USC Upstate AD Feig announces his resignation and will stay on until his successor is selected. Feig writing, in part: "But, as my children grow and their lives become busier and busier, I have been unable to achieve the work life balance I sought. I increasingly find myself missing out on more and more activities and events in my children's lives at critical times in their development. That realization, along with significant burnout over the past few years, has led me to this decision to turn down the opportunity to stay and instead continue my professional journey in a different direction. I hope to have 40+ years and many opportunities to be a great employee and worker during my life, but I only have one opportunity to be a great dad to my three boys and I'm bound and determined not to let it pass me by." Illinois State Interim President Tarhule announces that ISU has canceled plans for a student athletics fee increase and vowed the school would more closely oversee athletics fundraising in light of the events which led to Redbirds AD Brennan’s resignation. Tarhule also says he has accelerated a “full financial audit” of the athletic department. “Either the audit will assure me and all of us that what we witnessed was a one-off, and I can look all of our constituents in the eye and tell them so…or it will identify if there are other instances where maybe the judgment and decision-making didn’t quite rise to the level we’re used to at Illinois State.” (link)

The College Football Playoff Management Committee has determined preliminary dates for the expanded CFP in 2024, “voting to hold first-round games that conflict with the NFL and semifinals on midweek nights,” according to Sports Illustrated’s Dellenger. Specifically, three games will be held on Saturday, December 21, the same weekend the NFL begins playing Saturday games. Dellenger also reports three of the four quarterfinals are slated for New Year’s Day with one quarterfinal scheduled on New Year’s Eve (a Tuesday night) or January 2. None of those dates conflict with NFL games. (link)

More from The Athletic’s Auerbach and Vannini on the CFP meetings, as they report ACC Commissioner Phillips continues to advocate for moving the regular season start date to Week 0. “I don’t think anybody’s ready to say we can’t do it or we can do it. Navigating the fluidity of this thing is challenging. … These things are running in parallel tracks in my view, with television and dates and some of those things, along with what does that look like with the (schedule) compression that we all know is going to take place with these added games?” Also, CFP Executive Director Hancock says the group is looking for consistent atmospheres for early-round games even though they will be at home sites for the higher seeds. “It’ll be a home game with pageantry, but there will also be visiting-team pageantry, similar to what happens in bowl games. We do not want to take away the pageantry that happens like normal.” (link)

James Madison AD Bourne points out that while JMU has received no formal response from the NCAA regarding its request for relief from the two-year FBS reclassification period, “We believe that JMU's transition to FBS is unlike any previous institution in the last 25 years and warranted consideration based on the investment and strategic decisions we made prior to our official transition and in light of what our student-athletes have been through with COVID, the withholding of championship opportunities by our previous conference and the current national landscape of prioritizing the student-athlete. While we are incredibly disappointed, I want to stress that we knew the NCAA reclassification bylaws when we decided to move to FBS. We knew what we signed up for and at no point were disillusioned to think otherwise. With that in mind, I ask our supporters in JMU Nation not to respond with a negative outpouring against the NCAA or anyone involved in this review process.” (link); FAQ on the process and more on JMU’s position. (link); The waiver request has been officially denied, per The Athletic’s Vannini and Auerbach. (link)

Nebraska's Volleyball Day event in August, during which the Huskers will face off against Omaha in a volleyball match inside Memorial Stadium, has sold out. Approximately 82,900 tickets were claimed between the season-ticket holder on-sale on Tuesday and the general public sale on Wednesday and Thursday. NU reports 17,900 of the tickets were claimed in the season-ticket holder on-sale. Huskers AD Alberts: “We knew the interest in this match would be extremely high, but to sell out Memorial Stadium is truly remarkable. I've heard lots of talk about breaking the NCAA volleyball attendance record, but given the incredible demand for this event we want to explore every avenue to see if it's possible to challenge the record for the most attended women's sporting event in this country.” (link)

Meanwhile, Boise State is drawing record crowds to softball games at Dona Larsen Park, but BSU is faced with a challenge when it comes to increasing the amount of matchups the team can host. Broncos AD Dickey: “One of the biggest challenges here is the weather. A lot of times our team has to go south and play a lot of games outside of Boise. That’s something I think is a challenge.” Last season, the softball team played just 12 of its 40 games at home and are scheduled to play 14 this year. Softball HC Shults notes the more the team enjoys success, the more fans it will draw, which in turn will hopefully lead to more upgrades. “We need lights, that’s the biggest thing, in order to host the conference tournament — (which) the previous year’s winner gets to host if they meet that qualification. And then the turf on the field, that’s gonna create more home games as well. When we get the snow and the rain, most days are warm enough to play softball, it’s just our field doesn’t handle it great.” Dickey adds: “I see a tremendous opportunity. I wanna say softball is one of the fastest-growing sports. I think we can really utilize that passion.” (link)

Oklahoma Governor Stitt has vetoed the state’s NIL bill, which easily passed both legislative chambers and was written with consultation from athletic departments from Oklahoma and other universities in the state. Stitt, who vetoed 23 other bills, explains: “I cannot, in good faith, allow another year to go by without cutting taxes and reforming education, both of which we can absolutely afford with our $1.2B surplus and over $6B in savings. Therefore, until the people of Oklahoma have a tax cut, until every teacher in the state gets the pay raise they deserve until parents get a tax credit to send their child to the school of their choice, I am vetoing this unrelated policy and will continue to veto any and all legislation authored by Senators who have not stood with the people of Oklahoma and supported this plan.” (link)
