Sonoma State will discontinue athletics, in addition to cutting around two dozen academic programs and not renewing 46 faculty members next academic year, as the university faces a $23.9M budget deficit in 2025-26. Interim President Emily Cutrer attributes the shortfall to rising personnel costs and inflation but particularly a steep decline in enrollment, which has fallen by 38% since 2015. The university reported its enrollment as 5,073 in October, with a peak of about 9,408 students a decade ago. Cutrer also notes that “further steps must be taken to fully close the budget gap and ensure Sonoma State’s financial and operational capacity to best serve its current and future students and adapt to a changing higher education landscape.” (link)

Newman AD Joanna Pryor will step down after five and a half years leading the Jets to pursue a new career venture. President Kathleen Jagger: “Joanna deserves credit for her efforts in leading Newman University through the process of earning full membership in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). She has well served and represented Newman and the MIAA, as the conference's only female athletic director over the past five years.” Asst. More from NCAA VP of Division II/Liaison to the Board of Governors Terri Steeb Gronau’s Small College Conversation with D2.ticker's Anthony Grassi at the 2025 NCAA Convention, as one area the membership believes may need more attention is NIL: “It's so new in Division II, and I say new in that it doesn't get the same sort of headlines that you see in Division I and so I think Division II student-athletes are still figuring out, schools are still figuring it out. We do a lot of education sessions, not only here but NACDA has done a lot for its members to help individuals really understand what that means in Division II.” On funding priorities and championships: “I 100% believe we are going to continue to fund our championships at the level we're funding them now, if not more, because we have heard that that's an important part of the Division II experience. But, if not more, what is that more and what ultimately is that allocation going to be will be an important topic of conversation over the next year.” Asked about her leadership approach as the VP of DII: “In Division II, it's definitely a lead-serve model where there are things that I think our membership expects me to do, to be tracking on, not only from a Division II standpoint but from an association-wide and other two divisions standpoint. At the end of the day, our membership are the ones that need to be making the decisions. They need to be helping to set the direction. We're just providing them the tools and resources to be able to do that and the most important thing is that we are communicating and understanding that the communication or information that a student-athlete needs is going to be different than a president or chancellor and it's our job and role to figure out what do they need in order to understand and then ultimately make a decision that they're going to to be able to make. I always tell people my role is to try and see what life looks like two years from now, build stuff back for you so that you're able to understand what's coming and then give them the right tools and resources to be able to make the decisions.” Lots more on BOSCA. + Saint Augustine’s is asking the North Carolina Attorney General to expedite the approval of the university’s $70M deal with 50 Plus 1 Sports ahead of the deadline to respond to the SACSCOC on January 25. The deal also includes a 65/35 revenue split for 50 Plus 1 and SAU for the first decade of the deal and a 60/40 split after that through year 99 of the deal. More. (link, link)

Strong jobs data means the Federal Reserve is likely to continue a pause on rate cuts, according to Bloomberg’s Augusta Saraiva and Ye Xie. Saraiva points out that “nonfarm payrolls increased 256K in December, the most since March,” per a Bureau of Labor Statistics report. Moreover, the report included annual revisions to the unemployment rate. “Notably, the peak rate in July — which was initially reported as 4.3% and helped lay the groundwork for a full percentage point of rate cuts by the Fed later in the year — was revised lower, suggesting the labor market was somewhat more resilient over the summer than previously thought.” UBS Global Wealth Management Senior U.S. Economist Brian Rose: “Given the overall strength of the recent economic data, there is little reason for the Fed to consider cutting rates anytime soon.” Meanwhile, Xie points out that Bank of America economists also believe the “cutting cycle is over” and expect the conversation to move to rate hikes in the event inflation creeps back over 3%.
