More from NCAA VP of Division III Louise McCleary’s Small College Conversation with D3.ticker's Anthony Grassi at the 2025 NCAA Convention on the division spending down its reserve to the mandated threshold: “I think there's still an appetite, but there's always an asterisk because as we started this it's an uncertain world and so our mandated reserve was never set up to say this will sustain us for years and years. Really, it will sustain us for six to 12 months, if there's a revenue loss. Unfortunately we have a very recent example of that with the pandemic and so that we will always keep. […] Depending on what the next six to 12 months tells us around college athletics and higher education, our President's Council, Strategic Planning and Finance [Committee] may say should we rethink this. Last year, we did a review by Deloitte. They came in and they looked at really at a high level all of our finances and they said find ways to support your membership. Keep your mandated reserve, but you don't want to necessarily build up that surplus. Instead do some of the things that I mentioned that our government structure has approved and we've been able to give back to our membership.” McCleary believes the $15M threshold is “in a good place” due to lessons learned from the pandemic and allows the division to support the membership. On NPI and bracketing principles: “I think at first glance, we did the NPI, that works. We're doing this bracketing flexibility, that's working. There's transparency. It's easing the work of our volunteer committee members, so I think there's lots of pluses so far. […] From what I have heard from our membership, from what I've heard from the Championships Committee, that bracketing flexibility, that NPI has been a success, knowing that it will always be evaluated and adjustments will be made if needed.” Full conversation on BOSCA. Bates Interim AD Will Rothermel chats with the Bates Bobcast about stepping into the interim role. “I feel like athletics is very well supported at this time. I think there's a lot of interest and energy behind athletics, so it's as big of a role as it seems to step into this quickly. […] I think I just doubled down on the partnership that I've felt from campus. I think there is great support from folks all across campus in various pockets and I think there's just a lot of energy to want to see the Bobcats succeed and do well because they know that a rising tide lifts all boats. Tufts Football student-athlete Vaughn Seelicke has started a Change.org petition calling for the NESCAC to allow teams to participate in the DIII Football Playoffs, citing equity in competition, enhancing brand and reputation of institutions and no additional financial cost. (link)

The MAC will start sponsoring Women’s Wrestling in 2025-26 as the sport is set to become the 91st NCAA Championship sport. MAC Executive Director Megan Morrison: “Incorporating women's wrestling into the vibrant tapestry of MAC sponsored sports is a pivotal step in supporting gender equity across the conference while simultaneously supporting a growing NCAA emerging sport for women.” (link)

Kean will add Men’s and Women’s Wrestling, growing its athletics portfolio to 23 varsity sports. The Cougars have hired Bergen (NJCAA) Men’s Wrestling HC Christopher DiSanto as the first HC for both programs. (link)

Albright is looking to pull up to $25M from its $65M endowment as a “self-funded line of credit” should the college need access to funds, according to court documents from an emergency petition filed last month. The institution is seeking this arrangement, which would come as a 20-year loan on funds withdrawn at a five percent interest rate, over a bank loan because it was quoted rates as high as 25% due to existing debt. Spokesperson Justin Roy: “We do not believe that we will have to draw on the endowment this semester as we are currently running breakeven on our budget. We are optimistic about the future of Albright and have made many financial decisions in the last six months to set the college up for success.” More. (link)

Sonoma State (DII) will shut down its athletics department as part of sweeping budget cuts aimed at addressing a $23.9M budget deficit. Interim President Emily Cutrer attributes the shortfall to rising personnel costs and inflation but particularly a steep decline in enrollment, which has fallen by 38% since 2015. The university reported its enrollment as 5,073 in October, with a peak of about 9,408 students a decade ago. Cutrer also notes that “further steps must be taken to fully close the budget gap and ensure Sonoma State’s financial and operational capacity to best serve its current and future students and adapt to a changing higher education landscape.” (link)

The American Association of Colleges and Universities, in partnership with the American Association of University Professors and NORC at the University of Chicago, conducted a national survey of higher ed faculty to understand their perspectives on and experiences with academic freedom. More than one-third of all faculty say they have less academic freedom today when it comes to teaching content without any interference (35%), speaking freely as citizens (36%), and speaking freely when participating in institutional governance (38%). Those who joined the faculty in 2017 or earlier are significantly more likely than those who joined in 2018 or later to say they have less academic freedom today when it comes to teaching content without interference (44% vs. 27%), speaking freely as citizens (44% vs. 23%), and speaking freely when participating in institutional governance (47% vs. 27%). Additionally, half of all respondents (50%) said that colleagues at their institutions are more careful today to avoid controversial topics when revising curricula. Significant percentages said colleagues in their academic program or department are less willing to express controversial views in their courses (39%), on social media (38%), and at professional conferences (30%). When gathering with colleagues at informal campus events or social gatherings, 61% of faculty have observed a tendency to avoid controversial topics. Full report. (link)
