The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner suggests the pending lawsuit between the Mountain West & the Pac-12 could dictate the next moves in conference realignment. In a nutshell, here’s why: “In theory, the Pac-12 needs to offer membership to the eighth football-playing school this spring, so it can give notice-of-departure to its conference before July 1 and avoid an increase in fees. (In many instances, exit fees jump if notice is given within a year of departure.) But because the hearing on the motion to dismiss the lawsuit is March 25, the legal process might not play out before UNLV hits the 12-month deadline to offer for notice-of-departure. Settlements take time. Then again, it’s entirely possible that the Pac-12 focuses on Texas State and perhaps the trio of AAC schools (Memphis, USF, Tulane) this spring. Or that UNLV is willing to wait, and the membership decision plays out after July 1.” Lots more nuance, because as Wilner notes, “there are always complicating factors with realignment.” (link)

Speaking of realignment, the Deseret News’ Joe Coles points to Utah’s move to the Big 12 as one reason its FY24 budget results ended with a $17M+ deficit. Conference distributions were down by nearly $7M YoY & more broadly the Utes say 70% of the overall deficit can be connected back to the league switch (legal fees, travel costs also noted). However, “Key revenue performance indicators such as ticket sales, number of donors, and total donations (not all reflected in this report) improved year-over-year,” plus Utah covered the deficit with “carry forward” department reserves. NJ Advance Media’s Adam Zagoria chats with Vitaminwater/Body Armor Founder Mike Repole, who says about his support for St. John’s: “It’s either evolve or die.” St. John’s had been “stuck in 1990 for a while” in terms of its approach to college athletics, but that changed when the school hired Men’s Basketball HC Rick Pitino, according to Repole, who provides more than 50% of the Red Storms’ NIL money and adds: “It’s starting to feel different [at St. John’s]. You know, for new fans, it’s like, ‘oh my God, I’ve never felt this before.’ And for fans like me of 40 years, it’s like, this is what it used to feel like, and it’s special.” The Johnnies’ success this season “just says that when you hire an amazing coach, legendary icon, and [unite him with] St John’s and their incredible history of basketball and the university and New York City and Madison Square Garden, this is what you get,” Repole continues. “And it’s only the beginning right now and it’s a feeling I haven’t had in 25 years. I mean, it’s electric. I moved out of New York five, six years ago. And [Wednesday], it felt nostalgic.” Regarding the future of college sports in general, Repole remarks: “The era of hiring the administrator with a double Masters in education as your AD doesn’t work anymore. You now need to bring in people that have business sense, people that have worked for Fortune 500 companies. You need to bring in people that are entrepreneurs. You need to work with different people you’ve never worked with before. … It’s either evolve or die.” (link)

Vanderbilt officially dedicated its new Huber Center yesterday, the brand-new basketball facility made possible by the lead gift from George and Cathy Huber. This is the first non-renovation project completed as part of the Vandy United campaign, which began in 2021. The facility houses the men’s practice court and offices on the first floor and the women’s on the third. The second level of the building has a weight room, athletic training center and other shared amenities. Photos inside. (link)

More on Mississippi State’s facilities push, which was heavily publicized yesterday, includes more identified upgrades for Baseball’s Dudy Noble Field. Though there’s no exact timeline, the list of enhancements includes new premium suites down each baseline, a second loft added in left field, general seating areas on the berms & added outfield spaces. There are also additional needs for a year-round restaurant that could be a revenue opportunity, creating a new visitor’s clubhouse, new coaches offices & more. (link)

Former UCF Defensive Coordinator Ted Roof has filed a lawsuit against the university on the grounds of breach of contract connected to the buyout terms he claims were reduced when the Knights moved on from former Head Coach Gus Malzahn. As you may recall, Roof was terminated without cause 33 days before Malzahn’s exit & Roof contends he should be owed an additional $50K based on pro-rated pay, not a lesser amount that was outlined in his deal should Malzahn no longer be employed. From the Orlando Sentinel’s Matt Murschel: “The lawsuit states that the provision is meaningless because it only applies if the school still employed Roof at Malzahn’s resignation.” (link)

New North Carolina Football HC Bill Belichick on the NIL landscape during The Pat McAfee Show yesterday: “It’s pretty similar to what we have in the NFL. As I said, it’s a little bit of a combination between the day when a couple of players after the draft, the undrafted players are negotiating to be on a roster, and free agency, just in general, where, those couple of days — it’s called the legal tampering period, I think they call it, when you’re talking to agents, trying to work out deals with them, before the players are actually allowed to visit, and you’re allowed to talk to them. It’s not the same, but it’s sort of a combination of those two NFL events. So, it is what it is. There’s a lot of money, promises and opportunity being discussed, and everybody is in on it. The players, the teams that have the players, the teams that are looking for the players, and following the guidelines of the process, which are not as well-defined as they were in the NFL, but that’s what it is.” (link)

+ Notre Dame GM Chad Bowden is headed to USC for the same role. (link); With that hire, Trojans current GM Dave Emerick will slide into a Chief of Staff role with the program. (link) CBS’ Matt Zenitz: “The money numbers for college football general managers and personnel staffers continue to go up, and rightfully so. There are now at least five college football GMs making at least $700,000 per year (and likely more soon) and also a few now making seven figures.” (link)

Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter reports that Connecticut is the latest state with a bill to allow schools to “directly (or via a 3rd party) pay athletes and prohibits the NCAA from taking any action for doing so. It uses the term ‘revenue sharing agreement,’ which does not limit payments by a school to NIL compensation.” From the bill: “An institution of higher education, or an entity acting on behalf of such institution, may create, facilitate, negotiate, support, assist with, engage with or otherwise enable opportunities for a student athlete or a prospective student athlete to earn compensation for use of such student athlete’s name, image or likeness or any other compensation related to such student athlete’s participation in an intercollegiate athletic program. No institution of higher education shall use state funds appropriated to such institution for compensation of a student athlete pursuant to an endorsement contract or a revenue sharing agreement.” (link)

After its regular season ratings dropped by 2%, the NFL’s wildcard weekend experienced ratings that fell 9% from last year while the divisional round ratings decreased by 7%. Puck’s John Ourand notes there are a few factors potentially at play here, including the presidential election, during which the NFL’s numbers are traditionally softer, as well as a shortage of blue-chip teams like the Cowboys or 49ers and a lack of big-market teams. “Inside the league office, many recognize that the Jets’ and Giants’ disastrous seasons played a role in the ratings dip. And then there was the inaugural 12-team [College Football Playoff], which competed with the NFL a couple of times. The divisional playoff round was also scheduled on a holiday weekend just before a presidential inauguration.” However, considering the wild card games and divisional round games averaged 28.3M and 37.1M viewers, respectively, league officials aren’t overly concerned, with one telling Ourand: “What this league has been doing, relative to the rest of the business, is off the charts. So let’s not overreact. But if we do start to see some longer-term trends over the next few years, there are some factors that should get a second look.” Ourand goes on to point out that while streaming services are willing to pony up big money for exclusive rights to certain games, “neither Netflix nor Amazon (and certainly not Peacock) will be able to compete with traditional broadcast networks on total viewership. As the league continues to put more games on OTT services, its viewership numbers will feel the impact.” (link)

The American Association of Colleges and Universities and Elon’s Imagining the Digital Future Center conducted a survey of 330 college presidents, provosts and other senior leaders to gather their thoughts on the impact AI is having on teaching and learning, and just 43% said their institution was ready to effectively use generative AI to prepare students for the future. The same percentage responded positively when asked if they were preparing faculty for teaching and mentoring with generative AI. When asked about challenges to adopting AI in courses, 93% cited faculty unfamiliarity with generative AI, and 84% cited lack of training and support. Regarding AI’s impact on campus, 45% thought it would be more positive than negative, 27% thought it would be equally positive and negative, 17 percent thought it would be negative and 10% said they didn’t know. Imagining the Digital Future Center Director Lee Rainie: “This is really an inflection point. What we see in these data is there are people who are gung-ho to move forward, and there are people who are terrified, who don’t know how to move forward or don’t want to move forward. That makes it sort of hard to figure out, as a broad class of institutions, where the future lies.” (link)

WCC Commissioner Stu Jackson released the following statement concerning potential changes to the NCAA governance structure: “Assessing the numerous changes in college athletics and their effects, it appears the [Autonomy 4] conferences are seizing more decision-making power. It’s vital for the basketball-focused leaders, and a broader group of stakes-holding decision makers across college sports to build engaged and properly weighted representation as we look forward for basketball and Olympic sports in the wake of these discussions. The future of college athletics and the opportunities for the larger pool of student-athletes requires a diverse collaboration of representation focused on the greater good. Opportunities should not be commandeered by a few to dilute the fairest benefit to all.” (link)

Sacramento State will opt into revenue sharing as allowed by the House settlement, according to President Luke Wood, who explains: “We can award more financial aid to student athletes and have more flexibility on how scholarships are awarded to meet their needs. We would have the ability to bring NIL in-house. Student athletes deserve revenue sharing and we are a believer in NIL. We see it as a recruiting advantage and having less exposure for the university.” In response to an X user who predicts Sac State will be in a middle subdivision, Wood responds: “No middle for us. FBS or bust. The best of the best or bust. That’s what our student-athletes deserve.” (link, link)

Hawaii Interim AD Lois Manin met with members of the state’s Senate Higher Education Committee who grilled her about the state of the athletics department. Lawmakers expressed concern that waiting until summer to fill the permanent AD role may be too long with so many major issues facing the department including budget decisions, fundraising, and facilities. Committee Chair Senator Donna Mercado Kim remarked during the meeting: “We had an athletic director that was just newly hired going on two years and then that one gets fired by the person that hired him [former UH president David Lassner] just before the budget. That’s very troubling and it doesn’t necessarily bode well for athletics and our support of athletics.” Senator Kurt Fevella, meanwhile, registered concern over the decision-making process that led to Football HC Timmy Chang’s extension. “How can you get transparency never giving the new president one option to collaborate with you guys to gain your guys trust and working with you guys?” Manin explained Chang only had a year remaining on his previous deal and wanted to get the extension in place before the opening of the NCAA transfer portal. “I will say that collaboration is something we always try to do, but the timing of the football coach was very difficult because the transfer portal opened.” (link)

The 2027 College Football Playoff championship game will be held at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. CFP Executive Director Rich Clark: “College football fans across the country are going to be thrilled to hear this news today. Las Vegas has shown the world they have amazing venues and boundless energy to host an event like the College Football Playoff National Championship in spectacular fashion. I can’t think of a better stage to crown the best team in college football in 2027.” (link)

Mississippi State received 40 major gift commitments in December, and Bulldogs AD Zac Selmon notes: “For context, Mississippi State Athletics usually averages around 60 major gifts per year. … In just this six-month period alone, we are on track to more than double the number of seven-figure gifts that have ever been received by Mississippi State Athletics in a single year.” Looking to the future, Selmon notes that “we must continue to be strategic and precise in how we approach facility enhancements,” but points to several ongoing efforts and projects recently announced as cause for optimism. In addition to enhancements at Davis Wade Stadium announced earlier this week, Selmon cites the indoor practice field at Leo Seal Jr. Football Complex as part of the 10-plus-year master plan developed in collaboration with HOK Group. “This training facility will allow our players and coaches to train effectively for the highest level of competition. Mississippi State football is the only SEC program without an indoor practice facility. In today's climate, if we want to recruit, develop, compete and win in the toughest conference in the country, our players and program need the necessary infrastructure.” (link)

New Mexico State Acting AD Amber Burdge talks about her appointment to the role and says President Valerio Ferme “really expressed how he had confidence...that I can step into this role. He explained that he very intentionally placed acting over interim (in her title) because he wanted me to act as the athletic director, and told me that in six months' time, we would review and determine if the acting tag would come off or if they needed to do a search and put someone in this position." Burdge wants to track more data to gauge what generates fan engagement as it relates to social media impressions, articles on NMSU's website and student attendance at games, specifically which class shows up the most. She also wants to see how NMSU's APR scores and average GPAs for each team compare to Conference USA and New Mexico schools, and average 4,000 yearly community service hours across all sports. To get Aggie Athletic Club donations up to $1M for the year, Burdge plans to increase AAC advertising and would like to see an uptick in AAC women's membership by 10%. “I want to know when we advertise the AAC in the (Pan American Center), do I have the right people sitting in the seats watching that advertisement? … Who else can we get in front of? I am hopeful that me being in this seat opens some different doors that might not have been previously opened." (link)

The latest budget breakdown at UCLA from the Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch: “In a departure from previous years, when it provided negligible direct institutional support, the school gave its athletic department $30.06 million during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024. But the Bruins’ yearly deficit of $51.85 million reflected their ongoing challenges in balancing their budget amid a rapidly changing college sports landscape.” FY24 operational revenues increased by $14M to $119.04M with operating expenses up by $29M to $178M. Categorically, MMR revenue was down $6M YoY with the switch from Learfield to JMI Sports, ticket sales were down $3.78M & donations dipped by $1.66M. (link)

Cincinnati’s FY24 revenue increased by 11% YoY to $96.7M thanks largely to the $18M conference distribution from the Big 12. The Bearcats received $6.75M the prior year from the AAC. UC’s expenses increased by 15% to $105.3M as the Bearcats finished FY24 $8.6M in the red. Direct institutional support for UC rose by $2M to $37.5M. Some of that money goes to debt on athletics facilities while the rest finances scholarships, departmental operations and other expenses. (link)

+ South Carolina rewards Football HC Shane Beamer with a new contract running through the 2030 season. Beamer’s new pact will pay the fifth-year skipper $8.15M annually with $100K annual raises through the remainder of the term, making him the ninth-highest paid coach in the SEC. If Beamer were to depart in the first year, the buyout would be $5M and drop by $1M each subsequent year. (link)

Ohio State wide receivers Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate have $4.5M+ and $1M+ offers, respectively, to enter the transfer portal, according to On3’s Pete Nakos. Total Player Value (TPV) subsequently notes that “with football roster spending projected to increase by at least 50% for the 2025 season, top spending programs will spend an average of +$350K per player ($30M/85 players).” TPV Founder Jeff Cravens adds: “For the 70 P4 schools, the average roster spend for 2024 was approximately $8.5M; Given current dynamics and trending, that number will be around $13M for the 2025 season.” (link, link); While Smith seemed to indicate he has no desire to leave Columbus, Buckeyes HC Ryan Day told the Dan Patrick Show’s namesake on Friday that “I think one of the big issues that we have across the board in college football right now is enforcement. You know some of the stories of some of the things that have gone on just within the last couple of years or even in the past, but enforcement is really strained right now. And so until we start enforcing some of these rules, people can just call someone's agents or someone's parents and offer them a certain amount of money, and then it goes from there. And that's just part of it. I mean, there's so many other things that come in place. So that's one of the things to me that I think we have got to get addressed in college sports and college football is enforcement, because right now there's virtually none. And it's gotten worse as time has gone on.” (link)
