WCC Commissioner Stu Jackson released the following statement concerning potential changes to the NCAA governance structure: “Assessing the numerous changes in college athletics and their effects, it appears the [Autonomy 4] conferences are seizing more decision-making power. It’s vital for the basketball-focused leaders, and a broader group of stakes-holding decision makers across college sports to build engaged and properly weighted representation as we look forward for basketball and Olympic sports in the wake of these discussions. The future of college athletics and the opportunities for the larger pool of student-athletes requires a diverse collaboration of representation focused on the greater good. Opportunities should not be commandeered by a few to dilute the fairest benefit to all.” (link)

Sacramento State will opt into revenue sharing as allowed by the House settlement, according to President Luke Wood, who explains: “We can award more financial aid to student athletes and have more flexibility on how scholarships are awarded to meet their needs. We would have the ability to bring NIL in-house. Student athletes deserve revenue sharing and we are a believer in NIL. We see it as a recruiting advantage and having less exposure for the university.” In response to an X user who predicts Sac State will be in a middle subdivision, Wood responds: “No middle for us. FBS or bust. The best of the best or bust. That’s what our student-athletes deserve.” (link, link)

Hawaii Interim AD Lois Manin met with members of the state’s Senate Higher Education Committee who grilled her about the state of the athletics department. Lawmakers expressed concern that waiting until summer to fill the permanent AD role may be too long with so many major issues facing the department including budget decisions, fundraising, and facilities. Committee Chair Senator Donna Mercado Kim remarked during the meeting: “We had an athletic director that was just newly hired going on two years and then that one gets fired by the person that hired him [former UH president David Lassner] just before the budget. That’s very troubling and it doesn’t necessarily bode well for athletics and our support of athletics.” Senator Kurt Fevella, meanwhile, registered concern over the decision-making process that led to Football HC Timmy Chang’s extension. “How can you get transparency never giving the new president one option to collaborate with you guys to gain your guys trust and working with you guys?” Manin explained Chang only had a year remaining on his previous deal and wanted to get the extension in place before the opening of the NCAA transfer portal. “I will say that collaboration is something we always try to do, but the timing of the football coach was very difficult because the transfer portal opened.” (link)

The 2027 College Football Playoff championship game will be held at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. CFP Executive Director Rich Clark: “College football fans across the country are going to be thrilled to hear this news today. Las Vegas has shown the world they have amazing venues and boundless energy to host an event like the College Football Playoff National Championship in spectacular fashion. I can’t think of a better stage to crown the best team in college football in 2027.” (link)

Mississippi State received 40 major gift commitments in December, and Bulldogs AD Zac Selmon notes: “For context, Mississippi State Athletics usually averages around 60 major gifts per year. … In just this six-month period alone, we are on track to more than double the number of seven-figure gifts that have ever been received by Mississippi State Athletics in a single year.” Looking to the future, Selmon notes that “we must continue to be strategic and precise in how we approach facility enhancements,” but points to several ongoing efforts and projects recently announced as cause for optimism. In addition to enhancements at Davis Wade Stadium announced earlier this week, Selmon cites the indoor practice field at Leo Seal Jr. Football Complex as part of the 10-plus-year master plan developed in collaboration with HOK Group. “This training facility will allow our players and coaches to train effectively for the highest level of competition. Mississippi State football is the only SEC program without an indoor practice facility. In today's climate, if we want to recruit, develop, compete and win in the toughest conference in the country, our players and program need the necessary infrastructure.” (link)

New Mexico State Acting AD Amber Burdge talks about her appointment to the role and says President Valerio Ferme “really expressed how he had confidence...that I can step into this role. He explained that he very intentionally placed acting over interim (in her title) because he wanted me to act as the athletic director, and told me that in six months' time, we would review and determine if the acting tag would come off or if they needed to do a search and put someone in this position." Burdge wants to track more data to gauge what generates fan engagement as it relates to social media impressions, articles on NMSU's website and student attendance at games, specifically which class shows up the most. She also wants to see how NMSU's APR scores and average GPAs for each team compare to Conference USA and New Mexico schools, and average 4,000 yearly community service hours across all sports. To get Aggie Athletic Club donations up to $1M for the year, Burdge plans to increase AAC advertising and would like to see an uptick in AAC women's membership by 10%. “I want to know when we advertise the AAC in the (Pan American Center), do I have the right people sitting in the seats watching that advertisement? … Who else can we get in front of? I am hopeful that me being in this seat opens some different doors that might not have been previously opened." (link)

The latest budget breakdown at UCLA from the Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch: “In a departure from previous years, when it provided negligible direct institutional support, the school gave its athletic department $30.06 million during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024. But the Bruins’ yearly deficit of $51.85 million reflected their ongoing challenges in balancing their budget amid a rapidly changing college sports landscape.” FY24 operational revenues increased by $14M to $119.04M with operating expenses up by $29M to $178M. Categorically, MMR revenue was down $6M YoY with the switch from Learfield to JMI Sports, ticket sales were down $3.78M & donations dipped by $1.66M. (link)

Cincinnati’s FY24 revenue increased by 11% YoY to $96.7M thanks largely to the $18M conference distribution from the Big 12. The Bearcats received $6.75M the prior year from the AAC. UC’s expenses increased by 15% to $105.3M as the Bearcats finished FY24 $8.6M in the red. Direct institutional support for UC rose by $2M to $37.5M. Some of that money goes to debt on athletics facilities while the rest finances scholarships, departmental operations and other expenses. (link)

+ South Carolina rewards Football HC Shane Beamer with a new contract running through the 2030 season. Beamer’s new pact will pay the fifth-year skipper $8.15M annually with $100K annual raises through the remainder of the term, making him the ninth-highest paid coach in the SEC. If Beamer were to depart in the first year, the buyout would be $5M and drop by $1M each subsequent year. (link)

Ohio State wide receivers Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate have $4.5M+ and $1M+ offers, respectively, to enter the transfer portal, according to On3’s Pete Nakos. Total Player Value (TPV) subsequently notes that “with football roster spending projected to increase by at least 50% for the 2025 season, top spending programs will spend an average of +$350K per player ($30M/85 players).” TPV Founder Jeff Cravens adds: “For the 70 P4 schools, the average roster spend for 2024 was approximately $8.5M; Given current dynamics and trending, that number will be around $13M for the 2025 season.” (link, link); While Smith seemed to indicate he has no desire to leave Columbus, Buckeyes HC Ryan Day told the Dan Patrick Show’s namesake on Friday that “I think one of the big issues that we have across the board in college football right now is enforcement. You know some of the stories of some of the things that have gone on just within the last couple of years or even in the past, but enforcement is really strained right now. And so until we start enforcing some of these rules, people can just call someone's agents or someone's parents and offer them a certain amount of money, and then it goes from there. And that's just part of it. I mean, there's so many other things that come in place. So that's one of the things to me that I think we have got to get addressed in college sports and college football is enforcement, because right now there's virtually none. And it's gotten worse as time has gone on.” (link)

Cleveland State will discontinue Wrestling, Women’s Golf and Softball at the conclusion of their respective seasons this academic year as part of a strategic effort, which began in 2023, to address budgetary shortfalls across campus. The Board of Trustees approved the measure at yesterday’s meeting and also approved relocating the university’s Esports program from athletics to the Washkewicz College of Engineering. Vikings AD Kelsie Gory Harkey: “It is a tough day for Cleveland State Athletics. The student-athletes and coaches in the impacted programs have been an important part of the Cleveland State community, and the decision today is not a reflection of the commitment or passion they, our staff or our alumni have to our program.” (link)

New Marquette AD Mike Broeker was officially introduced yesterday in Milwaukee: “It's never been about ascending to a role. For me it's about being in a position of making impact at a place you believe in. And there's no place that I believe in more strongly than the Marquette University athletic department. With everything that's going on, I remain hopeful. I believe these places are the places that thrive. Because we're grounded in more than just winning some games.” On how he plans to help navigate the ever-changing NIL world: “I think it's more about being strong in your convictions, being committed to the things that are important to you, and more than ever having a real understanding of who you are and what you're capable of doing. The path is going to change, because it's changing so fast. But your ability to be grounded in the right things, and have the right people leading the programs, like we do in (MU men's basketball coach) Shaka (Smart), like we do in (women's basketball coach) Cara (Consuegra), that stuff is critical. I think that those are the things that give us the great advantage in navigating it.” (link)

Western Carolina AD Alex Gary joins Southern Conference Assoc. Commissioner for Brand Strategy and Broadcast Dave Friedman to discuss his experience on the Women’s Basketball Committee and notes the committee has emphasized with many leagues the importance of playing strong non-conference schedules. “Even though we’re looking at just overall record and conference and non-conference [scheduling] isn't as important, many of the leagues do need to go out of conference to get some of those Quad 1 and Quad 2 wins. As an example – and we're talking about teams that are likely to be in the field – but just yesterday I was watching the Coretta Scott King Classic and you saw out-of-conference UCLA playing Baylor, Maryland playing Texas. It’s always good to see those top teams go against each other even after they've gotten in the conference play. And while many of those teams are likely to be in the tournament field, it's good to see them go against each other when it comes to seeding.” To differentiate between the “best” teams and the “most deserving” teams, Gary explains that’s where the importance of watching games comes in. “Every month we send a list of the games that as a committee member we’ve watched because we want to hold each other accountable for evaluating with their eyes, not just simply looking at numbers. It’s hard to determine based solely on numbers who's a better team. You have to watch the games. So, if your charge is to find the best teams, you may have a team that's 30-4, you may have a team that's 18-16. You have to watch those teams and try to trust your eyes along with the data to help support what teams you're talking about.” Full Q&A. (link)

The final fall Learfield Directors’ Cup Standings have been released with North Carolina, Stanford, Penn State, BYU, Virginia, Notre Dame, Oregon, Ohio State, Washington and Texas filling in the top-10. The ACC placed 10 teams in the top-25, while the Big Ten had 7, SEC had 4, Big 12 had 2, and the Big East and Ivy League each had one team. “New this year, an additional countable sport has been added on the Division I side, bringing the total number of countable sports to five (5). On the women's side, soccer joins basketball and volleyball, while the men's side will continue to be baseball and basketball. Overall, 19 total sports are counted for the final standings in June, including the five countable sports, and the next highest 14 (max.) sports scored for each institution, regardless of gender.” (link, link)

Auburn AD John Cohen talks more about a multi-purpose facility upgrade coming to Jordan-Hare Stadium’s north end zone: “Everything's still on the table. There are budgeting matters that have to be dealt with. You have to create pro formas that allow you to compare what this is going to cost to how much revenue is going to be brought in. It's a process. I like where we are with the north end zone project. I think it is coming along. We devote a lot of attention to that, because it's important to the future not only of our football program, but it's important to the future of our athletic department. It's a potential revenue stream.” On the new 47-by-154-foot video board currently being installed at the same end of the stadium: “I'm not an expert on jumbotrons, but I do know this: When we go on the road, there are some that in terms of pixels, might be bigger, but there's not as clear a picture. I'm being told that the pixels, the clarity, all of those components are of the highest level.” (link)

Maryland boss Damon Evans offers an opinion on scheduling challenges within the new Big Ten hoops structure, which has been a point of contention for Terps Men’s Basketball HC Kevin Willard & his peers: “I don't believe in excuses. You have a schedule. We all know what the schedule is. And flying from the West Coast to the East Coast, we've had sports that have been doing that for years. This is not the first time that these things have happened. I'm not going to say that there's some things that you don't have to adjust to and adapt to. You're flying out there on a charter plane, four-to-five hours, you land, you get yourself together. So you make the necessary adjustments. Making up excuses, we all knew what we were getting into when we expanded this conference, and so I'm just not an excuse guy. [...] I hear all the stuff about how hard it is to win on the road. I get that, but you got to win on the road. We all play on the road. Every team in this conference plays the same number of road games, and so at the end of the day, we have got to win on the road. And I think once we get over the hump, then that builds some confidence and will give us momentum.” (link)

Clemson was approved for its first permanent alcohol sales license in August, and can sell alcohol seven days a week at all its major sports facilities. First on the list is a beer garden on the third-base line of Baseball’s Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Tigers’ HC Erik Bakich: “We're going to be selling beer this year, which is huge. We want the rowdy crowd, we want the beer-drinking crowd, we want people to come out here and have a blast. The opposing pitchers are going to get warm right in front of that section. I'm excited to see how that looks.” (link)

Former Vermont Administrative Assistant to the AD, Sophia Boyages, says that the school is using her logo design without compensation, a logo that she designed independent of any involvement from the school or athletic department, according to her May 2024 complaint filed with the Vermont District Court. Boyages is arguing that the University was not entitled to her design, as her contract did not include an intellectual property clause, though she designed it in hopes of a promotion or compensation. She is seeking monetary relief for the alleged infringement. UVM registered a color version of the logo on Sept. 17, 2024, with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Boyages registered her design, referred to as “SophCat” in the lawsuit, with the United States Copyright Office on Dec. 15, 2023. Vermont spent $145,650 on a new primary logo and brand positioning in 2024. The lawsuit is ongoing. (link)

While Xfinity’s X1 TV box isn’t necessary to access the bundle, using one gives access to features like multiview, “enhanced” 4K and Odds Zone, which displays odds from DraftKings and FanDuel. The package is also available on the Xfinity Stream app on mobile and smart TV platforms like Apple TV and Roku. (link)

Bank of America lead media analyst Jessica Reif Ehrlich with SBJ’s Austin Karp and Mollie Cahillane on the coming ESPN Flagship option: “It's interesting. Look, none of us have seen it, but the way Disney talks about what it will be, it will be ESPN on steroids. There'll be some personalization and sports betting and all kinds of other add-ons for a sports fanatic. How many sports fanatics are there? I am not sure that we know the answer to that. Twenty-five percent of the audience maybe is really, or 20-25% is the number. We've always heard of diehard sports fans who'll pay extreme prices. But I like Disney's hybrid approach. They're not taking ESPN off of pay TV, out of the bundle. So you're not forcing people to go into ESPN Flagship, and ESPN will be in a lot of these bundles, too. So it's unclear. There's no way you could say without having seen it, knowing the exact price, and knowing what all these other bundles will be, how successful will they be. We’ll consider it a success if they can get a meaningful number, millions, of incremental subs, cord-cutters, or cord-nevers that are not in the bundle.” (link)
