investment in USC Football – whose success generates the revenue that supports broad-based excellence in all our sports – is critical. So, too, is ensuring all 23 programs have the resources needed to compete for titles and to help student-athletes reach their fullest potential in all that they do. We must also be fiscally responsible with our investments, and this new and increasing annual expense will challenge our department to do business differently. We will need to raise more money, engage more fans, and generate more exposure and NIL brand opportunities, all while reducing expenses more diligently and operating more nimbly as the landscape shifts.” Cohen also offers a facilities update: “Construction on the Bloom Football Performance Center is well underway, Rawlinson Stadium remains on schedule for a summer opening, and this week, we began laying sod on Dedeaux Field, where the Trojans will return to practice this spring.” (link)

Oklahoma State finished FY24 with revenue of $123.2M and expenses of $122M, putting OSU roughly $1.2M in the black. The total revenue growth was just shy of $13M more than what the department brought in during FY23. Cowboys AD Chad Weiberg tells The Oklahoman’s Scott Wright OSU plans to offer the maximum revenue-share with student-athletes: “We believe that’s what it’s going to take to remain competitive. We believe that if we’re not maxing it, then we’re probably falling behind competitively, because we know there are other schools that are planning to max it. We have started, and will continue the process of what is it that we should be allocating differently? We clearly have to generate more revenue. Everything is on the table or needs to be on the table. We need to be thinking about that in ways differently than we have previously.” (link)

Nebraska in FY24 set records for both revenue ($220.16M) and expenses ($213.45M), finishing with a budget surplus of $6.7M, which is 52% below FY23. The Omaha World-Herald’s Sam McKewon reports the NU football program had an $84M operating budget in FY24, which is $11.3M more than FY23. Of the $76.3M in contributions received from donors, $43.7M went to general funds, $30.5M was contributed specifically for football and the small remainder went to other sports. Football accounted for $128.1M in revenue, a surplus of $44M, and 71.9% of the school’s ticket revenue, 83.9% of NU’s $64M in media rights deals and 66.1% of its concessions sales. The Huskers also crossed the $3M threshold in recruiting expenses, with football spending the lion’s share at $2.18M, a 28% increase YoY. (link)

Paycom Founder/CEO Chad Richison is launching the National Duals Invitational, a college wrestling event that will be held Nov. 15-16 at Tulsa’s BOK Center and include a total purse of more than $1M. National Wrestling Coaches Association Executive Director Mike Moyer calls the new event transformational. “Due to the unprecedented challenges in NCAA Division I athletics today, it is more imperative than ever to have more big moments in intercollegiate wrestling so we can substantially grow our fan base and viewership.” According to The Oklahoman’s Jenni Carlson, “half of the squads in the 16-team event will earn payouts with the winning team taking home $200K. Second and third will earn $150K, fourth $75K while fifth through eighth earns between $50K and $20K. Each team will receive $20,000 just for participating.” Oklahoma State AD Chad Weiberg: “Bringing a prestigious wrestling tournament of this magnitude to Oklahoma is exciting for the sport, and the winnings will be significant in helping universities build out their programs at an even higher level. We continue to be grateful for Mr. Richison and Paycom’s support of wrestling in the state of Oklahoma and nationally.” (link)

The United States Hockey League’s Youngstown Phantoms have retained Winston & Strawn Co-Executive Chairman Jeffrey Kessler as the club attempts to leave the USHL for the Ontario Hockey League. Sportico’s Michael McCann and Scott Soshnick: “Central to potential antitrust litigation brought by the Phantoms is the NCAA opening the door to former [Canadian Hockey League] CHL players” who were previously precluded from NCAA eligibility for receiving stipends that, in the eyes of the NCAA made them professional athletes. “The Phantoms could argue the USHL (and USA Hockey) denying USHL players compensation violates antitrust law. In the face of an antitrust lawsuit, the NCAA eliminated restrictions on former CHL players. The USHL and its competing teams can no longer argue that no-pay rules are necessary to preserve NCAA eligibility. Kessler might assert that if the NCAA is okay with junior hockey players being paid, the USHL should feel the same. … The Phantoms might also assert the USHL and USA Hockey have conspired to deny Phantoms players, coaches, fan and media partners a better place in the junior hockey market. Also, if the USHL uses what the Phantoms portray as one-sided and non-negotiable deals to acquire market positioning, a potential antitrust claim could be strengthened.” More from McCann and Soshnick. JohnWallStreet takes a closer look at how organizations are successfully converting single-game ticket buyers into mini-plan holders, and Eventellect Co-Founder Patrick Ryan explains: “Anytime a game gets hot, or ticket prices get high, smart teams are reaching out to fans buying seats at a markup on secondary and telling them that they could have saved money if they had a mini plan. … There are many teams who sell fewer full season tickets than they did in the past but have seen no loss of revenue because they sell more mini plans.” JWS notes that “converting single-game buyers into partial season ticket holders requires a level of data scrubbing and customer intelligence, and oftentimes some additional sales and/or marketing support. However, that investment is increasingly becoming necessary with the cost of attendance continuing to rise. Going to every game simply isn’t in the cards anymore for most fans and having a partial plan enables supporters to attend a good number at a fair price—and it allows the team to keep its guaranteed revenues climbing. … In most pro cities single game seats can still be had at a family-friendly price. Fans may just need to be more flexible with when they go, where they sit, and who they see the home team play. And again, that’s by design. At least, amongst organizations that understand the most in-demand games can be used to get ‘big spenders’ to open up their wallets a bit wider.” (link)

Catapult has selected automated football data management provider ANSRS as a preferred partner, integrating its AI tools into the Thunder Cloud video platform used by more than 90% of NCAA DI programs. SBJ’s Joe Lemire: “It is said to be the first time that coaches will have simultaneous access to all the necessary video and data typically required for building scouting reports and game plans. … ANSRS had 110 customers this past football season, most notably the NFL’s Washington Commanders, as well as about 30 college programs – Penn State, Florida State, Texas Tech, Nebraska, Iowa State and Kansas State – and numerous high school teams. FCS teams will also have access to ANSRS Adjust, an in-game feature to access and analyze live sideline video.” (link)

Netflix added 18.9M customers in Q4, more than doubling Wall Street’s expectations and bringing the streamer’s total number of global subscribers to more than 300M. The company’s previous best was 15M in Q1 of 2020 – “numbers driven by the onset of the coronavirus pandemic,” per Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw, who notes this is the “final time Netflix will report quarterly subscriber numbers. The company’s stock has historically risen and fallen based on customer additions, but management is trying to get investors to prioritize financial metrics like sales and profit. The company reported revenue grew 16% to $10.2B for the quarter, the biggest gain since late 2021, and said sales will grow faster than predicted in 2025.” For the year, Netflix projects revenue of up to $44.5B, a gain of 14% from the year just ended, with an operating margin of 29%. (link); The growth was aided by major sports programming in Q4, including NFL games on Christmas Day, however co-CEO Ted Sarandos had this to say about a more robust sports offering on the platform: “Full season economics are very hard to make work.” (link)

Adidas recorded an operating profit of $59M in Q4, pushing its full-year operating profit to $1.35B, higher than it forecast in October. Currency-neutral revenue reached $6.25B for the quarter, higher than the $5.52B average of analyst estimates. From Bloomberg’s Tim Loh: “Demand for classic sneaker models, including the Samba, Spezial and Campus, has helped Adidas win back favor with retail store partners. In recent years, they had pushed newer labels including On Holding AG and Deckers Outdoor Corp.’s Hoka, while Adidas and Nike built out their own e-commerce channels.” (link)
